Welcome to Open Tabs! Tappy's whole new personality is the gay hockey show, government name, Heated Rivalry: the Crave Canada production airing in America and beyond on HBO. We talk about how it came to be, what it started out as (hint - it MIGHT just have been fanfiction) and why its so fucking good. Heads up! This episode may contain spoilers for the first three episodes of Heated Rivarly. If you have any questions, comments, or fic recommendations you can drop us a line at opentabscast@gmail.com or if you'd like to support our silly little podcast you can check us out at over at Patreon! www.patreon.com/OpenTabsCast This podcast and this episode cover adult themes and discuss explicit content: listener discretion is advised.
Welcome to Open Tabs! IT'S THE OMEGAVERSE EPISODE - we've been promising and like a bunch of weird looking storks, we're delivering! And to make things ever more fun we've brought on our friend Shivam, you might know him from his work in the Magic the Gathering community, with the Dragonlace folks or his religious essays - He's been a big ol' nerd longer than any of us and today we find out if he can hang with the weird stuff. (Spoiler alert... he ABSOLUTELY can!) You can find Shivam here (https://bsky.app/profile/shivambhatt.bsky.social) on blusky and here are some of his myriad projects: https://www.youtube.com/@casualmagicwithshivambhatt  https://sites.libsyn.com/460224 If you have any questions, comments, or fic recommendations you can drop us a line at opentabscast@gmail.com or if you'd like to support our silly little podcast you can check us out at over at Patreon! www.patreon.com/OpenTabsCast This podcast and this episode cover adult themes and discuss explicit content: listener discretion is advised.
Welcome to Open Tabs! THE KIDS ARE NOT OKAY and we talk about that again, in addition to some card game updates, the fanfiction implications of smashing different IP together for (sometimes) fun and (mostly) profit. If you'd like to support our silly little podcast you can check us out at over at Patreon! www.patreon.com/OpenTabsCast This podcast and this episode cover adult themes and discuss explicit content: listener discretion is advised.
Welcome to Open Tabs! Post Magic Con Atlanta and just in time for Halloween. We talk about the usual stuff: kinktober, strange horror media takes and gear up for Comment-ember (start's tomorrow folks!) What is this a BONUS episode? KINDA! We've got a special event planned that we hope y'all will be excited to participate in and help us spread some love to the community creatives across fandom who give us all so much. TIME TO GIVE BACK, BITCHES! Here are the details as well as a link to the OPEN & FREE Patreon post that also contains all our art and visual files of the event description and rules if you'd like to share them around. What is Comment-ember? Readers and fans of fanworks: we're stoking some embers under your butts this month and throwing down a gauntlet! Fanfic authors and fanwork creators give so much to their communities and we here at Open Tabs think it's high time we make a concerted effort to give back. Comments and positive community interaction are down across the board and we think that fucking sucks - Let's get those rookie numbers back up into respectable territory (it'll probably be the only thing respectable we do with this podcast.) This is Comment-ember! Rules: The goal is to leave one comment per day throughout the month - if you miss a day, you can do a few catch-ups but try your best to stay on it! We're trying to help you build a habit here so you comment more the rest of the year too. The content of your comments should be respectful and complimentary: NOT critiques or criticism (example: "I love the way you wrote Steve from Minecraft in this fic!" is great! "I don't think Steve from Minecraft would actually do this because of XYZ from the actual game" is not.) Comments should be engaging and encouraging: NOT pressuring the author to continue or asking when the next update will be (example: "This was so good! I wonder what will happen next. I'll be patiently waiting for the next update :)" is totally okay but "Omg it's been a month since the last chapter, when is the next update???" is not.) If we find out anyone is using AI to write comments we will be so disappointed in you. You are a void of whimsy and you will never know the light and comfort of true fandom bliss. You bring shame upon your entire bloodline. One comment might qualify for multiple day's prompts but each day's prompt requires a new comment. By the end of the month you should have written 30 comments. Comments are not limited to works posted on AO3 but if you need to make an AO3 account to comment on a fic (some fics have guest commenting disabled) we can do our best to help you get an invite code from another community member! Please reach out. Comments can be made on fics/works you've read or interacted with previously. This would be a LOT of reading otherwise! You can definitely leave multiple comments for this event on different chapters of one fic or for the same author/creator but do try to spread the love. You do not need to read the entire work in the case of longer/multi-chapter works for your comment to "count" - but you had better read enough to leave a thoughtful, relevant comment. If the prompt is vague or you're not sure if a work qualifies for it, follow your heart! Close enough is good enough - Just WRITE THAT COMMENT. There will be prizes for participants, completionists and high-scorers! If you'd like to be scored, we'll have a google form for you to fill out with some info (how many comments you made, what prompt you liked best, some of your favorite comments of the month, links to works you commented on etc) but it will still largely be honor-system based. Don't be the dick that ruins this! There is NO penalty if you miss a day or for starting and not completing the challenge. We're all just trying our best and it's good to have a lofty goal set. Five comments is way better than NONE comments. Please share this idea and our prompt list wherever you'd like! You can totally use it even if you've never listened to our dumb podcast or give a shit about us - we're only asking that you go out and give a shit about the creatives that are making the stuff you love <3 Please feel free to ask us any questions while you're here! Also the text images are the same information contained here in this blog post, just in a more share-able or downloadable way for as easy access as possible <3 GO MAKE SOME CREATIVE'S DAY! (Speak of thanking creatives: Huge shout out to Mizu Shiba for the fantastic design work on our calendar card. You can find more of their work here: https://mizushiba.carrd.co/ )
Welcome to Open Tabs! A potpourri episode - we stole Amy mid-twitch-subathon (at time of recording) so she could take a break and talk about fanfiction, Pacific Rim and an exciting new Open Tabs-sponsored event that's going to be taking place in cyber-space very soon, right near you! If you'd like to check out the Pacific Rim youtube video essay we reference please check it out (as well as the rest of LadyKnighttheBrave's incredible work) here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sud3KX_6zoM&t=4379s You can also check out the other project we mentioned, Song vs. Song, on Todd in the Shadows's youtube channel or whever you prefer to get your podcasts! Welcome to Open Tabs! Amy's back this week and we're covering all sorts of stuff in the lead up to Magic Con Atlanta (even though this episode is dropping to your earholes right AFTER) including the some very hot (or not) takes on denim and how its advertised. We're also doing a mailbag episode to celebrate our totally-normal-little podcast turning one year old in December: If you'd like to ask us a question or leave us a comment to be read on the cast please send us an email @ opentabs@gmail.com and include MAILBAG somewhere obvious in the subject line! If you'd like to support our silly little podcast you can check us out at over at Patreon! www.patreon.com/OpenTabsCast This podcast and this episode cover adult themes and discuss explicit content: listener discretion is advised.
Welcome to Open Tabs! This week we give Amy a break this week to recover and (at time of recording) prep for her sub-a-thon over on twitch. We talk about Princess's recent trip to Anime NYC, the panel she did there, the cool stuff she bought from some artists and the all the related rants about capitalism and community building in fandom spaces! Plus, as a housekeeping note, we've added a little audio tone before and after the Editing Tappy notes to make them more clear - let us know what you think. If you'd like to take a quick gander at the video on Albanian Sworn Virgins I mentioned, you can find it over here on Youtube: "The last 'sworn virgins' of Albania - BBC News" Mar 12, 2023, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJQPbMraGFE If you'd like to support our silly little podcast you can check us out at over at Patreon! www.patreon.com/OpenTabsCast This podcast and this episode cover adult themes and discuss explicit content: listener discretion is advised.
Welcome to Open Tabs! Today's episode starts with the new batch of 2025 AO3 ship statistics from community darling, centreoftheselights. We talk about the good and the bad and then Sydney does (a few) rants she's been wanting to get off her chest for a while - and splash around in the shallow end of data science and stat analysis. Its not nearly as scary as it sounds! If you'd like to support our silly little podcast you can check us out at over at Patreon! www.patreon.com/OpenTabsCast This podcast and this episode cover adult themes and discuss explicit content: listener discretion is advised.
Welcome to Open Tabs! We've got an episode we recorded awhile ago and stashed away for a rainy day - and since half of Tappy's town almost got rained out with record flooding, it seems like exactly the time. If you'd like to support our silly little podcast you can check us out at over at Patreon! www.patreon.com/OpenTabsCast This podcast and this episode cover adult themes and discuss explicit content: listener discretion is advised.
Welcome to Open Tabs! On today's episode we discuss our favorite website's occasional boughts of down time. We all need it, but does AO3 go down sometimes? More specifically, why did it go down THIS time? Also the KPOP Demon Hunters episode because we weren't going to tell Princess she couldn't talk about it - what the hell else is a podcast for? If you'd like to support out silly little podcast you can check us out at over at Patreon! www.patreon.com/OpenTabsCast
Welcome to Open Tabs! On today's episode we discuss some of the movie adaptations of written works that were originally (maybe allegedly) adapted from fanfictions. The beautiful Balkan nation of Albania features heavily. There's a reasonable segue we promise. Also Sydney finally has a mic that doesn't predate the fall of Rome! If you'd like to support out silly little podcast you can check us out at over at Patreon! www.patreon.com/OpenTabsCast This podcast and this episode cover adult themes and discuss explicit content: listener discretion is advised.
Welcome to Open Tabs! We had to talk about the black mold in the castle one day: We're covering Harry Potter Fanfiction and the she-who-should-be-ignored who wrote it and uses its continued, metastasized presence in fan culture spaces to justify her bigotry. BUT we've got a bright side to this episode's shit-stain of a topic: We brought Bugs back to help us talk through it! If you'd like to support out silly little podcast you can check us out at over at Patreon! www.patreon.com/OpenTabsCast This podcast and this episode cover adult themes and discuss explicit content: listener discretion is advised.
Welcome to Open Tabs! AO3 got scraped for AI training: What happened, why is this bad,  what can we do about it and will hammers be involved? We're bringing on one of our favorite silly little guys from the internet to join Sydney and Amy as we discuss some of our LEAST favorite stupid little guys from the internet and their even dumber ideas. If you'd like to support out silly little podcast you can check us out at over at Patreon! www.patreon.com/OpenTabsCast This podcast and this episode cover adult themes and discuss explicit content: listener discretion is advised.
Welcome to Open Tabs! Today we're tackling censorship as it relates to fandom and how it is and has affected internet spaces throughout our tormented millennial tenure in cyberspace. We just wanna enjoy our weirdo shit in piece. We're tired, are you tired? So for some well deserved dopamine we open up the podcast mailbag and discuss your lovely comments and questions from our first 10 episodes! We also have a very exciting announcement to make: You can now support the podcast on Patreon and help us grow our little community including... drumroll please our very own cool fanfiction discord! www.patreon.com/OpenTabsCast This podcast and this episode cover adult themes and discuss explicit content: listener discretion is advised.
Welcome to Open Tabs! We've got another episode from the cache for you this week - we're talking about purity culture and how this strange backslide is affecting fandom spaces. What's up with the this shift in the way folks interact with liscened and fan media and each other? We don't have all the answers but we certainly have some loud opinions (and less some very important opinions about the philosophy and fine craft of good chicken wings.) This podcast and this episode cover adult themes and discuss explicit content: listener discretion is advised.
Welcome to Open Tabs! This weeks episode is another from the archived recordings. The crew sets out to discuss the epilogue of My Hero Academia and proceeds to rate of all of shounen anime to filth - except for Yu Yu Hakusho - that one's almost perfect. This podcast and this episode cover adult themes and discuss explicit content: listener discretion is advised.
Welcome to Open Tabs! We've got our first special guest of the podcast: Sydney's long-term (long-suffering) bestie SKS-Ninja. She's here to talk about all things podfics, Legend of Zelda and a whole lot of the kind of lore drops you only get from a friendship that involves lots of fucked up, shared fandom history. This podcast and this episode cover adult themes and discuss explicit content: listener discretion is advised.
Welcome to Open Tabs! On today's episode we talk writing challenges: from NaNoWriMo to Kinktober, then get promptly side-tracked and dig into the history of the Hoover Dam. Y'know, the usual stuff! This podcast and this episode cover adult themes and discuss explicit content: listener discretion is advised.
Welcome to Open Tabs! On today's episode we discuss the ban (and near-immediate unban) of Tiktok in January 2025 - along with all the ways the young and old are interacting with fanfiction and fandom on this strange, short-form space. HEADS UP! Because of the context surrounding the ban/unban of Tiktok this episode delves more into recent American politcs than normal. If that's something you can't or don't want to handle right now, we absolutely understand. If you're as angry as we are and looking to spend your bandwidth on something construction, I (Sydney) recommend contacting your local branch of the DSA or checking out the resource guide over here by Individsible Action as a starting point for more good trouble you can get into. This podcast and this episode cover adult themes and discuss explicit content: listener discretion is advised.
