Episode 125 – Behaviour and Thyroid Disease This is a big topic, and I really enjoyed diving into it. I think we can all agree that the outdated notion that low thyroid hormone levels in dogs directly causes aggression is exactly that – outdated. However, changes or dysregulation in thyroid hormone levels in both dogs and cats can still affect behaviour and this is what I chat about in this episode. Here are some of the things I mention in the episode: · The differences in canine and feline thyroid disease · Causes of hypothyroidism in dogs · Incidence of hypothyroidism in the canine population · Hormone cascade regulation · Clinical signs of hypothyroidism and how these can affect behaviour I also talk about the complexities of diagnosis of thyroid disease and how this can be influenced by certain medications. Here are the studies I reference in the episode: Gulikers, K.P. and Panciera, D.L., 2003. Evaluation of the effects of clomipramine on canine thyroid function tests. Journal of veterinary internal medicine, 17(1), pp.44-49. Radosta, L.A., Shofer, F.S. and Reisner, I.R., 2012. Episode 123 – 15-minute Speed Coaching with Dr Laura Stoeker Welcome to another 15-minute Speed Coaching Session for Veterinary and Pet Care Professionals! In this episode, I chat to US based veterinarian, Dr Laura Stoeker, who has questions about Hyperactivity/Hypersensitivity Syndrome / Hyperkinesis in dogs. Dr Laura's own dog struggles with these behaviours, so she has a keen interest in this syndrome, and she also has a keen interest in Behaviour Medicine in general as, like so many of us, she is seeing more and more behaviour presentations in her work as a GP vet. In this episode, we talk about the main clinical signs associated with HSHA syndrome, the Differential Diagnoses, the purported underlying neurotransmitter imbalances and treatment approaches. Episode 122 – Canine Sociability with Daniel Shaw Dogs are social creatures and the need for social connection and social experiences as well as the lack of those can sometimes result in unwanted behavioural presentations. In this super-cool episode, Daniel and I chat about: · The difference between fear or panic when dogs are separated from social partners and frustration at lacking or hampered social interactions with other dogs and the neurobiological systems that underlie both of these scenarios! · Social buffering and how this can really help some dogs that are perhaps fearful or anxious. · How we can help dogs adapt better to differing social demands. · Differing attachment styles and how these can impact social confidence and security. · A case I saw the same day as the recording that posed a number of challenges from a canine sociability point of view. Daniel and I are both really interested in the neurobiological and neurobiochemical underpinnings of behaviour and, dare I say it, can totally geek out about the brain processes that underlie behaviour as well as how we can practically apply this to our cases. If you're in any way interested in canine social behaviour, neurobiology and treatment approaches of some of the socially motivated behavioural challenges we see in our canine patients, this episode is a must-listen! If you'd like to learn more about Canine Behaviour, then my "Learn To Speak Dog" course is for you: https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/learn-to-speak-dog And if you'd like to find out more about Daniel's amazing work in the "Brain and Behaviour Academy" you can find out more right here: https://www.brainandbehaviouracademy.co.uk/ or https://www.brainandbehaviouracademy.co.uk/bundles/brain-and-behaviour-plus If you liked this episode of the show, Veterinary Behaviour Chat, please LEAVE A 5-STAR REVIEW, like, share, and subscribe! Episode 120 – Suspicion of Chronic Pain with Dr Hannah Capon One of the questions I get asked most frequently is how, if you are suspicious that your patient may be experiencing pain or discomfort, to relay this suspicion to the pet's GP vet or caregiver. Oftentimes, we see something during a consultation – a change in capability, posture, gait or behaviour – that makes us think there may be an underlying physical health challenge for our patient. But convincing GP vets or caregivers of the same can be challenging and frustrating. That is why, when I saw Dr Hannah Capon present her "Suspicion of Chronic Pain" document at one of the conferences we attended together last year, I had a light bulb moment of "this is exactly what we need". In this episode, Hannah and I chat about how the resource came into existence, how we like to use it and we highlight all the different scenarios this document might be so valuable in. It is important to note that this is not a validated tool, but rather an amazing, easy-to-use resource to be scribbled on during consultations and then presented to whomever needs to see it – be it caregiver or GP vet. It is also an incredible teaching tool to demonstrate that a patient is in pain or discomfort, and exactly which signs are raising red flags for us. I honestly wouldn't be without it anymore and I have it on my desk for literally ALL of my consultations – canine and feline. This amazing resource is included in Trinity's Professional Guides E-Book, which you can purchase right here: https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/trinity-ebook And, you can, of course find it in CAM's MemberZone: www.caninearthritis.co.uk If you liked this episode of the show, Veterinary Behaviour Chat, please LEAVE A 5-STAR REVIEW, like, share, and subscribe! The rules of the game are as follows: · Episodes will be in-the-moment, off-the-cuff and unscripted. · Coaching sessions will be 15 Minutes MAXIMUM, so wherever we finish, we finish… · Which means that we might not find complete resolution to your question, but we will certainly get the thought process started! In this episode, I chat to Hungarian veterinarian, Dr Lilla Balatonyi, about one of her complex cases that involves both pain- as well as behavioural management. Have a listen to the unique challenges that this little Dachshund brings with him and how we discuss navigating those challenges to find a welfare positive outcome for him ! Episode 118 – A Conversation with Triple Boarded Veterinary Behaviourist, Dr Kersti Seksel What an honour to have this conversation with my good friend and residency mentor, triple boarded Veterinary Behaviourist, Dr Kersti Seksel. Kersti is one of the most inspirational pioneers of the Veterinary Behaviour industry, being boarded not only in America and Europe but also Australia. Have a listen as we chat about Kersti's entry into Veterinary Behaviour Medicine, the early cases she saw, early use of Veterinary Psychopharmacology, and how she started to introduce veterinary mental and emotional ill health to the profession across the world. We also talk about Kersti's love of teaching – students, residents, vets and allied professionals and how she herself learns something new every time she teaches. We finish the conversation on a high and talk about how we both feel Veterinary Psychiatry will positively impact our patients, the profession and health on a global scale going forwards. Episode 117 – Melatonin This was such an interesting episode to record and one that certainly left me with more questions than answers. In response to a question posed by a listener, I did a bit of a deep dive into melatonin, which resulted in some very interesting findings… The general consensus about the use of melatonin within the Veterinary Behaviour world is that we simply don't have enough evidence of its anxiolytic or calming properties – both anecdotally as well as in the literature. I did, however, find some other very interesting uses of melatonin, which I talk about in the episode. I also chat about the use of melatonin as part of the "Chill Protocol" as described by Costa et.al. in JAVMA, 2023: Costa, R.S., Jones, T., Robbins, S., Stein, A. and Borns-Weil, S., 2023. Gabapentin, melatonin, and acepromazine combination prior to hospital visits decreased stress scores in aggressive and anxious dogs in a prospective clinical trial. Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 261(11), pp.1660-1665. In summary, melatonin is an extremely interesting neurohormone that has so many incredible effects, however, the jury is still out on its use and effectiveness as an anxiolytic. It may, however, be a useful agent for canine and feline patients showing sleep-wake-cycle abnormalities due to Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome. Episode 114 – Hyperactivity – HSHA - Hyperkinesis This is quite a big episode and a very interesting topic - definitely one that I am hearing more conversations and questions about. In this episode, I will talk about the "classification" of hyperactivity – what it is, what it is not, the differential diagnoses that need to be considered before declaring a diagnosis of hyperactivity or hyperkinesis and how to actually narrow down that diagnosis. I talk about a wonderful document that was designed by Dr Karen Overall and her team, which addresses some of the differential diagnoses and their corresponding behavioural signs - see the document here: https://vth.upei.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Behaviour-Tips_Active-dogs_final.pdf And, I discuss treatment protocols and psychopharmacological interventions that can be used to help these patients. Please see here the paper by Dr Stephane Bleuer-Elsner that I mention in the podcast: Bleuer-Elsner, S., Muller, G., Beata, C., Zamansky, A. and Marlois, N., 2021. Effect of fluoxetine at a dosage of 2-4 mg/kg daily in dogs exhibiting hypersensitivity-hyperactivity syndrome, a retrospective study. Journal of Veterinary Behavior, 44, pp.25-31. Episode 113 – Equine Behaviour Medicine with Dr Gemma Pearson Wow, wow, wow, what a great episode and, obviously, a topic that, as an owner of 2 Sports Horses, is so very close to my heart. Dr Gemma Pearson is a truly inspiring individual who has carved out an impressive career niche in Equine Veterinary Behaviour Medicine. This has allowed her to make an incredible difference in the equestrian sports world and massively improve the welfare and wellbeing of so many horses. In this episode, we chat about what initially sparked Gemma's interest in Equine Behaviour Medicine, how she was able to build an Equine Behaviour Service during her residency at Edinburgh University and some of the incredible cases that she has encountered during her career. We also chat about her PhD, the use of psychopharmacology (and its limitations) in equine patients and Gemma's great work with BEVA on the "Don't Break Your Vet" campaign and the "Hold Your Horses" course. If you love horses this will be a truly inspiring episode to listen to, and even if you're not a horse person, but love hearing about inspirational stories and Veterinary Behaviour Medicine in general, this is an episode not to miss! Episode 112 – Feline Human Directed Aggression Aggressive cats can be just as scary as aggressive dogs – to some people even more so as their body language may not be as easy to understand as that of dogs. Feline Human Directed Aggression can be difficult to pick apart and coming up with a diagnosis really requires a good understanding of feline behaviour. In this episode, I chat through my main list of differential diagnoses when approaching these cases and how I use feline body language and facial expressions to help guide my decision making. I talk about the most common physical health contributors to feline human directed aggression, how to differentiate between emotionally driven and predatory behaviours and how early life experiences, the physical and social environment and human-feline interactions can contribute to aggressive behaviours. If you would like to learn more about Feline Behaviour, then my "Learn To Speak Cat" course is a great resource for you: https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/learn-to-speak-cat If you'd like support with a Feline case, then you can book a 30-minute Vet-Vet or Vet-Pet Care Professional Consultation with me right here: https://calendly.com/trinityvet/teams-and-professionals If you can't find an appointment time to suit you, please email us at info@trinityvetbehaviour.com to find a time that suits us both! Episode 106 – Multi-Cat Households - Treating more than just the Patients Here in the UAE, I see many multi-cat households with behavioural presentations. These households can range from 2 to 32 (my biggest ever MCH!) cats and are hugely complex to understand, assess, evaluate and treat. If you know anything about feline behaviour, you know that cats are socially flexible, non-socially obligate, obsessed with resources and often unable to reconcile differences or hostile relationships with other cats. This can lead to a whole host of problems including undesirable elimination outside the litter box, inter-cat aggression and physical health manifestations of stress. In this episode I chat through my approach to large multi-cat households and how, even if the caregivers highlight only some specific cats in the household as showing problematic behaviours, I always consider the effect that these situations have on ALL the cats in the home. If you'd like to learn more about Feline Behaviour, then my "Learn To Speak Cat" course is an absolute must for you! https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/learn-to-speak-cat If you'd like to book a 30-minute Vet-Vet or Vet-Pet Care Professional Consultation with me, you can do that right here: https://calendly.com/trinityvet/teams-and-professionals If you can't find an appointment time to suit you, please email us at info@trinityvetbehaviour.com to find a time that suits us both!
