The Frequency of Style

The Frequency of Style

2025-10-2925:06

Can you borrow energy from clothing and transmute it into your own? We're exploring that concept in this week's episode 'The Frequency of Style.'  What we talk about: The story behind my $4,000 Prada bag and why it was more than just a purchase How style operates on a frequency and what it means to “borrow” that energy Why a Zara outfit can make you feel just as powerful as Prada (but only when your energy is on point) How to go from borrowing energy and becoming it (and then transmuting everything to match it) How to use clothing, coaching, and creativity as stepping stones to your next level What it looks like when your style begins to match your frequency  A practical experiment to help you notice and embody the energy behind what you’re naturally drawn to Resources mentioned: Style Like a Mother Episode 2: The Prada Bag Story Bonus Episode: The Dragonflies Made Me Do It Follow me on Instagram @laurenmessiah
Who Do You Want to Be? I almost didn’t record this episode. I was tired, just got back from traveling with Onyx (his first flight!), and after being stranded at LAX for 90 minutes without a car seat, the last thing I wanted to do was podcast. But a commitment is a commitment, and I made one to show up every week. This week’s episode was inspired by a DM from a listener who’s struggling with ruined clothes from baby messes, and feeling like she’s losing herself in motherhood. We talk about: - The difference between who you’re becoming and who you want to be- How your style can help you stay connected to yourself- Why your “fancy clothes” are meant to be lived in, not saved- Letting go of perfection and choosing presence If you’ve ever looked at your closet and thought, “What’s the point?” this one’s for you. Episode 12:  The Missing Link: What My Hair Taught Me About Business This week’s episode is a special one, it’s the first time I’m recording on video! If you want to see my face while I talk, head over to my YouTube channel (@LaurenMassiah) and check it out. I don’t know if this video thing will be a regular thing, but for now, we’re rolling with it. This episode wasn’t planned at all. I had a whole calendar mapped out, but life threw me a curveball. I was challenged to say “yes” to things I’d normally say “no” to, and here we are, on video, talking about a topic I never thought I’d share: my hair journey and how it ties into business and motherhood. Buckle up, because this episode is raw, unstructured, and totally off the cuff.   Listen on Apple Podcasts  >> Listen on Spotify >>     What You’ll Hear in This Episode:   My Hair Journey: Growing up mixed race in the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia area), my hair was always a struggle. My mom, who isn’t Black, did her best, but she didn’t know how to handle my texture. From mayonnaise treatments to dreadlocks in college, to chemical relaxers and disastrous DIY experiments, my hair has been a lifelong challenge. It wasn’t until I discovered wigs and weaves that everything changed. That missing link opened up a whole new world for me. The Concept of the Missing Link: Whether it’s hair, business, or motherhood, there’s always a piece of information or guidance that can transform your journey. For me, discovering wigs and weaves was the missing link for my hair. In business, it was learning about marketing and sales. In motherhood, it’s understanding that you can’t do it all and need to prioritize. How to Find Your Missing Link: Stop beating yourself up for not knowing everything. Ask questions. Seek guidance. Pray, journal, or call in the answers from the universe. Once you identify what’s missing, you can take the next right step to get closer to your goals. Postpartum Hair Freedom: Since becoming a mom, I’ve been embracing my natural hair more and letting go of the need to hide behind extensions and wigs. It’s been freeing, and I’m learning to be okay with myself in this new chapter of life.   Episode Highlights:   -"Stop looking at other people and wondering what’s wrong with you. There’s nothing wrong with you, you just haven’t gained the complete knowledge yet."-"If you change the question to start asking for all of the information, instead of beating your head against the wall, everything changes." -"Figure out where you want to go, ask what’s missing, and then call in the guide or the next right step to close the gap."   Resources Mentioned In This Episode: -YouTube Video Episode: If you want to see my face, then head over to my YouTube channel (@LaurenMassiah) and check it out.     Connect with Me: So I have to ask you... what’s your missing link? Episode 11:  Start Now, Figure It Out Later Fire, Aim, Ready, not the other way around! I'm here to convince you to just go for it. If you're an entrepreneur, or anyone who has "given birth" to a business, a new identity, or a reinvention of yourself, this episode is for you. I'm tired of seeing people wait for the "perfect time" to start a business, a family, or anything that feels big and scary. That perfect time never comes! That's why I live by the motto Fire, Aim, Ready, not the other way around. In this week's episode, we're talking about getting it done and embracing the one philosophy that has served me so well in business and, now, in my life as a mom: Start Now, Figure It Out Later. All of the most impactful moments in my career happened because I started before things were perfect. As scary as these moments were, they always worked out better than I could have imagined. Listen on Apple Podcasts  >> Listen on Spotify >>     In this episode, I'm getting real about:   Why overthinking is just procrastination in a different outfit: I've trained over 7,000 stylists, and it's the most common thread I see holding people back. How I started my YouTube channel: It started because two friends told me to just do it. So I had my assistant, who is NOT a videographer, hold my old iPhone in my kitchen, and we just started shooting. No fancy equipment, no scripts, no studio. I just committed to showing up consistently. And that little channel? That channel now has around 90,000 subscribers. It's led to TV spots, press, and over 90% of my customers found me there. All because I just started.  The story behind Style Boss Academy: I launched the course before I ever made the course. I was totally done teaching stylists, I was burnt out. But the idea wouldn't leave me alone, so I went to the beach with my journal and mapped it all out. I had no videos, no curriculum, just an idea and a checkout page. I set this huge, scary money goal, and the pre-launch did almost DOUBLE that. The creation of this very podcast: I didn't get a fancy studio or mic. I'm literally sitting in a Zoom room on my roof talking into my phone because I just decided to get it done. Motherhood, the biggest Fire, Aim, Ready moment of my life: Getting pregnant with my son, naturally, at 43. A total surprise. I didn't have a birth plan, people kept asking me, “What’s your birth plan?” and I’d be like, "Uhh... give birth?". It forced me to let go of control and just go with the flow, and I'm honestly loving this new side of me.   Episode Highlights:   "Overthinking kills momentum. Getting in action is just going to snowball into more action."  "Start now, figure it out later. The finish is always freaking beautiful, even if the start is messy.""Perfect doesn’t exist. The stars are never perfectly aligned for you to make that big, scary decision.""We gotta do it messy. We gotta do it dirty. Because overthinking is just procrastination wearing a different outfit."   A very special announcement! Speaking of Style Boss Academy, the four-year pre-launch anniversary is coming up 🎉🎉 From October 27th to the 31st, I'm holding the first-ever sale on the program, with lots of fun surprises. A Mother of a Vision

A Mother of a Vision

2025-10-0139:21

Episode 10:  A Mother of a Vision Between career and motherhood, I want both! I’m casting a new vision, one that includes a $13M house, pancakes in the kitchen with my kids, and making more money as a mom than I ever did as a single, childless woman. In this week's episode, I'm sharing the story of how a vision I dared to have a decade ago completely shaped the life I'm living today. Now, I'm eight months postpartum, and I get to be a present mom and a badass entrepreneur. I am a 44-year-old woman who has built a career from absolutely nothing to massive success, and that’s a huge part of my identity that I’m not willing to give up. But I also want to be a full-time, fully present mother. I feel so lit up when I’m creating content for my business, and I feel just as lit up when I’m hanging out with my son, Onyx. So, I decided I would make my own path. So, I’m creating a new, even bigger mother of a vision. Listen on Apple Podcasts  >> Listen on Spotify >>     Here’s what I cover in this episode:   The Pants and Shirt Analogy: Why being asked to choose between career and motherhood is as ridiculous as choosing between pants or a shirt. You need both to function! Breaking the Either/Or Narrative: Society loves to pit working moms against stay-at-home moms, but I’m here to say, “Why not both?”  The Power of Vision: How casting a vision for your life can change everything. I share my personal story of creating a vision at 34 for the life I’m living now at 44, and how it all unfolded perfectly. Faith + Action = Magic: Vision boards are great, but you’ve got to take inspired action to make your dreams a reality. I share how I built my business step by step to align with my vision of being a present mom and a badass entrepreneur. Motherhood as a Spiritual Teacher: Motherhood has been the ultimate personal development journey for me. I share how becoming a mom has expanded my heart, my mind, and my perspective on life. Creating Time for Both: There’s always time if you make it. I share how I structure my days to balance work, motherhood, and everything in between. Daring to Dream Big: I’m casting a new vision, one that includes a $13M house, pancakes in the kitchen with my kids, and making more money as a mom than I ever did before.    Episode Highlights:   "If you can imagine it in your mind, it means that in some way it can become a reality." "Faith is fun when everything works out, but when you can’t see the working out, that’s where faith is actually faith." "Dare to create a mother of a vision, even if it doesn’t fit into other people’s narratives."  Resources Mentioned In This Episode:   ⬇️ **FREE DOWNLOAD**:  Boss Mom Time Blocking Template    Connect with Me: I want to hear from you! I'm challenging you to dare to create your own mother of a vision. My Fibroid Story

My Fibroid Story

2025-09-2648:38

My uterus has been through it ... Fibroids, endometriosis, and cysts. Add my age to the mix, and you have a recipe for not getting pregnant. Yet here I sit, a new mom at 44, to a beautiful baby boy. 80% of women will develop fibroids by the age of 50. 25-30% of women will experience symptomatic fibroids. The symptoms? Heavy periods, anemia, pelvic pain, back pain, abdominal bloating, and difficulty getting pregnant or carrying the baby to term. Every time I post about my fibroids journey online, I'm met with a flood of DMs, comments, and emails. Fellow sufferers want hope, to ask questions, and get advice from someone who has gone through it. I'm always happy to respond to these requests because fibroids are no joke. Then it hit me, now that I have a podcast, I can walk people through my entire journey. From natural remedies to surgery to spiritual solutions. So here it is, a bonus episode dedicated to my fibroids. Share with anyone who is suffering. I hope it helps. Listen on Apple Podcasts  >> Listen on Spotify >>
Episode 9:  Baby, Take a Shower!  How To Get Ready with a Newborn Society tells us that being a hot mess mom is just part of the deal, right? One day, I decided to experiment. I got dressed, nothing fancy, just a cute outfit, a little makeup, and my jewelry. I took Onyx and my dog, Yohji, out for a walk to the coffee shop. And you know what happened? Nothing. Nobody held the door for me. Nobody offered to help as I juggled a stroller, a baby, a dog, and my tea. I thought, wow, does the world just hate moms? So the next day, I tried something different. I went out looking like a total mess, hair unbrushed, no makeup, wearing whatever I could grab. And suddenly, everyone wanted to help. People were holding doors, offering to carry things, and giving me those “Oh, you poor thing” looks. It hit me: when you look like you have it together, people assume you don’t need help. But when you look like you’re struggling, they rush to your aid. Society has glamorized the “hot mess mom” look, and while it’s funny and relatable sometimes, it’s not the vibe I want for you. Looking a mess is almost celebrated, but I think it gives women a free pass to look like garbage when they don’t even want to.   Listen on Apple Podcasts  >> Listen on Spotify >>     Here’s what I cover in this episode:   Why getting ready matters: I share the stats and research that prove how self-care routines like showering, grooming, and getting dressed can reduce stress, boost confidence, and even lower cortisol levels. Plus, I talk about how creating a morning rhythm can actually help regulate your baby’s mood (Yes, mama, your self-care helps your baby too!). Making time for yourself: I know what you’re thinking, “Lauren, I don’t have time!” But trust me, you do. I break down how to find those precious moments, whether it’s during your baby’s nap, while they’re in a pack-and-play, or by taking shifts with your partner.  Simplifying your routine: From easy hairstyles (hello, cornrows!) to a five-minute makeup routine, I share my hacks for looking polished without spending hours. I also talk about how I switched to clean beauty products and created a portable “getting ready station” with my trusty caboodle. Wardrobe hacks for moms: I get real about the postpartum closet struggle, clothes that don’t fit, decision fatigue, and the temptation to just wear the same thing every day. I share how I’ve edited my wardrobe, created go-to outfits, and embraced a “capsule-adjacent” approach to make getting dressed quick and stress-free. The magic of getting dressed: Did you know that what you wear can actually change how you feel and perform? It’s called enclothed cognition, and I explain how putting on real clothes, even if it’s just a cute matching pajama set, can make you feel more capable, focused, and confident.   Episode Highlights:   "Society glamorizes being a mess after you have kids, but feeling put together can fuel your confidence and provide structure in your day." "When you see a mother who is happy and dressed, society assumes she’s either lying about being happy or has a nanny and a rich husband. Why can’t we just celebrate her?" "Looking a mess is almost celebrated, but I think it gives women a free pass to look like garbage when they don’t even want to."  Resources Mentioned In This Episode:   ⬇️ **FREE DOWNLOAD**:  How to Get Ready with a Newborn: Your official get-ready guide with product recommendations.  Or you can download it for free at style.laurenmessiah.com/episode9      Connect with Me: Mama, I want to hear from you! Episode 8:  Romanticizing the Night Shift Sleepless nights? Sign me up! Those first two weeks home with Onyx were rough. My hormones were crashing, and every evening, as soon as it was time to go to bed, I knew I wasn’t going to sleep. I’d be waking up every couple of hours to feed, swaddle, change diapers, and cry. It felt like an endless cycle, and I hated it. But one night, as I sat there in the dark, I had a thought: what if I stopped fighting the night shift? What if, instead of dreading it, I leaned into it? What if I made it something special, something I could actually enjoy? And that’s exactly what I did. I decided to romanticize the night shift, and it completely changed my experience. If you’re a new parent struggling with the night shift, this episode is for you. I am sharing all of my nighttime secrets. This may sound crazy, but they will have you loving the newborn stage. Yep, those 3am wake-ups will have you loving life.   Listen on Apple Podcasts  >> Listen on Spotify >>     In This Episode, We'll Cover:   Logistics of the Night Shift: How my husband and I took shifts to ensure we both got some uninterrupted sleep. The Sunset Scaries: How I overcame the dread of nighttime by shifting my energy and mindset. How I reframed the night shift to make it the highlight of my day. My Night Shift Essentials: Practical tips to create a comforting and enjoyable nighttime routine.   Episode Highlights:   “If you decide that it’s not going to suck, it’s not going to suck.” “Romanticizing those late-night feeds with your newborn changed the whole game for me.” "I'm not into roughing it. I'm into figuring it out so I can enjoy every stage of motherhood."    Resources Mentioned In This Episode:   ⬇️ **FREE DOWNLOAD**:  Romanticizing the Night Shift  Or you can download it for free at style.laurenmessiah.com/episode8      Connect with Me:   I’d love to hear how you’re romanticizing your life! Episode 7:  When My Clothes Finally Fit, Will They Still Fit My Personality? Is that slight "no f*cks" personality shift a big shift when it comes to style? I had just given myself a style makeover before I found out I was pregnant. I was so excited about my new wardrobe, Vivienne Westwood corset pants, bold silhouettes, edgy pieces. Then, boom, pregnancy! None of it fit. And I kept wondering, when I can finally wear these clothes again, will I even want to? Will I be the mom wearing a Jean Paul Gaultier dress with boobs printed on it at summer camp? I went down a rabbit hole researching whether your personality changes after becoming a mother. I retook all my favorite personality tests, and guess what? My personality didn’t change. But even though my personality stayed the same, my style is constantly evolving. Why? In this episode, I share the research I did and the framework I created to help you embrace this new chapter of your life.   Listen on Apple Podcasts  >> Listen on Spotify >>     In This Episode, We'll Cover:   The Trippy Rooftop Moment: That time I felt like myself again… until I looked in the mirror.  Two Ways of Seeing Life: I share a fascinating article I found that changed everything for me. It explains that there are two camps of people: those who see themselves as the same person going through different stages of life, and those who see themselves as different people at each stage of life. I definitely fall into the second category. Personality vs. Style: Why your personality stays the same, but your style evolves. My "Three P's" Framework: Personality, Preference, and Pressure. I introduce a framework to help you understand why your style might feel off and how to recalibrate it. Embracing the Cocoon: Embracing the messy middle (aka the cocoon) before stepping into your new lifeline. Shopping Drama: A surprising shift in my style preferences (Balenciaga is out, Prada is in!), I share how my postpartum style journey has been full of twists and turns. The takeaway? It’s okay to let go of clothes that no longer align with the new you, even if they once felt perfect.   Episode Highlights:   "I see myself as a different person at each stage of life." "Your clothes, bags, and shoes will never evolve, they’re just things. You, however, will evolve and grow. You get to dress the grown, evolved version of yourself." "Your style is influenced by three P’s: personality (your stable core traits), preferences (what you’re drawn to), and pressure (external expectations). Balancing these is key to finding outfits that feel right."    Resources Mentioned In This Episode:   ⬇️ **FREE DOWNLOAD**:  The Identity Detector: Journaling prompts to help reshape your identity  Or you can download it for free at style.laurenmessiah.com/episode7  -The New Yorker Article: “Becoming You” -The Atlantic Article: Want to Change Your Personality? Episode 6:  Attack of the Postpartum Body Snatchers Everyone talks about the baby weight, but nobody talks about the B.O. ... In this episode, we’re diving into a topic that no one really prepares you for: the postpartum beauty experience. From hair shedding to body odor, leaky boobs, and mood swings, we’re getting real about what happens to your body after giving birth. This isn’t here to scare you, it’s here to prepare you. Sure, you hear whispers about baby weight and leaky boobs, but the full picture? It’s a trip. And I’m here to give you the real deal, along with the products that saved me, and the tips that helped me feel like myself again.   Listen on Apple Podcasts  >> Listen on Spotify >>     Here’s what we’re diving into:   Hair Shedding: Why do they call it shedding? I'm practically bald. I’m sharing my go-to solutions to naturally promote hair growth, working with your hairstylist to find confidence-boosting hairstyles, and embracing cute hats, turbans, and headbands. If you’re feeling bold, maybe it’s time to try extensions or wigs.   Body Odor: Postpartum funk is no joke. I smelled like my cat peed under my armpits, seriously. I’ve been a natural deodorant girl for years, but postpartum hormones were like, “Bet I can outdo any deodorant you’ve got.” Enter: The best deodorant balm ever! Trust me, this deodorant is the bomb.  Boob Drama: Four days after giving birth, I woke up with what I can only describe as porn star boobs. They were huge, rock-hard, and painful. Then came the leaks, the clogs, and the blebs. I’m breaking down the essentials you need to survive the breastfeeding rollercoaster, including nursing pads, heating/cooling packs, and how to handle those dreaded blebs.  Night Sweats: I got lucky and dodged the night sweats, but I heard enough horror stories. Think soaking sheets and pajamas. I didn’t get them, but I’ve got tips from moms who did. Stretch Marks: I was religious about keeping my skin hydrated. I’m sharing what I did during pregnancy, what I’ve learned about stretch marks, and some tips that might help you care for your skin. Skin Issues: Pregnancy-safe skincare is a must. I’m sharing my favorite clean beauty products and why Credo Beauty is my go-to. Excessive Thirst: Breastfeeding will have you thirstier than ever. I’m talking hydration tips and the importance of electrolytes.   Episode Highlights:   "Your body hasn’t betrayed you, it’s just going through a process. None of this is permanent." "Hormones are a roller coaster and these are all problems that have a solution. And if the solution isn't there? Time is the solution." "When so much seems to be going 'wrong' with our body, it’s not actually wrong. It’s just part of the beautiful process of growing an entire human being."    Resources Mentioned In This Episode:   ⬇️ **FREE DOWNLOAD**:  Bounce Back My Ass: A Survival Guide  Or you can download it for free at style.laurenmessiah.com/episode6      Connect with Me: Have postpartum beauty struggles of your own? Episode 5:  The Stretchy Pants Surrender I was the stylist who swore by the mantra: “Leggings aren’t pants" until I became a mom  I lived by it, preached it, and believed it with every fiber of my being. But then, life happened. I became a mom, and let me tell you, those beliefs flew right out the window the second I got pregnant. Episode 3:  Having It All Without (gasp) a Nanny  Shock and horror when I tell folks I'm saying no to nannies and night nurses  Can you really have it all? And I mean ALL of it: the career, the relationship, the friendships, the beautiful home, the body, the hair, the nails... while also being a present mother who gets to enjoy every little piece of motherhood? And can you do it without, wait for it... having a nanny? I'm here to tell you, from my own "have it all experiment," that the answer is a big, resounding YES!In this episode of the Style Like a Mother podcast, I'm getting real about the unsolicited advice, the pressure to hire a nanny before my son was even born, and how I found my own way. I'll walk you through my strategies that allow me to run my businesses, coach my students, and launch new projects, all without missing out on my son's giggles and funny faces. I'm talking practical, actionable steps to redefine what "having it all" looks like for YOU. It's not about achieving some perfect, unattainable balance; it’s about creating a life that feels authentic and joyful. The real secret? Learning to be adaptable and go with the flow.   Listen on Apple Podcasts  >> Listen on Spotify >>     Here’s what we’re diving into:   My Nanny Story (or Lack Thereof): I’m sharing why I decided against hiring a nanny, despite the overwhelming societal pressure, especially in places like L.A. The "Having It All" Experiment: For the past six months, I’ve been on a mission to prove that you can maintain your spiritual practice, fitness, business, and personal life without a nanny. I get my nails done, see my friends, and haven't missed a moment of my son growing up. Busting Mom Stereotypes: For so long, we've been sold this either/or story. You're either a stay-at-home mom, or you're a "working mom" who kisses the baby on the forehead and dashes out the door, leaving a nanny to do the rest. But what if you don't fit into either of those boxes? What if you want to build your empire with your baby right there with you? Time Collapsing Strategies: Learn how I manage to run my business, coach students, and launch a new division—all while being a full-time mom. I'm giving you my secrets to collapsing time and getting more done. Redefining Your "All": I'll show you how to have your own version of "all" by making strategic adjustments, not sacrifices. Your life doesn't have to be perfectly balanced to be fulfilling. The Power of Flow: The real secret to making it all work? Being adaptable and learning to go with the flow, even when things get chaotic.   Episode Highlights:   "My plan was to give up nothing and still be there for my child." "If you tell me something's impossible, I am going to make it possible."  "I want to live the life of both.
