Tonight we learn so much more about the dead dread spectre, Peter Quint. The governess also has an encounter with a new spectre - Miss Jessel - while playing with little Flora at the pond. She has the startling revelation that both Miles and Flora, despite their attempts to feign ignorance, actually perfectly remember their dealings with the late rascal Peter Quint and the deceased Miss Jessel. (She had been hoping they had magically had their memories of them wiped or something?) and now realizes that the two children are trying to protect her from the ghostly beings as she thinks she is protecting them! Mrs. Grouse is FINALLY more forth-coming with information. Sheesh. Took long enough! Could have saved the governess a lot of heartache and suffering! Got too much on your mind? Need a familiar story to just breathe to? Well I'm not sure this is the fairy tale for that, but hey, we're reading it together! Join me for tonight's Sleeping Beauty's Origin Story of sorts - we travel back to Giambattista Basile's tale of "Sun, Moon, and Talia" which is creepy in it's old creepy old man king way. Of course. Why would we expect anything else? Ah well. There is also two little fairy babies (which I'm pretty sure where ah... something else in the original) and a jealous queen who makes her husband and sun eat these children (kinda) after cooking them into so many dishes. A whole lot happens, and while it's not a traditional "Happily Ever After" (or maybe it is because this is a traditional tale?) it's interesting for sure! NOT a Disney Princess Aurora Sleeping Beauty happily ever after. This tale, Giambattista Basile's "Sun, Moon, and Talia" is read in a soft voice and set to some light and soft background music. Follow along with me as I read this classic ghost story - I'm sure we'll have more than a few shared scares!Tonight, we begin Henry James' chilling "The Turn of the Screw" with the Introduction, Chapter 1 and Chapter 2. We get the whole creepy origin and set-up to infamous Bly, and more than a few hints to it's mystery are already peppered in! We get a frightful amount of set up - Douglass has gathered a curious group around the fire in an old house to tell the story of Bly out of a red gilt manuscript. We (through the beautiful handwriting of the governess) meet Mrs. Grouse and little Flora, and get a grand little tour of the big house… which feels like a ship adrift at sea it seems. We also learn that young Miles has been kicked out of school, and that the previous governess has died. Mysteriously. And that’s about as much as Mrs. Grouse will let on! How about something on the lighter side? Something to counteract the gloom and doom and nightmares? Let's get cozy for tonight's tale "The Three Spinners," which has been collected by a great many people, including the Brothers Grimm, and this version specifically by Katherine Pyle. Somehow, everything works out just perfectly in this fairy tale, and everyone truly does have a Happily Ever After?! How rare! Can you withstand the wrath and icy breath of King Frost? I probably couldn't, and I'm extremely glad to be reading this chilly frosty tale from a blanket fort of my own! BUT it is in line with the snowy wintery weather that is creeping up, so grab some hot cocoa and join me for tonight's fairy tale: "The Story of King Frost!" Come for the story, stay for the prophetic talking barking doggie!Once upon a time there was a wicked stepmother, who loved her own daughter so much, but cared little for her husband's daughter. Ah yes, how well we know this tale! BUT this one has a wintery twist! I was getting "Snow Queen" and "Frozen" vibes very very strongly through this reading. Anyway, we follow a young kind girls who gets dumped off in the forest to freeze (by her father! On her stepmother's wish!) and is instead... not frozen, but rewarded due to her polite and humble nature. You know where this is going. The stepmother wants the same reward for her own daughter, and well... let's just read the rest together, shall we? This Russian fairytale, "The Story of King Frost," (or "The Story of the Frost King" is read in a soft voice (with some light chatter and commentary - I am human and not a robot) and set to some light and soft background music. I do hope you enjoy the this evening's wintery fairytale!"Decline, Relent" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/This tale is from a compendium of fairy tales collected by Andrew Lang, which is now in public domain. You've heard the fairy tale Snow White? This is not it, but it sure is an enchanted story! Join me for tonight's adventure into a fairytale collected by the Brothers Grimm - "Snow White and Rose Red!" We follow two inseparable sisters as the get courted by a bear, save a dwarf three times, and are nearly eaten by their beloved! Kinda. Also, they tend to sleep too close for my comfort by cliff edges. They know no fear! This tale, the Brothers Grimms' "Snow White and Rose Red," is read in a soft voice (with some chatter as I'm human and not an ai robot) and set to some light and soft background music. Some would do anything for love… others wouldn’t do that. This twisted old tale pushes the limits of love, and there are quite a lot of poetic tears to shed along the way! This story, "The Nightingale and the Rose" is from a collection of Oscar Wilde's fairy tales, which is now in public domain. To much buzzing in your skull to sleep?! Let's get Grimm! Join me for tonight for a familiar tale - "The Ash Maiden" a form of "Cinderella!" This one is, of course, a bit more Grim... which is unsurprising as it's collected by the Brothers Grimm! Two evil stepsisters, an evil stepmother, a wishing tree with a bird that produces the finest of dresses, 3 nights of a royal ball, exclusive dances with the (really dense?) prince, a lost shoe, escape plans, and so much more! We have quite an action-packed adventure in store this evening! This tale, the Brothers Grimms' "The Ash Maiden," is read in a soft voice and set to some light and soft background music. PIGS HAVE INVADED THE KINGDOM. What now?! Can't sleep? Same here! Maybe we'll find it in tonight's epic adventure among the sun, moon, and even the house of the wind. We journey with one woman on as she muddles through a dragon's deceit, and makes the journey of a lifetime to fix what trust had been broken by... not communicating. We meet celestial beings (and their mothers) and even construct a rather grim ladder in order to make the world right again. This tale, "The Enchanted Pig," from the Red Fairy Book, is read in a soft voice and set to some light and soft background music. Have you ever been so anxiety-ridden that you can't sleep? HEY WELCOME TO THE PARTY! That's exactly what starts off tonight's fairytale read, "The Nix of the Mill Pond" from the Brothers Grimm! After that, we get a very sad story of love lost, which, honestly, made me want to cry as I retold it. But fear not! This fairy tale is actually a hopeful one, in the long long end. As always, do be careful what you wish for and bargain away when dealing with a water nix (water sprite!) This tale, the Brothers Grimms' "The Nix of the Mill Pond," is read in a soft voice and set to some light and soft background music. There's nothing like a picturesque ghost story, is there? What's that? Join me for tonight's tale and find out! Let us float over lush landscapes and escape into gnarly orchards... that are haunted? Gasp! This is an easier, but still mysterious, ghost story set in a sleepy New English countryside. This tale, "The Haunted Orchard" by Richard Le Gallienne, is read in a soft voice and backed by eerie and wistful piano background music. Trick or Treat? Happy Spooky Season, Friends and Fiends! I do hope you consider today's storytelling a treat! I'm so excited to share it with you, as it is kinda creepy in the "Coraline" "Other Mother" kind of way! I do believe Neil Gaiman (author of "Coraline") took some inspiration from this particular creepy tale. Join me as we follow the two "good" sisters, Blue Eyes and The Turkey, as they try their best to impress a strange bedraggled girl with a most curious and unique peardrum! This enigmatic and aloof wanderer will only let the girls see the tiny dancing man and woman inside it if they are very bad. Truly bad. Naughty and terrible beyond belief! This understandable upsets their sweet real mother, and she threatens to leave them to The New Mother, who has glass eyes and a long wooden tail, if they do not change their behavior! Will they turn out good? Will they be bad enough to see the dancers from the pear drum girl? Is this New Mother just as bad as Coraline's Other Mother? We shall see, right now, in this Coraline origin story of sorts! This tale, "The New Mother," by Lucy Clifford, is read in a soft voice and set to some light and soft background music. You may not get the answers you seek, but I promise you're in for an emotional rollercoaster of a fairytale. The sun was shining brightly one day, and a little Sunbeam slid down his long golden ladder, and crept unperceived under the leaves of a large tree. All the Sunbeams are in reality tiny Sun-fairies, who run down to earth on golden ladders, which look to mortals like rays of the Sun. The fairy of the Moon is a woman, and all her beams are tiny women, who come down on the loveliest little ladders, like threads of silver. No one knows why the Sun and Moon quarreled. Once they were very good friends. But now they are bitter enemies, and the Sunbeams and Moonbeams may not play together.Need a story to calm you mind? You've come to the right place!
