Content Note: This episode discusses suicide, suicidal thoughts and mental health. Please take care while listening. What if understanding the link between hormonal changes and suicide risk could help us recognise when a woman needs support - and potentially save a life? This week I’m joined by the brilliant Professor Pooja Saini of Liverpool John Moores University to discuss the incredible work she is doing in relation to suicide prevention, with a particular focus on suicide risk among women. We discuss perimenopause and other stages of women's lives where significant hormonal changes can occur, the impact this can have on women’s mental health, some of the warning signs to look out for, and how to confidently start a conversation if we’re concerned someone may be in crisis. We explore where women can be signposted for support and the work underway to establish a community-based women's suicide prevention service in Liverpool. We also talk in detail about suicide prevention, risk and support in both men and young people and bereavement support for children bereaved by suicide too ❤️A personal note from Sarah Nolan Losing my dad to suicide when I was 12 is something that has stayed with me throughout my life.Having this conversation was vulnerable, but it was also a reminder of why we need to keep talking. We need to make it easier for people to say they’re not okay, easier for those around us to ask questions, and easier for anyone experiencing suicidal thoughts to find the support they need. Please listen, share it with someone who may need it, and help us to continue the conversation around suicide 🙏Please remember that you don’t have to have all the answers to start a conversation. Being willing to listen is the most important first step.Support and ResourcesIf this episode brings up difficult feelings for you, or if you’re worried about someone else, please know that support is available.
