For decades historical Jesus scholars assumed the birth stories in the Gospels (Matthew 1 & 2 and Luke 1 & 2) were not historical accounts; but they were legends or myths.  Case Closed.   Not so fast. Caleb Friedeman is reopening the cold case and asking the right kinds of questions. Not just of the Gospels, but of other kinds of ancient biographies. The kinds you read in Suetonius, Philo, and Plutarch, just to name a few.   Did they intend to write history? Or not?  How can you tell?  This is part one of a two-part conversation.   Here is a link to the transcript of this episode. Listen to more great episodes of The Stone Chapel Podcast. Jesus is often depicted as a prophet who is replacing Moses' law with his own, distinct law.  In his book Jesus and the Law of Moses: The Gospels and The Restoration of Israel Within First Century Judaism, Paul Sloan challenges that portrayal for another that places Jesus at the heart of Judaism.   He joins David Capes on The Stone Chapel Podcast to discuss his book and to make the case that we have not often taken seriously the prophetic notion that God promises to restore his people. For Sloan Jesus becomes the "herald" of that good news: "Our God reigns." Click here for a transcript of this episode. You can listen to more amazing episodes here. Chris Dolson has a terrific idea he inherited from his professor and mentor, Haddon Robinson: bring together an expert on a book of the Bible with 35-40 pastors who are experts on their churches and tasked with the responsibility to teach and preach.   The result is the DIDASKO seminars that are taking place all around the United States.  If the busy-ness of ministry has caused you to fall out of love with the Scriptures, these seminars are for you.   To find a time and location near you go to Didasko Seminars. When is the last time you heard a strong, inspiring sermon on the ascension of Christ?  Ross Hastings has noticed how churches, Protestant churches in particular, neglect the doctrine of the ascension in their preaching and teaching.  Why is that?  It is central to the New Testament story and the continuing story of the gospel. Dr. Hastings joins David Capes on The Stone Chapel Podcast to talk about his book, The Glory of the Ascension: Celebrating a Doctrine for the Life of the Church.   You'd be surprised how many teachings and Christian practices tie into this neglected doctrine.  Here is a transcript for today's podcast episode.   TSCP 268 Another Awakening in Germany? with Benjamin Marx and Jurgen Schulz In 1958 a quiet awakening came to an area of southern Germany, led by a German Lutheran Pastor.  That awakening spread to southern Germany and into parts of France.  As it came, a movement was founded which fostered a Protestant religious order of men and women, who took vows of poverty and chastity.  They became the backbone of the movement in Adelshofen.    In this podcast we explore a bit of the history, mission and uniqueness of this school with Dr. Jurgen Schulz, the president, and with a lecturer in New Testament, Dr. Benjamin Marx.  Is the Awakening back again?   You can listen to more episodes of The Stone Chapel Podcast here. One theme in the New Testament that has not been studied: mothers and motherhood. That is until now. Dr. Jennifer Houston McNeel, a New Testament professor at the St. Mary's Ecumenical Institute in Baltimore, MD, has now written that book—"Under Her Wings: Mother and Motherhood in the New Testament." She joins David Capes on "The Stone Chapel Podcast" to discuss how themes of mother and motherhood shape the story of the Gospels, but also leaders like Jesus, Paul, and John. These men talk freely about themselves as church leaders not only in fatherly tones but also in motherly as well. And they extend those qualities to God himself. It's an important book for pastors, church leaders, and scholars alike. "The Stone Chapel Podcast" is part of the ChurchLeaders Podcast Network.
