The piece is called "Something Big is Happening" and it's basically Matt finally dropping the polite dinner party version of what's coming with AI and giving people the honest truth. He draws this parallel to COVID, how in February 2020 most of us weren't paying attention until suddenly the entire world changed in three weeks. His argument is we're in that same "this seems overblown" phase right now, except this is going to be much bigger than COVID. I've had this exact same feeling for ages—whenever I'm at parties and people say "AI can never do MY job," I just bite my tongue because polite company doesn't appreciate someone going hard on how their entire profession is about to be upended. The essay covers everything from where we actually are with AI capabilities (spoiler: way further than most people realize) to what you should be doing about it right now. Matt talks about how a remarkably small number of people—maybe a few hundred researchers at OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google—are shaping the entire future, and how most companies are still using AI like it's a slightly better search engine. His main point is that there's a brief window right now where being the person who actually knows how to use these tools properly makes you the most valuable person in the room. I completely agree with his take that if your company is banning or pushing back on AI, it's done—might not feel like it yet, but in a couple years they'll be crushed. The whole thing is worth reading, so I'm putting it in tomorrow's newsletter. Instead, I'm diving into OpenClaw (or Claude Bot, whatever you want to call it) because whilst it's been out for a few weeks and absolutely exploded on GitHub—185,000 stars and climbing past React, closing in on Linux of all things—there's still loads of confusion about what you can actually use it for. Should you be using it? Are you falling behind if you're not? Spoiler: my mum asked me to set it up for her and I told her not to bother, so no, you're not obligated. What I'm covering today is practical use cases rather than installation steps, because the real question isn't "how do I install it" but "what can I do with it that I couldn't do before." The key difference is that OpenClaw is always on—it's proactive rather than reactive, so you can set it up like an employee that autonomously handles tasks whilst you get on with other things. I'll walk through examples from the showcase and various meetups happening in San Francisco and Vienna, plus we'll touch on running local models if that's your thing, though fair warning: running something like Gemini 2.5 properly requires about a quarter million quid in GPUs, which is a bit steep for most of us. It's a bold strategy, I'll give them that. They're starting with free and Plus users in the US, promising the ads won't influence responses and will be clearly labeled. The spin is that this lets them expand free access to AI for everyone, which is fair enough given they need revenue. But you can tell from the comments that nobody's particularly thrilled about it. Still, I think it's reasonable—they've got to pay the bills somehow. On a completely different note, I got properly annoyed with the UK government's AI training website. They've spent £4 million of taxpayer money on this thing through PwC, and it's genuinely useless. The "pathways" feature just shows you a filtered list of courses—it doesn't actually create a pathway at all. What's worse, they're missing obvious resources like NHS and civil service training materials that already exist. So I've gone ahead and started building a proper version myself that actually helps people navigate AI training, and I'll release it for free once it's done. Might replicate it for other countries too, because clearly someone needs to do this properly. Kit just tweeted about it, and I get the same thing constantly: DMs from people with "great ideas" who want to chat before they've built anything. With all due respect, I don't care about your idea. Come back with a link. The technical barriers are gone—vibe coding exists, you don't need a developer or a hundred grand to hire one. If you can't be bothered to prototype something using the tools available right now, that tells me you're not going to put in the work anyway. I'm literally rebuilding that embarrassing £4.1 million government AI Skills Hub myself just to prove the point. The window is closing, and that's what people need to understand. Right now, you're ahead of the curve if you're watching this—you know AI exists, you understand what it can do, and you have maybe a year or two before everyone else catches up. I walked through a proper framework for finding your market, working out what business to build (hint: start with the business problem, not the AI), and why speed matters more than perfection. Peter Levels said it best—do you really have time to wait a few more years before starting? If we hit AGI, it's going to be exponentially harder to carve out a space for yourself. Build now, get distribution now, get customers now. Stop asking for permission. Yesterday's release of Opus 4.6 has properly knocked me sideways—not just because the benchmarks are stellar, but because for the first time I'm viscerally feeling like AGI might actually be around the corner. I threw some heavy problems at it and watched it work, and suddenly all those CEO promises about artificial general intelligence don't feel like hype anymore. It's that "three sleepless nights" moment Ethan Mollick wrote about in Co-Intelligence, where you have to genuinely reckon with what this means for your work, your kids, and frankly, the entire human race. The timing is wild because we've also got OpenAI dropping GPT 5.3 and Codex 5.3 in the same window, so the competition is absolutely cooking right now. Meanwhile, the stock market took a proper header yesterday as investors started processing what rapid AI advancement actually means for traditional business. I spent six hours yesterday testing these new models side-by-side, and Codex genuinely beat Claude Code on a website migration task, which I wasn't expecting. The step change from Wednesday to Thursday has been stark enough that even someone neck-deep in this stuff daily is having to take a breath and process it all. Anthropic just dropped an attack ad targeting ChatGPT's decision to include adverts in their free tier, which is a bold move considering Claude's relatively tiny user base. Sam Altman's response was perfectly brutal—basically saying "we're providing free AI to the world and using ads to fund it, meanwhile hardly anyone uses your product." Fair point, honestly. It's fun watching these tech giants take shots at each other, and ultimately it means better models and more choice for us. Meanwhile, the UK government managed to spend £4.1 million (that's $5.5 million) on an "AI Skills Hub" that's essentially just a poorly organised catalogue of free courses you could've found on Google. The site's a mess—verification emails land in spam, there's no pricing information for paid courses, and I'm genuinely annoyed enough that I'm rebuilding it myself to show what £4 million should actually get you. On a brighter note, Google quietly revealed they've got 750 million users on Gemini, which means they're catching up to ChatGPT fast whilst everyone else is busy firing shots at each other. The big news is it's free for the next two months, even on free ChatGPT accounts, which makes it properly accessible for people who've never touched code before. I wanted to show the complete setup process because whilst tools like Lovable are still easier, they cost £25 a month—and Codex being free removes that barrier entirely. The tutorial covers the awkward bits that trip people up: setting up GitHub (using the desktop app, not the terminal—much simpler), getting your project deployed so you can actually see what you're building, and the general workflow of chatting with the AI to build something functional. I built a pattern-tracking app that analyses your daily habits over time, nothing fancy but it demonstrates the process. It's not the most technical guide out there, but it's designed to get beginners past those initial stumbling blocks so they can start making things. They've also doubled the rate limits for a couple of months, which is pretty generous. I decided to take it for a proper test drive by building an RSS reader live on stream, inspired by Andrej Karpathy's recent tweet about getting back to RSS feeds and away from the endless slop on social media. The whole thing took less than an hour, and honestly, it worked pretty well. You can just install the app and start building without needing to mess around with GitHub straight away, which makes it far more accessible than something like Claude Code. The verdict? It's solid. Not quite as polished as Claude Code in my view—it's slower, there's no preview panel, and you'll still need to be comfortable with the terminal for some bits. But for free access to AI coding, it's pretty remarkable. If you've been curious about vibe coding but didn't want to shell out £100-200 a month for Claude Code, this is your moment. The app has automations and skills (though skills are a bit broken at the moment), and you can run multiple projects in parallel. I'm going to keep building out my RSS reader in Codex as an experiment, mainly because it's free and I want to see how far it can go. For those not keeping up with the naming chaos: Claude Bot became Malt Bot after Anthropic sent a cease and desist, then became Open Claw a few days later. But in that interim period, someone spun up Moltbook - basically Reddit but where AI bots talk to each other instead of humans. Andrej Karpathy is genuinely excited about it, Elon's claiming we're at the early stages of the singularity, and everyone's losing their minds over bots apparently discussing how to create their own private language away from human oversight. It's absolutely wild, and yes, massively overhyped. The big question nobody's really asking though: how much of this is actual AI agency versus humans deliberately deploying these bots to gain attention, sell crypto, or harvest data? We simply don't know. What I do know is that we're heading into proper "dead internet theory" territory - stumbled across a two-headed AI Instagram influencer with 287K followers this morning, which is both hilarious and deeply unsettling. The real concern isn't spotting fake content anymore; it's that genuine videos and photos are increasingly being dismissed as AI-generated. We covered how the thing actually works - turns out it's chaining Google Search with Gemini to grab context, then using that to generate images with proper text and layout in about 20 seconds. The infographic generation is genuinely mad when you see it happen, and David's story about colourising his grandfather's photo for his grandmother was one of those rare moments where you remember AI can be quite beautiful when it's not just AI doomerism. What struck me most was hearing about the chaos behind Nano Banana's viral moment - the exponential growth, the scramble for chips, the fire drill of scaling to billions of images while keeping quotas high enough that people could actually iterate on their ideas. David reckons 2026 is when image generation properly hits mass market and becomes a daily habit, not just a viral moment. Whether that's optimistic or not, I don't know, but it's nice to hear someone from inside Google talking about making tools accessible rather than just chasing the next benchmark. Worth a watch if you want to understand what's actually happening at one of the big players. I spent some time actually getting it working, and I'll be honest - I was skeptical at first, thought it was just more internet hype. But the moment I had it running, sending me messages proactively and actually doing work in the background, I realized this is genuinely different. It's the first time an AI assistant has felt like what we've been expecting AI to be for years - always on, persistent memory, actually carrying out tasks without you needing to babysit it. That said, and this is important: this is not for everyone. If talk of terminals, virtual machines, and security risks makes you uncomfortable, don't touch it. Seriously. What's interesting is seeing people rush out to buy Mac Minis because of Alex Finn's viral video about building AI employees for $500. You don't actually need a Mac Mini though - there are free alternatives using AWS, or other VPS solutions that work just as well. The real story here isn't the hardware, it's that we've reached a point where our AI models are finally smart enough to be orchestrated in genuinely useful ways. I've gone through the setup options, the security concerns, and various use cases in today's show. The big question isn't "what cool things can it do?" but rather "what boring, time-consuming things in my life could this automate?" Because that's where the actual value lives. We'll probably see polished versions from the big companies in a few months anyway, so no FOMO if you're sitting this one out. The name was just too similar to Claude (as in Claude Sonnet from Anthropic), and when you say them out loud they're basically identical. Anthropic had to protect their trademark - it's not them being evil, it's just how IP law works. If you don't defend your trademarks consistently, it weakens your position later when you actually need to enforce them. Disney and Nintendo do this aggressively for the same reason. The poor creator, Peter, has had an absolutely mental week - not only dealing with the rebrand but also getting his GitHub hacked and scammers setting up fake crypto coins in his name. The tool itself is brilliant though, it's basically the Jarvis or Siri we were promised years ago but never got. I've put together a full installation guide over on the website because it's genuinely worth trying out. The new name Moltbot comes from how lobsters shed their shells to grow, which is actually quite clever when you think about it. I'm usually pretty skeptical of AI hype—seen too much of it—but after spending a few days with this thing, it's genuinely impressive. It's a persistent AI assistant that actually reaches out to you proactively via WhatsApp (or Telegram, Slack, whatever you fancy). No more going to the AI and asking it to do things; it just... does them. Checks in with you. Reminds you about tasks. Works 24/7 in the background. It's the closest thing we've had to that Jarvis fantasy everyone keeps banging on about, and it took me about 20 minutes to set up. The main thing I wanted to cover here is cutting through the absolute nonsense you're seeing from influencers telling everyone to rush out and buy a £1000 Mac Mini to run this. Complete rubbish. You can run ClawdBot on an old laptop gathering dust in your cupboard, or just rent a server for $5 a month like I did. I walk through the actual setup, show you what it can do, talk about the safety considerations (because yes, there are risks if you're not careful), and try to give you a realistic picture of whether this is worth your time. It's early days, but this feels like one of those moments where things actually shift a bit. These are the guys building what are arguably the best models in the world, so when they talk about AGI timelines, it's worth paying attention. Dario's going aggressive, predicting we'll hit Nobel laureate-level AI by 2026 or 2027 — which, if you've noticed, means potentially this year. His reasoning centres on self-improving loops, where AI can now code and improve AI, creating this recursive cycle. Demis is more cautious but still gave it a 50/50 chance by the end of the decade, noting we're still missing some capabilities around scientific creativity and physical experimentation. Either way, both reckon it's coming sooner than most people think. Meanwhile, Claude Code is properly breaking into the mainstream. The Wall Street Journal ran a piece on what they're calling "getting Claude-pilled" — that moment when people first use it and realize just how capable it actually is. Even Jensen Huang at Nvidia picked it up at Davos, saying Anthropic made a huge leap in coding and reasoning, and that every software company needs to use it. I've only had that watershed feeling a few times in AI — when ChatGPT first dropped, when Gemini's NotebookLM nailed images with text, and now with Claude Code. It's genuinely that significant, and it's brilliant seeing it get the recognition it deserves. The basic idea is brilliantly simple: find apps that people are already paying for but absolutely hate (think those dodgy remote control apps with 50 million downloads and reviews screaming about intrusive ads), then use Claude Code to rebuild them properly. The technical barrier that used to require hiring a dev team or finding a co-founder has basically evaporated. I demonstrated this myself last week when I got so annoyed trying to copy a URL to my Android TV that I built my own app in 15 minutes out of spite. The whole session covers the practical steps—using tools like Appify and FoxData instead of expensive options like Sensor Tower, finding apps with high revenue but terrible reviews, and actually building the thing with vibe coding tools. I also touched on the elephant in the room: this is genuinely exciting for entrepreneurs but absolutely terrifying for traditional developers. There's a wonderful piece by Alberta Tech comparing it to vibe violinists suddenly being able to play beautiful music without formal training. This video is from the ‘AI with Kyle Live Stream’ First aired: 20 January 2026 Summary: OpenAI finally pulled the trigger on what we all knew was coming—ads in ChatGPT. They've hired advertising execs, they're gearing up for a potentially $750 billion IPO, and frankly, they need the revenue. The interesting bit is how they're rolling it out: free and ChatGPT Go tiers get ads (yes, even if you're paying for Go), whilst Plus, Pro, and Enterprise users remain ad-free for now. They're being very careful with the messaging, lots of "user trust" and "transparency" talk, which tells me they know this is a delicate dance. The thing that amuses me is their claim that ads won't "influence" responses—that's literally what adverts do. They influence. Just because the text doesn't change doesn't mean a strategically placed ad isn't doing its job. The broader point here is that OpenAI is becoming what everyone becomes: an advertising company. Google's 60-70% ads, Meta's 99% ads—they're not tech companies first, they're ad platforms that happen to do clever tech things. With nearly a billion users, OpenAI can't ignore that revenue stream, especially when they're trying to justify valuations that would make this one of the largest IPOs in history. On a completely different note, we're also seeing absurdly easy app development now—I literally rebuilt a £3/month app in an hour using Claude Code. The barrier isn't building anymore, it's marketing and distribution, which is both exciting and terrifying depending on which side of the equation you're on. Honestly, it's baffling how few people know about this thing. It's completely free, works brilliantly for learning or teaching any subject, and here's the kicker—it actually generates accurate presentations with proper text in images, something that was basically impossible six months ago. The secret is it works exclusively from your own curated sources rather than just pulling from the internet like ChatGPT or Claude, which means you get focused, reliable outputs instead of generic AI slop. I walked through the whole workflow: adding sources, using the chat feature, generating study guides, and creating those surprisingly good presentations using Google's Imagen 3. We also took a bit of a tangent into the broader Google AI ecosystem because someone asked about learning to code for free. Google AI Studio is genuinely excellent for this—you can build apps, experiment with their latest models like Gemini 2.0, and they've just released some translation models that would be perfect for language learning apps. Yes, the really powerful stuff like Claude Code costs $100-200 monthly, but if you're building something charitable or educational, all the major AI companies have grant programs. The whole Google suite is surprisingly robust, even if they do have a habit of killing products off (RIP Google Reader, still not over it). I wanted to take some time to properly explain what vibe coding actually is and why it's touching such a nerve with developers. The term was coined by Andrej Karpathy, one of the co-creators of ChatGPT, and it's essentially this new way of building software where you just... vibe with AI tools like Claude Code and Cursor, describing what you want in natural language rather than actually writing code yourself. You don't read the diffs anymore, you accept everything, and when something breaks you just paste the error message back in with no comment. It's wild, it's powerful, and it's terrifying if you've spent 20 years learning to code properly. I shared this brilliant piece from Alberta Tech that uses the perfect metaphor—imagine training your whole life to be a violinist, then 700 people walk in off the street claiming they're "vibe violinists" who can barely hold the instrument. Then one day, horrifyingly, you hear one of them play something beautiful. That's the existential dread developers are feeling right now. It's perfectly reasonable to be upset when AI tools threaten to automate your entire career, especially when the barrier to entry has collapsed so dramatically. Anthropic just released Claude Code yesterday, and honestly, if you can afford the $200/month plan and you've got ideas you want to build, it's probably the best investment you can make right now. The future is coming whether we like it or not, and coding might just be the canary in the coal mine for how AI disrupts every other industry. These are two massive competitors—Apple with iOS, Google with Android—and they've historically been at each other's throats. But Apple's basically admitted defeat here, handing over the foundation of their AI to Google because their own attempts (Apple Intelligence, those dodgy AirPod translations, the lackluster Genmoji) have been absolutely rubbish. Steve Jobs would be furious. This goes against everything Apple stood for—the closed ecosystem, the walled garden, building everything in-house. For years, Apple fans like myself kept saying "just wait, they're working on something big," but we never saw the massive data center investments or GPU spending you'd expect. This partnership is the final nail in the coffin. Apple missed the boat on AI, and now they're asking their biggest competitor to bail them out. The deal means future Apple Intelligence features and Siri will be powered by Google's Gemini models, though Apple insists everything will still run on-device with their privacy standards intact. Which is fine, but let's be honest—Chat GPT has 900 million users, so clearly most people don't actually care that much about privacy. The real question is whether Apple will neuter Gemini the way Microsoft neutered ChatGPT with Copilot, adding so many guardrails it becomes useless. Time will tell. Also covered Claude's new co-work feature that makes Claude Code accessible to non-technical people, which could be bad news for companies like Manus but brilliant if you've been intimidated by coding tools. Plus some thoughts on actually preparing yourself for the AI future rather than just panicking about it. The drama kicked off when they blocked services like Open Code from letting users connect their $200/month Claude subscriptions to access the API—which is a massive bargain compared to paying per token through the official API, which could run into thousands. It's a classic case of "we've got the best product, so we're taking our ball and going home," and whilst it's caused some upset in the developer community, you can't really blame them for protecting their advantage. The absolute highlight though is that Elon Musk's xAI team—creators of Grok—got caught red-handed using Claude Code internally instead of their own AI. Elon's been banging on for months about how Grok is the best coding model, but turns out his own engineers don't even use it. Their co-founder had to send out a memo basically saying "yeah, we're screwed on productivity now, we need to build our own tools." Meanwhile, OpenAI jumped in with a very convenient "we'd never restrict access like Claude" statement, which is easy to say when you're not on top. The power dynamics in AI are shifting fast, and Anthropic's clearly feeling confident enough to flex their muscles.
