Settle in, open your heart, and let's spend some time together in God's Word. TODAY'S DEVOTION: The law will turn you in on yourself if you're looking for it to save you. The law misapplied will cause you to keep your focus on you—either how well you are doing, or how miserably you are failing. The focus is the same. In the end, it's all you. Paul knew all about the law. He was an expert in the law. But what Paul discovered was the Gospel. And the Gospel turns our eyes off of ourselves, redirecting our focus on to Jesus—not what we have done or haven't done, but on Jesus, what He has done and what we have become in Him. Not I, but Christ, says Paul. Because that's what the Gospel does. It turns us outward to God, into the world as the new creatures that we are. Paul says, "I am crucified with Christ, and the life I now live, I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me." Paul has discovered that his real life is in Christ, not in obedience to the law. And this was his message. And he would not let anyone distort or change that message—not even Peter. So when Peter began to insist on Gentiles obeying the law of circumcision, he rebuked him publicly. Where are you looking? Inward, onto yourself? Are you looking to your own piety to get you in the good graces of God? Or are you looking outward, away from yourself and onto Jesus—the One who loves you and who is with you, the One who has made you and reclaimed you? Look to Him. Keep your eyes focused on Him, and don't let the law or anyone move your gaze anywhere else. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: It was a night to remember. A horrific night. Judgment struck the firstborn of Egypt, but not for everyone. For those who put the blood of a spotless lamb over their doorposts, death would pass by. For those who were covered by the Lamb, for them there was life. John alludes to this in the first chapter of his Gospel. He says, look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. And Paul later on says in First Corinthians 5, Christ is our Passover lamb who has been sacrificed for us. And later on in his second Epistle to the Corinthians, he says this in chapter five, God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, not counting their sins against them. Over and over again through the Scriptures, we see that the Lamb came to cover everyone. We see God's reconciling work by the shedding of his blood for all. And with that sacrifice, Jesus has won our victory. He's won our peace with God. This is a day to be remembered. It's all pointing to the cross, to the life, the death, the resurrection, the ascension of Jesus. It's the beginning of days where life begins. It's the Gospel. The Israelites were told to eat this Passover meal with a staff in their hand. When God rescues us and frees us from our bondage to slavery and sin through his death, he does that fully intending that we start walking with him, participating with him in this new life that he has for us right here, right now, the advancing of his work right here, right now. Part of what this new life has purchased for us is the ability to walk with him. The Israelites had to go through the Red Sea, through the wilderness and into the land of Canaan. And we, like them, have been invited to go on a life changing walk with him. This walk of life takes us into the land of promise and blessing. And it's not just out there, it's right here today, as you're listening to this podcast. You're listening as a free woman, a free man, somebody who has been delivered by the spotless lamb of God. He has wrapped you up and included you in his community, a community that is on a walk with him into a new day, a day that's free. Free from the slavery that you once lived under. You are no longer a slave. No. You are his child. You are a citizen. You are a part of the community. You've been drawn in. You've been made his. This redemption, this salvation that you have experienced is for today. And today you can begin to live in the joy and the wisdom, the strength and the confidence of it. Today you can confidently grow into the person that you really are. Not a slave, but a loved child of God. That is what you are. And the prayer of my own heart today is that I will begin to live more confidently in that reality. And that's a prayer that I have for my family too, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. Let's open our hearts to God's word and remember: you are loved, no doubt about it. TODAY'S DEVOTION: TODAY'S DEVOTION: Jesus meets these two men on the way to a little town outside of Jerusalem. It's a seven-mile walk and the town is called Emmaus. Their hearts are dejected, their hopes and aspirations dashed. They're broken. Having followed Jesus through his ministry, they had hoped that he was the Messiah. They had seen many of his miraculous signs and they were overcome by his amazing teaching and thought, "This could be it. This might be the man." Yet three days prior, they had seen that man that they had pinned all their hopes on crucified. Now the story that they hoped for had come to an end. So they thought. But it's here, at this moment, when their hearts are at their darkest and their hopes are most broken, that Jesus shows up. He's veiled to them, but eventually he's going to unveil Himself and show them who He really is. At this point, veiled Jesus reminds them of some things they should have known, things they should have seen. Luke writes that Jesus says to them, "You foolish people, you find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures. Wasn't it clearly predicted that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before he entered his glory?" And then, this stranger on the road begins to take them through the writings of Moses and the prophets, and he explains from the Scriptures what they should have been able to see. There are things that we should be able to see that Jesus can reveal to us. Luke says he took them through the Scriptures concerning himself. He explains who the Messiah is. He is offering them a way—a way of seeing, seeing things that they should have been able to see, things about God, things about themselves, things about love. He is showing them that He is the way that we begin to regain our sight: to see what is true about ourselves, about God, about the world, about what is true. We are on a journey. These two are on a journey to Emmaus, and they're trying to talk their way clear on this profound disappointment in their life. They're disappointed with what they believe to be true. They're disappointed that God didn't somehow change the circumstances, that Jesus didn't meet their expectations. They're disappointed with the world and the way it is. They're disappointed with themselves. No doubt they had hope for something and they thought that that hope had let them down. Maybe you are on your own journey to Emmaus, or maybe you know what that's like. Maybe you are disappointed—disappointed that God didn't come through the way you thought he would, that things haven't worked out. Maybe you're disappointed with yourself. Maybe you had hopes that didn't pan out. Maybe today we can pay close attention and see the way that Jesus is inviting us to see. Maybe today we can pay close attention to the presence of God with us. He might be unrecognizable at first, but maybe we can pay special attention and listen to Him. If we do, He will often open up the Scriptures to help us to see things that we should have seen all along. Maybe He will reveal Himself in the breaking of bread, and you'll see that He has been with you through it all—even the disappointments, the hopes unrealized. Maybe if we keep listening and walking, we'll discover His way of seeing: seeing the world, seeing ourselves, seeing our neighbors, seeing all things through love. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: All hell was breaking loose. And Luke tells us that the people rested. The horrors of this day, the day of Christ's suffering, are culminating in a moment of rest. The women from Galilee who had witnessed Jesus' body being taken down from the cross went home on that horrific day thinking they still had work to do. We're told in verse 56 that they went home and prepared spices and ointments to anoint his body. But by the time they were finished, the Sabbath had begun. So they rested from their work. Even after all of these horrors, they thought that there was still work to be done. What they did not know was that Jesus, on this Good Friday, had completed all the work necessary. So now theirs was to rest. Now the Sabbath had really come. Jesus finished the work so that the girls could rest. He finished the work so that you and I could find rest. On that Friday, Jesus went to work for bystanders and mocking soldiers. He went to work for reluctant Pilate and indulged Herod. He went to work for guilty Barabbas and Simon the Cyrene. Jesus went to work for sign makers, cross builders, common criminals, gamblers, good and righteous men like Joseph of Arimathea, and heartbroken women who are forced to watch at a distance. Jesus was finishing his work on that Friday so that we all could find rest. Jesus was giving his everything. He was working hard. He did for us what we could not do for ourselves. He has done the work—the work of redeeming, rescuing, forgiving the sins of the world. He forgave us because we did not know what we were doing. That's why he came to us. Because we don't know. We're trapped and blinded, unable to save ourselves. We don't know what we're doing. Jesus said so himself on the cross, "Father, forgive them. They don't know what they are doing." Athanasius says, what then was God to do when he saw humanity spiraling into non-being? What was God to do because they didn't know? He would send his Son. Our Lord Jesus would come to rescue us so that at last our eyes would be opened and we would be awakened to life and rest in him. That rest belongs to you. It belongs to all of humanity. He made it free out of the abundance of his heart of love. He did that work. There's nothing left for me to do other than to step in, to say yes, to receive freely the rest that there is in him. And that's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: No other witnesses are needed. As we journey with Jesus in Luke 22, we witness the fulfillment of every promise and prediction he has ever made. The disciples gather in the upper room, just as he said they would. He is betrayed, denied, deserted—just as he said he would be. The smallest details of his story unfold exactly according to his plan and his words. His accusers even confirm it themselves, declaring, "Why do we need any more witnesses?" Everything he spoke has proven to be true. The power and certainty in Jesus' words invite us to awaken, to have our eyes opened to the living Christ before us. What do we believe? Do we believe all this is happening according to his plan? Do we believe that, just as he knew the path before him, he knows the path before us—the fears, the corners we feel backed into, the failures and weakness we carry? He knows. And he comes to sit with us in those dark corners. He seeks out the exact places we feel stuck and forgotten. These are the people he came to rescue, forgive, die for, and live for. Ours is not to offer witness, but to receive—receive his presence, his table, his forgiveness. And when we are strengthened by his love and grace, ours is to serve others and extend that same grace. All that has happened—his life, his death, his resurrection—is for us. Just as he was faithful to fulfill his promises and show his true identity as the Son of God, he is faithful to us today. Let us trust and believe. Let us sit at his table. Let us be strengthened and serve. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, and my daughters, and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. Has anyone ever spoken words of blessing and life on behalf of God over your life? Has anyone ever spoken over you about God's design for you, his purposes yet to be fulfilled by him in you? Has anyone ever blessed you? You, me—we are made for that kind of blessing. You were created to be blessed. Our destiny is somehow wrapped up in this thing called blessing. When words of blessing fail to reach our ears or our life, there are hard consequences. We are restless until we find that blessing from God, that blessing that you were made for. Many of you may be able to say that you have received those kinds of words. You have been blessed in this way. People have spoken words on behalf of God over you. They have recognized what God is doing in your life, how he has made you so uniquely, what he has called and created you for. And those words have made all the difference. But I'd guess that many, if not most of you, have not heard or received those words of blessing. You need to know that you were made for it, that God wants you to hear those words of life spoken over you by him. He wants you to know how uniquely you have been made, how important you are, that you matter, that you have a purpose. That he loves you and desires to bless you. He wants you to know it. Two of the three servants described in this parable saw it. They saw a gift. They saw an opportunity. They were chosen by the king to steward his riches. They had no riches of their own. They had the opportunity to be made wealthy by someone else's wealth. They would be honored by the king, and that honor would be multiplied simply by investing money that wasn't even theirs, simply by participating in the gifts that were given to them by the king. They harvested riches where they did not plant. They were given cities that they had no hand in building. That is the kind of king that we serve. He is a generous and loving king. So much so that he blesses us with things that we haven't earned and don't deserve. He has chosen us to invest his riches, and then he multiplies our honor even beyond that. What a generous, kind, loving king he is. Two of the three servants saw it. One servant of the king got it all wrong. His response to the generous king was, "Master, I hid your money and I kept it safe. I was afraid because you're a hard man to deal with, taking things that aren't yours, harvesting crops that you don't plant." This guy is deceived about who the master is—what the master's heart is truly like—and who he himself is. He has forgotten that he is a servant and that he has a responsibility to that king. That's his role. That's who he is. He has forgotten his identity. Apart from the king, he has no riches and he's forgotten this and missed the loving, generous heart of the king. Our King wants to reward, honor, and multiply his blessings upon us. May we invest our loving king's riches because we have seen his heart, because we've been reminded of who we are. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. And that's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. That's a popular sentiment these days. It's used in sports, in business; it's found on t-shirts and bumper stickers. Giving up is easy. I've done it way too much in my life. I've given up on goals, I've given up on hopes, I've given up on relationships. I'm sad to say that I've given up on way too much that I needed to hold on to in this life. And I've also held on to things I should have given up long ago—resentments, anger, my need to be right, my need for approval. I've held on to these things way too long. Maybe you can relate. It seems like the trick is to give up on the wrong things and never give up on the right things. In Luke 18, Jesus says that we should keep praying and never give up. Prayer seems to be connected to our ability to hold on to the right things. Prayer is a two-way conversation; it's relational. We share our hearts, our fears, our failures, our life with Him. And He shares His life, His word, His heart, His hopes for us. It's a two-way thing. God is speaking to us in prayer, and we are listening to His voice and His leading. We hear from Him, we respond, and we worship Him. Without this relationship, giving up is inevitable. It's just way too easy. But when we pray, we are given the strength to hold on, to endure, to never give up. In today's reading, we hear Jacob listening to God speak to him, late at night, in a place called Beersheba. The last time God spoke to Jacob in Beersheba was many years ago, when he was preparing to leave home, fleeing from his brother. He laid his head on a rock and saw a stairway to heaven with the Lord at the top, and God promised him the land and descendants as numerous as the dust of the earth. Now, years later, God comes to him once again, and again Jacob is having to leave the land God had promised to him. It didn't look like the promise would be fulfilled anytime soon—Jacob was headed in the opposite direction, would even die in a different land without seeing the promise fulfilled. But out in the distance, too far for Jacob to see, God was bringing about the fulfillment of all He had promised. Jacob needed to keep on praying and never give up. God told him that Joseph, his son, would be with him to the end. For us, someone even greater than Joseph is with us—not Jacob's son but God's Son, who will be with us to the very end. Hebrews 11:13 reminds us that all these people died still believing what God had promised them. They did not receive what was promised, but they saw it all from a distance and welcomed it. So keep praying. Never give up. God is faithful. If we live a life of faith, a life of prayer, a life in relationship with Him, then we will have the strength we need to never give up. He who promised is faithful; He will fulfill all His promises. We are the recipients of the promise made to Jacob. That promise that Jacob never got to see with his earthly eyes—God has fulfilled. Most of you aren't from the nation of Israel, yet you are the fulfillment of that promise. You have been included in the blessing. So let's keep praying. Let's never give up. God's Son is with us, and He will be with us to the very end. He will close our eyes, and He will wake us up. Hallelujah. That's a prayer I have for my own soul. Are you convinced that what we see in this world isn't all there is? That's the question that Jesus poses to us today. In his teaching, he warns about the seductive power of wealth and the way it can blind us, casting a soul-numbing spell and fooling us into thinking that this present life is all that matters. You can't have an affair with money and still be married to God. You can't love both. Jesus says, "No one can serve two masters, for you will hate one and love the other. You'll be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money." Jesus gives us the odd story of the shrewd manager, saying the trick is to use our resources wisely—not for self, but for the sake of others, for friendship, for eternity. "Use your worldly resources to benefit others and make friends. Then when your earthly possessions are gone, they will welcome you to your eternal home." The connection is clear in the parable of Lazarus and the rich man: it's not the riches that mattered, but where the heart was anchored. In his poverty, Lazarus was shrewd—he trusted God, he made friends in the world to come. He lived a life of faith, knowing his deep need for God. We too must be shrewd, arranging our lives by faith, loving God more than money, holding onto him in trust and dependence. One of the most tragic things would be to come to the end of this life and realize we missed it all, blinded by pride, possessions, and successes—making this life all about us, failing to heed the words of Moses, the prophets, and the teachings of Jesus. Instead, let's love God more than money. When we do, we'll find the home, the joy, the life for which we were made. May we be people who see clearly, who love shrewdly, and who hold onto God above all things. That's a prayer I have for my own soul, for my family, and that is a prayer that I have for you. He's lived life on his own terms, and it hasn't worked out so well. When he returns, he's greeted with a kiss, a ring, a coat, a party. He's not only found his father, but he's found his father's heart. There's celebration. There's restoration. But there's another brother, too—the older brother. He needs to come home just as much. Yet we don't find him inside the house. He's close by, out working in the field, slaving away, trying to achieve, trying so hard. But he fails to see that home has been his all along. He misses who his father truly is. He won't come inside. The father pleads with him, but he's caught up in his own pain: "All these years I have slaved for you and never once refused to do a single thing you told me to. And all this time, you never gave me even one young goat for a feast with my friends." That hurts. Maybe because we can feel it ourselves sometimes, working, striving, thinking that joy and acceptance must be earned. But the father's response tells us everything: "Look, dear son, you have always stayed by me, and everything I have is yours." This home, this heart, these riches—have always been yours. They're a gift. No one is treating you like a slave, so stop seeing yourself that way. You haven't had to earn or perform or do anything other than be my child. All you had to do was receive and know the Father's heart, which delights in a son—delights in you—and delights when what was lost is found. So step inside the house. Partake in the party that your good Father has always had for you. Come on home. Let your heart know and receive this truth: you are not a slave—you are a son or a daughter. The Father's heart is yours. The joy is yours. Join the celebration. That's the prayer I have for my own soul. That's the prayer I have for my family. That's the prayer I have for you. May it be so. And putting ourselves at the head of the table will inevitably lead to our humiliation and our ruin. That's what this Pharisee and these teachings in Luke 14 point out. And inevitably, when we make this life about us, we miss out altogether on the party that God has prepared. That's what it seems to tell us here in this parable of the banquet. There's nothing wrong with having land or oxen, having a wife. There's nothing bad about these things. These are blessings. These are—these are and can be very good. But when they become ultimate things, they blind us to the gift that God is offering us. Because they become idols. And idols inevitably blind us. They fool us into thinking that we are the main character in this movie, that this life is my project, it's my story. We imagine that we sit at the head of the table in our own movie. Our spouse, our parents, our children—they are the supporting cast. We can begin to think that maybe it's all about us. And this posture in life will lead to a rude awakening someday. That's why Jesus says that we have to hate all of it in comparison to our love for God, because in the end, it will rob us of life. And the prayer of my own heart today is that I will see the richness and the reward, the party that has been prepared for those who receive and participate, who repent and believe that every good and perfect gift comes down from God, the Father of Lights, that he is the Source, and that every human being, no matter how humble they might be, have been invited into his very life. The prayer of my own soul is that I will sit there at the foot of the table with great joy at the life that I have in him; that I will learn the ways of self-giving love and follow him. That's a prayer that I have for my family too—for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: A walking stick and a mustard seed. Have you ever thought about what God can do with something small, something seemingly insignificant? In today's reading, Hunter points us to Jacob, a man who left home with nothing but a walking stick. Yet by God's faithfulness, he returned with more than he could have imagined. In the same breath, Jesus describes the kingdom of God as a mustard seed—so tiny at first that you can easily overlook it, but once planted, it grows into the largest of all the garden plants. A walking stick and a mustard seed—both are symbols of faith, reminders that God delights in showing his greatness through what is humble and small, revealing his strength through what is weak. The journey of faith is not always triumphant in the ways we expect. It can often feel more like a wrestling match than a victory march. You'll wrestle—with your flesh, with your past, with the uncertainty ahead. There are hidden idols, hidden fears, secret shames—things that our earthly fathers can't see but our heavenly Father does. In the end, we must let them go. This life with God is a wrestling match above all with God himself. When we truly wrestle with him, we are changed—marked by the encounter. There may be a limp, a hitch in our step, a reminder that walking with God is not about our own strength, but about being emptied—so that Christ may live within us. Just as Jacob emptied himself, sending everything he had across the river, facing the night all alone—so, too, are we called, at times, to empty ourselves, to surrender, to cling desperately to God's blessing. It's in that emptiness, in surrender, where we receive a new name. Jacob became Israel. We, too, are promised a new identity, a new future, a new hope. Let him lead you across that river into what he has promised. Don't despise small beginnings or fear your frailty. When we are weak, he is strong. When our hands are empty, he fills them. And in wrestling, surrender, and faith, he makes us new. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. Let us walk by faith, embracing the weakness and the smallness, knowing that God is in them and will show his strength through us. May we, too, be changed by meeting him face to face. TODAY'S DEVOTION: TODAY'S DEVOTION: Whose blessing will you see and receive? In today's readings, we're confronted with an important question: will you force things and be a fool, or will you trust, rest, receive, and believe? There's this invitation to examine whose blessing we're truly seeking. Is it our own, through striving and scheming like Jacob, Rachel, and Leah? Or is it, as Jesus tells us, the blessing that comes from God—a blessing that leads to a rich relationship with him? The rich fool in Jesus' parable thought that security and blessing came from his own plans, his bigger barns, from storing up for himself and relying on his own resources. But Jesus reminds us, as he does his disciples, that blessing doesn't come from our hands; it comes from God's. When we seek blessing elsewhere—whether in possessions, in the approval of others, or our own ability to manipulate circumstances—we end up empty, left wanting and still searching. In the end, it's only God who can give us the true inheritance, the true blessing our souls crave. Jesus invites us away from anxious striving and fear. He says, "Look at the ravens… look at the lilies." He points to the way God provides for what he has made, how much more for us. The real blessing is not in the abundance of things, but in a rich relationship with God—a life lived trusting his love, resting in his care, and seeking the kingdom above all else. And so the call for us today is simple, but profound: let us seek his blessing by faith. Let's rest in the deep, deep love of Jesus, believing the good news that, in him, we have been embraced, forgiven, and made God's own. When we live in this reality, that blessing begins to look like a life of peace, joy, and trust—a rich relationship with the Lord who loves us. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. Let's walk together, step by step, in this daily journey of faith! TODAY'S DEVOTION: He's angry. These teachers are a bunch of fakes. He's angry because these teachers of His Word ought to be offering people something real, something true. He's angry because they're a bunch of religious, self-righteous, self-serving hypocrites, and Jesus is none too happy about it. They're telling lies about God, and the main one is a lie of separation. God is separate, he's distant, and he's angry. He's angry until you perform the right religious duties, until you wash your hands the right way, until you wash your cup in just the right way, until you give the right amount of everything that you own in just the right way. Even the herbs in your garden and a thousand other things like this were all used as a way of ensuring that you knew that God was separate from you, that he was angry with you. And this message of separation served these guys well. They leveraged it for coercion and control, for power, prestige, and money. They used this lie to become important in the eyes of those with power. They liked to walk around with their flowing robes in the marketplaces. They liked when important people, powerful people, recognized them and honored them. All the while the people suffer. Jesus looked at this and declared it hogwash. He called them hypocrites, snakes, vipers. In effect, Jesus says, you say that you speak for God, but you don't know God. If you knew God, you would know his justice, not yours, which is so rarely just. You would know his love—his love which declares that God is not separate. Rather, God is here. He is with us, and God is for all people. He is wanting his people and his priests who use his name to tell the truth, to demonstrate the love and justice of God, to live in the reality of the God who is with us, the God who is their present king, because it's true and the world so desperately needs it. If you read the Bible and you're left with a God who is separate, distant, petty, and angry, more concerned with how much turmeric you tithe than he is about you loving your neighbor and knowing that you are loved, then you've been sold a lie and you have completely missed the point of who he is. Because the point of his word is to show us that God is for us, not against us. That God is good. That God is not petty, but abounding in grace and mercy. That God is present and he is full of love. This was the message of all the prophets. God. God is with you, people. Wake up. Wake up to the God who is with you. He's angry that religion has become a way to crush people's spirits with unbearable religious demands rather than something that sets them free and makes them new. Jesus begins this reading in Luke by telling us that God is something completely different than what the Pharisees are selling. Jesus says God's not like that. God is good. When you ask him for good things, he doesn't give you scorpions and snakes. He's a good father. Don't let circumstances and the seeming delay in God's response to your need dissuade you from the truth of his kindness. Like the man who's knocking and seeking and asking for bread, God comes through. So keep asking, keep knocking, keep seeking. God's not angry with you. Don't let others or the circumstances prevent you from knowing the kind of father that you really have. Your Father knows what it's like to give his children good gifts. Earthly fathers know what it's like to do that. How much more will our good Father give good gifts if we ask for them? Jesus is angry at the evil in this world that keeps people from knowing and experiencing his loving kindness. God's not angry with you. What's the gift the good Father is giving? He's giving himself. He's giving the Holy Spirit. How much more will your Heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him? He is offering himself to be with us and in us. Pray that God will renew your mind so that you will no longer see your Father as separate from you and angry with you, but rather as good and kind. He wants to give you everything. May your soul, may my soul, may we know this well today. That's my prayer. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Jesus is telling a secret, and he is thrilled at the thought of it. In Luke 10, verse 21, we find Jesus filled with joy through the Holy Spirit, saying, "O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and revealing them to the childlike. Yes, Father, it pleased you to do it this way." This secret fills both the Father and the Son with great joy. So what is this secret? The secret is Jesus himself. He is the way to God, the way to life. He is what every heart is looking for. Jesus is the King, and he is proclaiming the kingdom. Jesus is the secret to it all. It's not the law, not traditions or piety, but living in the name, the power, and the presence of God. The God who is with us and for us. When Jesus sends out the 72, notice he tells them not to take anything with them—no bag, no money, no staff, nothing but his name. The only thing they are equipped with is the name of Jesus. The "with God life" isn't about our resources, our money, our provisions, but only about him. They are to go with his name, his message, his blessing, and his presence to the world. This is the "with God life"—a life of utter reliance on God, of being available to his presence and his agenda. When we allow him to lead, we end up fulfilling the law, becoming people of mercy, like the Good Samaritan. We participate with Christ; his power works in and through us. We're not the hero—Christ in us is. That's the secret: his presence in you, which Paul says is your hope of glory. Let's live in the reality of Christ in us. Let's awaken to the wonder of stepping out into the day simply in his name—not striving, not pushing or fretting, but knowing our real life is hidden with God in Christ. Our truest self is found in learning more and more to love God, our neighbor, and ourselves. Today, walk with him, eyes and ears wide open to his presence in you. Let him lead, and let him fill you with his joy. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, for my daughters, for my son. What do you think the prevailing message of Jesus is? You would think that'd be a pretty easy question to answer. But I'm guessing that in a room full of people, there'd be many different kinds of answers to that question. But in Luke 9, as well as throughout the Gospels and in the Book of Acts, we're told many times very plainly what that message is. The central prevailing message of the Bible and of Jesus is the kingdom of God. The kingdom of God is here and the king is Jesus. And this king has come to reconcile the world to God. His rule and authority are being made known wherever he goes. He uses that in the feeding of the multitudes, the healing of the demon possessed, the opening up of the eyes of the blind, the healing of the lame, those who can't speak and hear. He is the king. And wherever he goes, the kingdom is showing up. Citizenship in this kingdom is being made available to ordinary people. His life is being offered and extended to the whole world, to us broken folks. And the good news of that kingdom is that God has made a way through Christ to reconcile us, to make us new, to make us citizens and bring us under his rule and reign, to make us his. By his death on the cross, he has reconciled us to himself. And now by the Spirit of God, he has empowered us to manifest his kingdom life, to live it out, the very life of his Son. As Jesus walks with us through our life, the kingdom shows up. The result of his kingdom life in us is freedom, joy, love, the fruit of the Spirit. And when we do that, we are set free. We're set free from our past, our regrets, our shame. And we live in the joy of forgiveness and our adoption and inclusion in the very life and love of God. The one sitting on the throne said, look, I'm making everything new, everything. And we see it wherever Jesus goes. There is power in the King. There's power in his abiding life with us. And this king has made you his own. You are a citizen and he is your king. Let us live as citizens of the kingdom of God. Let us embrace this message of the abiding and saving life, the reconciling life of Christ. Let us be ambassadors of this message of our great King. Let's tell people that they have been reconciled in Christ. See it, believe it, repent, change your mind and step into the life that is yours. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my own family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. Something unthinkable is being asked of Abraham. He is being asked to offer his one and only son, the son that he loves, as a sacrifice on the mountain. It is a test of obedience that, at first glance, seems unimaginable. But perhaps, in Abraham's world, it was not altogether unthinkable. The cultures surrounding him, and indeed, cultures throughout history, have at times required the blood of a human to appease or manipulate their gods. Abraham would have known these stories and expectations. But he also knew something else—the God who called him, who promised him a son even in extreme old age, who reminded him of blessings as countless as the stars. This God who walked with Abraham in his darkest, most barren moments was not like any of the others. Abraham had learned to walk with and trust God, and he believed that this God was not bloodthirsty or capricious, nor distant or angry and waiting to pounce. Abraham believed God was good—the God who meets us in our need, our shame, our barren places, the God who provides. On that mountain, God makes Himself known as Jehovah Jireh, the Lord who provides. He is not a God who requires us to atone by our own blood, or by the blood of those we love. No, God has a different way. Instead, it is He who provides the offering. The Father does not kill His Son—instead, the Son offers Himself, and is killed by humanity. Through His offering, He overcomes evil, wins the victory for us, conquering sin and darkness, and making a way for us to live. Abraham reasoned that, even if Isaac died, God was able to revive him—because Abraham knew, at the core, that God is good and can be trusted with our very lives. That knowledge—the character of God—changes everything. God comes to us in our lowest, most hopeless places, and brings resurrection, new life. On Mount Moriah, and then on the cross, God Himself provides what we cannot. He gives us victory, healing, hope. My prayer today is that my eyes would open to see as Abraham saw: the character of our God who provides, who is trustworthy, who is good. That I would walk with Him and know the freedom, the life, and the joy of being loved and provided for by Him. And that is my prayer for my family—for my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that is my prayer for you. May it be so. Maybe, like John sitting in prison, you feel forgotten or overlooked. You might have been obedient, zealous—done all that God has asked of you—yet circumstances haven't gone the way you would have hoped. Maybe you wonder, "Why isn't God showing up for me? Why isn't He bailing me out?" That's where John the Baptist found himself—hearing stories of Jesus healing Gentiles, raising the dead, and still waiting for God to act in his own life. He sends friends to Jesus and asks, "Are you the one? Are you the plan, or should we wait for someone else?" And Jesus' reply comes back: Yes, I am the plan! Just look—the blind see, lepers are healed, the deaf hear, and the good news is preached to the poor. Jesus' answer is to point to what God is doing, to the evidence of the kingdom breaking in. He says, don't turn away in disbelief. Don't believe the lie that God is holding back, that He is vindictive, petty, or unconcerned about you. That is never the truth. The truth is seen completely in the face of Jesus. God is not against us. He's not withholding. He is with us—abiding, forgiving, loving, liberating. He is healing our brokenness, opening our eyes, restoring us to new life. He is the plan for mending this broken world. He is the plan for mending your broken world, your broken heart. Don't let your circumstances turn you away from believing in Him. Remember the woman who comes to Jesus despite her shame, her reputation, her circumstances. She lets nothing stand in her way—her pride, her ego, her social standing—because her eyes are fixed on Jesus, her eyes have been opened to the truth: she is forgiven, known, loved, and embraced. In knowing this, she holds onto this truth and lives in the joy and freedom that Christ brings. May our prayer be that we will also have eyes like hers—eyes fixed on Jesus, God's plan—not looking for another, but finding everything we need in Him. May we know in Him everything there is to know about God and about who we really are. May we be set free and know His joy. That's a prayer for my own soul, for my family, and for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.   And now Lord,  make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.  Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope.  Where there is darkness, light.  And where there is sadness,  Joy.  Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.  For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life.  Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image.
