Description

Ten years ago, I left New Zealand with nothing but a dream and a deep pull toward the wild. That dream carried me to South Africa, where I trained as a safari guide and spent years exploring the vast landscapes and hidden corners of Africa. In that time, Africa became more than a place, it became my teacher. The wilderness revealed strength I didn’t know I had, softened me in ways I didn’t expect, and completely reshaped how I see the world and myself.
herSAFARI was born from that journey. It’s my way of sharing Africa through a lens that feels personal, safe, and deeply meaningful.

One of the most asked questions we would get as a safari guides was, “What’s one of your most incredible moments spent in the bush?”So today, I’m sharing one of my most memorable days - a day when my tracker, Ruel Ngwenya, and I had no guests and decided to head out on foot. What started as a casual morning walk turned into a seven-hour adventure filled with elephants, a leopard, and the highlight of it all, a white rhino cow and her tiny calf.Beyond the adrenaline, this story is also a reminder of why walking safaris are so special and important for the overall experience. When you’re on foot, you notice so much more. From tracks, signs and bird nests, to the smells, sounds, and textures of the bush. It’s a chance to really feel and be part of the wilderness, to connect with it in a way you just can’t from a vehicle. It was one of Ruel and I’s most exciting experiences together, and a day I’ll never forget.
Hi my name is Chené Wales-Baillie and welcome to herSAFARI!In this first episode, I share my story - how growing up in the bush shaped me, what led me to become a safari guide, and the challenges I faced along the way. These experiences are the reason HERsafari exists today: to create a space where women can connect with nature and themselves through the magic of Africa.
