Description

The Antifragility Reframe Podcast is a space for deep conversations with leaders, thinkers, and practitioners who thrive in uncertainty. While my previous show, The Reframe for Resilience Podcast, focused on how individuals and organizations can recover and “bounce back” from challenges, this new podcast goes further. We explore how adversity, stress, and volatility can actually make us stronger—not just something to withstand, but something to harness. At the heart of this shift is reframing: the ability to see challenges through a new lens. By reframing setbacks as opportunities for growth, we transform the very forces that might break us into catalysts that strengthen us.

Key Difference: Resilience vs. Antifragility
1. Resilience - The ability to endure shocks and return to a prior state. Resilient people and systems withstand disruption and recover to baseline.
• Mindset - “How can I reinterpret this so I can endure it and get through it?”
2. Antifragility - The ability to grow stronger because of shocks, stressors, and volatility. Antifragile people and systems use disruption as fuel for growth and innovation.
• Mindset - “How can I reinterpret this so I can benefit from it and emerge stronger?”
Resilience helps us survive. Antifragility helps us evolve. Reframing is the bridge — the mental shift that determines whether we return to where we were, or transform into something stronger.

Invitation for Guests

Douglas speaks with Lehigh University alumnus Olufemi Ajewole, a former scholar-athlete who pursued engineering while playing Division I football. What began as a daunting challenge quickly became a defining moment in resilience and antifragility. Facing skepticism from others who doubted he could balance athletics and engineering, Ajewole was forced to confront an important question: Why pursue both?Through self-reflection, family inspiration, and mentorship, he pushed forward despite the pressure. His parents’ immigrant journey from Nigeria and the sacrifices they made gave him a deeper perspective on perseverance. Meanwhile, a mentor at Lehigh offered wisdom that would shape how he approached challenges for the rest of his life.Ajewole later brought these lessons into his professional career at McKinsey & Company, where he learned to navigate complex environments, collaborate across organizational levels, and lead transformation initiatives. This conversation explores how adversity builds resilience—and how the right mindset can turn challenges into the foundation for future success.Key TopicsThe challenge of balancing athletics and academicsOvercoming doubt from othersThe influence of immigrant parents on resilienceThe importance of mentorship in difficult momentsLessons learned as a student-athleteNavigating people, process, and performance in consultingTurning adversity into antifragilityTimeline Summary00:00 – IntroductionDr. Frank Douglas introduces Olufemi Ajewole as part of the Lehigh alumni series on resilience and antifragility.02:00 – The Freshman ChallengeAjewole describes the early struggle of balancing football with a demanding engineering program.04:30 – Doubt from OthersEncounters with people who questioned whether he could succeed in both roles.05:20 – The Power of “Why”Self-reflection becomes a turning point in staying committed.05:40 – Lessons from His ParentsAjewole reflects on his parents’ immigrant journey from Nigeria and the sacrifices that shaped his perspective.07:30 – A Mentor AppearsA mentor at Lehigh offers powerful advice about acceptance and perseverance.09:30 – Two Types of ChallengesLearning the difference between obstacles you can pass through and those you must climb over.11:00 – Applying Lessons at McKinseyHow navigating people and expectations at Lehigh prepared him for consulting.13:30 – Building the Product of YourselfAjewole explains how people, process, and personal growth shaped his professional journey.14:30 – Closing ReflectionsDr. Douglas reflects on the importance of resilience and antifragility for students and professionals alike.Links & ResourcesConnect with Dr. Frank L. It begins with courageous conversations. In this episode of The Antifragility Reframe, Dr. Frank L. Douglas speaks with quality and reliability engineer and author Dianna Deeney, creator of the book Pierce the Design Fog.Dianna shares her journey from the production floor to the design room — and how she discovered that the real obstacle to innovation is not technical skill, but unaddressed uncertainty. She explains how teams can use structured dialogue, customer-focused thinking, and intentional conflict to move from confusion to clarity.Together, they explore how antifragility is built in the earliest stages of product development — before CAD drawings, before prototypes — when teams learn to challenge assumptions, align on purpose, and innovate together. This conversation goes beyond engineering. [00:00-00:21]Ever wondered what to do if suddenly you can't feed your family? The fear, the silence, the feeling that everything you built is slipping away. It's the kind of moment that can break you.[00:21-00:51]It can also awaken you, awaken you to realize that hunger is not just about food. It is also about dignity, connection, and possibility. When you understand that, you begin to realize that antifragility is not just about bouncing back.[00:51-01:39]It's about bouncing forward. Audre Lorde said, "Without community, there is no liberation." When one person can't feed their family, it is not just their crisis. It is our shared responsibility, so we rebuild systems that can nourish everyone, not just the fortunate few, because hunger anywhere is a threat to humanity everywhere.[01:39-01:58]Realizing that begins antifragility. Let us reframe hunger. Let us use it to grow our community.
