Patreon: https://patreon.com/UnknownPressures | Sorry if we come across as kind of negative sometimes, but we find it hard not to look at things through a microscope. This week's show we turn our focus onto the recent UFC BJJ, and honestly, it's been hard to find something really good to talk about. I mean, it's kind of OK, right? But there is a lot of work to be done.
Anyway, this episode isn't just us shitting on grappling's latest offering. We also discuss the subtle art of commentary in jiu-jitsu, which is a lot harder than people think. Hywel does commentary for many major events and so would really like your input on this one. Drop your thoughts in the comments, please.
Over on the Patreon extended edition of the episode, we continue the CLA / Eco debate, based off a recent conversation with two high level black belts who have wildly differing opinions on the matter. Sorry if you're getting bored of this, but the debate isn't over yet!
Also, we discuss a topic that is.... unusual. A certain person is saying that people should avoid competing in pro events and focus on IBJJF if they really value their careers. Hywel goes off on this person and shreds the argument to pieces, mostly because this person blocked him on social media years ago lol.

Patreon supporters get full episodes and early access: https://patreon.com/UnknownPressures | Welcome back fam. If you didn't see it yet, Polaris 36 was a highly entertaining event with plenty of great grappling matches. Matt and Hywel discuss the highs and lows of the show with special focus on what happened behind the scenes during and after the action.
We also talk about the ongoing trend of high-profile MMA fighters going on sidequests by taking grappling matches, the most prominent of which would be UFC lightweight badass Arman Tsarukyan. It's not a particularly new trend, but it has been happening a lot lately and has even more significance given the UFC's power moves in the world of jiu-jitsu but curious strategy of not bringing in crossover athletes.
We opened up the inbox for questions and got some thought-provoking conversation starters, which had us talking about best practices for getting sponsored in jiu-jitsu, and where we see the sport going over the next five years.
Enjoy, and as always, let us know what you think. You support is much appreciated.

Polaris is coming up this weekend and Patreon supporters get the full 40-min episode that is over double the length of the free version on YouTube and Podcast platforms.
If you've been following us, you know we talk a lot about Polaris as Matt is one of the founding directors of the event. We went through the main card superfights and discussed the most intriguing stories behind each match, and Matt opened up on how they had to consider the sensitive situation of having Sarah Galvao on the event following the recent controversy at Atos.
Also, Matt teases a big announcement for the next Polaris event in Dublin, revealing that it'll be a special Squads event... More details to come soon.

We're taking on a tough topic in today's episode and to be honest we need your opinions on this. Exclusivity is currently one of the dirtiest words in jiu-jitsu as fans are complaining that contracts are holding back the sport and preventing us from seeing the best possible matches.
Matt and Hywel discuss the UFC BJJ's recent signing spree and how the exclusive terms will even go so far as to prevent athletes from competing on ADCC, which has always been seen as one of the biggest and most important events in the sport.
Speaking of ADCC, they recently announced they would finally be changing their prize structure, doubling the cash prizes for champions and podium finishers. The women are still getting short changed though, and good old Craig Jones has stepped in and said he'll make up the difference to ensure they're equally paid. Common Craig win.
We also discuss the possibility of Grappling (capital G) ever making it into the Olympics. This follows the recent news that UWW, the global governing body for Olympic wrestling, has partnered with AIGA to develop their presence in the jiu-jitsu world, but with a clear eye on and path to Olympic inclusion. Matt's suspicious, Hywel's cautiously interested.
Matt opens up about his first Quintet experience in Tokyo, where he took a now-legendary team to compete in Sakuraba's first grappling event. He gives us an inside look at what it was like to be in Japan with Craig and co, it's fun stuff.

Love them or hate them, you're always going to tune in to see the "heel". From Gordon to Dillon Danis, bad guys bring the heat. Even UFC BJJ knows the value of a bad boy gatekeeper, as we discuss in the latest episode of Unknown Pressures.
It's a bumper episode for you today. There were two big no-gi events to recap, namely the wild 2nd ADCC European Trials in Serbia, and the return of Nicholas Meregali at the most recent UFC BJJ.
We also discuss the announcements that Gordon is retiring, Craig Jones may face or may not face Dillon Danis in a grappling match at CJI 3, and that Netflix is getting into the MMA business by booking a weird yet wonderful fight between Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano (it's not really about jiu-jitsu but it's too crazy to ignore).
We also look ahead to Polaris 36 (Match 7th), and Matt shares some of the inner workings of what it's like to be Creative Director of Scramble – be warned, he nerds out about Japanese fightwear brands but does reveal his biggest sources for inspiration.

It was a rollercoaster weekend for jiu-jitsu: Matt and Hywel were in Wales for the excellent Polaris Squads event that saw Team Polaris take a close win against Team WNO, while on the other side of the world a major shockwave rocked one of the biggest and most successful teams in the world of jiu-jitsu.
A female member of the Atos team levelled accusations of sexual assault and misconduct toward Andre Galvao and the Atos leadership team, which provoked a swift and serious response from leading figures in the community.
In this episode Hywel and Matt recap their experience of Polaris 35 and tackle the pressing topic of safe guarding (or lack of) in jiu-jitsu.

Metamoris exploded onto the jiu-jitsu scene in 2012 and immediately set a new standard for what pro grappling could (and should) look like. It started off strong, but quickly gained a controversial reputation for questionable business practices before spectacularly imploding as they left a string of unpaid bills behind them. Even still, it was an iconic event that had a huge impact on the grappling world and the complicated legacy acts as both inspiration and caution to others.
From Ralek Gracie's noble yet ultimately disastrous attempt to professionalise grappling, to Rickson's one-and-done kumite-style jiu-jitsu event, to obscure Japanese submission wrestling and more – this episode sees us discuss some of the weirdest, wildest and most memorable jiu-jitsu and grappling events from years past.

After a short interruption to our schedule (thanks, jiu-jitsu flu) we are back and we recap the major topics and best performances from the world of jiu-jitsu in 2025.
Topics of discussion include:
• Big money cash prizes from CJI and AIGA, but whether it's sustainable or not
• ADCC's weird "in-between year"
• The proliferation of team jiu-jitsu events (best for entertainment?)
• The feeling that superfights just aren't so super any more
• How UFC BJJ wasn't the big industry shake-up people we so worried about
• Gi participation numbers are up, but nobody seems to care
• The growth of jiu-jitsu in emerging countries and regions
• The return of ACB, the Russian powerhouse BJJ event series
• The competitors and athletes that impressed us most in 2025
• Which trends we're predicting in 2026

We question why Hollywood hasn't embraced jiu-jitsu despite it's popularity, how a series of influential BJJ documentaries inspired a generation of grapplers, and Hywel gives an update on the controversial Red Belts documentary.

In addition to stories of eating ridiculous amounts of delicious Japanese dumplings, we discuss:
- How Matt's brand has quietly positioned itself as a leader in South Korea thanks to a very industrious local licensee
- Why a multi-billion dollar company is investing in pro jiu-jitsu in Brazil
- How an unknown apparel manufacturer came out of nowhere to land one of the biggest contracts in all of jiu-jitsu
- The business model that powers pro events
- Why story telling is so integral to capturing audience's attention
- The professionalism of a young athlete that should act as inspiration for all pros
