The former captain of Team Canada and two-time Olympic gold medallist wears a lot of hats these days. These include roles as a special advisor for the PWHL, an analyst for NHL on ESPN, and, most recently, an author. Her new book, titled Just a Girl, is a memoir that paints a relatable picture of a kid who falls in love with the game and aspires to play at the highest level possible, all while facing the challenge of pursuing a sport without a clear path for talented and aspiring female players. One of the stats that stands out in the book is that, in 1990, when the first Women's World Hockey Championships were held, there were only about 7,000 female players in all of Canada. Today, there are over 120,000 female players in Canada. With only 7,000 female participants in a country where hockey is part of our DNA, it really speaks to how Campbell-Pascall and other female players of her generation had to grow the game through sheer will and determination. Sweden has approximately 62,000 registered hockey players, and last season, there were 109 Swedish-born players in the National Hockey League. So, on a per-capita basis, Sweden produces one NHL player for every 568 registered players. By contrast, the United States produces one NHL player for every 1,682 registered players, while Canada produces one NHL player for every 1,073 registered players. This data certainly suggests that Sweden has a secret sauce when it comes to developing elite hockey talent. Lind has been a central figure in shaping Sweden's player development methodology, and as you're about to hear, many of the country's practices are outside the box but have resulted in arguably the most productive development model in our sport. As one of the top female coaches in all of hockey, Cheverie has served as head coach of the PWHL's Montréal Victoire for all three seasons of the league's existence, winning the Walter Cup last season and earning PWHL Coach of the Year honours in 2024-25 after guiding the Victoire to first place in the regular-season standings. Just two weeks ago, it was announced that Cheverie will be the Head Coach of Team Canada for the upcoming Women's World Championship, taking place November 6-16 in Denmark. She has represented Canada internationally on several occasions, winning gold medals as an assistant coach at the IIHF Women's World Championship in 2021, 2022 and 2024, in addition to the 2022 Olympic Winter Games, and silver medals at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games and the Women's Worlds in 2023 and 2025.
