Welcome back to The Plant Healer's Path — Episode 20. In this episode, Jesse Wolf Hardin explores one of the deepest inner tensions faced by healers, activists, caregivers, and culture-shapers alike: the longing to create real, visible change — and the emotional weight of what we cannot control. Through poetic reflection and grounded wisdom, Wolf speaks to the outcome-oriented heart that lives inside so many of us — especially herbalists, healthcare providers, parents, justice workers, and environmental advocates. He explores our shared desire to relieve suffering, to fix what is broken, to bring about lasting cures and total solutions — and the quiet harm that can arise when we measure our worth solely by what we can "successfully" change. You'll hear why it's both beautiful and perilous to carry the world's pain on our shoulders, how unrealistic expectations can quietly drain our vitality, and why a truly sustainable healing practice depends on learning the difference between what we can influence and what we must release. Wolf offers a compassionate framework for shifting from impossible cures toward meaningful, tangible, day-to-day impact — without abandoning our deeper ideals. If you've ever felt discouraged by outcomes you couldn't control, burned out by constant striving, or torn between big visions and personal limits, this episode offers a powerful reminder: your small, steady, real-world efforts matter more than you may realize. Join legendary clinical herbalist Paul Bergner in an intimate, living-room conversation on herbalism as a calling, not just a career. With over 50 years of hands-on clinical practice, teaching, and mentorship, Paul shares rare insight into what truly shapes a great herbalist—diet, sleep, case-based learning, critical thinking, and deep relationship with plants. In this wide-ranging monologue, Paul reflects on: His early work in prisons and community clinics Why follow-ups matter more than textbooks How herbalists are really trained The role of "calling" in healing work Why the future of herbalism is becoming simpler, not more complex This is a masterclass in lived experience from one of the most influential medical herbalists of our time. Welcome back to The Plant Healer's Path. In this episode, Jesse Wolf Hardin explores one of the most essential — yet often misunderstood — aspects of the plant healer's journey: finding and defining your true niche. Through poetic reflection, grounded teaching, and decades of lived experience, Wolf unpacks what it really means to discover your unique role within the larger healing field. From folk herbalists and family practitioners to growers, medicine makers, teachers, clinicians, and culture builders, he illuminates how each healer carries a distinct "individual medicine" — a signature blend of talents, interests, aesthetics, convictions, and calling. You'll hear why purpose needs form to fully manifest, how specialization isn't limitation but clarification, and why a well-defined niche becomes both your home base and your vantage point for serving the world. Wolf traces the word "niche" back to its Latin root meaning "nest," inviting you to consider how your own healing work is woven from the land, the people you serve, the methods you love, and the story you tell. If you've ever felt scattered, unsure where you truly fit, or called to refine your focus without losing your heart, this episode offers a powerful framework for aligning your gifts, your audience, your role, and your deeper purpose into a coherent, living practice. Welcome back to The Plant Healer's Path. In this episode, Jesse Wolf Hardin invites you into a soulful, provocative, and deeply clarifying journey through 20 essential life questions — prompts designed to reorient you toward meaning, vitality, purpose, and the truth of who you are. Through story, metaphor, and grounded self-inquiry, Wolf explores what it really means to live deliberately: What would you do if this were your final year? What is worth your precious time, energy, devotion, and attention? What habits, obligations, or environments drain you — and which nourish your joy, creativity, and calling? Who matters most? What matters most? And what would it take to craft a life that feels wholly, unapologetically your own? If you've been craving reflection, renewal, direction, or simply a deeper connection to your authentic self, this episode serves as a powerful inner compass — a yardstick for living a life aligned with your values, your purpose, and your heart. In this clip from The Herbalist Hour, Alex Williams of First Curve Apothecary joins me for an honest, grounded conversation about what it really feels like to promote your work in the herbal world. We dive into the tension between authenticity and business, why marketing often feels gross or performative, the pressure to "sell yourself," and how herbalists can share their offerings without feeding the hype, fear, or scarcity that so often drives conventional marketing. Alex speaks candidly about learning to trust that people are "enough" as they are, navigating capitalism as a village herbalist, and finding ways to sustain a business while staying true to your values. If you've ever struggled with selling herbal products, pricing your work, or promoting yourself without feeling like you're selling your soul… this one is for you. In this very special replay of The Herbalist Hour Episode 50, I sit down with John Gallagher — co-founder of LearningHerbs and a beloved member of the herbal community who recently passed away after a long struggle with depression, anxiety, and insomnia. This episode means the world to me. If you've followed HerbRally for a while, you've probably heard me talk about how much John influenced my herbal journey. His podcast, HerbMentor Radio, was my introduction to the wider herbal world. I devoured every episode — over and over again. Through those interviews, I felt like I knew the herbalists he featured. And John was the thread running through it all — full of curiosity, warmth, humor, and a contagious laugh. Eventually I became an HerbMentor member (still am to this day), and a few years later, John actually became a friend. I'll never forget him visiting the Mountain Rose Herbs marketing department when I worked there — he brought so much joyful energy with him. And at RootStalk, the legendary one-time herbal gathering, I feel like our friendship really took root. It was also there that I learned John wasn't quite as squeaky clean off-mic as he was on his show — turns out he loved to swear, just like me! That only made me love him more. Over the years, I got to know him better through shared time at events, visits to his home in Port Townsend, chats on the phone, and eventually, this very conversation on The Herbalist Hour. Recording this episode felt like a full-circle moment. I finally got to sit down and interview someone who helped shape my path in herbalism — not just as a mentor from afar, but as a real friend. Everyone I know who knew John adored him. He lit up every room. And he gave so much to this community. My heart goes out to Kimberly, their children, his family, and everyone who loved him. John — I love you, buddy. Thank you for being there during some rough times. Thank you for your support of HerbRally. And thank you for helping open up the herbal world to me, and to so many others. You'll be deeply missed. ~Mason Prefer to watch the video version? You can find it on YouTube here | Watch on YouTube P.S. Hey friends, Mason here — recording this quick message straight from my phone while I'm packing for my big move back to Oregon. I just launched the HerbRally Survey and would love to hear from you. It's short and sweet, and your feedback helps shape the future of everything I do — from podcast episodes and YouTube videos to classes, events, and beyond. And as a thank you, when you complete the survey you'll get a beautiful free 16-page ebook from one of my besties, Rosalee de la Forêt all about St. John's Wort — packed with recipes, remedies, and deep plant wisdom. TAKE THE SURVEY HERE Thanks so much for being part of this community. I appreciate you more than you know. Much love and hopefully talk to ya soon ✌️❤️ ~Mason

so I come from the Tennessee valley, moved when I was 7 years old and vaguely remember how it was; very tribal. one thing that helped me understand what exactly was going on in regard to progressivism and the lack thereof was the fact that we all believed in the judeo Christian God very seldom would you run into pagan communities, certain versus thought to condemn certain races of men however; in judeo teaching they firmly believe we all come from one man and one woman created by God so .. if you can harp the narrative that were all of one blood you can win the hearts and minds of the rural Appalachian and inclusiveness that it brings based off of something the majority of the hill folk already believes. surely there's still folks that have never seen a person of color so naturally you fear what you do not know, the same can be said of indigenous tribes of uncolonized southern Eurasian islands they really fear Caucasians because they've never seen them other than oral traditions passed
