September 19, 1937. Folsom, California. Behind the towering granite walls of Folsom State Prison, seven desperate convicts launched a violent escape attempt that would become one of the deadliest episodes in the prison's history. Armed with homemade weapons, the inmates seized Warden Clarence A. Larkin and Correctional Officer Roy G. Best as hostages and attempted to force their way toward freedom. Instead, the escape route became a deadly bottleneck. Gunfire erupted. When it ended, Larkin, Best, and two inmates were dead. Five surviving participants were convicted of murder and sentenced to death. Their cases would become tied to another chapter in California history when executions were carried out in the state's newly installed gas chamber at San Quentin. Decades before Johnny Cash made Folsom famous through music, the prison had already earned a fearsome reputation. On September 19, 1937, that reputation was reinforced by a desperate escape attempt that ended in bloodshed. A school district is more than a letter grade—and student success is about more than a test score. After more than a year of kidnapping, radical politics, bank robberies, violence, and a nationwide manhunt, federal agents finally captured Patty Hearst, granddaughter of publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst. Nineteen-year-old Hearst had been kidnapped in 1974 by the radical Symbionese Liberation Army. Weeks later, she shocked the country by announcing that she had joined her captors and adopted the name “Tania.” Then came the unforgettable images of Hearst carrying a weapon during a San Francisco bank robbery. Was she a kidnapped victim acting under coercion? A willing participant? Or something in between? Hearst's arrest, trial, conviction, commuted sentence, and eventual presidential pardon made her story one of the most controversial criminal cases of the twentieth century—and raised questions about coercion, captivity, and free will that remain debated today. Hallsville head volleyball coach Andrew Harbison returns to From The Press Box to talk with David Weaver about his first season leading the Ladycats and a strong start to district competition. Hallsville challenged itself with a demanding non-district schedule against high-level 5A and 6A competition. Now, Coach Harbison believes those experiences are paying off. The Ladycats opened district play 3-0 without dropping a set, including a big road victory at Whitehouse. Coach Harbison discusses building a faster style of volleyball, handling momentum, developing trust with his new team, overcoming injuries and the players who have stepped into important roles.
