In this episode of Year of Profit, Joe Shortridge tackles one of the most overlooked challenges of becoming debt free: dealing with critics, opinions, and outside pressure. Getting out of debt isn't just about numbers. It's about changing your habits, your priorities, your mindset, and ultimately the way you live your life. And when you begin making those changes, you may discover that not everyone around you will understand them. Maybe you've decided to stop using credit cards. Maybe you're following a budget, eating at home more often, driving an older vehicle, skipping expensive vacations, or putting every extra dollar toward your debt. Then someone says, "You're being too extreme." Or maybe they tell you, "You only live once." Perhaps they ask why you're not buying the things everyone else seems to have. How do you respond? This episode explores the difference between constructive advice and financial noise. Not every opinion deserves a vote in your life, especially when that opinion comes from someone who isn't living the financial life you want to create. Inspired by principles often taught by Dave Ramsey, Joe discusses the importance of being willing to live differently today so you can experience greater financial freedom tomorrow. The debt-free journey requires discipline, sacrifice, patience, and the willingness to make decisions based on your goals rather than someone else's expectations. You'll also learn why knowing your "why" is so important. When you know exactly why you want to become debt free, temporary sacrifices become easier to handle. Your goal might be eliminating financial stress, providing a better future for your family, building wealth, retiring comfortably, giving more generously, or simply gaining control over your money. Joe also breaks down several different types of critics you may encounter along the way—from the well-meaning friend to the "everybody does it" person, the lifestyle critic, and even the critic inside your own head. Because sometimes the loudest voice telling you to quit isn't somebody else. It's you. The episode also explores the importance of taking ownership of your financial decisions. You don't have to blame your friends, your circumstances, the economy, or your past mistakes. You can acknowledge what happened, learn from it, and make a different decision moving forward. Most importantly, this episode is about changing your identity. Instead of saying, "I'm trying to get out of debt," start thinking of yourself as someone who is becoming financially free. Instead of saying, "I'm trying to budget," recognize that you're learning to give every dollar a purpose. Instead of seeing every sacrifice as something you're giving up, begin seeing it as something you're gaining. Freedom. Options. Peace of mind. And control over your financial future. The people who criticize your journey don't have to understand it. They don't have to agree with every decision you make. And they don't have to walk the road with you. You simply have to keep moving forward. Because eventually, your results will speak louder than your explanations. Your debt will disappear. Your savings will grow. Your financial confidence will increase. And the sacrifices that once seemed difficult may become the very things you're most grateful you did. If you're currently working toward becoming debt free, this episode is your reminder to stay focused, know your "why," listen to good advice, ignore unnecessary noise, and keep taking the next right step. Your financial freedom is worth pursuing—even when other people don't understand the journey. This is Year of Profit with Joe Shortridge. Listen. Learn. Take action. And build the financial future you want. Hosted by Joe Shortridge, The Year of Profit podcast is your ultimate destination for personal development, financial growth, and high-performance living. We wake up with it, carry it with us throughout the day, and often fall asleep while scrolling through it. But have you ever stopped to ask yourself what all that screen time is actually doing to your life? In this episode of **Year of Profit**, Joe Shortridge takes a deeper look at how social media can influence our **mindset, attention, relationships, spending habits, and financial goals**. This isn't an episode about declaring social media good or bad. Social media can be an incredible tool. It can connect us with family and friends, help businesses grow, provide education and entertainment, and give people a platform to share their stories. The question is whether we're using social media intentionally—or whether it has started using our attention for us. One of the major topics discussed is **dopamine** and the reward system behind our scrolling habits. Notifications, likes, comments, new videos, and constantly changing content can create repeated opportunities for reward and anticipation. Joe explains how this can encourage us to keep checking our phones and how constant stimulation may make activities requiring patience and sustained attention feel less appealing. The episode also explores the impact of social media on **focus and productivity**. Every notification and interruption has the potential to pull our attention away from what we're doing. Whether you're working, building a business, managing your finances, reading, exercising, or spending time with your family, protecting your attention can make a significant difference. Another major topic is **comparison**. Social media often shows us other people's highlights while we experience every part of our own lives—the successes, failures, struggles, mistakes, and ordinary days. Comparing our reality to someone else's carefully selected online moments can create unrealistic expectations and unnecessary dissatisfaction. Joe also examines the relationship between social media and **money**. Advertising is everywhere, but modern advertising doesn't always look like advertising. Influencers, lifestyle posts, product recommendations, and targeted content can make spending feel natural and even necessary. Social media can encourage us to purchase things because we want the product—but sometimes we're really purchasing the feeling associated with it. The episode asks an important financial question: **Would you still want to buy it if nobody else could see it?** That question can help us distinguish between spending that supports our goals and spending driven by comparison, impulse, or the desire for validation. Relationships are another critical part of the conversation. Being physically present with someone doesn't necessarily mean we're emotionally present. Phones at the dinner table, during conversations, or while spending time with family can quietly take attention away from the people who matter most. Joe challenges listeners to create more **phone-free moments**, protect their attention, and become intentional about how they use technology. The episode concludes with a simple seven-day challenge: spend the first 30 minutes of each morning without social media, create at least one phone-free meal each day, wait 24 hours before making impulse purchases inspired by social media, and ask yourself each night where you gave your attention. Because your attention is valuable. Your time is limited. Your relationships matter. Your money matters. And ultimately, **your life is shaped by what you repeatedly give your attention to.** The goal isn't necessarily to eliminate social media. It's to make sure **you remain in control of it**. So put down the phone occasionally. Look around. Have the conversation. Work toward your goals. Check your budget. Spend time with the people you love. Don't just watch everybody else's life happen. **Go live yours.** Hosted by Joe Shortridge, The Year of Profit podcast is your ultimate destination for personal development, financial growth, and high-performance living. Family relationships can be some of the most rewarding relationships in our lives—but they can also be complicated. Parents, siblings, adult children, spouses, and extended family can all bring expectations, opinions, responsibilities, and sometimes emotional pressure into our lives. In this episode of Year of Profit, Joe Shortridge explores one of the most important relationship skills we can develop: setting healthy family boundaries. Inspired by the principles discussed by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend in their influential book Boundaries, this episode looks at what it means to understand where our responsibility ends and someone else's begins. A boundary isn't about building a wall around yourself. It isn't about being selfish, uncaring, or pushing people away. Healthy boundaries are about understanding what belongs to you—and what belongs to someone else. Your choices belong to you. Your time belongs to you. Your money belongs to you. Your emotions and your responses belong to you. But someone else's anger, disappointment, choices, and responsibilities don't automatically become yours simply because you love them. Joe discusses why saying "no" can be so difficult, especially when it comes to family. Many of us were raised to believe that saying no is disrespectful or that good family members should always be available to help. But constantly saying yes when you really want to say no can eventually lead to exhaustion, frustration, and resentment. This episode explores the difference between helping and rescuing, particularly when family members are struggling financially or repeatedly making decisions that create problems. Sometimes helping means offering guidance, encouragement, or support. Other times, continually stepping in may prevent someone from experiencing the consequences that could help them grow. Money is another major part of family boundaries. Should you loan money to family? Should you co-sign? Should you continually rescue an adult child from financial problems? How do you protect your own financial goals while still caring about the people you love? These aren't always easy questions, but they are important ones. Joe also discusses the unique challenges between parents and adult children. Becoming an adult means eventually learning to make your own decisions—even when your parents may disagree. You can respect your parents, appreciate their wisdom, and listen to their advice without allowing someone else's expectations to control your adult life. The same principle applies to parents of adult children. Loving your children doesn't mean you have to solve every problem they encounter. Sometimes allowing people to experience the natural consequences of their decisions is part of loving them. You'll also hear practical ideas for communicating boundaries, including being clear, avoiding unnecessary over-explaining, staying consistent, and learning to accept that other people may not always like your decisions. Perhaps the most important lesson in this episode is this: You can love someone without carrying their problems. You can care without rescuing. You can help without sacrificing your future. You can say no without being a bad person. And you can establish boundaries without ending a relationship. For Year of Profit, this conversation goes far beyond relationships. True profit isn't just about earning more money. It's about creating a life that produces more peace, freedom, time, healthy relationships, and purpose. So take a look at your own life and ask yourself: What is mine to carry—and what do I need to give back? Learning the answer could be one of the most profitable things you ever do. Day Trips in the Fall: Big Benefits from Small Escapes Click here to go to our Facebook Page. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100076311491473 Click here to see joe's book. https://a.co/d/0dCzvnb9 Click here to save in My Vinted page. https://www.vinted.com/member/3159124199 What if you don't need an expensive vacation to recharge, clear your mind, reconnect with people you love, or simply feel alive again? Sometimes, all you need is a tank of gas, a free Saturday, and a willingness to take the road you don't normally take. In this episode of **The Year of Profit**, Joe Shortridge explores the surprisingly powerful benefits of taking **small escapes**, especially during one of the most beautiful seasons of the year: fall. As the leaves begin to change, the temperatures cool down, and communities come alive with festivals, farmers' markets, apple orchards, pumpkin patches, historic tours, and seasonal events, fall creates the perfect opportunity to step away from your normal routine and experience something different. And here's the important part: **you don't have to travel far or spend a lot of money to create a meaningful experience.** We often associate travel with expensive hotels, airline tickets, elaborate vacations, and weeks of planning. But a day trip can provide many of the same emotional benefits without putting a major dent in your budget. A short drive to a nearby town can become an adventure. A scenic drive can give you time to think. A visit to a local historical site can teach you something new. A walk through a park can clear your head. A meal at a restaurant you've never tried can become a memory. The destination doesn't always have to be extraordinary. Sometimes it's the experience of **getting out of your routine** that makes the difference. In this episode, Joe talks about how changing your surroundings can help interrupt the mental patterns that come from doing the same things day after day. When life becomes repetitive, it's easy to operate on autopilot. A small escape forces us to slow down, pay attention, and experience the world around us again. Day trips can also be powerful for relationships. Think about the memories you share with the people closest to you. Chances are, you don't remember every ordinary night sitting on the couch. You remember the adventures. The unexpected discoveries. The funny things that happened. The places you found together. Experiences create stories, and stories create memories. Joe also looks at the financial side of taking a break. Living a financially responsible life doesn't mean you can never enjoy yourself. In fact, learning to enjoy life without overspending is an important part of financial wellness. You don't need to put a vacation on a credit card to have an adventure. Pack a lunch. Bring some snacks. Find free attractions. Explore local parks. Visit a small town. Take a scenic drive. Set aside a modest "adventure fund" and use it intentionally. The goal isn't to spend more. The goal is to **experience more with what you already have.** The episode also explores the importance of not waiting for the "perfect time." There will always be another bill, another responsibility, another project, and another reason to postpone enjoying life. Your life is happening now. That doesn't mean ignoring your responsibilities. It means understanding that rest, fun, exploration, and meaningful experiences are also part of a successful life. So this fall, Joe challenges listeners to take a day trip. Choose a destination—or simply choose a direction. Take the scenic route. Visit somewhere you've never been. Try something new. Bring someone you care about, or enjoy the adventure by yourself. Put down the phone for a while and pay attention to the world around you. Because sometimes you don't need a week-long vacation. You don't need a plane ticket. You don't need thousands of dollars. Sometimes you just need one day to step outside your routine and remember that there is a big world waiting just beyond it. **Small escapes can create big benefits.** They can refresh your mind, strengthen your relationships, spark creativity, reduce stress, create memories, and remind you that success isn't simply about how hard you work. It's also about knowing when to stop, breathe, and enjoy the life you're working so hard to build. So grab your keys, find a road you've never explored, and make this fall a season you'll remember. **The adventure might be closer than you think.** The Year of Profit podcast, hosted by Joe Shortridge, is your go-to resource for transforming every aspect of your life. In this episode of The Year of Profit, we take a completely different look at failure. Most of us were taught from an early age that failure is something to avoid. We associate failure with embarrassment, disappointment, lost money, rejection, and sometimes even shame. But what if the people who achieve the most aren't necessarily the people who fail the least? What if they are simply better at failing, learning, adapting, and moving forward? The concept of "Fail Fast Forward" is about changing your relationship with failure. Instead of allowing one mistake or setback to define you, you use it as information. You learn what didn't work, make adjustments, and get back into action. In this episode, we break that process down into five powerful steps to your future. First, we talk about stopping the habit of calling yourself a failure. There is a huge difference between saying, "I failed at something," and saying, "I am a failure." One describes an event. The other creates an identity. Your mistakes are things that happened to you or decisions you made—they don't have to become the definition of who you are. Second, we discuss the importance of performing a failure autopsy. Instead of ignoring your mistakes or obsessing over them, examine them honestly. What happened? What was under your control? What did you learn? What will you do differently next time? The goal isn't to live in the past. It's to take the lesson and move forward. Third, we explore the power of making small bets. You don't always have to risk everything to discover whether an idea will work. Test things. Experiment. Start small. Get feedback. Whether you're starting a business, writing a book, changing careers, improving your finances, or pursuing a personal goal, smaller experiments can help you learn faster while reducing the cost of being wrong. Fourth, we look at setting a deadline for recovery. Failure can hurt, and you're allowed to be disappointed. But you can't allow disappointment to become a permanent place to live. At some point, reflection needs to turn into action. You have to decide when you're going to get back up and take the next step. Finally, we talk about creating a future bigger than your failure. Your past deserves your attention long enough to learn from it—but your future deserves even more attention. The rearview mirror can show you where you've been, but you can't drive forward while staring backward. This episode is ultimately about resilience, personal growth, money, success, and taking action. You don't need to have everything figured out before you begin. You don't need a guarantee that you'll succeed. You need the willingness to learn, adapt, and continue. Your future doesn't require a perfect past. It requires movement. So if you've been afraid to try something because you're worried about failing, this episode is your reminder that failure doesn't have to stop you. Fail fast. Learn faster. Move forward. Your next chapter could be waiting on the other side of the mistake you're currently afraid to make. And remember: One failure is an event. It does not have to become your identity.
