Today, we’re doing something truly special. We’re going to dive into one of the most beautiful, emotional, and unforgettable stories in all of English literature: “The Happy Prince,” written by Oscar Wilde. This story has been loved for more than a hundred years, not only because it’s beautifully written, but because it touches something deep in the human heart — compassion, sacrifice, loneliness, generosity, and the very real distance between beauty and suffering in our world. Before we start, just a quick note: The version you’re about to hear is a slightly shortened version of the original story —short enough to fit a podcast episode, but long enough to keep every emotional beat, every important scene, and every piece of Wilde’s poetic style. If you’re in a quiet place, feel free to close your eyes and let the story play like a movie in your mind.Alright — let’s begin. 本期的知识卡片我们整理在下面啦:gilded — covered with a thin layer of gold— 镀金的;表面包着一层薄金的sapphire — a blue precious stone— 蓝宝石ruby — a deep red precious stone— 红宝石seamstress — a woman who sews for a living— 以缝纫为生的女裁缝embroider — to sew decorative patterns— 刺绣;绣花feverish — having a fever— 发烧的;因发烧而虚弱不适的misery — great suffering— 极大的痛苦;悲惨的处境shabby — worn-out and untidy— 破旧的;寒酸的;显得潦倒的furnace — a very hot oven used for melting metal— 熔炉;高温炼炉courtiers — people who serve in a royal court— 宫廷侍臣;王室随从sacrifice — giving up something valuable for others— 牺牲;为他人放弃重要的东西compassion — deep sympathy and caring for someone’s suffering— 同情心;对他人痛苦的深切关怀plucked — pulled out— 拔下;摘下;扯下来gutter — the edge of the street where water flows— 路边排水沟;街道边的水槽dust-heap — a pile of rubbish— 垃圾堆;废弃物堆praise — to express admiration or love— 赞美;称颂;表达敬爱 扫描下方二维码,关注公众号【纵横Say Hi】,获取节目文字版知识卡片 / 全英文故事双语文稿,加入听友群,随时互动哦~
Hi everyone. Welcome back to the podcast. I'm David… Man.. it feels like I haven't said that intro for a very, very long time!First of all — super belated Happy New Year. I know it's already a bit late to say that, but honestly… the past couple of months were kind of a blur for me.If you've been listening for a while, you probably guessed it already — yes, it was MBA application season.Deadlines, essays, revisions, last-minute changes, time zones… the whole thing. Now that most of that is finally done, and other than a few family travel plans coming up, I'm pretty much back. That also means the podcast is coming back with me.Not all at once, not overnight — but I'll slowly ramp things up and get back to a more regular rhythm, similar to what we had before.
I’ve been working nonstop all week. I need to blow off some steam.Gaming helps me blow off steam after work.② Get it out of your system I needed to get it out of my system. He traveled for a year to get the wanderlust out of his system. 和 blow off steam 的区别steam:会反复产生 → 定期放system:清掉一次 → 心智腾空③ Vent / Get it off your chest 关键词:健康的倾诉与吐槽vent = 通风孔 / 排泄口吐槽 ≠ 负能量而是系统正常运行的一部分常见搭配vent to someonevent about something例句Can I vent for a minute?I feel much better now that I’ve vented. He went on a ten-minute rant. I need to unwind after work.I need time to decompress. ⑥ 压力临界信号(️ 很重要)I’m about to lose it.I’m about to snap.
Do Westerners even work at the end of the year? Let's pick this up after the holidays."
You take the blue pill — the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe." You take the red pill — you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes." I took the red pill about social media." I took the red pill about elite education and meritocracy." Reading that book red-pilled me about the food industry." She gave me the red pill about our team culture." Reading 'The Second Sex' was my red pill moment about feminism." I got red-pilled about the mental load women carry in relationships." She's been red-pilled about beauty standards and body image." After I quit my stable job, I realized comfort isn't the only path to happiness — that was my red pill moment." Taking the red pill about my anxiety was hard, but getting help changed my life." Therapy red-pilled me about how my childhood shaped my relationships." I took the red pill and realized I'd been avoiding dealing with my grief for years." Getting red-pilled about my people-pleasing was painful but necessary." She took the red pill about her codependent relationship and finally left." Are you ready to take the red pill?"你准备好面对真相了吗?"She chose the blue pill and stayed in her comfort zone." Taking the red pill about our product." Getting red-pilled about my one-sided love was painful — I realized they never felt the same way." She took the red pill and accepted that the relationship had been over for months." Don't red-pill me on coffee, I need my illusions." The red pill is that cats actually rule the world." He thinks he's red-pilled, but he's just conspiracy-pilled." This is your red pill or blue pill moment my friend." Blue pill or red pill, what'll it be, sis/bro?"蓝药丸还是红药丸,你选哪个,兄弟/姐妹?"Hey Samantha don't take the red pill." (别去面对真相,会不舒服)"Fine, take the blue pill." Sugar - Maroon 5Animals - Maroon 5Payphone - Maroon 5One More Night - Maroon 5Don't Wanna Know - Maroon 5Moves Like Jagger - Maroon 5,Christina AguileraMemories - Maroon 5
Let me ask you something.Have you ever noticed that foreigners — or people working in Western companies — seem to slowly disappear at the end of the year?Starting from late November, emails become shorter, meetings get postponed, projects suddenly get “pushed to January,” and no one really looks like they’re giving one hundred percent anymore. And if you’ve ever worked in a multinational company, you probably know exactly what I’m talking about. It almost feels like… from Thanksgiving all the way to New Year’s, the Western world is mentally half on vacation. Now here’s the funny part. For me personally, the end of the year is actually the most terrifying season of all. As an MBA admissions consultant, this is peak chaos. Most major MBA application deadlines are packed into December and early to mid-January. Right now, I’m completely in the trenches — essays, deadlines, interviews, last-minute edits.Honestly, it’s a bit of a battlefield. And yes — that’s also why the Say Hi podcast has been updating a tad more slowly as of late. But here’s the irony. While people like me are drowning, for most people — especially Westerners — this is actually the happiest, warmest, and most anticipated time of the year. They call it the holiday season. So today, I want to explain what this holiday season really is — not just the holidays themselves, but the cultural rhythm, the emotional flow, and why it changes how people think, work, and live.
本期的知识卡片我们整理在下面啦: 两种更成熟的 Body 写法包含: Counterargument(反对意见 + 反驳) Qualification(限缩观点 / 限定范围)为什么重要? Counterargument(反对意见 + 反驳)目的: 表现你考虑过他人的反对观点,让你的论证更有力量。四步结构:提出反对观点:Some people argue that…承认合理之处:This concern is understandable… 回到主张:This shows that… Qualification(观点限缩 / 限定范围)目的: 主动指出例外,让你的观点更精确、更真实。 承认例外:However, there are exceptions… My argument mainly applies to…
像 kung fu、feng shui、yin and yang、dim sum、tofu… ️ 英文里的中文足迹(From Chinese → English)食物类(Food Borrowings:使用率最高)tofu(豆腐)dim sum(点心)chow mein(炒面,粤语音译)wonton(馄饨)congee(粥)bao / baozi(包子)mala(麻辣)规律:吃的无法翻,只有借。
In our Thanksgiving episode last week, we talked about how being thankful is a decision, not a feeling. And today, I want to continue that idea — but bring it into a relationship that shapes so much of who we are: Marriage.I want to share a book that helped my wife Liz and me more than we ever expected:The Meaning of Marriage by the late Timothy Keller. This book came into our lives at exactly the moment we needed it.And it didn’t just help our marriage — it completely reframed the way we understand love itself.
Introduction – Body – Conclusion。 提出观点(Opinion/Thesis)你的立场是什么?

If you listened to Monday’s Thanksgiving episode, you probably remember that we talked about the history of Thanksgiving, how Americans celebrate it, and of course, the Thanksgiving dinner traditions. One of the most meaningful parts of Thanksgiving dinner isn’t actually the turkey, the stuffing, or even the pumpkin pie (although I’ll admit… they’re all super delicious) — The most meaningful part of Thanksgiving is the moment before everyone starts eating, when you go around the table and each person shares what they’re thankful for this year. It’s simple, but very powerful. It forces you to pause… and look back.So today, I want to do the same thing here — I want to share with you what I’m thankful for this year. Vocabulary List — “Thankfulness & Reflection” Special1. be thankful for… Example:I'm truly thankful for my family's support this year. Example:Whenever I feel frustrated, my wife reminds me to count my blessings. 3. take something for granted中文: 视为理所当然Example:Living in Australia made me realize how many things I used to take for granted. Usage Note:可以用在 relationships、health、time 等情境。 Example:Looking back, I can see how everything slowly fell into place this year. Example:My daughters adapted to their new school surprisingly well. Usage Note:后面通常接 a new life, a new environment, changes, a new routine。 Example:My wife always keeps me grounded when things get overwhelming. 7. provision中文: 供应、预备(常用于宗教语境)Example:I'm thankful for God's provision throughout this challenging year. 8. support system中文: 支持系统(指家人、朋友、同事等)Example:Having a strong support system makes life's challenges easier. 9. not take something lightly中文: 不把…… Example:I don't take your support lightly — it means a lot to me. Example:This move to Australia opened so many new doors for me and my family. 11. grateful中文: 感激的(比 thankful 更深沉一点)Example:I'm grateful for every listener who has supported this podcast. Example:The end of the year is always a good time for reflection. Usage Note:可搭配 personal reflection, deep reflection, year-end reflection。13. look back on… Example:When I look back on this year, I realize how much we've grown. Example:Every challenge we overcame this year made our family stronger. Usage Note:可搭配 big challenges, unexpected challenges, personal challenges。15. appreciate the little things中文: 珍惜小事、小确幸Example:Living in Australia helped me appreciate the little things in life. Usage Note:常出现在 gratitude、mindfulness、well-being 的语境。「the man upstairs」是什么意思? Heaven → up thereGod → the man who lives up there所以就变成了:“the man upstairs”它不见得是宗教人士才用,反而蛮多 secular 的、讲话比较轻松的美国人也会用。

Today, I want to share something a little more personal — what it’s really like living in three completely different worlds: the U.S., Asia, and now Australia.I’ve spent almost 30 years in Asia, about 7 or 8 years in the U.S., and the past year here in Sydney. And after moving between these three continents, one thing I’ve realized is this: there’s no perfect place.Every country gives you something — and takes something away. And honestly, different places fit different versions of who you are.
Vocabulary Review① Daylight saving time kicks in意思:夏令时间开始了例句:Daylight saving time kicks in this Sunday. ② Set your clock forward/back意思:把时钟往前/往后调例句:Don't forget to set your clock back an hour. ③ Lose an hour of sleep意思:少睡一小时例句:We lose an hour of sleep when daylight saving starts. We gain an extra hour when it ends. The time zone difference between Sydney and LA changes after daylight saving. English ReadingDaylight saving time was created with good intentions — to make better use of daylight and save energy. Benjamin Franklin once joked that people should wake up earlier to save candles, not knowing that his humor would inspire a global practice. Over the centuries, this idea spread from wartime necessity to peacetime routine. But as the world became connected 24/7, the benefits faded while the confusion grew. Today, daylight saving feels more like a relic of the past — one that doesn't quite fit in the digital age. Yet, it reminds us of an important truth: time itself is constant, but how we organize it reflects who we are as a society. In a world of different time zones, calendars, and schedules, maybe what we really need isn't to change time — but to find better ways to use it.
