Happy birthday to Lane <3 it's Hamlet (1996) directed by Kenneth Branagh! I talked so much on this episode that I lost my voice the next day lol. LFG!!!!!
This week's Rick's Pick is the inscrutable Drowning by Numbers (1988) directed by Peter Greenaway! After a looooong discussion about upcoming 2026 films, we talk about this movie's shaggy, charming style and its counting motif. Also, kind of funny in retrospect that we DIDN'T play a little game for this movie.
This week's Lane's Frame is one of the most Acting movies of all time, All About Eve (1955) directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz! We talk about George Sanders as an early candidate for Get This Guy Off The Screen, Anne Baxter's whole Thing, and, of course, Lane's continued affinity for cool heavy vintage phones. This is the Chop Not Slop version of the episode because I cut out like 25 minutes of us arguing about fandom in the beginning, lol.
This week's Rick's Pick is Magnolia (1999) directed by Paul Thomas Anderson! After a short digression about Secret Santa and Magic: The Gathering, we discuss this movie's star-studded ensemble, interconnected storylines, and general BLEH! vibes.
This week's very special episode is a B-Syde: Anaconda (2025) directed by Tom Gormican. The movie is bad. But the episode is good!
This week's Rick's Pick is The American President (1995) directed by Rob Reiner - rest in peace, king. We talk about the iconic Aaron Sorkin dialogue, the power of movie stars, and how this movie actually looks like a goddamn movie. Plus: a little game.
This episode's Lane's Frame is The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) directed by Anthony Minghella. The first movie in my secret yearlong project to get Ricky to watch a bunch of 1999 Oscar contenders in preparation for our eventual American Beauty episode, we go in on Ripley's great cinematography and winning performances, and somehow don't get too thirsty for Jude Law along the way. Also does anyone else think about how Scorsese uses that Dropkick Murphys song like four times in The Departed? No? Just me?
This week's Rick's Pick is Metropolis (1927) directed by Fritz Lang! We discuss this movie's impressive artistic style and timely Themes (TM). AKA, we bullshit about AI for like 40% of this episode lol. Plus: Ricky watched TWO movies on his own!
This week's Lane's Frame is No Bears (2022) directed by the recently Golden Globe-nominated Jafar Panahi. We discuss the director's prior filmography and this film's metafictional premise. And by we, I mean me, because boy are my arms tired from carrying this episode!
This week's Rick's Pick is The Usual Suspects (1995) directed by Bryan Singer. At one point Ricky says, "chungus sussy", just so you know what you're getting into.
Another year on the books, watchers! Welcome to our second annual Gold Watches honoring the films that We Wanna Watched. Join us in reflecting on our second season of watches and listening to Ricky blow out the mic like 8 times. Plus: a pledge for the final movie of season 3...Thanks to all the watchers watching along at home. Follow us on Bluesky too if that's your thing. Maybe one day I'll just put Ricky's twitter handle in here as well.
This week's episode is a Priya's Pic: Monsoon Wedding (2001) directed by Mira Nair! Priya joins our discussion about the Golden Lion-winning romantic dramedy with insights on the film's treatment of the Indian diaspora. It's a very chill ep. Our show is always more mellow with guests on, why is that?Check out IndieMeme here: https://www.indiememe.org/
This week's Lane's Frame is Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) directed by Mike Leigh! Our third Leigh film covered to date, this dramedy features another complex and slightly grating main character played hilariously by Sally Hawkins. We get into the exacting mid-aughts fashion, the clever episodic storytelling, and the emotional realism of the writing - all this after we dissect the new Mario movie trailer, of course.
This week's Rick's Pick is Blue Velvet (1986) directed by David Lynch! We aren't very impressed by this movie and struggle to connect with its themes and performances. Instead we digress about anime and an Egyptian film Ricky heard about in an Uber. Sorry Lynch fans! Maybe next time.
It's Bugonia (2025) directed by Yorgos Lanthimos!! Despite the power outages trying to stop us, we get sweaty, greasy, and stinky talking about this movie's surprisingly grounded tone, fun sound design, and the wonderful performances from all the cast except for one. Anyway you know what you're getting so just click play. After we stopped recording Ricky said he'd let Plemons "pack every hole" so don't believe his coyness herein.
Happy Halloween! Our final WE WANNA WAIL is this week's Lane's Frame, Kwaidan (1964) directed by Masaki Kobayashi. We spend our time talking about the unique fun of an anthology film, forms of Japanese storytelling, and this movie's beautiful colors and painted backdrops.
This week's WE WANNA WAIL Rick's Pick is Good Boy (2025) directed by B*n L*onberg. Woof.
WE WANNA WAIL continues with The Bad Seed (1956) directed by Mervyn LeRoy! This August's Auteur is a smash hit, and we talk at length about the amazing performances and impressive, serious handling of such intense subject matter for a 70 year-old movie. Digressions include Halloween candy, the three movies Ricky incorrectly watched, and our shoplifting-related mom trauma (mauma). Plus: a little game.
Congrats bro, you got the whole podcast wailing 😐 This week's Lane's Frame is Skinamarink (2022) directed by Kyle Edward Ball. We start with a looooong discussion about Ricky's formative horror movies before discussing our dissatisfaction with this movie's failed execution of its premise. Plus: banana.
WE WANNA WAIL continues this week with the currently in-theaters sports horror Him (2025) directed by Justin Tipping! Special guest Sy is here to talk through this goofy movie's inconsistent ideas, music video aesthetic, and performance by Marlon Wayans. Plus: TIM HEIDECKER?!
