Description

Welcome to Through the Ruth - where we explore life inside the walls we call home, and the lives we build around them.

I'm Ruth Mathews - Professional Property Manager, storyteller, and lover of all things home.

Each week, we'll open the door to real stories, design inspiration, and practical tips for shifting house, creating calm spaces, and keeping your home safe, secure, and beautifully comfortable.   Interviewing tenants, landlords and fellow professionals in the industry on what home life is like for them, the lessons learnt and words of wisdom shared from their experiences, including living in a haunted house, co-sharing and finally living on your own when the kids fly the coup.

Because whether you own, rent or simply dream - everyone deserves to feel at home.

So, make yourself at home...you're listening to Through the Ruth.

This episode focuses on the topics we sometimes have to have, but are also the hardest to have.  The topics where you might need to let the owner know the rent will be late this week, or where an owner might need to increase the rent, or perhaps you need to chase up reported maintenance or have to let the tenant know there is going to be a delay caused by tradespeople.  You see, the relationship between an owner and a tenant, even when through a professional, can be hard to have.  As humans, we tend to want to put off the hard topics, but delaying them can make it even harder. Being a tenant isn't easy AND being a Landlord isn't easy. Only with clear communication and putting 'cards on the table' can we give clarity, transparency and respect which builds trust.  A hard conversation is rarely because of spite or anger.  I hope to open the channels of communication to avoid disrespect or elongation of a hard topic, showing you that it can be done easier for both parties.  Thank you for joining me for another episode, and apologies it is a little late this week! Warm regards,  Ruth
What happens when communication becomes non-existent? There is no communication, literally. And when there is no communication, both sides assume the worst of the other.  So what can be done to avoid this from happening in the first place? it all starts with listening to the other in order for us to have an understanding of what's going on.  With understanding comes respect.  This is the pillar of stability for both sides.  A good Property Manager will encourage and maintain communication with both sides to ensure longevity and stability on both sides.  Thanks for listening to another episode of 'Through the Ruth'
We all have that one room we avoid.  Usually only opening when we desperately need something we threw in there long ago, or to add to its pile. It might be a room, or for some it might be that kitchen table starting to pile up.  For me, its both the main bedroom and the linen press.  Both are never where I wish they would be in organisation and even cleanliness.  So is everyone to the same? What if those spaces were saying something about us rather than the items actually in there.  Be sure to follow and subscribe, and thank you for joining me for another episode of 'Through The Ruth'
Have you ever made judgement on someone the moment you rocked up to their house? What do you think of a home with 6 cars on the lawn compared to the neighbouring home that has a precision cut English Garden? In this episode, we dig a little deeper not only on our own judgements made, but what people might think of our own Front Yard.  A friendly little reminder to get out there and do something.  Make one little change.  Effort doesn't have to mean cost, just time.  And getting outside might be just the thing you need.  So grab yourself a fresh brew and sit down for another episode of Through The Ruth.  Ruth xoxo
Join me for another episode of Through The Ruth, where today I share my secrets to my personal journey of getting healthy again.   This one is a little different than past episodes to date as I want to expand your thoughts not beyond the walls we call home, but to take you deep inside.... Inside our Bodies!   Feeling 'At Home' within the body we are given, and how can we make the vessel that homes our minds as best as it can be. We think of a spring clean or New Yrs Resolution as our surroundings, but what about the home we were given minds to reside in our whole life, and how can we make just little changes to get the ball rolling towards big change if we are not happy with it?   Hope you like this episode, feel free to let me know what topics you want covered in future episodes too!   Ruth.
When you make your home environment exactly what you need it to be, you are never alone.  In this episode, we cover How to stay grounded, creating an environment for right now, identifying what is important to you, and hit repeat.  Whether you own or rent, you have a right to settle in and make your home what you need it to be - especially as a tenant.  You don't need to live like everything lacks permanency.  There are 'rent friendly' ideas you can use to create your home that you need.  So put on the kettle, and join us for another episode to help you enjoy the life your living by getting to the heart of home!
Ever wondered what it would be like being in the industry of homes for 40 odd years? Imagine the changes that have happened both in prices of homes let alone the technology.  Well Di has done just that.  Not only has she seen it all, she shares with us a few of her hopes for the future, a memory or two, and recommendations to anyone looking at Property Management as a career - it's not as easy as some people think, and we have a lot of legislation in place to ensure it is done right.  Take a listen to a hilarious example of when the unexpected happens and why she rocked up back at the office with dirt on her face and crumpled paperwork! If you have any topic to do with HOME you want me to cover, send me an email: ruth@thepmboutique.com.au and I hope you enjoy not only this episode but some amazing topics to come that will assist with ways to make your house the best home you need.
Thank you for joining me for another episode of Through the Ruth.  Todays episode we discuss the Cost of Living and how it affects the home.  If I've learnt one thing, it's that there is never a 'perfect time' where we finally allow ourselves to be happy. It becomes a choice.  I hope this episode has you thinking of what is important to keep and what can simply be let go, so the pressure can be minimised and shared within the home to reduce the stress we live with during these times.  Don't forget to follow and join me again for another episode of Through the Ruth.
In this episode we have another special guest speaker, Michael Kennedy, who won the prestigious South Australian Award 'Property Manager of the Year 2023'. We will hear what is is like working in the industry, what to know before you consider this career, and what others outside can learn like listening through the proverbial door rather than having to be inside. We cover what changes have happened, what are the most important values to know, and hopefully gain some understanding of the 'other side' when searching for a rental yourself. Dont forget to follow along and enjoy learning what others call 'HOME'.
Its not that unusual to move around the corner, to the next suburb, maybe even over to the next town.  Bigger still, you may move Interstate OR what about to another COUNTRY!!?  In this episode, we get to hear from a man by the name of Rick who has done exactly that.  We don't often stop and think what is involved with moving a long way away, let alone what makes them stay and what is involved with making the decision on the first place. Hopefully listening to this episode, you will grow with understanding of one story that was a jump for the heart and ended up being amazing for the mind as we hear about the journey for Rick coming to Australia and feeling right at home. Dont forget to click follow and hear stories of the journey to find home.
In this episode, we discuss home safety.  Renting or Owning, our home is still our safe place in the world where we should feel most relaxed.  Unfortunately break ins occur as do Home Invasions.   What should you do if it happens to you. What WOULD you do if it happens to you.  The conversation is better to happen before, not after, and this episode is to help you bring it up for discussion with your household. Dont forget to follow, and thank you for joining me for another episode.  Ruth.
In this episode of Through the Ruth, we explore the importance of Grandparents inside a home. Whilst not everyone is fortunate to have good Grandparents, or the may now have wings, but the cultural significance of Grandparents alone is important in shaping our past, presence and our future for everyone inside the family.  A home without the people is just a house.  An extended home with more people can be a new world of possibilities.  In this episode, we will hear how they shape us, the memories we keep, and even how they physically can increase our enjoyment of life.  So please grab a cuppa and take a comfy seat, your listening to through the Ruth, the podcast that's all about HOME.
Welcome to episode five, where we explore the idea of showing GRATTITUDE for what we have and where we stand in the community.  Home is not just 4 walls we hide within, it's as equally the community we live amongst.  Being part of a community is not simply living within a zone but contributing to assist others and how we can help.   Being truly 'at home' also depends on how important our present is within a community, or several communities depending on your interests and what you are able to assist others with in order to gain yourself.  I hope you enjoy this episode of meandering thoughts, and the growing on line community of Through the Ruth.
Welcome to Through the Ruth. In this episode, we hear the story about a tenant who unfortunately experienced what we all fear.  They came home to an open front door and discovered they were broken into.  We hear how this was handled, what happened following this night, but also how kindness and empathy can change the entire negative experience into a positive outcome.  Afterall, HOME is mean to be our security away from the world and worth protecting! I hope you will join me, and don't forget to follow along.  Thank you for joining Through the Ruth
In this episode we explore ideas to plan ahead for the big move, how to give yourself the best chance for a bond refund and ways to not blow a fuse during the whole process.  How can we move successfully, keeping it enjoyable and HOW do you plan for this, especially if you have kids or pets! Moving can be a fun experience, and exiting new start, and a little bit of scary all mixed into one.  I hope you enjoy this episode and it assists your next big change of moving house.  Thank you as always for listening!
Welcome to the Second Episode of Through The Ruth. In this episode, we explore a few stories of People and their pets! Pets are such a wonderful addition to our family and literally make a house a home.  Hope you enjoy an inside view to the joy of being greeted at the door by a pet.
Home means such different things to different people. Its understanding these differences that helps us work out what that meaning is to us.  For some it has more to do with the people inside it than the structure itself.  To others it's the structure than means everything, especially with shortage of rentals or from a divorce.  We delve a little into all aspects presenting fruit of future episodes.  Thank you for joining Through the Roof as we embark on our first episode.
