A Simpler Time True Crime

I want to be transparent about this case from the start. While it is technically unsolved, there is a strong and consistent understanding of who is responsible. This is less a whodunit and more an opportunity to walk through our criminal justice system and examine how, over the course of decades, one man was able to manipulate outcomes in his favor. Shorter sentencing, public sympathy, and ultimately a lack of meaningful consequences. It is also a reminder that even when answers seem to form almost immediately, accountability and justice can remain painfully out of reach. One reality that is not always discussed in the true crime space is that families often know, deep down, who is responsible. They are left to live with that certainty while watching that person remain free. Today I am sharing a case like that. Because even when a case is positioned to never be officially solved, the identities of the victims are not erased. A fifth grader comes home from school in 1991 expecting to see his mother but instead is greeted by an empty home and a terrifying scene. Everything from the home pointed to foul play for the mother. Other clues made it seem like aspects had been staged to make the scene look like something that it wasn’t. On the day of Deborah’s disappearance, she was supposed to be meeting with her husband to finalize their divorce. And while that may seem like suspicious timing, he has always maintained his innocence and nobody has ever been charged in her case and her body has never been found. In the years after her disappearance, her mother would tell the papers that she would hear the voice of her daughter telling her not to give up. And with her mothers passing, that quest has been passed down to her brothers. In September of 1968, a young saleswoman named Carol was traveling through Indiana, selling encyclopedias for a company based in Indianapolis. She was part of a small crew made up of another black woman and two white men. That day, their route brought them to Martinsville, Indiana, a town that was already known among Black travelers as a dangerous place to be. As the term was better adopted over the years, it would be known as a sundown town. That evening, Carol began facing harassment. As the evening wore on, she tried to seek help, reaching out to locals and even to police. But by the time night was over, Carol would be dead, brutally attacked at one of the town’s main intersections. Two men were sought as suspects in her murder. And through the years many would be questioned as pressure mounted. Eventually one suspect would be captured. The other was never identified. And some wonder if they got it right. Her story is a stark reminder of the very real dangers Black Americans faced while doing ordinary, everyday things during the civil rights era. It is also a sobering reminder that the echoes of those dangers have not disappeared. And even now, decades later, there are people who know exactly what happened to Carol that night. In January of 2002, a college student is home in Texas for winter break, just days away from returning to school. A treasured pediatrician from Tennessee spends the night out at an NBA basketball game. She calls her mom from the game and mentions to her that she isn’t feeling well. After she gets home, she hosts a couple of girlfriends at her place to finish out the evening as a quiet night in before heading to bed. What happens to her after they leave her home is a mystery, but her family began to worry when she wasn’t around early the next morning to babysit her sister’s children, something she was scheduled to do and would never miss. In the days following, alarming clues would point to her meeting with foul play and circumstantial evidence would cast suspicion and shift public opinion on those closest to her. Still, almost everything in her case is surrounded by mystery. She was known to love jigsaw puzzles, meticulously working on them and then gluing and framing the finished product to display.  A puzzle seems like the perfect metaphor for this case, with little pieces everywhere, that all must fit together somehow but that authorities and her loved ones have not been able to connect at this point. The truth is known. A young woman is living in a small Concord, New Hampshire apartment with her husband and their little boy. Their marriage is rocky, and he comes and goes often, leaving Judy alone with their toddler. During those stretches, she was said to have been uneasy and fearful, convinced someone might break in. Neighbors didn’t quite understand her worry until one summer day in 1975, when Judy was found dead inside her apartment. In the decades since, investigators have looked closely at several suspects, some of whom have since passed away. On a Tuesday morning in late November of 1981, a newlywed met up with a man she thought was purchasing her wedding dress from her. She was scraping together any cash she could for a down payment on a house. Little did she know, the man had no intention of buying her dress. When a young teen vanishes on his way to school, a single note left behind pushes police toward the idea that he was a runaway. But the people who knew him best never believed that. As the days stretched on, that theory began to crumble and a prime suspect emerged. On this podcast, I never center the perpetrator, and that remains true here. But to show just how unsafe the so-called simpler times could be, today I am walking you through a pattern of violence and how one man’s repeated behavior, combined with a weak response from the systems meant to protect children, allowed him to continue harming young boys and likely take multiple lives.This week I’m doing something a bit different. Because the crime spree here stretches over decades and involves so many people, this episode will focus first on the disappearance of a boy named Kipling, how a suspect emerged, and then backtrack to the earliest known crime that suspect committed. The following day, Part 2 will be released which will focus on the crimes that occurred after the suspect’s release from prison. The cases featured in part 2 will largely be that of teen Keith Flemming and young adult Charles Collingwood, but Kipling’s story will continue to be woven in as well. It’s late August of 2001, and a bubbly teenager from a tiny town just outside Bowling Green, Kentucky, answers a phone call on her family’s landline. In 1975 Sacramento, a young girl named Harriet went out to play at the park and never returned home. Her concerned mother called police and tragically, the next day, her body was found in a dumpster just a mile away. Police quickly focused on two local boys who claimed it was all part of a child’s game that went terribly wrong. But as you’ll hear, there’s so much more to this story. Her father — a decorated veteran — was also murdered, there were other attacks on children nearby, and the details of the story simply don’t add up. In the early morning hours of August 19, 1984, a Virginia State Trooper answered his front door and was ambushed. High in the mountains of northern New Mexico, overlooking the village of Questa, a father and his young daughter lived in the dream home he built with his own hands. Friends and neighbors knew him as the kind of man who always offered help and kept his door open to anyone in need. But that open door would one day invite in evil. In early September 1999, both he and his 9-year-old daughter were found murdered inside their home. Now, twenty-six years later, this brutal crime remains unsolved and is just one of several homicides haunting this small, tight-knit community. Investigators have long said that the biggest barrier in cases like these is that community members may know more than they are willing to share, held back by fear of retaliation.
