Description

We all hear stories almost daily now about cold cases being solved by investigative genetic genealogy. This new crime-solving tool answers the "who" question about these often decades-old crimes... but what about the why? This podcast will look at crimes solved by genetic genealogy, and examine the connection - if any - between the victim and the killer, and why the crime occurred. Each case is unique, and has its own story behind the headline. Join us for DNA: ID. New episodes will come out every other week on Mondays.

Episode 185 Doe ID 'Blue Pacheco' Patricia 'Patsy' Skiple A murdered Jane Doe was found at a truck turnout in Santa Clara county, CA in 1993. Remaining unidentified, she became known as Blue Pacheco, after her clothing and dump site location.  She remained unidentified for decades, long after a famous serial killer was prosecuted for her murder.  Even though justice was served, investigators were determined to give Blue Pacheco her name back – and finally, IGG allowed them to provide answers to her family. Her name is Patsy Skiple, a victim of the Happy Face Killer, Keith Hunter Jesperson. Episode 184 Brad Bellino The 1972 rape and murder of 12 year old Brad Bellino in Boardman Ohio shook residents of the safe, peaceful town.  The case of the little boy abducted and discarded in a dumpster was worked hard by police, but remained unsolved, even as another little boy was taken just three years later.  Investigators never forgot Brad Bellino and David Evans, and when modern DNA testing technology came around, they jumped at a new chance to solve the crimes that were a scourge on the town and a black mark on the Boardman police department.  Finally, thanks to updated DNA testing and IGG, Brad and David's families have answers, answers that, a half century later, came too late.   To listen to every episode of DNA: ID ad-free and get other benefits, simply  visit our channel page on Apple Podcasts to get started with an AbJack Insider subscription. Episode 183 Doe ID: 'The Woman in the Well' Alice Spence The remains of a female were found in an abandoned well in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada in 2006.  Experts and historians placed her murder to the early years of the 20th century – but they had no idea who she was.  Thousands of hours of work dedicated to identifying her were expended to no avail.  And then, IGG solved the riddle of The Woman in the Well, identifying her as Alice Burke Spence.  This is her story.   To listen to every episode of DNA: ID ad-free and get other benefits, simply  visit our channel page on Apple Podcasts to get started with an AbJack Insider subscription. Doe ID: Donna Lass

Doe ID: Donna Lass

2026-03-1641:44

Episode 181 Doe ID: Donna Lass In 1986, a human skull was found along Highway 20 and Interstate 80, 45 miles northwest of South Lake Tahoe, CA. At the time, investigators couldn't come to many conclusions other than the fact the skull belonged to a young woman, likely in her 20s, and she had been murdered. Years later DNA & genealogy would finally reveal the truth; the skull belonged to Donna Ann Lass, a 25 year-old nurse who vanished on September 6,1970 after finishing her shift at the Sahara Hotel Casino. An unknown man called Donna's employer to tell her Donna had left town for a family emergency, which turned out not to be true. Donna Lass was never seen again. It didn't take long for an infamous serial killer, 'The Zodiac', to seemingly latch himself to Donna's case, possibly providing clues, and taunting investigators. For decades, Zodiac's possible involvement muddied the waters in the Lass investigation. All these years later, we may know what happened to Donna, but we don't know who was responsible.  This episode is sponsored by Mint Mobile. Audrey Hoellein Part 1 of 2

2026-03-0901:10:021

Episode 180 Audrey Hoellein Part 1 of 2   The 1994 murder of Audrey Hoellein on her bed in her Vancouver, WA apartment led to a very complex investigation with a large number of suspects.  The case relied heavily on forensic testing, which found the DNA of two men on Audrey's comforter. Investigators could identify only one of them, and he was, for a time, the prime suspect.  But it was the unidentified one – "Individual A" – whom the police zeroed in on.  Once IGG identified him, and authorities started to put together their case against him, it opened a whole can of worms.  The ending is not what you would expect.    To listen to every episode of DNA: ID ad-free and get other benefits, simply  visit our channel page on Apple Podcasts to get started with an AbJack Insider subscription. Episode 179 Doe ID: 'Davie Canal Jane Doe' Lori Kearsey  As in Marilyn Decker's case last week, Lori Kearsey was found murdered and floating in a Davie, FL canal in the 1980s.  She remained a Jane Doe for decades, because she had no ties to the area.  And when she was identified by IGG, it turned out that she was very much missed.  Her killer remains at large, but detectives have a strong person of interest, and are actively working Lori's case.  To listen to every episode of DNA: ID ad-free and get other benefits, simply  visit our channel page on Apple Podcasts to get started with an AbJack Insider subscription. Marilyn Decker

Episode 178 Marilyn Decker   Marilyn Decker's mutilated body, wrapped in a pink plastic bag, was found floating in a Davie, FL canal in 1987. Her case was complex and featured many shady and transient suspects, but detectives could not pin the crime on any of them.  It seemed the case would forever remain unsolved, until one determined detective took a chance on rootless hair evidence, and IGG. And those hairs led to a man police never suspected, an itinerant, seasoned criminal whose violent crimes are just now coming to light. This episode is sponsored by MasterClass. Episode 177  Doe ID: 'Lime Lady' Tammy Tigard   Today's case is that of the infamous "Lime Lady," the young white Jane Doe found covered in quicklime in Oklahoma in 1980.  Investigators had very little to go on in her case, even though her features and physical attributes were very well preserved.  She remained unidentified for nearly a half century.  And when the DNA Doe Project gave her her name back, it simply gave rise to more questions – questions which remain unanswered.  This episode is sponsored by Mint Mobile Premium wireless plans for DNA ID listeners starting at just $15 a month.    To listen to every episode of DNA: ID ad-free and get other benefits, simply  visit our channel page on Apple Podcasts to get started with an AbJack Insider subscription. Episode 176 Phyllis Bailer   In 1972, Phyllis Bailer and her toddler daughter set out to make an evening drive to her parents' house for a weekend visit. The drive from their home in Indianapolis to Bluffton, IN should have taken less than two hours.  But Phyllis and her child never made it.  The next day came awful news for Phyllis's family when she was found dead in a ditch. Her young daughter Jodi was by her side, and suffered only a small injury.  And so began a decades-long investigation into Phyllis's murder.  A prime suspect focused on by the investigators for years and years seemed like the logical culprit. But police and Phyllis's family would not have definitive answers until IGG came along and pointed them in an entirely different direction. With no identification and very few personal possessions, he remained unidentified, known only as Charlotte WalMart John Doe.  When a cold case detective took a class on IGG analysis, he applied the new technique to Charlotte WalMart John Doe's case, and found relatives who had been looking for him for 12 years.  This is the story of Kenneth Robert McCarthy.    To listen to every episode of DNA: ID ad-free and get other benefits, simply  visit our channel page on Apple Podcasts to get started with an AbJack Insider subscription. Episode 174 Barbara Villarreal Part 1 of 2   In this Season 6 opener, you'll hear the jaw-dropping, twisty case of Barbara Carr Villarreal.  Barbara was stabbed to death in her Garland, TX home in 1986. Her husband was also attacked in the home invasion.  But stories and evidence did not match up, and police were left chasing their tails, and chasing their prime suspect who was in the wind. Nothing in this case was as it seemed to be, and justice for Barbara seemed unattainable.  Modern investigators had to solve an identity theft case to find the true name of the person they believed was behind Barbara's murder, and then had to use kinship testing to finally name her murderer.   We'd like to thank the following sponsors in this episode: Masterclass- Learn from the best to be the best. Episode 173 DNA ID Replay Kim Bryant and Diana Hanson While Jess is on winter break preparing new episodes of DNA ID for 2026, we are airing some of our favorite one part episodes weekly in  what we call 'DNA ID Replay' episodes. These Replay episodes will air every week while on break with the exception of Christmas week. In this episode, we explore the case of Kim Bryant and Diana Hanson which originally aired in episode 37. 1979 Las Vegas, a weekday morning. 16 year old Kim Bryant was at a Dairy Queen waiting for her ride – and then she was gone. Her body was found a month later, sexually assaulted, beaten and murdered. A notorious serial killer was the only real suspect – he was executed in Texas, but he didn't kill her. When a tip came in in 2019, new testing was conducted on the biological evidence in Kim's case that isolated a male DNA profile. Forensic genealogy led to the name of a suspect, and further testing of his living relatives revealed that he was the killer of Kim Bryant. But naming him also allowed the LVMPD to close another cold case – the 1983 abduction, rape and murder of 22 year old Diana Hanson. The same killer had struck twice – at least.   To listen to every episode of DNA: ID ad-free and get other benefits, simply  visit our channel page on Apple Podcasts to get started with an AbJack Insider subscription. These Replay episodes will air every week while on break with the exception of Christmas week. In this episode, we explore the case of Susan Negersmith which originally aired in episode 74. Her body was found behind a local restaurant, half naked, shoeless, bloody, riddled with injuries, and with visible marks on her throat. Someone had taken pains to ensure she was obscured from view of passersby – yet her death was ruled an accident. It took her father 6 years to get her death certificate changed to reflect that her death was a homicide – but by that time, the damage was done. Even forensic genealogy, with its wondrous power to provide answers, may not be able to deliver justice for Susan Negersmith. Moving forward states should require to reference entry of the *CONVICTED* person's DNA of any crime on the actual court record at that time is entered in database- include juveniles & misdemeanors! Now that the the tool is here criminals get found & are put away while the loved ones are still living! Just maybe catch them from escalation & hideous crimes! 🙏FOR SAFER STREETS

This show is one of my favorites. The information is as complete as it can be, the victims are treated respectfully, and the narration style is warm, clear and professional. I infinitely prefer this to one of the other popular shows of this genre, in which the hosts gasp and giggle throughout. Highly recommend.

The host is misstating the probabilities of DNA matches here. When she says something along tge lines of "5 times one thousand fifty", she surely means "5 times ten to the fiftieth power". This is scientific notation form for expressing ridiculously large numbers. The tell? The first two digits of the second factor are always "10", no matter how she expresses the number.
