Description

I have practiced dentistry full-time for over 30 years, and for the last 23 years (and counting) in a scratch-start practice with my wife. We graduated together from SUNY at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. In addition to my full-time practice, I had the privilege to serve as the first and only wet-gloved dentist Editorial Director for Dentaltown. During the 22 years I was in that role, I had access to the companies that provide the products and services that power our profession. I have conducted interviews, moderated podcasts, written countless polls, published a monthly column, served as a key opinion leader, participated in focus groups, traveled the world and attended more major dental trade shows than I can remember. I have produced numerous video projects where I interviewed guests, shared the latest dental news and provided a ‘man on the street’ perspective at some of the major dental meetings.

I started the Dr. Tom Show to share my experiences, insights and creativity in a new format. Podcasts are already ubiquitous and they are the perfect vehicle for this next phase in my career. I look forward to presenting engaging conversations with leaders in our profession, sharing my perspective on hot topics and creating episodes where I can bring experts together with dental professionals in need of great advice. As a practicing dentist and lifelong question-asker, I’m curious about how people think, what they believe, and how they navigate complex topics.

In this episode of The Dr. Tom Show, host Dr. Tom interviews Jennifer de St. George, a renowned expert in practice management and consulting, who has given over a thousand lectures globally and written numerous articles. The discussion covers various critical topics including managing perfectionist tendencies, team appreciation, and evaluation, and effectively handling common office controversies. Jennifer emphasizes the importance of 'inform before you perform,' addressing issues proactively, and the key elements of building a referral-based practice. She outlines her three-division management model: managing patients, managing the team, and managing the business. The episode also delves into role-playing scenarios dealing with toxic employees, emergency patient scheduling, misaligned treatment philosophies between associates, and long-term employees resistant to change. Jennifer shares practical advice on these scenarios and speaks on the future of dentistry, the role of DSOs, and the importance of maintaining patient referrals.
In this episode I have a conversation with Bill Owens, partner at Owens and Bondell a Dental CPA Firm that is also a founding member of the Academy of Dental CPAs. Welcome to the pilot episode of the Dr. Tom Show. I'm your host, Dr. Tom Giacobbi, and I want to take this short episode to tell you a little bit about my vision for the show. First, a bit about me. I'm a full-time private practice general dentist, and have been for more than 30 years. My wife, who's also a dentist, and I started our practice from scratch over 23 years ago. But you may remember me more from my role at Dentaltown, where I served as the editorial director for more than 22 years. In that role, I wore many hats. I wrote a monthly column. I curated peer content that appeared in the magazine. I produced numerous video segments, attended countless trade shows, and collaborated with dental manufacturers to stay ahead of [00:01:00] trends in our profession. This podcast will be a centerpiece of my continuing work, writing, product reviews, consulting with manufacturers, and sharing my thoughts on the hot topics of the day. In order to maintain the ever important contact with the audience, i've built a simple website where you can contact me anytime. Visit DrTom.show. That's D-R-T-O-M dot S-H-O-W DrTom.show. On that website, there's a simple contact form where you can send me your questions, suggestions, and comments anytime you like. Moving ahead. The shows will take one of three formats. The first will be the traditional interview. This will be with movers and shakers in the dental industry, dentists, consultants, manufacturers, and probably a few [00:02:00] surprise guests along the way. The second type of show will be a one-on-one where I'm gonna share my thoughts on the hot topics of the day. And finally, there will be an advice line style show where I'll bring back one of my expert guests to answer your questions directly. The guest will be announced ahead of time, and you'll have an opportunity to join in the show by contacting me through the website. So from here, let's do the first and most important step. Please follow or subscribe to this podcast on your favorite platform so that you don't miss an episode. If you have a suggestion, a topic, a question you want answered, please reach out to me through my website at DrTom.show. That's D-R-T-O-M dot S-H-O-W. DrTom.show. Thanks again for your time.
