Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!! This week we are starting a brand new theme of "art theft" films starting with the very insteresting American Animals (2018) This movie was extremely intersting especially because it was based on a real art heist perpetrated by a group of college students in Lexington Kentucky. I gave this film a 7.5/10 for successfully combining the documentary and drama genres together to create a realistic and fair portrayal of what heists and other crimes are like wh...
Welcome back to the Film Haven Movie Club! This week Macy and Emily join me again to talk about the new unique musical The Testament of Ann Lee (2025) This is a fun episode because we had varying opinons on this film so we didn't all agree! In the episode we discuss the uneven pacing, strange instrumental choices, as well as praise the choreography, the subject matter, and the amazing performance by Amanda Seyfreid. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: h...
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are finishing up our "Inner World Surrealism" theme with the trippy and dreamy film Waking Life (2001) This film is hyper unique and uses rotoscope technology so has a very other wordly feel which is perfect for the theme and it also brings in a lot of insights about life which are fun to chew on. I gave this film a 7/10 for providing an intriguing experience while also going overlong and becoming a bit contrived and repetitive by the...
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are continuing our "Inner World Surrealism" theme with the crazy sci-fi/true crime/horror film The Cell (2000)! The Cell was certainly unique and had a great visual style, but it was also messy and the acting left some to be desired. I gave this film a 7.5/10 because the visual style was so unique and striking, but the lack of synergy between the disparate parts of the film make it hard for this film to get above the 8/10 range. I still...
Welcome back to another episode of Film Haven Movie Club!!! This week I sit down with Macy and Emily to discuss our recent vewing of the Josh Safdie film Marty Supreme (2025) We really enjoyed this movie, especially its authenticity and Timothee Chalomet's performance! In the ep, we talk about Marty Supreme's character and whether he learned his lesson or not, and we also discuss the making of the film and the craft behind bringing 1950s NYC to life and how hard it was to film Table Tennis ...
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are finally starting a brand new theme of "inner world surrealism" with the very surreal film The Fall (2006). This was such a fun but emotionally enriching film, I had such a good (and heart wrenching time) with this. It's one of those films I want to recommend to everyone because it was so impactful to me, but be warned: get ready to cry. I gave this film an 8.5/10 for the insanse visuals, the perfect acting, and the incredible story ...
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are taking another break from our theme'd episodes to talk about this special holiday horror slasher Silent Night Deadly Night (2025). This was a really fun watch! Don't go in thinking its high class, because its a b-movie through and through, but if you like slasher film's and midnight matinee type features, you are going to come out of this film satisfied. I gave this movie a 7.5/10 for some really great practical effects, a really cool c...
Welcome back to Film Haven Reivews!! This week is VERY special because we are starting a whole new segment on the podcast called "Movie Club" where I bring on two of my closest friends (Macy and Emily) to talk about some of the movies we see, usually in Oscar Season preparation!! This week we are starting off with the EXCELLENT Chloe Zhao film Hamnet (2025) which we all scored highly (two 9s and a 10/10!). We loved the layered conceptual story about grief and how it effects everyone dif...
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are sadly concluding out "John Woo Gun Fu: Origins" theme with the highly rated The Killer (1989). Chow Yun-Fat is at it again and this film feels like a good balance between the story focused A Better Tomorrow (1986) and the action blowout Hard Boiled (1992). There are certainly some great (and even legendary) action secquences in this film, but you also care alot more for the characters' motivations and, importantly, what happens to them ...
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!! This week we are continuing our John Woo Gun Fu: Origins theme with the classic action extravaganza Hard Boiled (1992). This movie was just as action packed as I expected and maybe even more so. I watched this movie with my buddy Landon and we were blown away by the pure volume of action set peices and crazy choreography that was pulled off in this film. I gave this an 8.5/10 for delivering a decent story, incredible action, and some great wacky mo...
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are starting a brand new theme of "John Woo Gun Fu: Origins" with the mega famous and culturally impactful A Better Tomorrow (1986). This film is massively important to Hong Kong cinema and I had no idea before watching it but I can totally see why now! Its got high drama, effective characters, and amazing action. What's not to like??? I gave this an 8.5/10 for everything I just described plus the incredible score and cinematography. Wo...
Welcome back to this VERY special episode of Film Haven Reviews!! This week we are discussing Guillerlmo Del Toro's newest adaptation of Frankenstein (2025)!! We are also being joined by an incredibly special guest; my buddy Geoff Bretches who knows all things Gothic AND Occult which comes in handy when talking about this story that is so rooted in both! This is one of those novels that really changed my entire experience with Gothic Literature and so every adapation lends itself to inc...
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are finishing up our "30s Mad Scientist" theme with the iconic Claude Rains vehicle The Invisible Man (1933)! I was very impressed by this film's mostly faithful adaptation of the book and I of course enjoyed all of the pre-CGI visual effects they used to make all the invisibility scenes look effective and real. I gave this film an 8.5/10 for its great sets, incredbile acting, and for adapting the story in a way that captured HG Wells' esse...
Welcome back to Film Haven Reveiws!!! This week we are continuing our "30's Mad Scientist" theme with the incredibly fun Doctor X (1932)! I thought Doctor X was going to be a copy of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde but I was pleasantly surprised to find it to be a fairly unique Serial Killer Sci-Fi Whodunnit where Doctor X is husing experiments to find out who the killer is. I gave this film a 7.5/10 for being pretty uneven in terms of quality but having highers highs than its lowest lows. At the end...
Welcome back to Film Haven Reveiws!!! This week we are starting a brand new exciting "30's Mad Scientist" theme with the timeless classic Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1932). This film was firing on ALL cylinders, beautifully adapting the source material, creating impressive practical sets, acting so good that Frederic March won an oscar, and cinematography so creative that most DPs today WISH they could immitate. I gave this film a 9/10 for all of the above and I cannot recommend it enoug...
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!! This week we are closing out our "Invasion Horror" theme with the Tobe Hooper big budget flop Lifeforce (1985) This film was both better than I was expecting and also still middling in various ways. However, taking a look at each individual peice of the movie I found myself enjoying each part while maybe feeling like the ultimate product turned out to be derivative. I gave this film a 7/10 for a unique concept, great practical effects and set design, but...
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are continuing out "Invasion Horror" theme with the most famous alien invasion film of them all! Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978). While this movie had lots to say about the politics and societal thinking of its time, I was slightly disappointed by the dragging nature of the narrative compared to the original. It has some great performances and some awesome moments, but I gave this film a 7.5/10 for not quite living up to the ori...
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!! This week we are starting a brand new "Invasion Horror" theme with the 1988 CLASSIC remake of The Blob! I knew this movie was going to be fun but it still exceeded my expectations. Its a perfect small town america b-movie and has all the fun tropes you'd expect while also adding some twists and turns to them. I gave this movie an 8/10 for being well paced, funny, and filled with incredible practical effects!! For my full written revie...

Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are finishing up our "Ritual Horror" theme with the very independent feeling film The Surrender (2025). This film was frankly a bit of a disappointment. It fit the theme perfectly but came off as a worse version of the other two films in our recent weeks. I gave this film a 6.5/10 for some rough acting, amateur feeling script, but an all around competent showing especially for a first time writer/director. If you are looking for horror, I w...
