In Part 4 of A Next Day, we learn about the oppressive laws that Sam, Karen, and AJ are living under in a fascist USA that hasn't seen a democratic election in more than five years. In the future, the Giovanni's Room community lays one of its members to rest, and AJ reveals that what's left of America is owned almost entirely by three mega corporations. Back in the past at the pizza parlor, AJ has a run-in with a drunk man and defends themself.
In Part 3 of A Next Day, AJ, Sam, and Karen go out for pizza and discuss AJ's observations about why society is so sick. In the future, AJ awakens after an entire day of sleep, and Karen makes a potentially life-changing discovery that could help the Giovanni's Room community thrive like never before.
In Part 1 of A Next Day, we find ourselves straddling two worlds -- a dystopian future where the USA has been leveled by civil and world war, and a quietly desperate past, where AJ, Karen, and Sam meet in a bar on a random Thursday night and talk about their plans for surviving the end of the world.
In Part 2 of A Next Day, we get more of a glimpse into the beginning of AJ, Karen, and Sam's relationship. AJ tells Karen about where the ideas that they've collected into Giovanni's Room came from, and we learn more about Sam's past. The death of a community member plagues AJ, as they grapple with how to make sense of strange changes that their body seems to be undergoing. There is an allusion to a romantic history between AJ and Sam.
