This Week In Fandom History

SOS! This week, V and Emily return to a fandom that they know absolutely nothing about -- CBS procedural The Sentinel, one of the '90s big slash fandoms -- and learn about why, exactly, there is zero cultural footprint of this show outside of its impact on slash culture (and boy did it influence slash culture). We get into the vagaries of syndication contracts, weird rules for shows on Syfy and UPN, and the absolute weirdness of a show not even being available to torrent, let alone legally stream. What gives, CBS?! We wanna slash the thing! We want to participate in all of the fanfiction this fandom produced! This week, Emily and V look into another bummer event. In late October 2015, a 19‑year‑old fan artist from Arizona named Paige Paz, known online as Zamii070, posted a video from a hospital room after surviving a suicide attempt. For months, she had been the target of escalating harassment from corners of the Steven Universe fandom — a community built around a show that preached empathy, communication, and radical kindness. Her hospitalization forced the internet to confront an uncomfortable truth: how did one of the most progressive fandom spaces of the mid‑2010s become a breeding ground for mobbing, purity tests, and moral vigilantism? Please read the TWs in the episode title and take care of yourself before choosing to listen; there is nothing graphic and no details are disclosed, but be cautious if concerned.SourcesThe Daily Dotr/stevenuniverser/HobbyDramaJezebelAlphaOmegaSin on YouTubeOnline Hate and Hurt by Jessica Ruth AustinPromoTGI Femslash - Our favorite fan convention, TGIF/F, is happening soon! Roll for initiative! A few months ago, V and Emily got to play their first-ever TTRPGs on the fabulous show, Party Of One, hosted by GM Jeff. We had such a good time that he gathered us together to play our first-ever group TTRPG... all about fandom! Listen in as we learn how to play the game and create a fannish franchise from the ground up... through many reboots, remakes, and inevitable queer awakenings. It was so much fun; thank you, Jeff!Dis/Continuity -- Welcome to our anti/canon! Take part the creation, development, reinvention, and possible bastardization of a story idea. Step into the various worlds -- in-story and metafictional -- that have been built around it. Start from its origins in the 20th century media industry, up to its present status as the subject of a dedicated fandom (be it cult or "mainstream"). Along the way, you'll uncover the related stories of all the lives it has affected. A podcast about getting to know artists and entertainers through the shared, universal act of play. Each episode, host Jeff Stormer sits down with a guest one-on-one to play a game, tell a story, and have the kinds of experiences that can only occur when creative processes are allowed to run wild. There’s laughs, surprises, occasionally a few tears… it’s a good time. This Week In Fandom History is a fandom-centric podcast that tells you… what happened this week in fandom history!Follow This Week in Fandom History on Tumblr at @thisweekinfandomhistoryWe’re now on Instagram! @thisweekinfandomhistorySign up for our weekly zine on our website, http://www.thisweekinfandomhistory.com/zine!Check out our Fandom Primer playlist via linktr.ee/twifhpodcastYou can support the show via our Patreon at http://www.patreon.com/thisweekinfandomhistoryPlease remember to rate the show 5 stars on your listening platform of choice!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Down and... safe? This week, V and Emily are joined by fandom scholar Lena Barkin (The Fanthropologist) to discuss an event that should, really, be as notorious in fanfiction culture as the Anne Rice debacle or Cassandra Clare kerfuffle: the Blake's 7 Slash Wars. This seismic, terrible fanwank is technically still ongoing, but hit its heyday forty years ago as the cast and crew of Blake's 7 hit back at fans -- like, specific, named fans -- who dared to write Blake/Avon slash. This supersized episode looks at the dangers of parasocial relationships, why fandom and media celebs should never cross the streams, and the nature of slash in the landscape of the 1980s. Lena brings an important POV as someone who is actively in Blake's 7 fandom today -- and is a slasher. Who do you think is the real villain of this story? Let us know in the comments wherever you're listening!SourcesFanlore: Timeline of the Blake's 7 WarsPromoTGI Femslash - Our favorite fan convention, TGIF/F, is happening soon!
