Description
Welcome to How Haunted? the paranormal podcast where each episode we explore the horrible history, and terrifying ghost stories of one of the most haunted places on planet Earth.
I’m Rob Kirkup. Author, paranormal historian, and ghost hunter from the north-east of England. Allow me to be your guide as we dare to investigate in depth the, often dark and troubled, history of each location, and of course, the chilling tales of the ghosts that reside within.

Originally released for Patreons in October 2024 I hope you enjoy this very special episode.
In the 26th Patreon bonus podcast you join me for a very special Halloween Patreon episode as I am on location in the Scottish Borders. You will come with me as I walk these ancient streets and ramparts, and tell you the dark history and ghost stories of the most northern town in England. And of course this October is Vampire Month on the How Haunted? podcast, and there are vampires to found here as you’ll hear not one, but two stories of those neck-obsessed creatures of the night.
So join me this Spooky Season, and together let us ask, just how haunted is Berwick-upon-Tweed?

Something a little bit different, this isn't an episode of How Haunted? but rather an episode of a podcast I'm a huge fan of, and we agreed to do a feed swap. So I bring you episode 606 of History Goes Bump. I hope you enjoy it.
Episode 606 - There are two main Spiritualist Camps in America dating back to the Victorian Era: Lilydale in New York and Cassadaga in Florida. We've visited Cassadaga several times, which is known as the Psychic Capital of the World. Almost as often as St. Augustine, and like St. Augustine, Cassadaga oozes spiritual energy. While some people might think that Spiritualism was just a craze during the Victorian Era, it is a real religion that still exists today and is recognized by the military as a standard religion. There are around 13 million practicing Spiritualists in the world today. Many of them still live in Cassadaga and there seems to be many spirits in this small town, not only of the Spiritualists who have already transitioned, but perhaps of the many spirits called to the town. Join us for the history and hauntings of the Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp.

Christmas is a time for ghost stories, so allow me to share one with you.

In episode 124 we continue to focus on a bleak, isolated island where those infected during the black death were brought here and simply left to die. Then on top of that there was the psychiatric hospital which opened in 1922 and rumours of a mad doctor who carried out all manner of inhumane experiments on patients.
Today this island is off limits and very few people on earth have stepped foot on in this plague island, but I’m going to be joined by one of those who have as I am joined by an award-winning journalist, turned award-winning author who loves to spend her free time visiting some of the most
haunted places on earth, and this location definitely falls into that category.
So join J.H. Moncrieff and I, and let us once again ask together, just how haunted is Poveglia?

In episode 123 we set sail for a small, abandoned island which is infamous the world over. Once a quarantine station for plague victims in the 18th century, it later became home to a psychiatric hospital with disturbing rumours of mistreatment and eerie experiments. Over centuries, tens of thousands of lives ended here, their stories lost to time—but many believe their presence remains in the form of the ghosts that have claimed this island as their own.
So join me and together let us ask, just how haunted is Poveglia?

Originally released for Patreons in September 2024 I hope you enjoy this very special episode.
In the 25th Patreon bonus podcast you join below Edinburgh’s famous Royal Mile, where a historic close lies that was once a thriving community in it’s own right. It was open to the skies above, and named, unusually for the 17th century for a woman who was the most successful businesswoman here until her death in 1644.
The building of the Royal Exchange in the 18th century spelled the end for this place, and it would be, eventually, buried beneath the city streets, lost and unused. The close became shrouded in myths and urban legends; with terrifying tales of the ghosts that remain at the close they knew so well in life.
A location we’ve already visited back in episode 18 of the podcast, but we're doing something a little bit special. In April 2024 I found a hard drive containing audio from four investigations that I conducted in 2011 and 2012. Dozens of hours of audio that I lost around a decade ago, and I thought was lost forever. These were four absolutely incredible locations, and I have covered all four investigations - minus the audio from that night - on the podcast previously. So in the Patreon specials across June, July, August, and September I will revisit those episodes and add in the audio, which was seemingly lost forever. June saw us at Middlethorpe Hall Hotel, July was the Edinburgh Dungeon, and last month we returned to York Guildhall. This time out it’s time to once again return to Mary King’s Close. The episode now includes over 2 hours and 15 minutes of audio from that unforgettable night, so you can hear what happened, exactly as it happened.
But what would happen when my team and I descended beneath the city streets to investigate this tourist attraction that has found infamy, since it opened in 2003, and is now regarded as one of the most haunted places, in an incredibly haunted city.
Tonight, let us find out together as we ask the question, just how haunted is Mary King’s Close?

In episode 122 we head to Devon and into a castle that is known the world over by those with an interest in the paranormal. I won’t be alone for this one as I will be joined by someone who has visited this ruined fortress on multiple occasions, as fan-favourite Emma from the Weird Wiltshire Blog joins me to delve deep into the spirits that are believed by some to remain here.
So join Emma and I and let us ask together, just how haunted is Berry Pomeroy Castle?

In the 39th Patreon bonus podcast you join me on my way north into the remote wilderness of Northumberland in pursuit of an eight foot tall hairy monster who made headlines across Britain in the early 2000s. The sightings were considered so credible that a team of professional monster hunters came in search of the beast.
And saw it.
But what would my good friend John and I experience as we enter Bolam Lake Country Park just as darkness descends and we quietly, and cautiously undertake a monster hunt in the middle of nowhere.
So tonight, let us together ask the question, could the Beast of Bolam Lake truly exist, and if it does, just what the hell is it?

Halloween is here...
Over the past few weeks, we’ve scoured the misty shores of Loch Ness, tracked elusive footprints through Pacific Northwest forests, and followed blood-curdling tales from the deserts of the Americas. From Nessie to Bigfoot to the Chupacabra, we’ve crossed continents chasing the creatures that stalk our imaginations.
But tonight… tonight, we’ve saved the strangest for last.
This story isn’t just a legend—it’s a warning. One whispered through radio static, etched into weathered newspaper clippings, and passed down by those who swore they saw something they couldn’t explain.
It’s a tale of glowing red eyes in the dark… of prophetic nightmares… of a town haunted not by a ghost, but by something else—something winged, silent, and watching.
You’re going to need your torch and your courage, as we’re heading deep into the fog-shrouded valleys of West Virginia, in search of the Mothman… and a whole host of other cryptids lurking there.

In the 24th Patreon bonus podcast you join me at a magnificent building we visited back in episode 21 of the podcast, but we're doing something a little bit special. But what would happen when my team and I stepped foot inside this location on a chilly October evening in search of the spirits to be found here, including phantom monks, voices calling out in empty rooms, and a large shadowy man, who’s heavy footsteps are a sure sign of his presence.
Tonight, let us find out together as we ask the question, just how haunted is York Guildhall?

In episode 120 we go in search of towering, hairy beasts that are said to stalk the wilderness. From the snow-covered slopes of the Himalayas to the dense forests of North America, reports of upright, ape-like creatures have refused to die, no matter how much science tries to bury them. In this episode, we’re taking on the heavyweights of cryptid folklore — creatures with names so iconic they barely need introduction.
As Monster Month continues, we venture into regions where oxygen runs thin, tracks disappear into the snow, and something might be watching from the tree line. We’ll examine centuries of folklore, dig through expedition reports, and pick apart the so-called evidence that keeps the hunt alive.
So join me this week as we go in search of the Yeti and Bigfoot.

In episode 119 we continue Monster Month in style by going in search of one of the true behemoths in the world of cryptozoology. This time we’re heading to the Scottish Highlands to look at one of the world’s most famous mysteries. For decades, people have claimed to see something strange lurking in Loch Ness. From blurry photographs to sonar scans and eyewitness reports, the idea of a monster living in the loch has captured imaginations—and stirred up plenty of debate.
So what’s really going on? Is there something in the water, or is it all just a myth kept alive by hoaxes, the Scottish tourism industry, and hopeful thinking?
Join me as we dive deep into the murky depths in search of the Loch Ness Monster.

In this 38th and 39th Patreon specials, Monster Month continues as in this enormous two part special - both episodes of which will be released this month - I do something a bit different as I go in search of a big cat seen across County Durham more than 200 times since the 1990s. It was most recently seen just this summer by a man who described seeing a two metre long, black, machine of a beast.
Joined by my fellow monster hunters John and David, we explore three of the sighting hotspots as we attempt to locate the Durham Puma.
Get access to both episodes at https://www.patreon.com/howhauntedpod.

In episode 118 we’re picking up where last week’s episode left off, as we look at some of the strangest, scariest, and in some cases most plausible monsters to be found outside of the British isles. We will travel to the most far flung corners of the globes in search of these curious creatures that take the form of gigantic killer worms, dinosaurs, snowy tickle monsters, and a reptilian livestock-slaying demon.
So join me as Monster Month continues, and together let us take a look at all manner of cryptids from across the globe.

October is here, welcome to Monster Month.....
Episode 117 is the first of five extended episodes, building to a monstrous Halloween Spooktacular, we’re diving headfirst into the shadows in search of the strangest and scariest creatures ever whispered about. We’re going cryptid crazy—tracking the towering Yeti, peering into the depths of Loch Ness, and chasing legends like the bloodthirsty Chupacabra, the fearsome Kasai Rex, the writhing Mongolian Death Worm, the Beast of Bodmin Moor, the red-eyed terror that is Mothman, and even Muhaha, the Inuit tickle monster.
These are the creatures of nightmare and folklore—some familiar, others you’ve likely never heard of, but all with stories that will make your skin crawl.
So join me as Monster Month gets underway, and together let us ask, what is a cryptid?

In this bonus episode, to celebrate the arrival of October, we’re heading somewhere which isn’t considered by many, if any, as one of the scariest places on the planet. But you join me in conversation with someone looking to change that.
She is a horror writer, photographer and parapsychologist who’s lived in Milton Keynes since 2002 and is undertaking an ambitious project to take a look at the city’s little-explored darker side.
So join Dr Steph Lay and I, and join us in asking just how haunted is Milton Keynes?
Check out Steph's website, and get in touch with her, at https://cityofsecrets.blog

The only kind of communications the spirits are going to give you after that performance in Annie's room was to be laughing their asses off. I don't think spiritual hokey pokey is likely to make any ghosts or spirits receptive to communication but I bet that guy got a real laugh over the fact that he got everybody to do it like follow the leader. Love the show and most of the other broadcasts but that guy was a joke and a charlatan
