What's in a name? Only the wrath of the most ruthless of fairies, it turns out! Join me for tonight's fairy tale storytelling of "Fairer-than-a-Fairy!" Oh, it's a wonderful twist a many parts of the "Sleeping Beauty" type tale, so let's go!Can't sleep? How about envisioning yourself in a magic castle in nestled in a forest nook, gently swaying on the breeze. Right! Because it's suspended on silver chains from the tallest of trees. Of course! BUT the most luxurious part of the whole thing is the cushy swing suspended INSIDE the suspended castle, rocking Prince Rainbow deeper and deeper into his enchanted sleep. Nice twist, right? Join me for tonight's travails among the sun, moon, and even the stars! We follow one girl, unfortunately named "Fairer than a Fairy" by her grateful and doting father, the King. She gets kidnapped by the evil fairy, Lagree, who keeps her in a castle with only two chores: Keep the magical fire lit, and guard Lagree's own remaining eye and tooth. Fun! It is here that Fairer-than-a-Fairy meets the sonically attractive "Prince Rainbow" - named so because that is the only way he can appear to her! Long and short of it, Fairer and Rainbow fall deeply in love after years of conversation. Unfortunately, his time is running out, and he is taken away, but not before askingFairer to marry him. She then sets off on a quest to save him - crossing the dangerous Locrinos, (er... really his nice wife?) three fairy sisters who each bestow gifts, and to the most curious palace ever seen. All ends well - turns out Prince Rainbow... King Rainbow... is a VERY important person, after all! This tale, "Fairer than a Fairy," is from Andrew Lang's "Yellow Fairy Book" and is read in a soft voice and set to some light and soft background music. I do hope you enjoy the this evening's fairer fairytale!"Ascending the Vale, Teller of the Tales" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ This tale is from a compendium of tales, which is now in public domain. Let's get ghosty! Follow my voice into the dreaded Bly Manor, for this spooky calm reading of Henry James' "The Turn of the Screw!" (Part 6!)Good evening friends, fiends, and night owl supremes! Welcome back for more of the ghost story behind "The Haunting of Bly Manor" - "The Turn of the Screw" Part 6 (Chapters 15, 16, and 17!) The governess, of Bly Manor, reeling after a creepy encounter with little soo-smooth Miles Wingrave in the churchyard, rushes back to Bly Manor, her mind set on leaving it all behind! It’s there that she comes face to face with the ghost of Miss Jessel, in the schoolroom. She calls her terrible names, and the ghost vanishes. Later, she tells Mrs. Grose all about the encounter, and both women decide that yes, they have to write to the Flora and Mile's uncle in Harley Street, and get hime to come to Bly and sort the ghostly mess out. The governess tries to start the letter, but goes and hovers outside of Mile’s bedroom instead. She and he talk more openly about all the creepiness, but not really? It’s still cat and mouse. She threatens that she is writing the uncle, and Miles is like “good. It's about time you saw to my education.” She then admits that she wants to help him fight whatever it is that is troubling him so (it's the ghost of Peter Quint!), but then Miles screams, it gets really windy (even though the window is closed), and the candle goes out. Miles creepily says it was him who did it, but he adds a “dear,” so we kinda think it’s not HIM speaking anymore…Tonight is Part 6, or chapters 15, 16, and 17, of this long, old ghost story, and things are taking a turn for the spookier! It is once again spooky time! This time it's more... creepy? Like, little kid acting creepy. YEP! Little dear Miles is seemingly possessed? Follow me into this spooky reading of Henry James' "The Turn of the Screw!"Good evening friends, fiends, and night owl supremes! Welcome back for more of the Story behind "The Haunting of Bly Manor" - "The Turn of the Screw" Part 5 (Chapters 12, 13, and 14!) the governess was falling deeper and deeper into her obsession with finding out what was happening at Bly, trying to puzzle out how to solve it, and at the same time trying NOT to let the children know that she knew. Again. Yes, more of that song and dance. Mrs. Grose suggests the governess write to the children’s Uncle in Harley street, but both decide that course of action unwise. There is a lull where the governess looks for specters around every corner, and sees nothing, although she knows the whole time Miss Jessel and Peter Quint are always appearing and interacting with Flora and Miles. She feels like she can’t say anything to tip her hand still. STILL. Anyway, on the way to church, Miles starts acting… odd. Too smooth for a little kid. It’s awkward and uncomfortable, and the governess tis to evade his line of questioning and laugh and smooth the whole thing over… but SOMETHING is WRONG. Tonight is Part 5, or chapters 12, 13, and 14, so we’ll hopefully encounter many more ghostly things that go bump in the night! Mwahahaha. I cried. I wept. I LOVED this fairytale! Prepare to be swept away in this achingly heartbreaking tale of a little ancient tree who found her voice very late in long life. Let's emote with a tree!Tonight's tale is one of late-blooming. Of singing, sadness, and sorrow all in the body of one tree from the beginning of the world. It's also a heartbreakingly beautiful love story, between the North Wind and the Littlest Tree. One that spans centuries, and songs and lifetimes. This tale, from the Green Forest Fairy Book: "The Little Tree that Never Grew Up," is read in a soft voice and set to some light and soft background music. Got too much on your mind? Need a familiar story to just breathe to? Well I'm not sure this is the fairy tale for that, but hey, we're reading it together! Join me for tonight's Sleeping Beauty's Origin Story of sorts - we travel back to Giambattista Basile's tale of "Sun, Moon, and Talia" which is creepy in it's old creepy old man king way. Of course. Why would we expect anything else? Ah well. There is also two little fairy babies (which I'm pretty sure where ah... something else in the original) and a jealous queen who makes her husband and sun eat these children (kinda) after cooking them into so many dishes. A whole lot happens, and while it's not a traditional "Happily Ever After" (or maybe it is because this is a traditional tale?) it's interesting for sure! NOT a Disney Princess Aurora Sleeping Beauty happily ever after. This tale, Giambattista Basile's "Sun, Moon, and Talia" is read in a soft voice and set to some light and soft background music. Can you withstand the wrath and icy breath of King Frost? I probably couldn't, and I'm extremely glad to be reading this chilly frosty tale from a blanket fort of my own! BUT it is in line with the snowy wintery weather that is creeping up, so grab some hot cocoa and join me for tonight's fairy tale: "The Story of King Frost!" Come for the story, stay for the prophetic talking barking doggie!Once upon a time there was a wicked stepmother, who loved her own daughter so much, but cared little for her husband's daughter. Ah yes, how well we know this tale! BUT this one has a wintery twist! I was getting "Snow Queen" and "Frozen" vibes very very strongly through this reading. Anyway, we follow a young kind girls who gets dumped off in the forest to freeze (by her father! On her stepmother's wish!) and is instead... not frozen, but rewarded due to her polite and humble nature. You know where this is going. The stepmother wants the same reward for her own daughter, and well... let's just read the rest together, shall we? Have you ever been so anxiety-ridden that you can't sleep? HEY WELCOME TO THE PARTY! That's exactly what starts off tonight's fairytale read, "The Nix of the Mill Pond" from the Brothers Grimm! After that, we get a very sad story of love lost, which, honestly, made me want to cry as I retold it. But fear not! This fairy tale is actually a hopeful one, in the long long end. As always, do be careful what you wish for and bargain away when dealing with a water nix (water sprite!)
