Legend says the True Cross grew too heavy for an emperor to carry — until he traded his crown for bare feet. This feast remembers Emperor Heraclius's return of the recovered True Cross to Jerusalem in the 600s. Tradition holds that the Cross wouldn't budge, and the city gate wouldn't open, until Heraclius set aside his royal robes and crown and carried it in simple humility instead — a reminder of why the Church still lifts up the Cross every year. St. John Chrysostom, the "golden-mouthed" preacher, was exiled by an empress for telling the truth — and died still praising God. As archbishop of Constantinople, John's preaching demanded that wealthy Christians actually care for the poor outside their own church doors, which won him ordinary crowds and powerful enemies alike. Exiled for criticizing the empress, he died on the road in 407, his last words full of peace rather than bitterness. "Glory be to God for all things."
