Sam Parr built one of the most influential media companies of the last decade, but the path there was anything but clean. Before selling The Hustle to HubSpot, Sam was getting arrested, struggling with alcohol abuse, and bouncing between odd jobs- from running a hot dog stand in Nashville to chasing a job at Airbnb that fell apart after a lie caught up to him. This conversation traces the full arc. From Division I track athlete to dropout. From drunk and directionless to building a media empire. From rock bottom to getting sober through a San Francisco clinic that changed his life. We get into: The real math behind building and selling The Hustle Why owning an email list beats chasing algorithms The psychology of fear, networking, and taking swings How Hampton became a $15K/year network for elite founders What addiction actually looked like — and how he got out This is a story about obsession, proximity, risk, and rebuilding — not just once, but multiple times. Oz Pearlman is one of the most recognized mentalists in the world—but behind the “mind-reading” is something much deeper. In this episode, we go beyond the tricks. We talk about marathon psychology, the obsession it takes to shave minutes off your time, and the mindset required to win—whether it’s on the course, on stage, or in life. Oz opens up about his upbringing, hustling through college, and building a career from nothing—performing magic in restaurants, learning human psychology, and turning rejection into opportunity. He breaks down how he reads people, builds relationships, and creates moments that feel impossible. We also dive into connecting with people the right way, why most people approach it wrong, and how giving value first changes everything. This is a conversation about discipline, obsession, and mastering your craft—whatever it is. Steve Weatherford: From Super Bowl Champion to Rock Bottom, Addiction, and Redemption Ken sits down with Super Bowl–champion punter Steve Weatherford for a conversation about identity, rejection, addiction, and what happens when success doesn’t fix anything. Steve shares his journey from a driven, insecure kid chasing approval through sports to becoming one of the best in the world—earning a scholarship to Illinois, grinding through the NFL as an undrafted player, getting cut multiple times, and eventually winning a Super Bowl with the New York Giants. But even at the top, with money, recognition, and a $13M contract, he found himself empty and searching for more. He opens up about the parts of his life most people never see: childhood trauma, ADHD and rejection, sexual abuse, and the early roots of addiction. That pain followed him into adulthood—fueling porn addiction, painkiller use, infidelity, and a double life that nearly cost him everything, including his marriage and his life. Steve recounts the brutal reality of getting cut in the NFL, losing his identity, and hitting rock bottom—culminating in isolation, depression, and suicidal thoughts. What followed was a long, uncomfortable process of confronting his past, rebuilding his identity, and redefining what success actually means. This is a conversation about chasing validation, the dark side of achievement, and the realization that winning doesn’t always feel like winning. It’s also about rebuilding—faith, family, fatherhood, and learning to live with purpose instead of proving something. Tyler Ramsey is a mixed media artist whose work lives somewhere between chaos and clarity—but his story is even more extreme than his art. Before the galleries, collaborations, and global recognition, Tyler was deep in addiction—alcohol, pills, and a lifestyle that nearly destroyed everything. While producing reality TV shows like Survivor and Fear Factor, his life spiraled into a breaking point that led to a jungle disappearance, jail in Africa, and ultimately rehab. What followed wasn’t overnight change. It was years of relapse, rebuilding, and finally a complete reset—faith, service, and nearly five years of sobriety. Today, Tyler is not only a working artist with global collaborations (TOMS, Aviator Nation, Ferrari), but also someone dedicated to recovery, honesty, and purpose through his “Punk Rock Sober” mission. This is a conversation about addiction, identity, creativity, faith, and what it actually takes to rebuild your life from nothing. Bobby Rich went from East London kid to Team GB judoka, winning national titles and chasing the Olympics—only to fall short at the final hurdle. What followed wasn’t a comeback story. It was a complete reinvention. In this episode, Bobby breaks down the brutal transition from dominating as a junior to getting humbled by grown men, the mental toll of missing Beijing 2008, and the decision to walk away at his peak. He shares why he took an MMA fight on five weeks’ notice, what fighting fear actually feels like, and how mindset—not talent—separates those who last. From training with Roger Gracie to coaching David Haye, working on Guy Ritchie film sets, and building a 15-year partnership with David Beckham, Bobby rebuilt his life brick by brick—without shortcuts. This is a conversation about pressure, identity, discipline, and what happens when the dream doesn’t go your way—and you have to build something better. Tyler Gaffney did everything right. Stanford. NFL. Two Super Bowl rings. The blueprint most people chase. But behind the surface was a different story — injuries, uncertainty, getting cut, starting over, and losing the identity he built his entire life around. We talk about growing up in a tough part of San Diego, the power of environment, and how one decision can change your trajectory. Tyler breaks down the reality of the NFL — the thin margin between making it and losing it — and what it feels like when the game is taken away from you. This is a conversation about discipline, setbacks, family, and what it actually takes to rebuild your life when the thing you worked for disappears. Andrew Yang joins me for a conversation about politics, AI, entrepreneurship, and why he believed he had to run for president. We talk about what pushed him from the private sector into national politics, what he learned from meeting former presidents, and why he came away convinced that the people leading the country are not superhuman. Andrew opens up about the reality of running a presidential campaign, from building a team and raising roughly $40 million to making seven debate stages and breaking through with independent media. We also get into the deeper issues driving his campaign: collapsing trust in government, the two-party trap, insider corruption, and the very real threat AI poses to millions of jobs. Andrew explains why he’s been sounding the alarm on automation for years and why he believes the country still has not caught up to what’s coming. From there, we shift into Noble Mobile and the simple idea behind it: most Americans are getting crushed on wireless bills and barely question it. Andrew breaks down how Noble works, why phone service has become an overpriced commodity, and how reducing costs and screen time can both improve people’s lives. This is a conversation about ambition, common sense, broken systems, and trying to build something better instead of just complaining about what’s broken. This week I sat down with my editor Mishka for a raw conversation about the release of my memoir, Everything You Want Is on the Other Side of Hard. I open up about the childhood abuse and chaos that shaped me, the years I lost to addiction, and the long road back through sobriety, endurance sports, and rebuilding my life. We talk about opioid addiction, withdrawals, Subutex dependence, and the moment Vivitrol finally helped me break the cycle. We also dive into the deeper parts of my story — the mentors who changed my life, the pressure of success in finance, marriage and fatherhood, adopting my daughter from Ethiopia, and Shelby’s battle with breast cancer. This episode isn’t a victory lap. It’s an honest look at trauma, fear, discipline, and the work it takes to keep moving forward. Because the truth is simple: Everything You Want is on the Other Side of Hard. In this bonus episode I sit down with Eli Wehbe for a raw conversation about status, addiction, reinvention, and the cost of living for validation. Eli talks about growing up inp Moreno Valley, breaking into Hollywood nightlife, going from door guy to partner at Warwick, and building relationships with celebrities at the height of LA club culture. He also opens up about the partying, the public fallout that blew up his life, and the decision to disappear from social media and rebuild from scratch. What started as a reset turned into a full obsession: marathons, trail racing, 100-milers, Moab 240, and now a real shot at podiuming Arizona Monster 300. Ken and Eli get into sleep deprivation, fueling, sponsorships, social media, and the mindset it takes to compete in races most people can’t even imagine finishing. This is a conversation about image versus reality, losing the identity you built, and finding something real on the other side of pain. Daniel Dart is the founder of Time Again, but before music, before venture capital, before MIT, he was homeless, gang-affiliated, and sentenced to decades in prison on kidnapping and carjacking-related charges. After fighting his case on appeal and earning a reduced sentence, Daniel rebuilt from nothing — working housekeeping jobs, getting sober, and deliberately surrounding himself with “winners.” That path led him into international development, work connected to the World Bank and the Bezos Family Foundation, two master’s degrees at the London School of Economics (without traditional prerequisites), and an MBA at MIT. Today he runs Rock Yard Ventures, invests in critical and foundational industries, and is pursuing a California governor’s pardon. This is a conversation about prison politics, systemic failure, stigma, merit, second chances, and what it actually takes to rebuild a life from the ground up. John “Johnny Bart” Bartolomeo served nearly 27 years of a 35-year federal sentence after tracking down and killing a rival gang member — a decision that would define the next 10,000 days of his life. In this raw and unfiltered conversation, Johnny walks through his upbringing in East Boston, joining the Hells Angels, the violence that led to his arrest, and the reality of serving decades inside some of America’s toughest federal prisons. From Con Air transfers and Leavenworth politics to solitary confinement, COVID lockdowns, paranoia, marriage behind bars, and suicidal thoughts — he shares what it actually takes to survive that long. But this isn’t just a prison story. It’s about what happens when the rage burns out. When the ego collapses. When a man decides to change. Today, Johnny works in recovery, advocates for second chances, and lives by a simple mantra that carried him through 10,000 days inside: “Just hold on for one more day.” Subscribe / listen on all platforms: https://lnk.to/the-other-side-of-hard  Thank you to our sponsors Ketone-IQ: ketone.com/rideout Code “RIDEOUT” Rho Nutrition: https://rhonutrition.com Code "RIDEOUT" Chapters (00:00) Welcome and Redemption (01:24) Surviving COVID Lockdown (06:29) From East Boston to Hell's Angels (10:22) How He Joined the Club (15:54) The Killing and Manhunt (22:43) Caught by the Feds (25:39) The 35 Year Plea Deal (31:51) No Bail and Pretrial Jail (36:57) Sentencing Speech and Transfers (41:39) Con Air to Leavenworth (42:11) Shackles and Black Box (43:09) Bathroom Break Reality (44:10) Con Air Rules and Marshals (45:07) Panic Attacks in Transit (46:55) Oklahoma City Transfer Shock (49:38) Leavenworth Boston Crew (50:19) Prison Racial Politics (55:08) Leavenworth Daily Tension (56:21) Chow Hall Table Standoff (01:03:23) From Leavenworth to Lows (01:05:53) Cell Move Threat Backfires (01:08:08) Beating the DHO Case (01:10:06) Prison Love and Marriage (01:14:36) Email Kiosks and Furlough Talk (01:15:54) Inmate Van Walkout (01:18:01) Rapport Over Rules (01:18:31) Transfer Furlough Explained (01:20:57) Wife Pickup And Freedom (01:22:29) Paranoia And Prison Politics (01:26:54) Hotel Visits And SHU (01:30:23) First Step Act Breakthrough (01:34:10) Drug Program And Staff Allies (01:39:45) Release And Reentry Support (01:42:04) 27 Straight Brand Origin (01:43:25) Bean Shooter And Social Media (01:45:07) Covering Club Tattoos (01:46:05) Final Message Learn more about your ad choices. Nick Bare has built his life in public. He announces the goal before he’s ready. He signs up for the race that might break him. He puts the business on the line and accepts the pressure that comes with it. This episode isn’t about highlight reels. It’s about what happens when discipline meets doubt. Nick talks about building BPN from a college apartment while serving as an Army infantry officer, surviving Ranger School, nearly running out of cash in the early years, stepping down as CEO from burnout, and eventually coming back to lead with more clarity and humility. We get into Leadville breaking him, the marathon that felt effortless, and why he believes most people sabotage themselves by “majoring in the minors.” But the real shift came when achievement stopped delivering peace — and faith reframed how he sees success, marriage, fatherhood, and leadership. At its core, this conversation is about overcoming ego, pressure, and the constant pull of “what’s next.” It’s about becoming the kind of person who doesn’t negotiate when things get hard. Dan LaMorte is a New York City stand-up comedian and ultra runner who has lived more lives by 31 than most people do in a lifetime. He started comedy at 19 after a career-ending college baseball injury. By 23, he was one of the youngest comics ever passed at the Comedy Cellar — and weighed 354 pounds. In this conversation, Dan opens up about growing up on the spectrum, battling addiction, blowing out his elbow, ballooning in weight, and the moment two car crashes and a fatty liver diagnosis forced him to change everything. He shares how running replaced drugs, how obsession can be both a curse and a superpower, and what it was like to collapse at mile 60 of a 100-mile race with chest and jaw pain — later waking up in the ICU. We also talk about relapse, divorce, grief, rebuilding after public backlash, and why he’s now moving to Leadville to chase one of the hardest races in the world. This episode isn’t about perfect discipline. It’s about resilience, identity, and what happens when you refuse to quit — even when life keeps knocking you down. Truett Hanes is the kind of athlete who makes people uncomfortable, not because he’s loud, but because he’s willing to commit in public. He says the goal out loud. He posts the work. He shows the misses. And he keeps moving anyway. This episode isn’t about a highlight reel. It’s about the part most people avoid: what happens when you swing big and come up short, in front of everyone. Truett talks about learning humility the hard way, taking the hit, and choosing to return to the work instead of protecting his image. We also get into the stuff that reveals who he is when nobody’s clapping: why he runs races in jeans, how he’s used that attention to support a mission bigger than himself, and how he tries to respond to hate without becoming the same thing he’s fighting. Then we zoom out. The real thread running through all of it is simple: Truett is obsessed with one question: “What am I actually capable of if I stop negotiating with myself?” That question is taking him into the deep end of marathon training, and it’s the same question that’s shaped his whole life: discipline, faith, restraint, and a willingness to be the underdog as long as it takes. Zac Clark’s childhood was stable. Good parents. Sports. School. No obvious “reason” for what came next — which is exactly why his story matters. In his mid-20s, Zac had brain surgery. The surgery worked. But he left the hospital with a raging opioid addiction — and it escalated fast. Pills turned into powder. Powder turned into a needle. And eventually, a missing person report, an arrest, and one moment inside a bank that forced everything into the light. Zac got sober on August 30, 2011. He stayed in treatment for four and a half months, moved to New York City, and started over from the bottom of the behavioral health world — one day at a time. Years later, he built Release Recovery, a sober living and treatment operation that now spans multiple locations and helps people who feel out of options. We also talk about the unexpected curveball: The Bachelorette, sudden visibility, and why the real work starts after the camera turns off. And how running became a tool for discipline, community, and staying alive. Walker Hayes wasn’t an “overnight success.” He was a songwriter for two decades. A dad of six. Clocking in at Costco at 4AM. Drinking. Burning out. Still writing anyway. In this episode, Walker talks about what it really looked like before “Fancy Like” — the years where bagels felt like a luxury, security felt like a trap, and quitting felt like the responsible move. Then we go to the hardest day of his life: losing his daughter Oakley on the same day he was supposed to perform on TV — and watching his wife fight to survive. Walker tells the truth about grief, rage, and the moment he realized he was about to make it worse. This is a conversation about sobriety, purpose, family, and what success does and doesn’t fix. This week I sit down with Dr. Kristen Holmes — scientist, former elite athlete, coach, and the Global Head of Human Performance at WHOOP. Kristen built her life around performance early. Sports became structure. Discipline became safety. Achievement became identity. But long before the titles and credentials, she was learning how to survive instability, neglect, and trauma — and carrying that nervous system into adulthood. We talk about what high achievement can hide. How drive is often born from pain. And how never asking for help eventually catches up to you. Kristen shares the unglamorous work that came later: therapy, forgiveness, rebuilding identity, and learning how to live with peace without losing her edge. We also get into sleep, recovery, alcohol, HRV, and why the nervous system never lies — plus how those lessons now shape her work with elite athletes, teams, and everyday people trying to function better in a demanding world. This episode isn’t about optimization.  It’s about alignment.  And what it actually costs to earn it. Bill Shufelt, CEO and co-founder of Athletic Brewing Company, shares the remarkable journey from high-intensity finance to building the world’s leading non-alcoholic beer brand. In this conversation, Ken Rideout and Bill go deep on the real story behind Athletic: Bill’s personal struggle with alcohol, the moment sobriety changed everything, and the “missionary vs. mercenary” mindset that kept him committed to impact over exits. Bill breaks down what it actually took to get Athletic off the ground—raising early capital through relentless rejection, building breweries from scratch to protect quality, and scaling through multiple economic cycles. They also touch on fitness, endurance, family support, and why younger generations are changing the future of drinking faster than most people realize. Ran Carthon has lived football from every angle — from undrafted NFL running back fighting to stay on rosters, to working his way through scouting and personnel, to eventually becoming General Manager of the Tennessee Titans. In this conversation, Ken Rideout goes beyond wins and losses to explore the human side of the NFL: pressure, family sacrifice, leadership, and what it really takes to earn trust inside an organization. Ran reflects on his upbringing as a military kid, finding home in Key West, and the lessons passed down from his father’s long NFL playing and coaching career. He shares the reality of being undrafted, the intensity of being coached by his own father, the behind-the-scenes grind of front office life, and what true collaboration actually looks like inside winning teams. Ran also opens up about being let go publicly — and how he rebuilt his mindset around peace, joy, and purpose beyond the job. John Joseph grew up in extreme violence, neglect, and instability. Raised by a violent, alcoholic father, he spent years in abusive foster homes, experienced homelessness on the streets of New York City as a teenager, battled addiction, and cycled through incarceration and institutional lock-ups at a young age. By every conventional measure, his life was headed toward an early end. This episode traces John’s journey through that chaos—and the single principle that allowed him to survive it: discipline. From punk rock and life on the streets, to sobriety, plant-based living, endurance sports, and completing multiple Ironman triathlons, John rebuilt his life one deliberate decision at a time. We talk about breaking cycles of abuse and addiction, replacing self-destruction with structure, and why discipline—not motivation—is the foundation for lasting change. This is a conversation about accountability, resilience, and what it actually takes to turn suffering into strength when there’s no safety net and no one coming to save you.
