A Simpler Time True Crime

On January 7th, 1996, a historic storm moved into the Northeastern United States, and first responders across the region began preparing for what they knew could be a long and unpredictable night. When Thomas Dorr received a call from the firehouse where he volunteered in his town, he told them he would head in and stay overnight to help if needed. But Tom never made it to the firehouse.A search for him would end in a devastating discovery at a local park near his home. In the years that followed, suspicion turned toward those closest to him. Still, three decades later, no one has ever been charged in Tom’s brutal death.At nearly 6'8", Tom was referred to by friends as the "Gentle Giant" because of his calm demeanor and love of animals. He was known as a hardworking and dedicated member of his community, someone who consistently showed up when others needed help. His friends and colleagues have worked to keep his name and story alive ever since. In February of 1983, young mother Ora Owens woke up to every woman’s worst nightmare. A man standing over her bed watching her as she slept as she is home alone with her children. After leaping out of bed to try to run for help, the stranger caught up to her, dragging her back into her bedroom and violently attacking her. In the middle of the attack, her four-year-old son Mitchell walked in. He bravely said to the assailant “You’re hurting my mom, and I’m going to tell.” After that Ora was knocked unconscious. Miraculously, she was found still clinging to life and rushed to the hospital. When she awoke, her life was forever shattered when she learned that her other two boys were found at the house, but her son Mitchell was gone. 43 years have passed without any answers as to who tried to kill her that night and what happened to her son. I’m so grateful that Ora has entrusted me with her story and it’s a responsibility I do not take lightly. In this episode, she sits down with me to tell her story fully for the first time publicly on this type of platform. We will tell you more about Mitchell and more about the case than just the scant information in newspaper clippings. And in the end, you’ll hear where the case stands and where there are calls to action. I first came across Detective Robert Klein while covering the 1996 murder of Jasmine Porter. Detective Klein was the lead investigator on her cold case, and more than two decades later, he was the one who put the handcuffs on her killer.Recently retired from the NYPD after an accomplished career that included reaching the rank of Detective First Grade, Detective Klein joined me to talk about what detective work really looks like behind the scenes. We discuss his path through one of the largest police departments in the country, how cold cases are revisited and solved, what families should know when they are still waiting for answers, and he responds directly to listener questions. On a holiday weekend in 2003, a woman was working overtime to get a project across the finish line for her employer. When her digital footprint trailed off and loved ones failed to hear from her, both her friends and colleagues grew concerned. Concern that was merited when a grisly discovery in the nearby Green River revealed she had met a horrific end to her life. On a summer night in 1988, an eight-year-old girl and her mother were at a neighborhood laundromat near their home, sitting together and talking while their first load of laundry finished. As they talked, they barely registered the movements of a man who entered the laundromat and passed through their line of sight. Moments later, he attacked them without warning. Injured and terrified, they managed to make it roughly one hundred yards back toward home before collapsing in a neighbor’s yard. The mother survived the attack. Her daughter did not. Today’s episode explores a case that is especially difficult to comprehend. Crimes committed by strangers are rare, and this one offers no clear motive, other than the possibility that the man became enraged over a vending machine that failed to give him change. Investigators believe the man who carried out the attack fled with help from another person who acted as a getaway driver. It’s not every day that a town of just six thousand people becomes known for so many strange and unlikely things.Snowflake, Arizona, named after Erastus Snow and William Flake, is often described as the most Mormon town west of the Pecos. But in sharp contrast to its religious roots, it is also home to one of the largest cannabis cultivation operations in the country. It is the place where Travis Walton famously claimed he was abducted by a UFO in 1975, a story that would later become a bestselling book and the 1993 film Fire in the Sky. It is even home to an off-grid community of people who believe they suffer from Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and Electromagnetic Sensitivity, living together without modern technology.But what many people do not realize is that Snowflake is also a place where people seem to disappear. In 2003, a beloved grandmother and longtime town mail carrier, just months away from retirement, vanished without a trace, as if she simply stepped out of her life and was never seen again. “There is no actual physical injury, is there, other than some bruising? I am not suggesting that bruising is nice, but there is no disfigurement. There are no broken bones. There are no serious physical injuries, are there?”Those words were spoken by Criminal Court Judge Lorin Duckman at a bail hearing for the man who had been relentlessly stalking and abusing Galina Komar. Galina was present in the courtroom that day, forced to listen as the severity of what had been done to her was minimized. At one point she would note that the judge was more concerned about the placement of her stalker’s dog than he was about her life. Three weeks later, she would be dead. With January marking National Stalking Awareness Month, this episode does not only revisit the injustice of Galina’s case, it examines the ripple effects her murder had across New York City, exposing deep failures in how stalking and domestic violence were treated at the time. I want to be transparent about this case from the start. While it is technically unsolved, there is a strong and consistent understanding of who is responsible. This is less a whodunit and more an opportunity to walk through our criminal justice system and examine how, over the course of decades, one man was able to manipulate outcomes in his favor. Shorter sentencing, public sympathy, and ultimately a lack of meaningful consequences. It is also a reminder that even when answers seem to form almost immediately, accountability and justice can remain painfully out of reach. One reality that is not always discussed in the true crime space is that families often know, deep down, who is responsible. They are left to live with that certainty while watching that person remain free. Today I am sharing a case like that. A fifth grader comes home from school in 1991 expecting to see his mother but instead is greeted by an empty home and a terrifying scene. Everything from the home pointed to foul play for the mother. Other clues made it seem like aspects had been staged to make the scene look like something that it wasn’t. On the day of Deborah’s disappearance, she was supposed to be meeting with her husband to finalize their divorce. And while that may seem like suspicious timing, he has always maintained his innocence and nobody has ever been charged in her case and her body has never been found. In September of 1968, a young saleswoman named Carol was traveling through Indiana, selling encyclopedias for a company based in Indianapolis. She was part of a small crew made up of another black woman and two white men. That day, their route brought them to Martinsville, Indiana, a town that was already known among Black travelers as a dangerous place to be. As the term was better adopted over the years, it would be known as a sundown town. That evening, Carol began facing harassment. As the evening wore on, she tried to seek help, reaching out to locals and even to police. But by the time night was over, Carol would be dead, brutally attacked at one of the town’s main intersections. Two men were sought as suspects in her murder. And through the years many would be questioned as pressure mounted. Eventually one suspect would be captured. The other was never identified. And some wonder if they got it right. Her story is a stark reminder of the very real dangers Black Americans faced while doing ordinary, everyday things during the civil rights era. It is also a sobering reminder that the echoes of those dangers have not disappeared. And even now, decades later, there are people who know exactly what happened to Carol that night. A treasured pediatrician from Tennessee spends the night out at an NBA basketball game. She calls her mom from the game and mentions to her that she isn’t feeling well. After she gets home, she hosts a couple of girlfriends at her place to finish out the evening as a quiet night in before heading to bed. What happens to her after they leave her home is a mystery, but her family began to worry when she wasn’t around early the next morning to babysit her sister’s children, something she was scheduled to do and would never miss. In the days following, alarming clues would point to her meeting with foul play and circumstantial evidence would cast suspicion and shift public opinion on those closest to her. Still, almost everything in her case is surrounded by mystery. In Part 2, we pick back up on what happens after John Rodney McRae is released from prison. In this episode, we leave off after discussing Kip Hess's disappearance and the early conviction of McRae in Joey Housey's murder. After his sentence is commuted, McRae relocates to Florida and other boys begin disappearing. While these cases may appear solved on the surface, the boys have never been located and its believed that there are many more victims out there that have not been identified or tied to McRae. Info? When a young teen vanishes on his way to school, a single note left behind pushes police toward the idea that he was a runaway. But the people who knew him best never believed that. As the days stretched on, that theory began to crumble and a prime suspect emerged. On this podcast, I never center the perpetrator, and that remains true here. But to show just how unsafe the so-called simpler times could be, today I am walking you through a pattern of violence and how one man’s repeated behavior, combined with a weak response from the systems meant to protect children, allowed him to continue harming young boys and likely take multiple lives.This week I’m doing something a bit different. Because the crime spree here stretches over decades and involves so many people, this episode will focus first on the disappearance of a boy named Kipling, how a suspect emerged, and then backtrack to the earliest known crime that suspect committed. The following day, Part 2 will be released which will focus on the crimes that occurred after the suspect’s release from prison.
