Description

Mother and son team Mom and Mac discuss, analyze, dissect and explore international horror movies. Conversations are casual but spoiler-heavy. We take turns choosing a genre or subgenre of horror and pairing an international film with an American one. Past episodes have included: Funny Games, One Missed Call, Let the Right One In/Let Me In. Genres we have covered are Animal Attack (BOAR from Australia and TREMORS); Creepy Kids (GOODNIGHT, MOMMY from Austria and ORPHAN); Battle Royale-type films (BATTLE ROYALE from Japan and THE BELKO EXPERIMENT); Haunted Houses (THE HOUSE AT THE END OF TIME from Venezuela and BEETLEJUICE). Special episodes feature foundational international horror films or guests who come on to highlight a film that "Means the World of Horror" to them. https://linktr.ee/WorldofHorror

Send us a text WoHos! We had such a good time with our Feel Good Fall Films that we decided to do two more: PARANORMAN & TURNING RED, two modern classics of animation. PARANORMAN: A misunderstood boy takes on ghosts, zombies and grown-ups to save his town from a centuries-old curse. TURNING RED: A thirteen-year-old girl named Mei Lee is torn between staying her mother's dutiful daughter and the changes of adolescence. And as if the challenges were not enough, whenever she gets overly exci...
Send us a text WoHos! Sometimes you have to break your own rules, you know what I mean? While we usually pair an international horror film with an American one, this week, we looked at two American films. We tried not to swear, but that was a fool's errand! We reviewed THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS & K-POP DEMON HUNTERS. KPDH was new to us, but we revisited NIGHTMARE, which is an old favorite for us both. Next time we will be looking at MORE Feel Good Fall Films with TURNING RED & PA...
Send us a text WoHos! This week Mac & I discuss two films that are about Trying to Defy Fate. We looked at the South Korean film A DAY/HARU and FINAL DESTINATION: BLOODLINES from the US. On the next main show, Mac & I will discuss "Feel Good Fall Films" with THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS & KPOP DEMON HUNTERS. Coming up, we ...

Send us a text This week, despite technical difficulties and returning back to school, we were able to have a wonderful conversation about serial killers. We had to stitch together three different recordings together, but I think I smoothed it out pretty well. We both listened to and watched AMERICAN PSYCHO and had fun comparing them despite being traumatized by Bret Easton Ellis. Mom thinks MEMOIR OF A MURDERER (not to be confused with MEMORIES OF MURDER) is a good watch once. Mac migh...

Send us a text WoHos! This week I had the pleasure of speaking to filmmaker and Animal Attacks film fan, Stefan MacDonald-Labelle. We spoke about his film, HEAD LIKE A HOLE and the incomprehensible DEEP BLOOD, which is 3/4 teen drama and 1/4 anti-shark propaganda. Neither of us had seen it and now we are both forever changed. We also discuss Stefan's adventures on the Indie Film Festival Circuit, crossing the border into the U.S., cute dogs, and the insufferable heat. Next time on the main sh...
Send us a text WoHos! This week our focus was "Big Ol' Monsters". We watched GODZILLA (1954) and one of Mac's childhood faves, CLOVERFIELD. We also talked about: Fireworks, Popping out of the news, social anxiety (obvs), old people at the Y, Mom's memories of 9/11, and Mac's memories of being a flower girl. Do these films hold up? Half of them do! We love you, WoHo's. DON'T go into the basement!! Gerry Entriken: WoHo Outro Theme Support the show Opening Theme "Bucket" by Gerry Entriken Closi...

Send us a text WoHos! This week we looked at two vampire films--one more than 100 years old! We also talked about: Mac taking ballet classes, default pronouns for trans people, Mac's birthday and the grief monster, the no-call list for Father's Day, discreetly asking if one's parents are still alive and the off-label use of teaspoons. Next time we look at more classical horror with The Phantom of the Opera (1925) and The Phantom of the Paradise. Remember, WoHos! We love you and DON'T go into ...
Send us a text WoHos!! And hello to all our new WoHos! Welcome! This week we looked at two horror films that take place in retirement homes: NEXT OF KIN (1982) & THE RULE OF JENNY PEN. The first is a moody giallo-esque vibe of a film and the second is an exploration of tyrnany and how difficult it may be to fight. We had a lovely chat and we'd love to hear what you thought of these films! Next time we look at Vampire films with NOSFERATU (1922) and 30 DAYS of NIGHT. Remember...We lo...
Send us a text WoHos!! This is one chatty episode! We looked at READY OR NOT & THE PLATFORM this week--two horror films about class warfare. We also talked: Lack of spatial awareness, Mom's friendly town, "Kids today", rich people we've known, befuddlement over billionaires, and sobriety, among other things. Next time on the main show Mac & I will talk "Horror in the Old Folks' Home" with NEXT OF KIN from Australia and THE RULE OF JENNY PEN from the US (but set in New Zealand?) Thanks...
Send us a text WoHos! Welp. This week we looked at two films, all right. Mom hated THE PERFECTION and there was no love lost between Mac & STOPMOTION. CW for mention/suggestion of child rape in THE PERFECTION and childhood trauma in STOPMOTION. Both films are about mental illness and both fail spectacularly in its depiction. THE PERFECTION could have been a joyous, campy romp, but it is too careless with its subject matter and results in a horribly distasteful mess. STOPMOTION has some wo...
Send us a text WoHos! Mac and I are back to talk all things "Forest Horror" with two Englsih horror films: EDEN LAKE from 2008 and THE RITUAL from 2017. The Internet describes EDEN LAKE as "A young couple on a romantic weekend break at a remote lakehouse, are terrorised by a group of vicious delinquents". The Internet describes THE RITUAL as "Reuniting after the tragic death of their friend, four college pals set out to hike through the Scandinavian wilderness. A wrong turn leads them into th...

Send us a text WoHos! This time I am joined by Stefan MacDonald-Labelle, my friend and filmmaker, to discuss Parker Finn's SMILE 2. This film really scared me! Stefan had fun! We'd recommend it! In this ramble, we also discuss: The overuse of inverted shots, how films need to retire mirror gags, ADD coping strategies, and how many ways you can be messed up in the head, among other topics. Mac and I will return in April with a new slate of shows. Thank you for all your understanding and ...
Send us a text Q-Balls! WoHos! This week we discuss HERETIC, which is half a good movie, anyway. From IMDb: Two young religious women are drawn into a game of cat-and-mouse in the house of a strange man. ...but what a CHARMING man! We loved the first part, but the second part enraged Quinn and turned Christina right off. We're not sure what we will cover next, but it will be fun whatever it is!! Thanks for all your support.
