Costume design breakdown of Bewitched (2005) starring Nicole Kidman, Will Ferrell, and Shirley MacLaine — directed by Nora Ephron and costume design by Mary Zophres. We're wrapping up Freaky Witch Month with the sweetest sorceress in suburbia: Bewitched (2005)! Nicole Kidman stars as Isabel Bigelow, a real-life witch trying to live a normal life, opposite Will Ferrell's egomaniac TV actor in Nora Ephron's meta rom-com remake of the '60s classic. Costume designer Mary Zophres (La La Land, The Big Lebowski) serves up vintage-meets-Y2K whimsy with cardigans, pastel skirts, and preppy capri pants that turn Kidman into the anti–Practical Magic witch — sweet, soft, and suburban. But the real style icon is Shirley MacLaine as Iris/Endora — a walking Technicolor spell in chiffon, feathers, and finger-loop capes! She's an old-Hollywood witchcore vision draped in 20 yards of fabric and pure chaos, the kind of diva smoke show only Shirley could pull off. In this episode, we chat about: Mary Zophres's flirty, feminine, and timeless designs Nicole Kidman's demure 2000s-meets-1960s wardrobe evolution Shirley MacLaine's over-the-top "murder robes" and real-life witchy vibes Manifesting a Bewitched remake starring Pedro Pascal Segment Highlights: Mary Zophres's credits and inspo Top Looks and trivia Add to Cart: the fashion moments that made us want to shop Bonus tangents include: Marie's coven-themed birthday dinner, Blaire getting babysat by Shirley MacLaine, and a spontaneous deep dive into 2000s remakes no one asked for (but we kind of love). This week, we're diving into the gloriously gross horror of Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell (2009), the ultimate cautionary tale about ambition, where one wrong decision will get you promoted to HELL! Costume designer Isis Mussenden (The Chronicles of Narnia, American Psycho) dresses loan officer Christine (Alison Lohman) in prim pencil skirts and promotion-ready blouses along with Mrs. Ganush's witchcore chic of scarves and handkerchiefs. Plus, we talk early-2000s horror aesthetics, animatronic goats, and why Christine's downfall might just be the most stylish damnation ever put on screen. In this episode, we chat about: Isis Mussenden's inspirations and early-2000s horror palette Christine's corporate-to-cursed costume evolution Mrs. Ganush's grotesque glam and "witch weapon" styling The symbolism of that cursed button Our "Add to Cart" picks: cursed accessories edition Bonus tangents include: Marie's old life working in a bank and her own finance fashion choices (minus the curses) Charmed and Buffy — the Halliwell Sisters get their shoutout Marie's crazy purse collection and "purse of the day" ...and more! Freaky witch month continues! Smear some red lipstick and snap some twigs because we're worshipping at the altar of Gladys, Amy Madigan's instantly iconic nightmare auntie in Weapons (2025). Costume designer Trish Summerville outfits her like a 1970s thrift witch in oversized tinted glasses, plastic baubles, and the kind of chaotic color-clashing that can give you anxiety (in a good way). We unpack her intense microbangs and ritual props, praise her brooch game, and discuss why she deserves a prequel. Then, we get into conspiracy theories about her Madonna Inn-print carpet bag! We also discuss Marie's visit to the Showgirls Museum in Vegas. Tune in now! Embrace the suck! We're hexing high-schoolers this week with Beastly, a 2010s retelling of the fable Beauty and the Beast starring Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens. Costume designer Suttirat Anne Larlarb conjured up typical 2010s teen looks for the leads, but the real style star is Kendra, Mary-Kate Olsen's couture witch who curses Pettyfer's golden boy and steals the movie with her fashion goth looks. Whether it's sculptural coats, veiled top hats, or caged heels, she's giving runway occult and we're loving every minute of it. We break down every look this witch gives and also discuss the cybergoth-esque, "modern beast" makeup. Other topics include embracing Halloween consumerism culture, Marie's issue with casting hot men as monsters (see Nosferatu, Frankenstein) and the Olsen Twins' iconic Y2K style. Tune in now! Put on your side ponytail and get ready to dance, because we're rewinding to the ultimate VHS slumber party/ KTLA classic: Girls Just Want to Have Fun! This post-Footloose, pre-Dirty Dancing gem stars a baby Sarah Jessica Parker as Janey, an army brat with a dream of joining Dance TV, and Helen Hunt as her rebellious BFF Lynn — aka our surprise style ICON. Costume designer Betty Pecha Madden delivered 1980s teen movie fashion gold, from velcro tearaway tartan schoolgirl skirts and Adidas kicks to Lynn's unforgettable collection of hair accessories (stegosaurus clips, rainbow feet barrettes, raccoon hats, a grasshopper pillbox hat, and even a Cinderella rat crown). We break down all the campy, '80s looks and dive into the film's stacked cast (hello, Gina Gershon and maybe Robert Downey Jr.?!), and the underrated soundtrack. Dancin' in Heaven! This week, Marie is joined by Emmy-nominated costume designer Kameron Lennox to talk about dressing the cast of The Studio! Kameron breaks down the inspiration behind Matt's (Seth Rogen) never-repeat custom suits, Sal Saperstein's (Ike Barinholtz) sleazy-chic lapels, and the bold color palettes that distinguish each character. We also get into Patty's (Catherine O'Hara) regal Max Mara–inspired looks, Quinn's (Chase Sui Wonders) vintage-infused wardrobe (including some of Kameron's own pieces!), and of course, the wild, sartorial chaos of Kathryn Hahn's character, Maya! From sourcing fabrics in Italy to pulling a Galliano gown for Zoe Kravitz, Kameron shares how she blended present-day style with Old Hollywood glam to make the show's world feel both timeless and fashion-forward. Plus, we chat about her work on Platonic, our shared obsession with brooches, whether or not Maya would accessorize with Labubus in season 2 (had to), and more! We're in early-2000s Los Angeles with Freaky Friday! When a rebellious teen (Lindsay Lohan) and her uptight mom (Jamie Lee Curtis) swap bodies, they also swap styles—from studded belts, raglan tees, and guitar-pick chokers to a now-iconic boho patchwork Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress with knee-high suede boots. Costume designer Genevieve Tyrrell (Swingers, Go) put our favorite Pink Slip queen in studded belts, cargo pants, raglan tees, and chunky highlights, then turns up JLC's glam with that now-iconic boho patchwork DVF dress, knee-high suede boots, and a pixie cut that screams "rich mom in Laurel Canyon." We relive the era's Avril Lavigne vibes, chunky highlights, and Von Dutch sightings, plus all the LA nostalgia (RIP House of Blues). Tune in and meet us at Third Street Promenade! As if! Happy 30th anniversary to Clueless!!! To celebrate, Blaire and Marie reminisce about watching Clueless for the first time when they were youngins, and how life-changing Mona May's costumes were. Marie catches us up on all the fun facts and trivia she learned while interviewing Mona and the film's OG beauty team. Meanwhile, Blaire talks about the parallels between being an actual LA teen at the time and our favorite Bronson Pinchot High School teens. Plus, all of the fun collabs, events, and news surrounding this major milestone, their summer movie to-watch list, and more! Wagon Wheel Watusi! This week, we're shimmying into Burlesque (2010), the bedazzled fever dream of a movie musical starring Cher and Christina Aguilera. It's all rhinestones and ringmaster vibes, and we're here for every glittering second. Costume design legend Michael Kaplan (Blade Runner, Fight Club, Flashdance) found inspiration everywhere—from sherbet dessert to Magritte and Man Ray—for these stunning costumes. We break down Cher's Bob Mackie tuxedo-glam, Xtina's transformation from small-town waitress to burlesque bombshell, and that dreamy off-the-shoulder green silk gown that deserves a spot in the Green Dress Hall of Fame (move over, Atonement!). Marie swoons over surrealist hand-motif bodysuits while Blaire confesses her love for a silver chunky heel and opera gloves. We also dive into the film's Pussycat Dolls origins and why this movie feels like a chaotic cabaret dream you never want to wake up from. Plus, Marie's Lafufu update, Practical Magic 2 chismes, and more. Show us how you burlesque! "I got more legs than a bucket of chicken!" For this episode, we've got big looks, big hearts, and even BIGGER hats: To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar! It's been 30 years since this glittery road trip comedy debuted, and we're celebrating the unforgettable drag stylings brought to life by costume designer legend Marlene Stewart (Coyote Ugly, The Holiday, Madonna music videos). Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguizamo don drag as Miss Vita Boheme, Noxeema Jackson, and Chi-Chi Rodriguez—three queens (ahem, two queens and one drag princess!) on a cross-country journey filled with makeovers, marabou, and midwestern magic. We break down the trio's signature styles, discuss RuPaul's cameo moment as Rachel Tensions, and the Clueless-level volume of costume changes. We also talk about our recent obsessions, including Blaire's glass fruit ASMR and Marie's bald Lafufu. [SCREAMS] Tune in now! We're baaaaack! After a mini-hiatus, we're kicking things off with some brain candy: Another Simple Favor! The sequel to A Simple Favor has everything we love: mystery, murder, and a wardrobe so extra you could watch the movie on mute and still be entertained. Blake Lively returns as Emily, serving high camp, insane hats, oversized tailoring, and looks that scream Murder Mommy Mob Wife, all courtesy of costume designer Renée Ehrlich Kalfus (A Simple Favor, Hidden Figures, Friends With Benefits). Anna Kendrick's Stephanie may have a few cute 'fits, but let's be real: this is ol' blondie's runway. We break down the couture-level costumes, discuss how Blake's real-life stylist-free choices influence her character's wardrobe, and compare it all to the chaotic looks in It Ends With Us (double pants trigger warning). You won't find any litig**tion speak here, but you WILL find us spiraling into tangents on Marie's totally healthy Babygirl obsession, our new segment (?) "Dakota Unchained," Party Girl's 30th anniversary, and even a little Seth Rogen love. It's unhinged, it's fabulous, it's Makeover Montage. Bottoms week continues! In this long-lost episode from the Makeover Montage vault, Marie sits down with the film's makeup artist Natalie Johnson for a deep dive into the bold, hilarious, and blood-soaked aesthetic of the breakout teen comedy. Natalie shares how '90s teen classics like Bring It On, Jawbreaker, Never Been Kissed, and She's All That inspired the film's hyper-stylized yet realistic high school looks, and how Fight Club served as a makeup reference for those epic fight scenes. From skincare prep to bruising techniques, Natalie gives us a behind-the-scenes look at crafting both beauty and carnage on set. Plus, she opens up about her journey from MAC Cosmetics to movie sets, her love for horror, and why collaboration with actors like Rachel Sennott and Havana Rose Liu made Bottoms such a treat! "Could the ugly, untalented gays please report to the principal's office?" It's PRIDE MONTH and we're celebrating with a chaotic queer cult-classic in the making: Bottoms! Marie is joined by writer and friend of the pod Krista Burton to dive into this hilariously h**ny, gloriously campy lesbian fight club film that stars Ayo Edebiri and Rachel Sennott. Costume designer Eunice Jera Lee loaded the film with fun throwbacks and brilliant references to The Craft, Clueless, and Ferris Bueller. We break down PJ's suspender-core crisis, best-friend necklaces, and Chanel-coded revenge 'fits, while discussing our mutual Ruby Cruz thirst, Kristen Stewart stanning, and more. Tune in now! Imagine if your too-good-to-be-true boo was actually an android?! In this episode, Marie talks to Companion costume designer Vanessa Porter about her work on the sci-fi rom-com thriller, which stars Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid as a couple on a getaway with friends at a remote cabin—until hell breaks loose when one of the guests is revealed to be a companion robot! Vanessa breaks down how Iris's (Sophie Thatcher) French New Wave-inspired wardrobe of pastel cardigans, gingham rompers, and Reformation-worthy sundresses isn't just style goals, it's a commentary on control, fantasy, and good ol' toxic masculinity. They also discuss how dressing a character who doesn't pick her own outfits flips the script on traditional costuming, and how each carefully coordinated look reflects her creator's fantasy more than Iris herself. Plus: the cult-favorite necklace Marie's adding to cart, which classic brand is a Tradwife staple, and how to design a Stepford Wifey outfit with just the right amount of blood splatter. Tune in now! It's time to party like it's 1999! For this special NYE bonus episode, we're thrilled to welcome costume designer Katina Danabassis to the pod to discuss her work in the new A24 horror-comedy Y2K! Katina takes us on a nostalgic journey back to the turn of the millennium, where cyber-optimism and late 90s/2000s style ruled. From the shiny, chrome-infused looks to the iconic brands that defined the era (Abercrombie! Tommy Hilfiger!), Katina's costumes for Y2K perfectly capture the essence of this moment in time. She tells us how she meticulously sourced vintage pieces, collaborated with the cast, and infused personal touches to make the fashion in Y2K feel authentic. She also tells us about designing the costumes in Bodies, Bodies, Bodies and Past Lives, what it's like working with Zendaya, and why "Go" is such an important movie. Whether you're a former JNCO-wearing raver, a nu-metal freak, or simply someone who loves a heavy dose of 90s/2000s nostalgia, this episode is a must for your ears! Follow Katina on Instagram! Drum roll, please! For our final installment of our annual Dunstcember programming, we're (finally) diving into Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind! Directed by the brill Charlie Kaufman, this mind-bending movie explores the idea of erasing memories of a failed relationship. Kate Winslet SHINES as the quirky and chaotic Clementine, with her ever-changing hair colors and eclectic vintage-inspired wardrobe. Costume designer Melissa Toth did an amazing job capturing Clementine's effortless, thrifted cool-girl aesthetic, right down to that signature orange hoodie. The film is STACKED with familiar and favorite faces, from preciouso Elijah Wood to cutie Mark Ruffalo—and Jim Carrey is so depression-hot in this one. While our beloved Kiki Dunst isn't the lead, she is a major part of the plot. This film is a true cinematic masterpiece, with its nonlinear storytelling, beautiful cinematography, and surreal dream sequences. We break down all the best fashion moments, from Clementine's cozy winter looks to her shocking skeleton jumpsuit. Other CHAT topics: Clementine as the anti-manic pixie dream girl, the enduring love for "'90s Cool Girl Style," our history of all the menz we've loved on this podcast in the past six years, including problematics. Our dear Makeover Mavens...(lol), we're deep in Dunstcember, and this week, Blaire is bringing her true crime pick: All Good Things. Those of you who watched The Jinx and followed the weird story of New York real estate heir and convicted murderer Robert Durst may be familiar with this film. It is "loosely based" on Durst and stars our sweet Kirsten Dunst and our beloved Ryan Gosling! There are a lot of '70s looks in this, which Kirsten can pull off like no other. Costumes were designed by the legendary Michael Clancy who did our fave film Party Girl! We discuss Sarah Michell Gellar's recent week in media and learn the origin of Blaire's motto, uttered by Kristen Wiig in this film, "Eat your salad." Dunstcember Week 2 is here, so get ready to dive into the dark, dreamy world of The Virgin Suicides with your favorite costume design-loving mistresses! This week, we're exploring Sofia Coppola's stunning directorial debut, a movie that has become a cult classic and a major influence on fashion and pop culture. From the Lisbon sisters' Gunne Sax prom dresses to Lux's iconic 'Trip' underwear moment, the costumes in this film are straight-up legendary! Costume designer Nancy Steiner created looks that are both repressed and aspirational; this film has inspired everyone from Rodarte to Marc Jacobs and our dear Rookie Magazine! (Shoutout Tavi)! DUNSTCEMBER HAS ARRIVED! We're kicking things off with one of the lower-tier (said lovingly) Shakespeare-inspired teen comedies: Get Over It! Not to be confused with A Midsummer Night's Rave...this loosely-based, A Midsummer Night's Dream adaptation stars Ben Foster as a high school senior trying to win back his ex-girlfriend by joining the school play. The film is stacked with more familiar faces like Sisqo, Mila Kunis, Shane West, and Martin Short (who is basically playing a young version of Oliver from Only Murders?!). Costume designer Mary Jane Fort, who also did Mean Girls and Bring It On, put Kirsten Dunst and co. in platform flip flops and graphic tanks galore. Vitamin C also makes an appearance. We're diving into the 1992 film Batman Returns, which is over-the-top and comic book-y in the best way that only director Tim Burton could do. Costume designers Bob Ringwood and Mary E. Vogt teamed up for this one, with Vogt overseeing Catwoman's iconic look. We discuss Selina Kyle's (Michelle Pfeiffer) transformation from bookish executive assistant to her DIY latex suit and the other wild costumes in the film. Other topics include Michael Keaton's hotness, Marie watching True Blood for the first time, and...we're gearing up for Dunstcember!
