Vet Med For Idiots By Idiots

Hey everyone! Meet Jae. They are an awesome listener/fan who reached out, has some things to say about being in the vet world as a rookie, sometimes scared, sometimes not knowing what to expect, but feeling their way through and getting better every day. Listen up, because they also talk about what it takes to be a great client and what to avoid to not be a boneheaded one! Plus, talks of bottle feeding kittens. So, pull up a seat at the proverbial table, grab a beer (except Jae, Jae will be drinking a soda or juice or something because they're a youngin'), and learn to not just respect your elders, but your younger generation, because they have something worth listening to.    Huge thank you, also, to Jae for this episode. The first two times, the files were lost (see previous episode in Spooky Season about why Cory has to use his wife's computer for the time being), this time, it recorded, but for some reason, our program ONLY worked with cell phones. Fate was not kind to us this time around. I will say, I am incredibly impressed with the sound quality I got from her AirPod Pros, and if Apple wants to sponsor us in the form of, say, a couple new MacBooks, some new AirPod Pros (especially for Kent), and a suitcase full of money (not milk), we would kindly accept!

Spooky Season is finally ending, and the Idiots end it with a fizzle. Piggybacking off of last week's Vampire and Tuberculosis episode, the discussion dives into more vampire legends, including the tie into wolves and bats, disease creating a weakness to sunlight, water and rabies, and how these and other misunderstandings with disease and how it spread directly impacted the lore of the classic vampires we know today. There literally was even a Great Vampire Pandemic. Fun times. 

Keeping the Spooky Season eps rolling, Idiots Cory and Doctor Kent discuss Tuberculosis and the foundation of the modern vampire that has come from it. That's basically it. They talk about how not sexy tuberculosis is, both in what it does to the body (not just the lungs) and the bacterium. Stay vaccinated, stay safe, and don't handle dead bodies that died of an unknown disease without PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). Also, Ellis makes another guest appearance. 

Spooky season is halfway over, and the Idiots aren't going to let it go without a bite...of spooky! The boys discuss a few new cryptids, and talk about why they will not touch a skinwalker-out of respect.

Spooky Season continues, and this week, the Idiots discuss cryptid veterinary medicine on a couple of Michigan's cryptids, an NHL team's namesake, and the most famous goat sucker in the world (there's a "your mother" joke in there somewhere). October is here, there for Spooky Season has begun! The boys dive into this in talking gibberish for an hour, loosely talking about the Snook Hook (or spay hook) inventor, James Howard Snook, who is as well known for his invention, and winning two gold medals in the Olympics, as he is for killing his mistress because it was in Ohio in the late 1920s and nothing else was really going on in that time. Howdy and so long! We hate to say it, but season 3 is about to be in the rearview mirror. Wow. 3 Seasons. It's incredibly humbling to have been able to make it this far, so let me start off by speaking for both Idiots when I say thank you, thank you, thank you for supporting us then, now, and in the future.  As has become a tradition, we like to end or begin seasons with more lighthearted things, and we brought back Dr. Dean Scott for this season closer, and he bookends the season nicely. We talk all sorts of fictional creatures, some from books suggested to us by the Brain Witch Idiot, and some from Dean's books. These include dragons and griffins from the Empyrian Series (for the love of god, Rebecca Yarros, please don't sue me) and the Harry Potter series (for the love of god, JK Rowling, please learn about love) and critters from Scott's book series "The Dragon Vet" and "The Half-Life of Grief". Everything Scott writes is amazing, please, check him out, but check out our second conversation with him. Then, inbetween waiting for next season to drop and re-listening to our entire back log and listening to Cory Johnson and the Broken Nightscape's musical breadth, you can read his many books. You can find the Common Idiot's music on any streaming service. You can also hear a song written and performed in about an hour (without the studio, so the quality isn't great, but it's an homage to you!) at the end of this episode, which may or may not eventually be on all streaming services, with the rest of my music. Also, still planning on a full album out soon. Still so excited. While I'm stealing the spotlight and being selfish for a second, I do want to take a moment to be vulnerable. I have a bit of a...stomach issue. The doctors are still working on figuring out what it is exactly. Don't worry, this isn't a "I have 3 months to live" message, but it's still important to be open. The best guess is GERD, but it presents in a lot of different ways. There are some other health complications that might be along side and either exacerbating the problem, or being a menace of its own. Unsure, and unclear. The worst part, from a performer's standpoint, is I sometimes have difficulty swallowing, and I'm quite literally unable to do anything until it passes. So, if you've heard times where it sounds like I'm letting out a big sigh of disinterest, it is because I'm finally drawing my first breath in 30 seconds, or have moments where I pause for a long time between words, same thing. Adding to this is I have a tic in my face that sort of comes and goes, and I think sometimes these two problems love to tag team me into submission. It honestly has affected my confidence, but that's a whole different thing. The problem manifests itself, too, with a lot of burping, or even just throat sound from my esophogus doing...idk, bullshit things. I normally edit it all out, but it's often extremely time consuming. I did not do that in this one, and it can be heard. I apologize if it sickens you. I'm not a fan of the sound, hopefully everything else distracts nicely. There have been a few other episodes where it was there and I either missed them in editing, or ran out of time and had to leave them. I shied away, I'm not anymore. Also, I'm seeking treatment, trying to fix it, and hopefully it will never be a problem in the future.  A note about Kent. I want to take a second to just thank my best friend on this whole fucking planet for being with me in this. He could have picked a lot more qualified people to run this with, he chose me. Welcome back to another riveting episode where the boys inevitably get distracted and go on tangents. However, along the way, the Idiots talk noses. You know, snoots, boopers, snozzes, sniffers, cold wet presses...the list goes on. Learn about some of the super amazing functions of the nose, why they're better with theirs than you'll ever be with yours, and imagine being able to see the world by scent. All mammals can be affected, but rats and mice are affected the most. However, humans can also be greatly affected. In an Idiots first, the guys take on a three part episode, covering a very breviated history of wolves becoming dogs, then how different breeds came about, going into breeds that have gone extinct over the years or were rolled into other breeds, and then concluding with a discussion about bringing one breed, the French Bulldog, away from the brink of extinction. In what many are calling the greatest trilogy of all time, better than the Lort of Da Rings, Star Warz, Goodfadder, and Alans, the Idiots bring their journey to an end. In this, they discuss French Bulldogs, who were thiiiiiiissssss close to being extinct, and how some lady I'm too lazy to go back and listen or look up saved them. She's a hero, though. They talk again about selective breeding, and how even foxes have been bred to be closer to dogs, and slowly develop floppy ears in place of their pointy ears. Part 1 is the discussion of wolves, specifically a breed of wolf that no longer is on this planet, most likely because it assimilated quietly into modern dogs. They talk of how dogs spread throughout the world, the cause of them joining human ranks, why a symbiotic relationship was so important it came to what we have today, and discuss other things, like ring evolution (editors note, Cory talks about birds on Darwin Island and erroneously refers to them as wrens, but they were actually finches) and selective breeding for working needs. 

The Idiots have talked about what it's like when you're an established vet, what it's like going through vet school, and what it's like in internships, residencies, and clinicals, but that murky inbetween has not been breached. That's where Dr. Maddy Golichowski (or as Kent says "Gahlowzzskckksheeee") comes in. Dr. Maddy is well into her second year as a practicing vet, which allows her the hindsight of a first year without the distance in time obscuring her view. We talk pros, cons, and difficulties with being green in the field. Listen up, this rookie is going to do great things, and The Idiots were happy to be along for the ride. 

We did a crossover thing! The lovely Dr. Amy Pike and Dr Amy Learn were gracious enough to share a show with us. Vet Med For Idiots By Idiots collides with Behavior Buzzzzzz with 2 Amys, and the result is wonderful. Lots of laughs, lots of information, much of it to do with simplifying dog behavior, understanding how to interpret their mannerisms and actions, and why some things get confused due to outdated thoughts. If there is something that we can all agree on wholeheartedly, it's "f*#$ cancer", right? This week, The Idiots bring on The Oncology Idiot, Dr. Christopher Fulkerson, who is at the forefront of cancer research for animals. Join us as we break down why there isn't a simple cure for cancer, the ways we are advancing in medicine, how the research process goes, and why animal research is great for humans, as breakthroughs with the former can jump to the latter.  Also, Dr. Kent ALMOST laughs at Cory's joke, so that's exciting. 

This week, The Idiots discuss White Coat Syndrome, which is a phenomenon where nerves override the body in anticipation of seeing a doctor. Can be the building, the area, the lobby, the doctor-something just gets ahold of the animals. This can happen to humans, as well. We are lobbying for a new law where pizza and tacos are given free at the doctor, to make it more enjoyable and to relate good with the clinic. We do the same with animals! Anyway, listen in to hear about WCS, how you can help your pets get through it, and the pitfalls of failing to be prepared for a visit with an anxious dog. Just remember, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

The boys talk preventative medicine, including checks ups, vaccines, and other routine maintainence for your pet. Be it self care, calming techniques, or just being kind to yourself in general, you matter, and vets have incredibly stressful jobs.
