This episode demystifies why the “bicarb” on a BMP never quite matches the bicarbonate on a blood gas. We explain how CO₂ exists in three forms (dissolved CO₂, carbonic acid, and bicarbonate), why blood gases calculate bicarbonate using pH and PCO₂ via Henderson–Hasselbalch, and how BMPs instead chemically measure total CO₂ after converting bicarbonate and carbonic acid to gas.
