"We have decided to put the world's most brilliant software engineers in kids' pockets, and we've expected them to exert a level of self-control that you and I never had as children. It's not their fault." - Chris McKenna Chris McKenna of Protect Young Eyes has some incredibly insightful tips for parents. He says that having a "porn talk" with our kids can be as quick and easy as a ten-second mention on the car ride to school, or a fifiteen-second sentence before bedtime. Early and often is the key. They don't need to applaud, they don't even need to respond, you just need to say SOMETHING to make kids aware that there is inappropriate content out there, and you are a safe person to tell when they see it. It's time to talk to your kids about porn, and Chris tells you the easy way to do it! Chris talks to us about online pornography, social media, AI in schools, EdTech, and so much more! "This idea that we need to minimize risk taking or dangerous elements has really created, unfortunately, a world where there's not a lot of challenge for children. And this has a lot of negative benefits on children's health, development and well-being. Children will find challenges. And if we don't have them available in the playgrounds... then children are going to probably seek it out in areas that are more hazardous." - Rachel Ramsden We have an excellent episode for you with Rachel Ramsden, a researcher at the University of British Columbia, where she works with Dr. Mariana Brussoni, a legend in play research. Rachel helps us answer the questions: Are playgrounds too safe? What would the perfect playground look like? Do we give children enough chance for risk and independence? What is risky play? How much play do children need each day? What is free play? How much should parents be involved in the play of their children? How much recess should kids get? A special thanks to Rachel Ramsden and her entire team that she works with at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Especially her advisor, Dr. Mariana Brussoni, who has done so much work through the years about play, and whose research on which a lot of this is based. If you think Snapchat is just for funny filters, think again. I made a fake Snapchat account, saying that I was a 15 year-old girl. Within less than 30 minutes, the algorithm fed me erotica, links to porn, and creepy religious fanaticism. Our guest Sarah Gallagher Trombley is a former Snapchat executive, and tells us exactly how to avoid these dangers. Sarah is an expert on parental controls, cell phone safety, and social media. She explains how parents can keep kids safe from online predators, sextortion, and inappropriate content. Sarah is offering a webinar in conjunction with Healthy Screen Habits called: Safe Social Media?!?! How To Make Social Media As Safe As It CAN Be - the 3 part webinar series co-created by Digital Mom Media and Healthy Screen Habits. Live sessions are September 8th, 15th and 22nd at 8pm EST. The on-demand version will be available on October 1. "The developers of these educational games are the same great minds that are creating recreational video games. They are experts at the compulsion loop. They are experts at keeping you hooked." - Amy Tyson Amy Tyson of EverySchool.org tells us everything you need to know about EdTech. Can EdTech really expand what teachers do? Or is it causing addiction and attention fragmentation? Looks like it's worse than we thought. EdTech promised a learning revolution, but the EdTech revolution has failed. Even Bill Gates agrees. “The word memorization has become like a dirty word in education....It's always paired with the adjective rote. Now, rote memorization is memorizing stuff that you don't actually understand. And that's not very helpful. But memorization...is really the basis of learning," Natalie Wexler tells us. "The more information you have about a subject in long-term memory, the easier it is to learn new things about that subject because the new information has a framework to fit into, something to stick to." "If we want kids to be good readers, know, comprehenders of their reading. If we want them to be good critical thinkers, we need to start with building their knowledge." ---- Writer Natalie Wexler has absolutely FASCINATING things to say about memory, learning, reading, writing, and how this is all being affected by the use of generative AI, like ChatGPT. "The number of places that I found kids doing drug deals over Snapchat, for example, nine to one. It didn't start with a conversation and notes being passed in English class, it started over a social media platform. And so I talk about like the dangers of social media that you don't know as a parent walking in with an 11 year old are alarming, honestly. But I feel like somebody needs to tell you this, not to scare you, but to make you aware so that you are very cautious about what you allow." - Melinda Murphy This week, Cynthia talks to Melinda Murphy, principal of Southern Hills Middle School in Boulder, Colorado. Her school has implemented a bell-to-bell cell phone ban, and she tells us the stark differences before and after. Melinda explains the benefits of a phone free school, the improvement in student engagement, the reduction in disciplinary issues, and the return of play! Melinda tells us how to implement a school phone ban in our schools and our districts, and what to say to our own principals, administrators, and school boards. Why are kids addicted to screens? Why are kids addicted to social media and video games? Dr. Richard Freed gives us the answers, and explains step-by-step how tech companys design their apps and games to keep us on as long as possible. Silicon Valley has been methodically implementing a secret science called "persuasive design." They have figured out how to prey upon our deeply-ingrained fears, desires, motivations, and ancient DNA, to hook us on screens, apps, and video games. Richard Freed, a child and adolescent psychologist, reveals why in his book "Better Than Real Life: The Secret Science Addicting Kids to Screens - And How To Save Childhood." He unveils Silicon Valley’s secret science of persuasive design. The psychological science is so powerful that it is able to persuade youth, at a genetic level, that sitting sedentary on playtime screens is better than running and playing, better than engaging with school, better than spending time with family. The result is a tragic public health crisis for kids. The previous title of his book was "Better Than Real Life: How Silicon Valley's Secret Science of Persuasive Design Is Stealing Chilhood." Why is Fortnite so popular? Richard Freed explains that Fortnite is so addictive, because designers purposefully use triggers locked in our ancient DNA, as well as the "near miss phenomenon," and consistent motivators. Richard answers "why are girls addicted to social media" and "why are boys addicted to video games?" Take a listen, because what Dr. Freed has to say is FASCINATING!! Gilbert's viral Substack article caught Jonathan Haidt's attention. Haidt said on his own "After Babel" Substack, "Today, we’re sharing one of the most compelling and entertaining essays we’ve read on what happens when a school goes phone-free. The essay is written by Gilbert Schuerch, a veteran high school teacher in Harlem, NYC. He is also the writer of the Substack, Fit To Teach, where he shares stories from inner city public education and muses on the nature of teaching." Gilbert has some hilarious, poignant, and important stories about how phones have affected the kids at his high school in Harlem, New York. He shares them in a warm and wonderful way with "Screen Less Play More." Gilbert says of his school's cell phone ban, "The results have been spectacular. Teachers don’t have to fight an impossible battle against tech. Students talk to each other between classes. The cafeteria has the sound of conversation. Teachers cover material faster. Cyberbullying has fallen. When a fight happens, half the school doesn’t immediately run out of the classroom to watch. Mindless doomscrolling happens on their time, not school time. Boys can’t watch porn in the bathroom (or the cafeteria). I don’t have to fight an impossible war against the greatest human behavioral psychologists Silicon Valley has ever employed." "In all my years of doing this since 2016, I have never worked with a single family that eliminated screens or significantly decreased screens and went on to regret it. Every single one of them saw a brand new child who slept better, ate better, conversed better, socialized better, did better at school," says Michael McLeod, of Grow Now ADHD. In this episode of "Screen Less Play More," Michael gives AMAZING advice to parents who are trying to navigate, manage, and survive screen time and technology. He has special insight into kids with ADHD. Michael tells us, "executive functions are the greatest predictor of success for human beings, not IQ. Not athletic ability, not grades, not what college you went to, none of that. It is executive functioning skills that help you to move out of your parents' house, get a house, pay the bills, live independently, get a job, keep a job, make friends, keep friends. That's executive functioning, period. And executive functions are developed and strengthened through relationships and experiences." Welcome to the Screen Less Play More Podcast with Cynthia Dvorak! In her practice, therapist Tessa Stuckey started recognizing a trend about 6 years ago. “Kids would come to me with typical life stressors, mom got mad at them, they didn’t empty their dishwasher, or they made a C on a chemistry exam. Typical life stressors. But their go-to answer was always a dark, dark thought, whether that be self-harm or suicidal thinking.” Tessa started investigating and found that “every single one of them had issues that were rooted back to an overuse of unhealthy screens or social media.” Check out Tessa Stuckey's excellent book "For the Sake of Our Youth: A Therapist’s Perspective on Raising Your Family in Today’s Culture" Welcome to the Screen Less Play More Podcast with Cynthia Dvorak! Kat Zilka was a high school teacher who realized that her students were in a real mental health crisis. She asked her students to write an essay about their relationship to their phones, and was shocked to read their confessions. “Honestly, if you were to read the essays and insert another substance, like alcohol or drugs into, in place of the phone or in place of social media, it would have been addicts crying for help.” Kat formed Dis/Connect to help teens cultivate a more healthy relationship with tech and social media.
