Kicked out of the Pentagon, labeled a "supply chain risk" (a designation usually reserved for Chinese state-linked companies), only for Dario Amodei to be back at the negotiating table days later. Sam Altman, meanwhile, swooped in suspiciously fast to fill the gap, which didn't go unnoticed. Over a million and a half people quietly migrated to Claude, pushing it to number one on the App Store for the first time in its life. The irony being, of course, that Anthropic are perfectly happy building lethal autonomous weapons. They just want Americans kept out of the blast radius. On the quieter but arguably more interesting side of things, Google dropped a native command line interface for the entire Workspace ecosystem, which is the kind of boring plumbing update that builders absolutely lose their minds over, and rightly so. AI agents can now talk directly to Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Sheets and more without the usual browser automation nonsense. NotebookLM also got a cinematic video upgrade, turning static slideshows into full motion AI-generated explainers. It's been a dense week. —— Time Stamps —— 00:00 Anthropic vs Pentagon: The Deal That Could End a $60B Company 11:34 Google Workspace CLI: The Biggest AI Release Nobody's Talking About 17:08 NotebookLM Gets Cinematic AI Video (Google's Quietly Massive Update) 22:24 Claude vs ChatGPT: The Honest Pricing Breakdown 27:44 How to Make $3,000/Hour Teaching AI to Businesses 30:33 Free Vibe Coding Tools: AntiGravity vs Google AI Studio 34:31 OpenAI Model Deprecations: What's Being Deleted & When 36:13 Q&A: How to Actually Get Started with Claude Skills 38:37 The MIT AI ROI Study Everyone Misread 41:29 UK's £40M AI Lab: Why It's Already Too Late 43:42 Final Thoughts & Webinar Details —— More Useful Resources —— Find everything else at https://aiwithkyle.com/

That tells you everything about how badly 5.2 landed. Nobody liked it, it gaslit users into thinking they needed to calm down before asking about banana bread, and OpenAI know it. There's also a 5.4 reasoning model apparently dropping this week, though at this point it feels less like a product launch and more like a fire extinguisher. Cancellations are up 400% and people are migrating to Claude in droves. The bigger conversation though is the one that actually matters: we've crossed a genuine threshold in AI. December 2025 was the quiet inflection point where agents stopped being a buzzword and started actually working. For three years, AI was something you talked to. Now it's something that does the work for you, handling coding, bookkeeping, the lot. Andrej Karpathy put it well: before December, coding agents basically didn't work. Since December, they basically do. That's not a gradual curve, that's a hard line. If you haven't started playing with agentic tools yet, now's a very good time to start paying attention. —— Time Stamps —— 0:00 GPT-5.3 "Less Cringe" Update: What OpenAI Actually Changed 3:23 GPT-5.4 Teaser: Is a Reasoning Model Dropping This Week? 7:12 The 4 Big AI Shifts That Changed Everything (Ethan Mollick) 10:13 From Chatting to Doing: The Real Agentic AI Revolution 19:27 Live Demo: Claude Cowork Handles My Entire Bookkeeping 21:20 White Collar Jobs at Risk Since December 2025 22:08 Q&A: Best Chinese & EU AI Alternatives (Qwen, Kimi, DeepSeek) 24:47 Will China Keep Open-Sourcing AI? Anthropic found themselves declared a "supply chain risk" by the Pentagon after refusing to drop their red lines on autonomous weapons and domestic surveillance, and rather than rolling over, they've lawyered up and are challenging it in court. OpenAI, never ones to miss an opportunity, stepped in within days to take the contract, which went down about as well as you'd expect. ChatGPT uninstalls surged 300%, one-star reviews spiked 775% in a single day, and Claude hit number one in the US App Store. Suddenly everyone's heard of Anthropic. The irony is that Anthropic's best ever week of growth came wrapped in an existential threat. All those new Claude users flooding in, including apparently Katie Perry, were met with overloaded servers and error messages, which is a painful way to make a first impression. Worth noting too: Anthropic aren't the pacifists some are making them out to be. They took a $200 million Pentagon contract, they're fine with autonomous weapons in principle, they just want guardrails. That nuance is getting lost in the noise, but it matters. Six months from now, whether Claude still exists in its current form is a genuinely open question. —— Time Stamps —— 00:00 Anthropic vs Pentagon: The AI Cold War Begins 01:47 Anthropic Fights Back: Legal Challenge Against Supply Chain Risk 04:24 Legal Experts Say Anthropic Will Win in Court 06:49 56 CEOs Sign Open Letter Defending Anthropic 08:36 Why Sam Altman Defended His Biggest Rival 08:47 OpenAI Closes Record $110 Billion Funding Round 10:39 Q&A: Viewer Reactions to the Anthropic Drama 13:05 OpenAI Swoops In to Take Anthropic's Pentagon Contract 14:57 ChatGPT Uninstalls Skyrocket 295% After Pentagon Deal 15:37 #QuitChatGPT: Katy Perry and the Mass Migration to Claude 16:12 Are Anthropic Really the Good Guys? Not a drill, not a hypothetical. And the detail that should genuinely make you pause is this: the government doesn't have a secret, more powerful version of Claude sitting in a classified bunker somewhere. Ethan Mollick made the point well. They're using the same model you get for $20 a month, probably an older version, because new models have to go through procurement before deployment. That's the actual state of AI in modern warfare right now. What that means in practice is worth sitting with. When Claude is a little too agreeable, a little too confident, prone to the occasional hallucination, that's fine when you're polishing a draft or writing a proposal. When it's informing decisions about military targets, the stakes are rather different. The AI arms race isn't some distant future concern. It's already here, already running, and it's built on the exact same infrastructure the rest of us use every day. —— Time Stamps —— 0:00 Introduction: Trump Enters the Anthropic War 0:41 Analysis of Donald Trump's Truth Social Post 2:11 Anthropic's Red Lines: Surveillance and Weapons 3:34 Pete Hegseth Designates Anthropic a Supply Chain Risk 5:58 Impact on AWS, Palantir, and Tech Investors 7:53 Why Anthropic Can't Move Operations to Europe 8:56 US Military Uses Claude in Iran Strikes 11:09 Ethan Mollick on Government AI Access 12:41 Military Training and AI Hallucinations 17:05 Ethical Divide: Domestic vs Foreign AI Use 18:22 OpenAI Reaches Deal with the Pentagon 19:52 Comparing OpenAI and Anthropic Safety Guards 21:14 Drone Warfare and Autonomous Decision Making 22:41 Centralized vs Decentralized AI Control 24:05 Shifting Regulations on Human Control in AI 25:35 Posse Comitatus Act and Domestic Enforcement 29:44 OpenAI's FAQ on Military Safety Agreements 31:10 OpenAI vs Anthropic: Well-Oiled Machine vs Scrappy 33:49 Military Procurement and AI Model Versions 39:28 Claude's Growing Market Share vs ChatGPT 42:12 Scaling Challenges and AWS Risk 46:10 China's AI Progress: Manus and Agentic Tech 49:50 How to Stay Updated with the Newsletter —— More Useful Resources —— Find everything else at https://aiwithkyle.com/

Anthropic and the US Department of Defense have been circling each other all week, and this morning Dario Amodei finally put out a statement telling the Pentagon to do one. The two red lines — autonomous weapons targeting and mass domestic surveillance — remain firmly in place, despite threats to blacklist Anthropic as a supply chain risk, invoke the Defense Production Act, and effectively destroy the company. It is, without question, the most consequential standoff between a government and an AI company we have ever seen, and I am genuinely baffled more people are not talking about it. On top of that, Jack Dorsey cut 40% of Block's workforce, around 4,000 people, and was unusually honest about why: the company is profitable, growing, and simply does not need as many humans anymore. AI did that. We also got Google's Imagen 3 update with much better consistency across frames, and Anthropic, despite potentially ceasing to exist by Monday, somehow found the time to ship auto memory, remote MCP connections, and scheduled tasks in Cowork this week. Busy Friday. —— Time Stamps —— 0:00 Intro: Anthropic vs Pentagon, Jack Dorsey AI Cuts & New Claude Features 0:36 Dario Amodei Says NO to the Pentagon — Full Statement Breakdown 5:28 Red Line #1: AI-Powered Mass Domestic Surveillance 8:13 Red Line #2: Fully Autonomous AI Weapons and "Kill Bots" 10:37 Pentagon Threatens to Blacklist Anthropic as Supply Chain Risk 13:15 Could This Destroy Anthropic? Caught between Chinese distillation attacks at the start, and a Pentagon ultimatum threatening to blacklist them as a "supply chain risk" by Friday, they've quietly walked back their flagship responsible scaling policy, the very thing that set them apart as the supposed good guys of AI. Convenient timing, given the policy dropped the same day Pete Hegseth delivered his ultimatum. Make of that what you will. On the more practical side, Claude Code is steadily rebuilding everything people loved about Open Claude, piece by piece, remote sessions, and now scheduled recurring tasks, so your AI can crack on while you sleep. Google's Anti-Gravity also deserves a mention: it's free, it runs Claude Sonnet, Opus, Gemini and GPT all in one place, and if you're already paying for Google Workspace, you've probably had access to half of this without knowing it. The Pentagon have given them until Friday to strip Claude's safety guardrails for military use (think autonomous weapons and mass surveillance) or face being labelled a US supply chain risk, a designation normally reserved for Chinese companies. It's an extraordinary situation, and the irony isn't lost on me: Anthropic spent yesterday warning the world about Chinese labs stealing their models on national security grounds, and today they're being threatened by their own government. OpenAI, Google and xAI took the contracts and quietly complied. Anthropic are the only ones drawing a line. Elsewhere, Claude Code quietly knocked 13% off IBM's stock price, its worst crash in 25 years, simply by refactoring legacy COBOL applications. If the code moves off COBOL, the mainframes that run it become redundant, and IBM's entire core business starts looking shaky. One blog post did that. And on the education front, UK students are now using AI for nearly half of all their study tasks, double the figure from last year and the highest of any country surveyed. Teachers increasingly can't tell the difference. The education system hasn't caught up and, frankly, it's not clear it knows how to. —— Time Stamps —— 00:00 Anthropic vs The Pentagon: Friday Deadline Could End AI Giant 10:18 Are AI Benchmarks Meaningless? It's a serious accusation, dressed up in national security language clearly aimed at Washington rather than the labs themselves. The delicious irony, of course, is that Anthropic built Claude by training on the entire internet's worth of copyrighted material without asking anyone. Thieves stealing from robbers, as I put it. The second half got into something a bit more uncomfortable: AI and jobs. My honest take is that this technological shift is different from everything that came before it, because AI won't just automate tasks, it'll take the new jobs it creates too. Blue collar and physical work buys you some time, but if your job mostly lives behind a screen, the clock is ticking. My practical advice is simple: don't panic, don't quit, but quietly start building alternative income streams now, because nobody, and I mean nobody, actually knows what survives the next five years. —— Time Stamps —— 0:00 Anthropic Accuses Chinese Labs of Stealing Claude 1:31 What Is Model Distillation? The real problem isn't the building — it's that most people don't know whether they actually need a website or a web app, and that distinction matters enormously. Use something like Lovable or Bolt and you'll end up with a slick-looking site that Google simply cannot read, because client-side rendered apps serve up a blank page to search engine crawlers. Your SEO is dead before you've written a single blog post. So here's how I'd think about it: if you want something static, informational, and discoverable on Google, use a proper website builder or a static site generator. If you're building something dynamic — user accounts, payments, dashboards — then yes, reach for the vibe coding tools, but go in with your eyes open. The right tool for the right job sounds obvious, but in a market where every AI product is screaming for your attention, it's genuinely easy to get this wrong. It's no longer just about which chatbot writes the best email. We're firmly in the agentic era now, where your AI is off doing tasks while you get on with your life. I walked through his breakdown of models, apps, and harnesses live, and it's probably the clearest map of the current AI landscape you'll find anywhere. On the side, the OpenAI vs Anthropic drama continues to be genuinely funny and genuinely important in equal measure. From refusing to hold hands on stage next to the Prime Minister of India, to the OpenClaw saga where Anthropic managed to look like the villain despite being entirely in the right — it's been a rough few weeks for the Claude crowd. OpenAI, meanwhile, are doing a very good job of positioning themselves as the scrappy, democratic option. I've been thinking about this a lot lately, and the short version is: every time you offload a problem to AI instead of wrestling with it yourself, you're skipping the bit where the learning actually happens. Whether it's writing an essay, debugging code, or learning a language, the messy middle part isn't the obstacle — it is the point. The good news is there are some genuinely useful ways to use AI that work with your brain rather than replacing it. ChatGPT's study mode, NotebookLM's quizzes and multi-format learning tools, and the Feynman method are all worth your time. The goal isn't to avoid AI — it's to stop using it as a shortcut for the thinking you actually need to do yourself. —— Time Stamps ——   0:00 Welcome + Claude Sonnet 4.6: Is It Worth Upgrading? 2:40 The AI Learning Crisis: What Is Cognitive Friction? 4:10 My Robot Story: How Claude Code Bypassed My Learning (And Why That's a Problem) 5:41 AI Is Not Just a Calculator: Why This Technology Is Fundamentally Different 6:52 The Oxford University Test: What AI Is Doing to Deep Education 11:54 Language Learning, Duolingo & Why You Need to Fail to Learn 13:50 The Illusion of Competence & The Feynman Method 15:44 3 Strategies to Keep Your Brain Sharp in the Age of AI 18:08 ChatGPT Study Mode Live Demo: Using AI as a Personal Tutor 23:13 NotebookLM Live Demo: Quizzes, Podcasts & Multimodal Learning 30:16 Gen Z IQ Decline, Social Media & The WALL-E Warning 33:09 Q&A: How to Set Up OpenClaw the Right Way (And Skip the Mac Mini) 36:34 Q&A: My Agency Past & Can You Use AI to Simulate Learning? 38:29 Free Resources, Newsletter & Community Links   —— More Useful Resources —— Find everything else at https://aiwithkyle.com/

Spoiler: it's not firing people dramatically. It's doing something far more insidious. Companies are simply choosing not to hire. Entry-level jobs are quietly disappearing, and the 14% unemployment rate among 18-24 year olds is just the beginning of that story. The structural shift here is the bit that keeps me up at night. Economic cycles reverse — interest rates change, inflation settles — but AI doesn't go away. It has permanently altered the hiring decision, and that's not something that recovers in the next bull market. We're talking 19 days between Anthropic sending him a cease-and-desist letter for calling it "Claude Bot" and him selling to OpenAI for what I imagine is around a billion dollars. He's one guy from Austria who's been grinding away on GitHub projects for years, and suddenly every major AI lab in San Francisco is chasing him down. Sam Altman got him, Zuckerberg tried, and Peter's now moving to San Francisco to build a version of OpenClaw that even his mum can use. The project's staying open source in a foundation, which is promising, though I suspect OpenAI will spin off a closed-source version where the real development happens. The big losers here? Anthropic, who fumbled this spectacularly by only ever communicating with Peter through legal threats instead of actually talking to him. They could've partnered with the fastest-growing open source AI project of all time, but instead they're the baddies in this story. And Europe—yet again—loses top talent to Silicon Valley because we simply don't have the ecosystem or resources to compete. Fair play to Peter though. Thirteen years of building, 40+ projects on GitHub, and he's finally hit something genuinely transformative. OpenClaw is essentially the Jarvis we were promised—a persistent AI assistant that actually works proactively rather than just sitting there waiting to be asked. It's got rough edges and security concerns, but as a preview of what's coming, it's bloody exciting. —— Time Stamps ——   00:00 OpenClaw Sold to OpenAI: How One Developer Became a Billionaire 01:45 What Is OpenClaw? It's called Lean Testing, borrowed from the Lean Startup methodology, and with AI we can now test ideas ridiculously quickly. The concept is beautifully simple: flip the entire process around. Instead of building in secret for six months, polishing everything to perfection, then launching to crickets, you sell the thing first and build it after you know people actually want it. Sounds backwards, feels backwards, but it works. I walked through my actual setup from yesterday—the sales pages, the Meta ads, the whole flow—showing how you can test multiple variations of an idea without touching a line of code or building the actual product. The beautiful part is you avoid that soul-crushing moment where you've poured your heart into something and the market just shrugs. I also got into some chat about the current AI coding landscape—Codex 5.3 is genuinely brilliant, first time I've seen something match Claude Code—and Google's Chrome AI assistant which is quietly positioning them rather well in this race. But the core message: talk to your market before you build anything. Revolutionary concept, apparently. —— Time Stamps ——   0:00 What is Lean Testing? The piece is called "Something Big is Happening" and it's basically Matt finally dropping the polite dinner party version of what's coming with AI and giving people the honest truth. He draws this parallel to COVID, how in February 2020 most of us weren't paying attention until suddenly the entire world changed in three weeks. His argument is we're in that same "this seems overblown" phase right now, except this is going to be much bigger than COVID. I've had this exact same feeling for ages—whenever I'm at parties and people say "AI can never do MY job," I just bite my tongue because polite company doesn't appreciate someone going hard on how their entire profession is about to be upended. The essay covers everything from where we actually are with AI capabilities (spoiler: way further than most people realize) to what you should be doing about it right now. Matt talks about how a remarkably small number of people—maybe a few hundred researchers at OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google—are shaping the entire future, and how most companies are still using AI like it's a slightly better search engine. His main point is that there's a brief window right now where being the person who actually knows how to use these tools properly makes you the most valuable person in the room. I completely agree with his take that if your company is banning or pushing back on AI, it's done—might not feel like it yet, but in a couple years they'll be crushed. The whole thing is worth reading, so I'm putting it in tomorrow's newsletter. Instead, I'm diving into OpenClaw (or Claude Bot, whatever you want to call it) because whilst it's been out for a few weeks and absolutely exploded on GitHub—185,000 stars and climbing past React, closing in on Linux of all things—there's still loads of confusion about what you can actually use it for. Should you be using it? Are you falling behind if you're not? Spoiler: my mum asked me to set it up for her and I told her not to bother, so no, you're not obligated. What I'm covering today is practical use cases rather than installation steps, because the real question isn't "how do I install it" but "what can I do with it that I couldn't do before." The key difference is that OpenClaw is always on—it's proactive rather than reactive, so you can set it up like an employee that autonomously handles tasks whilst you get on with other things. I'll walk through examples from the showcase and various meetups happening in San Francisco and Vienna, plus we'll touch on running local models if that's your thing, though fair warning: running something like Gemini 2.5 properly requires about a quarter million quid in GPUs, which is a bit steep for most of us. It's a bold strategy, I'll give them that. They're starting with free and Plus users in the US, promising the ads won't influence responses and will be clearly labeled. The spin is that this lets them expand free access to AI for everyone, which is fair enough given they need revenue. But you can tell from the comments that nobody's particularly thrilled about it. Still, I think it's reasonable—they've got to pay the bills somehow. On a completely different note, I got properly annoyed with the UK government's AI training website. They've spent £4 million of taxpayer money on this thing through PwC, and it's genuinely useless. The "pathways" feature just shows you a filtered list of courses—it doesn't actually create a pathway at all. What's worse, they're missing obvious resources like NHS and civil service training materials that already exist. So I've gone ahead and started building a proper version myself that actually helps people navigate AI training, and I'll release it for free once it's done. Kit just tweeted about it, and I get the same thing constantly: DMs from people with "great ideas" who want to chat before they've built anything. With all due respect, I don't care about your idea. Come back with a link. The technical barriers are gone—vibe coding exists, you don't need a developer or a hundred grand to hire one. If you can't be bothered to prototype something using the tools available right now, that tells me you're not going to put in the work anyway. I'm literally rebuilding that embarrassing £4.1 million government AI Skills Hub myself just to prove the point. The window is closing, and that's what people need to understand. Right now, you're ahead of the curve if you're watching this—you know AI exists, you understand what it can do, and you have maybe a year or two before everyone else catches up. I walked through a proper framework for finding your market, working out what business to build (hint: start with the business problem, not the AI), and why speed matters more than perfection. Peter Levels said it best—do you really have time to wait a few more years before starting? If we hit AGI, it's going to be exponentially harder to carve out a space for yourself. Build now, get distribution now, get customers now. Stop asking for permission. Yesterday's release of Opus 4.6 has properly knocked me sideways—not just because the benchmarks are stellar, but because for the first time I'm viscerally feeling like AGI might actually be around the corner. I threw some heavy problems at it and watched it work, and suddenly all those CEO promises about artificial general intelligence don't feel like hype anymore. It's that "three sleepless nights" moment Ethan Mollick wrote about in Co-Intelligence, where you have to genuinely reckon with what this means for your work, your kids, and frankly, the entire human race. The timing is wild because we've also got OpenAI dropping GPT 5.3 and Codex 5.3 in the same window, so the competition is absolutely cooking right now. Meanwhile, the stock market took a proper header yesterday as investors started processing what rapid AI advancement actually means for traditional business. I spent six hours yesterday testing these new models side-by-side, and Codex genuinely beat Claude Code on a website migration task, which I wasn't expecting. The step change from Wednesday to Thursday has been stark enough that even someone neck-deep in this stuff daily is having to take a breath and process it all. Anthropic just dropped an attack ad targeting ChatGPT's decision to include adverts in their free tier, which is a bold move considering Claude's relatively tiny user base. Sam Altman's response was perfectly brutal—basically saying "we're providing free AI to the world and using ads to fund it, meanwhile hardly anyone uses your product." Fair point, honestly. It's fun watching these tech giants take shots at each other, and ultimately it means better models and more choice for us. Meanwhile, the UK government managed to spend £4.1 million (that's $5.5 million) on an "AI Skills Hub" that's essentially just a poorly organised catalogue of free courses you could've found on Google. The site's a mess—verification emails land in spam, there's no pricing information for paid courses, and I'm genuinely annoyed enough that I'm rebuilding it myself to show what £4 million should actually get you. On a brighter note, Google quietly revealed they've got 750 million users on Gemini, which means they're catching up to ChatGPT fast whilst everyone else is busy firing shots at each other.
