In this episode, I speak with theologian and author Johannes Hartl about meaning, Christianity, masculinity, relationships, and the search for something deeper in an increasingly distracted and fragmented culture. We explore why young men in particular may be rediscovering Christianity, and whether it offers something that modern life struggles to provide: a coherent vision of what human beings are for, what is worth serving, and how to live a meaningful life. Drawing on theology, psychology, philosophy, and personal experience, we discuss the limits of self-optimization and productivity, the difference between concentration and genuine presence, and why human flourishing ultimately depends on relationship. We explore the Christian understanding of prayer, grace, sacrifice, and the ordering of our loves, including how seemingly healthy things such as family, romantic relationships, work, or nation can become destructive when they take the place of God. We also discuss masculinity, fatherhood, the wounds passed between generations, and why Christ offers such a demanding yet radically forgiving model of what it means to be a man. ------------------------------------------- See the Feral Philosophy YouTube channel HERE Support the Feral Philosophy mission by donating through Crowdfunder Want to become a certified embodiment coach? In this episode, I speak with Daniel Navrátil about The Odyssey as a map for male maturation, and what its ancient story can teach young men about growing up in the modern world. We explore the idea of initiation, why many young men lack meaningful rites of passage, and how the absence of guidance, community, and responsibility can leave them searching for initiation through risk, addiction, status, or self-destruction. Using Odysseus's journey home as a psychological map, we explore the dangers young men face along the way: arrogance, distraction, pornography, drugs, excessive pleasure, isolation, entitlement, the pursuit of fame, and the temptation to believe that success means having it all. We discuss the importance of discipline, humility, friendship, father figures, community, sacrifice, and learning to accept limits. We also examine why the modern world may be particularly difficult for young men, with phones, gaming, drugs, and social media providing increasingly powerful ways to numb themselves and lose sight of their purpose. The conversation turns to what mature masculinity actually looks like. We discuss the difference between strength and aggression, confidence and arrogance, independence and isolation, ambition and the pursuit of status. We explore mortality, devastating loss, choosing responsibility, committing to relationships, and learning that a meaningful life requires sacrifice. Throughout the episode, The Odyssey becomes a story not simply about adventure, but about becoming the kind of man who can finally come home: strong enough to act, wise enough to restrain himself, humble enough to learn, and committed enough to take responsibility for something beyond himself. ------------------------------------------- See the Feral Philosophy YouTube channel HERE Want to become a certified embodiment coach? In this episode, I speak with Owen Cox about The Lord of the Rings and why Tolkien's story continues to resonate so deeply with men. We explore the themes of masculinity, friendship, courage, temptation, power, and responsibility, and ask why a story written decades ago can still speak so directly to the challenges facing young men today. Drawing on Tolkien's Catholicism, Anglo-Saxon and Norse mythology, philosophy, and the history of the books themselves, we examine the deeper meanings behind the Ring, the Hobbits, Aragorn, Gandalf, and the Fellowship. Along the way, we discuss male friendship, initiation, leadership, addiction, lust, humility, sacrifice, and the tension between the desire for power and the willingness to serve something greater than yourself. The conversation turns to what Tolkien can teach modern men about becoming good men rather than simply becoming powerful ones. We discuss why the humble Hobbits are ultimately more capable of carrying great responsibility than those who desire power, why genuine male friendship has become increasingly difficult to find, and what modern culture may have lost by becoming cynical about traditional ideals of heroism, loyalty, and honour. ------------------------------------------- See the Feral Philosophy YouTube channel HERE Support the Feral Philosophy mission by donating through Crowdfunder Want to become a certified embodiment coach? In this episode, I speak with Jeremy Lipkowitz about pornography, addiction, sexuality, and why so many men struggle to break free from a habit that has become almost impossible to escape. We explore how constant exposure to sexual novelty can affect motivation, attention, intimacy, and the ability to appreciate what we already have, and why giving up porn can have benefits that go far beyond simply improving your sex life. Drawing on Buddhism, psychology, behavioural change, and his work helping men overcome porn addiction, we discuss integrity, shame, self-control, relationships, and the difference between suppressing an urge and changing the kind of person you want to become. Along the way, we explore why willpower and "streaks" often aren't enough, the importance of accountability and community, and how addiction can become a way of self-medicating loneliness, stress, or an unfulfilling life. The conversation turns to the role of healthy shame and moral standards in recovery. We discuss the Buddhist concepts of hiri and ottappa, the value of remorse, the difference between feeling that you have done something wrong and believing that you are fundamentally broken, and why a healthy moral framework can help men live with greater integrity. ------------------------------------------- See the Feral Philosophy YouTube channel HERE Want to become a certified embodiment coach? In this episode, I speak with Warren Farrell about the boy crisis, the changing relationship between men and women, and why so many young men feel increasingly disconnected from purpose, family, work, and society. We explore Farrell's journey from being one of the world's most prominent male supporters of feminism to becoming one of its strongest critics, and examine the data behind some of the most contentious claims about gender, domestic violence, pay, and male privilege. Drawing on decades of research into men, women, relationships, and family life, we discuss masculinity, male obligation, fatherhood, emotional resilience, marriage, divorce, and the changing expectations placed on men. Along the way, we examine why boys are falling behind in education, why men face higher rates of suicide and many other causes of death, and how the loss of traditional male roles has created a growing crisis of purpose and identity. The conversation turns to what young men can do in response. We discuss pornography, addiction, distraction, competence, responsibility, mentorship, community, and the importance of finding ways to be useful to others. We also explore the role of fathers, the importance of learning to handle criticism, and what men and women can do to build healthier relationships. ------------------------------------------- See the Feral Philosophy YouTube channel HERE Support the Feral Philosophy mission by donating through Crowdfunder Want to become a certified embodiment coach?
