Description
Karate is for everyone. So, join us each week for a 20 to 25 minute conversation on all types of subjects. We go from managing the distractions of daily life, through martial arts history and people, and common sense concepts to add to your self defense armor. Plus we have interviews and so much more. After spending over 40 years discussing life's challenges in a dojo, (both as a student and as a teacher) I decided it would be fun to share the conversations with everyone. And it is! We're having a great time with our guests each week thinking, talking and very importantly sharing a laugh or two along the way.

I love when the conversation is so full, it takes two episodes. We start by continuing Sensei Liam's challenge of picking if his example is one of strength or power. Remember to let me know, so I can let him know, if you liked the game and if you agree or disagree with our opinions. In this episode, where we talked a lot about internal growth, we also referenced a number of old episodes. Let's start the tags with a recent episode. Sensei Tracey brought up a book that talks about how to ...
Sensei Liam is back. He brought the subject of Strength and Power with him. We enjoyed it so much, we've added Part 2 for next week. Today's show focuses on the external applications. But, as usual, we're all over the map. One thing we do is refer to a couple of the other times Sensei Liam joined us. He was on in 2021 talking about the relationship between Obligation and Opportunity. Here it is in case you missed it: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/9763317 One of my favorite episod...
I'm starting these notes with a shout out to Joy for introducing me to today's guest - Mike Andrus. We had so much fun learning about his journey, his Security Company - Safe Day Services, and his style - Systems of Combative Arts. Often, when talking to Martial Artists, the subject of self-control comes up. Of course, we did an episode on that. In fact it was one of our first episodes. ! Here's a link: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/1815622 Mr. Andrus and I both have ...
This episode first aired in 2020. In fact it was our 19th episode! (This is our 330th:) Most of the things we mentioned in this episode we have subsequently discussed. Here are a few. When we talked about Judo, we mentioned women in training back at the beginning of the 1900s. (The memory of that episode makes me smile.) Here's a link: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/5247724 We mentioned (and how could you not!) Mas Oyama. Here's the epiosde we reorded on him: https://www.buzzsprou...
A few weeks ago, after recording the Fear episode with Hanshi, we got to talking about his time as a Paratrooper. Unfortunately, I had turned off the recorder. But fortunately, we realized we needed to invite him back to share the stories. I'm tagging in his first interview. (We met in 2021 and he's been a regular on the show ever since. Thank you so much Hanshi!) Here's his first interview: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/8625686 Thanks for listening today and thanks f...
Sensei Jay joins us today to do a little history and a few personal stories on these terms: Obi, Out of the Line of Fire and One Knuckle Punch. Sensei Jay has been on the show quite a few times. One of his first visits is an episode called A Real Fight, A Real Mess. Here it is if you'd like to listen: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/3293584 During our discussions on the belt system, we mention Judo and the founder. Here's a link where we talk about Jigoro Kano: https://www.bu...
So much going on in today's episode. Let's start with the fact that I'm using opening drumming furnished by the Fushi Daiko Drummers of South Florida. We interviewed the founder, Ben, and here's a link: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/15446850 We touched on alot of old episodes discussing the amazing Sister Linda Sim. One of them, an odd connection, was our show on Audie Murphy. Here's that link: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/14969721 We also touched on aging. Here's o...
So much to say here....Let's start with the fact that I'm quoting our guest Hanshi TD McKinnon in the title. Thank you Hanshi. Now I'll include a caveat. When we do episodes like this, we're not claiming to have 'the answer' for anyone. We're just old-timers talking about karate concepts. Therefore, if you have great ideas on how you deal with anything we talk about - Please Share with us!! Hanshi McKinnon has been on the show many times. Here are a few: We met Hanshi back in 2021. Here...
Is it possible to spend 20 minutes talking about a 4 letter word and have fun? It is if you're as crazy as we are and the word is Can't. Listen and tell us your stories. Sensei Jay joined us today. At one point, the conversation turned to his dad. Back in 2021, Sensei Jay told us a lot about his dad's military experience. Here's the link: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/8329162 As always we thank you for your support and urge you to go one step surther and click the link with...
Yes, talking about a unique and poisonous garden in the UK. Did you all hear our episodes on poisons from 2022? Here's a link: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/10340583 That link does double duty. Yes, it's about poisons, but it is also one of the other times Sensei Lydia joined in the conversation! Enjoy. We also mention the Yew tree. Both Sensei Jackie and I think it came up in one of our Archery episodes. (We did 3). Here they are. Let us know if we're right and the Yew bark is u...
I want to start by mentioning that Master Hess has books for you to buy. An easy search brought them up in both Amazon and Thriftbooks under Joseph C. Hess. In Master Kelljchian's 365 Days of the Warrior book, he has a quote from Master Hess and today we discuss it. Speaking of Master Hess, we did an entire episode on Master Hess. Here's the link: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/12516431 Another thought that comes up in this episode and in both fights and arguments is E...
We' were so lucky to be joined by Shelby today to discuss this great Zen concept. We had a blast and hopefully you will too. Shelby has been on a few times. I think her first appearance may have been when we were celebrating our 25th episode! Here's the link: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/3383908 Thanks Shelby. Zen philosophy is behind the viewpoint we're tackling today. We've talked about it many times on the podcast. Here's one episode, from a couple of years ago: https:/...
Last week we started this discussion on Self-Defense books. This week we add a third book to the mix. It's called The Gift of Fear. Sensei Tracey joins us again as we get deeper into the subject. We have discussed self-defense before on the program. Check out last weeks episode notes for more. This week I decided to tag an episode on Female warriors. Sensei Tracey was in that one also, and Sensei Sherry was there too! Here it is: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/8153789 ...
Sensei Tracey joins us today to discuss 3 different Self-defense books. Mine, Master Kelljchian's and a man named Gavin de Becker who wrote a book called The Gift of Fear. Sensei Tracey has been on so many times. One that I love was back in 2021 when we talked about the Tanto (the knife). https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/8061673 Also, we have done so many episodes on reality defense. I chose this one to tag in. It is from 2019. Glenda joined us and we had fun. Here's the link:...
Well we've run into both medical and technical difficulties this last few weeks. Don't worry, no one is on the verge of death. Everyone is ok. When life interrupted the flow of our work, we dug in and decided to listen to this old episode. It made us smile and we hope it makes you smile too. Stay tuned till the end for a bonus giggles (or groans). Laughter always helps. Since this episode aired we did, in fact, do episodes on the sayings of Master Brown and Master Lasorsa. Here's ...
Yay! It's time to revisit our great guests, stories and plenty of mistakes from the past 6 months. I'll tag as many episodes as I can below. Did you hear our 2 episodes with the voice of the podcast (Sensei Jay)? Here's the one we did on Camouflage: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/17972128 And here is the one where we talked about WW1 planes. Boy did we laugh: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/17625084 I say in the episode that I'll try to include this episode on the...
Welcome to December 2025 and an episode from 2021. This episode is packed with stories about breaking (tamishawara). Remember that back in 2021, when this was recorded Sensei Landyn was a kid. In the years between then and now Sensei Landyn has done many breaks including the required one with the nunchaku mention in this episode. We also mention quite a few episodes, including one on Kimi (focus). Here's the link: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/8501411 After this episode ori...
Sensei Lydia and Sensei Randy joined us to have a fantastic afternoon of movie watching and the riotous discussion that followed. We hope you enjoy it. A big thank you to Sifu Michael Ng for the recommendation. We've done lots of movies, but I feel good about tagging this one because we do mention it in the episode. Jic you missed it: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/17516251 And while I'm tagging. How about I tag the first movie we reviewed. It's called Budo. Listen here: htt...
A few episodes back we actually aired our 312th episode (6 years). Wow! Thanks for coming along for the ride. Sensei Jackie and Sensei Landyn (remember - he was 12 when we started!) were talking about it and decided to push record while we talked. This is the result. We talked about so many things, our great guests (thanks guys), new friends (we're so lucky), and keeping in touch with old friends (again - it brings a smile to my face). Then the discussion turned to episodes. I couldn't fit al...
Today Sensei Jackie and I are lucky to meet Sifu Rod Dalby from England. We mention that our introduction to Rod was through our friendship with Sifu Rob. Here's our first (of many) conversations with Sifu Rob Jones: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/8931796 And somehow we manage to talk about the old tv show Kung Fu Of course, we did an episode on it. Here's that one: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/7903534 We had a blast recording and hope you enjoy hearing about Sifu Ro...
