We love an exploration of the world of Transactional Analysis and this is our fourth episode that attempts to explain some of the concepts that have emerged from Transactional Analysis theory. In this episode we're exploring the OK Corral, which provides a way of illustrating the idea of Life Positions, which emerged within the field of Transactional Analysis. The concept of Life Positions can help us, and our clients, to gain a better understanding of how we're showing up, what our values and beliefs are, and how we view the world and our place in it. The idea of Life Positions was developed by Thomas Harris in the 1960, with the publication of his book, 'I'm OK, You're OK'. Franklin Ernst's notion of 'The OK Corral' was a visual representation of the ideas that Thomas Harris had developed and set out to illustrate what is happening when people are OK or not OK within any social dynamic. In this episode we explore the OK Corral and offer our thoughts on how the concept might be useful to us and our coachees in the coaching room. Reflection is an essential aspect of any coaching practice and something that we actively encourage all of our students to do from the start of their coaching journeys. Coaching conversations happen in the moment and the emergent nature of them means that they could go in many directions. Where the conversation flows is dependent on the thinking of the coach and the coachee in real time. There is little time to reflect on what went well, what didn't go so well and what might have been different. Engaging in some reflective practice will help any coach, whatever their experience, to find new ways of looking at their coaching conversations and will definitely help to inform future sessions. For less experienced coaches, reflecting on a coaching session can spark some curiosity about different approaches, tools and techniques that might have been useful to utilise within a coaching conversation, and provide some motivation to continue learning. For more experienced coaches, reflection can help to ward off any complacency and slipping into unhelpful ways of being in the coaching room. Taking time to reflect on the possible impact the coaching sessions are having on us, as coaches, is also a valuable way to keep taking care of ourselves and to notice when we might be in need of support. In this episode we share some models that can help to facilitate our reflections as coaches. Join us for a conversation that might just offer you a new favourite way to reflect on your coaching. Presence is a topic that is often talked about in coaching and we shared our thoughts on the subject in podcast episode 107. Hopefully, if you listened to that episode, you'll now have a handle on how presence shows up in coaching. But if we have a good idea about what presence looks like in the coaching room, what about the opposite, in the form of absence; how does that appear in coaching relationships? It's difficult to talk about absence, without turning the conversation into one about presence, but we have given it a go. In this episode of the podcast we explore what we mean by absence, whether that's on the part of the coach or the coachee, and how we might create the conditions to make it less prevalent. We consider how we might stay curious when absence does occur in the coaching room and how we might seek to understand what is happening in that moment. Enjoy the podcast? A topic that comes up time and time again in coaching is boundaries. And it is making a return to the podcast this week. Back in episode 5 we covered this as an area for coaching, and we said we would come back to it again, so here we are, this time hoping to help create a better understanding for our coaching doctors, and, in turn helping coachees to create better boundaries. In this episode we explore what various different coaching approaches have to offer when it comes to boundaries and how we might, as transformational coaches, demonstrate some agility in moving between the approaches. In this way we may well be able to explore different elements of 'Boundaries' with our coachees and help them to become better at setting and maintaining their own boundaries. Enjoy the podcast? Is anyone really uncoachable? You may recall Tom saying on a previous podcast that he could have a good coaching conversation with Barack Obama but that he would probably turn down the opportunity to coach the current American president, and that perhaps he is uncoachable. In this episode we explore this topic more deeply, looking at what might get in the way of someone being coachable at the time that we come to coach them. We also explore whether coaching is right for everyone and whether we can possibly be the right coach for everyone. We also explore whether Tom has softened his stance on coaching the current president or whether he really is uncoachable. Enjoy the podcast? This year we launched our Advanced Transformational Coaching Diploma programme and we're now into our fourth iteration of the course. Although the Advanced Diploma programme is just for the graduates of our initial diploma programme, we thought it was worth letting our listeners know how they might move on with their learning once they have completed their first coaching training course with us. So, if you've studied with us in the past, are doing so currently or have an idea that you might wish to in the future, then this podcast episode is well worth a listen, to gain a flavour of what the advanced course entails and an understanding of why we have developed this additional learning. So, you've learnt to coach, you've got some tools and techniques under your belt, and you have some experience of coaching. You are putting your coaching offer out there to the world and ready to take on clients. But what does your coaching look like? Do you take an emergent approach to your coaching or do you have a structured coaching programme to offer to potential clients. Whilst Tom is a very emergent coach, Helen offers a more organised approach to coaching out to the world in the form of a coaching programme. In this episode we share our thoughts on the benefits and possible pitfalls of having a coaching programme and what needs to be considered when putting one together. How do you see yourself as a coach? A newbie? Experienced? Professional? However you see yourself, it is likely that your coachees see you in a way that makes sense for them. And whilst there may be some crossover in your perceptions, there may well be some differences. And with those differences may come differing expectations, or even challenges to look out for. Tom recently saw an article about how coachees might perceive their coach, and thought it would be an interesting conversation to share with you all. So listen in as we explore some interesting, and occasionally odd ideas about how we might be seen as coaches. Enjoy the podcast? Coaching is not something that can be learned by reading or talking about it. Coaching is not something that can be learned by us telling you how it is done, or even demonstrating it for you. Coaching is a practice and it takes practice to become a competent and confident coach. It's also important that you receive regular feedback on your coaching. This will help you to improve your awareness of what you're doing in the coaching room; both what you are doing well and where you can improve. In this episode we are talking about our coaching practice groups, what they entail and why you might want to come along, whether you are new to our coaching programme, or took part in one of our earliest cohorts. Keep an eye out for our emails telling you when our next co-coaching practice groups are happening. Enjoy the podcast? We often collaborate with the team at Wild Monday, the organisation responsible for the 'You Are Not A Frog' podcast. Both of us have been lucky enough to have chatted to Rachel Morris on their podcast. This week we returned the favour and invited one of their team, Dr Sarah Coope to have a conversation with Helen. Sarah, a former GP, is now an executive coach with a focus on conflict resolution and burnout prevention. She's also now the head of live training at Wild Monday. Is the universe conspiring to bring us what we want in our lives? Probably not! Are we able to focus our attention so that we notice previously unnoticed objects and information. Most certainly! Does the Reticular Activating System guide our attention to the elements that are important for our lives. Contrary to popular opinion, absolutely not! In this episode Tom airs his frustrations about an often referred to part of the brain called the Ascending Reticular Activating System, or the RAS for short. This brain region that sits in the brain stem does have an important function when it comes to attention, but it's often interpreted as a completely different function. We discuss the RAS, what it actually does for us and what people tend to suggest that it is doing, even though the neuroscience doesn't back this up. Tom loves a juicy bit of neuroscience, but does become slightly irritated by neuro-nonsense, so likes to set the record straight where he can. Join us for this fascinating exploration of an important part of the brain, its function and the myth that is attributed to it. Enjoy the podcast? Having different internal parts of our psyche has been provoking interest in great thinkers for thousands of years. The Greeks and the Romans had the theory of us all having different humours Freud had his id, ego and superego, and psychologists ever since have been playing with different theories about the different parts that we may possess and how best to integrate them into our overall identity. In this episode we explore what Parts Work is, the journey that it has travelled over the last 50 years and the different ways in which we might approach the concept. Tom has been working with his own version of Parts Work for a decade now, so has an interest in shedding some light on the topic. You may have heard us talk about interrupting coachees on previous podcasts, but we see and hear so much from other coaches talking about this topic online that we thought we'd set our stall out in a more thorough and robust way. We have also noticed an increase in very visible coaches rebadging interrupting as interjecting, and saying that it's ok, even necessary. So, we thought we'd talk through what we see as the subtle differences between interrupting and interjecting and share our perspectives in this dedicated episode on the topic. In this episode, not only do we discuss interruptions and interjections, and the difference between the two, you will also get to hear a couple of Tom's 'dad jokes', and bear witness to a couple of his incredible animal impersonations (although, actually, there are no bears). We could apologise for the extensive presence of laughter in this episode, but we won't, because as we have said before, we take coaching seriously, and ourselves less so. Enjoy the podcast? We believe that one of the most important aspects of coaching is the generation of new thinking on the part of the coachee. Before we get to focusing on the options that the coachee has, or how they might forward, we need to explore their situation with them and allow them to assess it in an objective and coherent way. In order to do that we will probably need to challenge the client to engage in some some critical thinking around the thoughts they have already had, what the reality of their situation is, and the viability of all of the options they have available to them. Only then is it going to be useful for the coachee to decide on a way forward. In this episode we explore the topic of Critical Thinking in the coaching room and give some thought as to how we might best facilitate the coachee engaging with this particular thought process. Not all change is created equal. Some change is easy and some is hard. All qualified coaches should be well equipped to support coachees when they are contemplating easy change. When it comes to hard change, coaches adopting straightforward coaching approaches might not cope so well with facilitating this change for coaches who are finding change more of a struggle. What makes the difference between easy change and hard change is going to depend from coachee to coachee and we have to be agile when approaching the coaching room and what the coachee brings. Sometimes, we won't know in the first session that hard change is going to be hard. It may not become apparent until a few sessions down the line, so we have to be ready for that and curious about how we might support the coachee through their difficulty with the change. In this episode, we explore the differences between easy change and hard change and the power of coaching in facilitating both.
