Description
Do I Really Hate Men?
Interesting question and one I have asked myself many times. This is not an 'I hate men' podcast neither is it just an account of my divorce and the many awful events leading up to and during it. This podcast is a safe space to delve into what happens when relationships end, it provides guidance on how to carry on being a functioning adult and/or Single Mum when you feel broken inside.
This podcast provides hope sprinkled with humour, at times its emotional at times inspiring and at times sad. I have a message to share with women around the world, come join me and your global sisters for a weekly dose of Superhero Mum inspiration and stories.
My mission -to help women and mothers globally to recover from relationship pain, lead meaningful happy lives and inspire their children to succeed.
NOTE – I need you to know that I don't hate men! It's important that you know there are many great men out there. Many fantastic fathers and single fathers trying hard to do a great job. I know little about the struggles of single fathers; however, I presume they are numerous common issues we share with these amazing men who strive to do the right thing by their children.

In this heartfelt solo episode of "Do I Really Hate Men," Ang shares a personal reflection on transitioning from being a single mom to entering the "empty nest" phase, which she embraces as her new "single powerhouse" era. She opens up about the emotional challenges and pride she feels as her two sons move into their independent lives—one joining the RAF and the other pursuing a career at sea. Ang also addresses a social media phrase she encountered this summer, "married single mom," critiquing its meaning and the way it undermines the true challenges faced by single mothers. (00:00) Introduction and Podcast Overview(02:04) Personal Updates and Life Changes(05:15) Embracing Empty Nest Syndrome(06:42) Book Recommendation: The Let Them Theory(07:58) Listener Stories and Podcast Evolution(09:01) Rant: The Concept of Married Single Moms(20:02) Empowerment and Final Thoughts KEY TAKEAWAYS Transitioning to an empty nest as a single mom is both challenging and empowering. The term "married single mom" diminishes the true struggles of single mothers. Single moms carry full emotional, physical, and financial burdens largely alone. Leaving unsupportive relationships can be an important step toward self-empowerment. BEST MOMENTS "Sometimes a man's only purpose in life is to show you that you'll be just fine on your own." "Single moms are absolutely super women every single day, carrying emotional, physical, and financial burdens alone." "There is no halfway house between being married and being a single mom—if you're not getting support, it might be time to move on." "Empty nest syndrome is harder for single moms, but it's also a chance to embrace a new powerful chapter in life." This week Ang is joined by Shailee, an associate director at FIS Global in India, who shares her unique perspective on the challenges and resilience of single mothers in India. Shailee speaks candidly about balancing a demanding career with single parenting, tackling societal taboos, and advocating for her daughter's independence in a culture still influenced by traditional norms. Drawing on her personal experiences and professional insights, she offers hope and motivation for single moms everywhere striving to be strong role models in any part of the world. KEY TAKEAWAYS Traditional cultural expectations can place immense pressure on single mothers in India. Acceptance within the family is just one step — wider societal change is often the real challenge. Education and equal opportunity for girls are growing but still face cultural hurdles. Resilience and advocacy are essential for single moms balancing work, family, and social expectations. BEST MOMENTS "In India, girls often get married at 21, which was considered the threshold." "Inside our home, we had acceptance, but the real challenge was telling society." "Parents say the guy should be a couple of years elder to you; we were the same age, which was unusual." "The real struggle was how do you tell the society when there's a taboo around single motherhood." "People often attach emotion to assets — like the house being tied to the children's continuity and stability." "Rarely do they understand what that actually means in practical terms." "Holding onto that might actually not be the best decision in the long term." In today's episode, Ang interviews Dr. Shannon Hirst, a research psychologist and Senior Research Lead at One Plus One, a UK-based charity focused on strengthening relationships. Shannon discusses her academic and practical journey—from studying forgiveness and attachment to developing support tools for families navigating relationship breakdowns. The episode explores why strong relationships are both a cornerstone of personal well-being and a public health concern, delving into the emotional challenges of separation, co-parenting, and the importance of effective communication. Shannon highlights One Plus One's free resources, especially the "Separating Better" app, which offers guidance, practical tools, and emotional support to parents going through separation. KEY TAKEAWAYS High-quality relationships are a leading factor in both the quality and length of life, comparable in health impact to abstaining from tobacco and alcohol use. The emotional readiness to transition from intimate partners to co-parents is crucial; being kind to oneself and learning new skills greatly aids this process. Effective co-parenting relies on kindness, adaptability, and strong communication—qualities that can be learned and are supported by One Plus One's resources and app. Even small, thoughtful actions (like communicating more empathetically or folding laundry for your ex-partner) can help nurture co-parenting relationships and ease conflict for the benefit of children. BEST MOMENTS "Relationships are the cornerstone of society. Everything starts with a single interaction." "Good quality relationships predict not only the quantity but also the quality of our lives." "You can't just switch your feelings off... be kind to yourself as you navigate this really challenging situation." "Communication is the biggest predictor of relationship satisfaction." "Anything that makes the process smoother for children is worth learning and practicing." It's important that you know there are many great men out there. Many fantastic fathers and single fathers trying hard to do a great job. I know little about the struggles of single fathers; however, I presume they are numerous common issues we share with these amazing men who strive to do the right thing by their children. ABOUT THE HOST Ang is first and foremost a very proud Mum. She is on a mission to share her experiences of both divorce and life as a single Mum. With a 25 year career in the corporate world, she has always been passionate about empowering women and those around her. She is a fully qualified life coach of 20 years and a self confessed self development junkie. Ang has written her first book called 'Do I Really Hate Men', due to be released later this year which NEEDS to be read by women worldwide. With a high level of emotional intelligence she works tirelessly to improve the lives of womankind through her words, both digitally and at speaking events globally. With a six year divorce behind her, Ang represented herself in court a total of 6 times. She has been a single parent of two boys for a total of 14 years. This week, Ang welcomes Claire Higham, an experienced associate solicitor specializing in family law at Slater Heelis. With over 16 years in the field, Claire brings insight into navigating complex and emotional divorce cases, from high-value financial disputes to sensitive children's matters, as well as IVF, surrogacy, and private adoptions. The conversation delves into Claire's unconventional path to law, her people-focused approach, and practical advice for anyone considering or going through a separation. (00:00) Introduction and Guest Introduction (00:40) Claire's Background and Experience (01:56) Journey into Family Law (03:12) Challenges and Emotional Aspects of Family Law (04:39) Importance of Early Legal Advice (06:40) Misconceptions and Realities of Legal Proceedings (09:27) Initial Consultation and Client Rapport (17:32) Court Proceedings and Mediation (19:32) The Impact of Parental Alienation (20:28) Legal Aid and Abuse Allegations (22:53) Navigating Legal Representation (25:16) Modern Family Dynamics (26:58) Personal IVF Journey (32:55) Balancing Career and Family (34:02) Advice for Divorce Journey (35:50) Conclusion and Contact Information KEY TAKEAWAYS Early legal advice is vital—waiting until communication breaks down often makes the process harder and more stressful. Every divorce case is unique; advice from friends or online sources can be misleading and unhelpful. Involving a solicitor does not have to make things adversarial—good lawyers prioritize resolution and keeping matters out of court when possible. BEST MOMENTS "It's one of the most traumatic periods in a person's life... they say it's like a bereavement , when you go through a separation." "Google is not your best friend. Lying in bed at three o'clock in the morning Googling divorces... is not the thing to do." "Every case is individual and all the facts are individual to you." Ep. 61 Kids & Separation: What Happens to Our Children During Divorce? w/ Nadine Pittam In this episode, Ang welcomes back Nadine Pittam, a BACP-accredited psychotherapist and host of the podcast "This Won't Fix You." Nadine returns to the podcast once more to discuss the emotional and psychological impact of divorce on children, drawing from her professional experience and her own childhood. The conversation explores the importance of boundaries, emotional validation, and understanding behavioral changes in children during family separation. Nadine offers practical advice for parents navigating this challenging transition, emphasizing honest communication, maintaining routines, and allowing children to express their feelings without burdening them with adult responsibilities. (00:00) Introduction and Welcome (00:26) Introducing the Guest: Nadine (02:17) Discussing Children's Well-being During Divorce (03:25) Boundaries and Containment (03:52) Emotional Validation (03:54) Behavior as Communication (18:01) Parental Responsibility and Modeling Resilience (24:08) Embracing Imperfection in Parenting (24:28) The Power of Apology and Repair (24:58) Never Too Late to Make Amends (25:39) The Importance of Accountability (27:38) Navigating Divorce and Separation (30:20) Respectful Co-Parenting (31:39) Challenges of Co-Parenting (39:10) Emotional Resilience in Children (39:53) Final Thoughts and Advice KEY TAKEAWAYS Children are highly perceptive and sense emotional changes in the home, even if they cannot fully articulate their feelings. Parents should model emotional honesty by acknowledging their own feelings, but must avoid placing emotional responsibility on their children. Validating a child's emotions and allowing them to express concerns—no matter how small—helps maintain their emotional well-being. Maintaining routines and familiar rituals provides children with stability and comfort during the upheaval of divorce. Parents should gently invite children to share their worries, responding to their questions at the child's pace rather than overwhelming them with adult concerns BEST MOMENTS "What you've just done is shown the vulnerability without showing neediness. And so you've essentially created a model for the child." "Minimizing something somebody feels or indeed to eradicate it completely... it's just not a helpful thing to do at all." "We're certainly not asking the children, 'Should mommy and daddy divorce?' The responsibility is not the child's." "Although their problems to us might seem insignificant in a way, actually they're massive things to them." (00:00) Introduction and Host's Recent Experience (01:15) Celebrating Global Parents Day (04:07) Challenges of Parenting (06:56) The Importance of Self-Care for Parents (10:00) Building Resilience in Children (11:38) Top Tips for Raising Resilient Children (14:32) Conclusion and Additional Resources KEY TAKEAWAYS Parenting is one of the most rewarding yet challenging roles, requiring immense strength and love every day. Global Parents Day honors all parents and caregivers for their profound impact on children and society. Self-care during divorce is restorative care; filling your own cup enables you to be the best parent possible. Children learn resilience by watching how their parents handle stress and adversity. Every parenting journey is unique and valid—there is no one right way to parent through life's challenges. BEST MOMENTS "Parenting is the hardest job you'll ever love." "Parents are the unsung heroes of the world, shaping the future every single day." "Taking care of yourself is not selfish—it's essential to being the best parent you can be." In this week's episode, Ang welcomes Bernadette Willems, a mediation specialist, to discuss the vital role of mediation in divorce and conflict resolution. The discussion explores Bernadette's journey from being a solicitor to becoming a mediator, the benefits of mediation over the traditional court process, and how mediation helps in dealing with various conflicts, including business disputes and professional breakdowns. They delve into the importance of communication, the challenges of co-parenting, and the impact of mediation on creating lasting change. Bernadette shares her insights on the mindfulness approach to mediation, the dynamics of the mediation process, and the advantages of having separate meetings with parties involved. The episode offers valuable advice for anyone contemplating divorce and highlights the importance of considering mediation as a primary step. (00:00) Introduction and Welcome (00:23) Meet Bernadette Willems: The Mediation Specialist (01:59) The Journey to Mediation (03:19) The Mediation Process Explained (05:57) Challenges and Misconceptions in Mediation (11:31) The Importance of Communication in Mediation (12:21) Personal Experiences and Advice on Mediation (14:25) The Role of a Mediator (25:50) The Benefits of Mediation Over Court (41:14) Final Thoughts and Advice (43:16) Conclusion and Farewell KEY TAKEAWAYS Mediation empowers individuals to resolve disputes themselves, fostering better outcomes than adversarial court battles. The introduction of mediation in the UK initially faced resistance from solicitors but ultimately became a collaborative process benefiting all parties. Legal aid for mediation is now limited, which can restrict access for vulnerable individuals who might benefit most from the process. Mediation is not just about financial settlements—it plays a crucial role in co-parenting arrangements and adapting to children's changing needs. The confidentiality and structure of mediation allow both parties to be heard, helping to break down polarization and promote constructive dialogue. BEST MOMENTS "In mediation, you are right at the center and can control what's happening." "Solicitors felt challenged that this new profession might stop their flow of clients." "Legal aid for mediation is now very limited, which leaves out vulnerable people." "The real beauty of mediation is that, with children, if parents can communicate, the arrangements are so much better." "Having the opportunity to be heard and listened to is hugely empowering." Limiting beliefs like "I'm not lovable" or "I'll never be happy again" are just stories you've told yourself—they're not facts. The process to change beliefs involves awareness, reframing, reinforcement, and aligned action. Tools like affirmations and visualization are not fluff—they work to rewire your mind when practiced consistently. You have the power to create your next chapter—and it can be better than you ever imagined. BEST MOMENTS "Your belief system is like a lens through which you see the world—and it shapes how you think, act, and respond to challenges." "Recovery from divorce is about creating your new story, your new life, your new future." "It doesn't matter if you don't believe your new belief yet—write it down anyway. Parent coaching is not about criticism but about co-creating solutions based on each family's unique values and strengths, much like having a personal trainer for your parenting journey. Children's challenging behaviors are forms of communication; understanding the root causes helps parents respond calmly rather than react impulsively. Emotional regulation is crucial for parents, especially single parents who don't have a partner to share the load; small moments of mindful self-care can make a big difference. Natalie highlights the similarities between toddlers and teenagers in their emotional development and the importance of patience and calm responses during outbursts. BEST MOMENTS "One day my story will be someone else's survival guide." "Parent coaching is your support person, not someone coming in to tell you what you're doing wrong." "Children act out because they're trying to communicate an unmet need, it really has nothing to do with you." "Regulating our emotions is super, super important — it changes how quickly a difficult situation can be resolved." "Even washing dishes can be a moment of self-care if you're present in the moment and mindful."
