Description

Andrea Olson of Go Diaper Free explains elimination communication - the concept of pottying your baby, as early as birth - which is what people have done for all of human history and in today's world where there are no diapers. She makes it easy to integrate EC into your modern lifestyle as a new parent, demystifies how to know your baby needs to go, how to take them to the toilet instead of primarily relying on the diaper, and makes EC approachable, accessible, and fun, for all parents...whether part-time, with or without diapers, and in any region of the world. Contrary to popular marketing messages, diapers are tools, not toilets, and babies are ALL born "ready" to use the toilet. Learn how to connect with your baby on this very natural level with Andrea's expert guidance, and experience the freedom of a life without dependence upon diapers, a life without traumatic toilet training, a life where your baby gets a head start on developing motor skills, communication, and learning by prioritizing this age-appropriate skill (0-18 months). EC honors your baby's dignity and makes parenting THAT much easier! Stop changing blowouts...and learn how to listen to your baby's requests for good hygiene. Learn more at godiaperfree.com. (PS - Andrea also occasionally covers potty training, for those of you who find us after 18 months.)

#89 Constipation woes

#89 Constipation woes

2025-11-2516:59

This one is for those of you with babies/toddlers already eating solids. With solid foods comes, well, solid poops. Sometimes too solid. If you've noticed your LO hasn't pooped in a while or is really struggling with poops, there are a couple of reasons they might be constipated.  Constipation can also cause other problems… Maybe they are refusing or avoiding the potty entirely. Maybe they're particularly irritable or clingy because of discomfort. Today we take a look at possible causes, as well as some things you can try to help ease that constipation!   Get full show notes and add your comments or questions here: https://godiaperfree.com/89 Get my free easy start guide for EC https://godiaperfree.com/start Start EC with your baby today with my popular book, Go Diaper Free: https://godiaperfree.com/thebook
OK this is probably the question I get the MOST often… Have you been told you have to wait until your child is "ready", or that this happens at like 3 years old? What if I told you I pottied all 6 of my kids literally from day 1? If you think that's crazy, listen to this episode, because I need to tell you about THE most important paradigm shift when it comes to toilet learning and how it affects our babies. And if you think you want to get your LO out of diapers, but you're not sure how/when/why, I got you.    Get full show notes and add your comments or questions here: https://godiaperfree.com/88 Start EC with your baby today with Andrea's popular book, Go Diaper Free: https://godiaperfree.com/thebook
I get asked this question all the time: do people do "elimination communication" in indigenous communities, or is it altogether something different? I've hand-picked my fave stories from Laurie Boucke's encyclopedic book on infant potty training, and also an article by Continuum Concept author Jean Leidloff. This is a great episode to listen to while you're cleaning the house or doing yardwork! I had a chat with about 40 parents in our Go Diaper Free community. 🗣️Most of them had been following me for ages, downloading guides, even buying potties…but hadn't started EC yet. 🙊 Why?  Overwhelm.  Fear of messing it up.  Worrying their baby was too fragile.  Or just sitting on the sidelines, watching instead of trying. 👀 In today's episode, I'll walk you through these common blocks and share the simplest way to finally begin EC with your baby.  Spoiler: it's way easier than you think. Ever wonder how parents in other cultures potty their babies? In today's episode, I'm sharing stories of indigenous peoples in Africa who never used diapers—long before "elimination communication" had a name.  From Botswana to Uganda, you'll hear how mothers simply knew when their babies needed to go, how older siblings pitched in, and why there's so much less fuss around pottying outside the Western world.  It's fascinating, eye-opening, and might just shift the way you see EC in your own home. That first morning, I almost caved. I had the disposables in my hand, ready to make things "easier" for the teacher.  But deep down, I knew I'd regret it. So I took a deep breath, sent Branson to preschool diaper-free at 18 months…and wow, what a rollercoaster it was.  Day one went great, day two was a disaster, and by day three we'd finally found our rhythm.  In today's episode, I'm sharing exactly how we navigated those ups and downs—and how you can make it work at daycare or preschool too.  Get full show notes and add your comments or questions here: https://godiaperfree.com/84 Get my free easy start guide for EC https://godiaperfree.com/start Start EC with your baby today with my popular book, Go Diaper Free: https://godiaperfree.com/thebook
It's happened to us all (right?)…you get really excited about how EC is going for you and your baby so you start telling more people about it and you're met with judgy looks and people questioning your sanity.  If you're ready to explain infant pottying to people without getting the stink-eye, this week's podcast episode is for you! Trust me, I've had more than a decade of practice telling people about how my babies poop in the potty from birth   Get full show notes and add your comments or questions here: https://godiaperfree.com/83 Get my free easy start guide for EC https://godiaperfree.com/start Start EC with your baby today with my popular book, Go Diaper Free: https://godiaperfree.com/thebook
If I had a dollar for how many moms didn't start elimination communication because they had to return to work, use a daycare, and didn't think it would be worth the effort...man, I'd have a bunch of dollars! You see, I am convinced that with the right story in your mind, you too will realize that you CAN do EC super-part-time, use a daycare, and still have early potty independence. You can have it all. I'll prove it to you with today's episode featuring a story from a busy working mom who read my book and decided to try EC strictly part-time!  Get full show notes and add your comments or questions here: https://godiaperfree.com/82.5 Get my free easy start guide for EC https://godiaperfree.com/start Start EC with your baby today with my popular book, Go Diaper Free: https://godiaperfree.com/thebook
If you're thinking this whole pottying thing could never work for you because you're expecting (or already have!) twins…Think again! I've helped like a million families do EC over the years, and certainly there were parents of twins among them! Even if you don't have actual twins, I know from my own experience that pottying multiple kids close in age can really complicate things. This week's episode is all about the tips and wisdom from some twin parents who have gone through EC– and found great success.  Get full show notes and add your comments or questions here: https://godiaperfree.com/82 Get my free easy start guide for EC https://godiaperfree.com/start Start EC with your baby today with my popular book, Go Diaper Free: https://godiaperfree.com/thebook

Your sweet second baby has arrived (or is due to arrive soon!) But your firstborn is still working on pottying skills (in addition to all the other toddler skills!). When you have your second baby, you're definitely doing double duty from then on out. It can be a big challenge - keeping up with elimination communication with your baby while you have a young toddler afoot. I know, I've been there, 4 times. But does EC have to go on the back burner while you wrangle your toddler (and possibly finish toilet training him or her)? I say, "no." Take a listen to all my tips in this week's podcast episode. Have you ever stubbed a toe, strained a wrist, or pulled your back? Maybe you have another physical limitation, and you're thinking:"I guess EC is off the table for me." In this week's episode I share my own foot injury story and some ways I was able to adapt my EC practice to keep up our pottying rhythm. Do you need a special potty to successfully do elimination communication? Nope. You can just hold them over the sink or toilet (I definitely have!) BUT it can make a huge difference if you can choose the right potty! That includes a better experience for both you AND your baby. One of the most common reasons people don't start EC is…They think it just sounds like too much work. But then…the "easy" alternative is just leaving that baby in a soiled diaper for hours on end. Don't our babies deserve better than that? Let me help you reduce the friction of trying to potty your baby. In this week's episode I'll cover all the best EC-friendly ways to outfit your LO (they'll still be cute, dw!)  Get full show notes and add your comments or questions here: https://godiaperfree.com/76 Get my free easy start guide for EC https://godiaperfree.com/start Start EC with your baby today with my popular book, Go Diaper Free: https://godiaperfree.com/thebook

#73 Forget about goals

OK, I know my whole company is literally called "Go Diaper Free" BUT… Did you know that actually focusing TOO MUCH on the "goal" of being diaper free can actually hinder your EC practice? I'm sure almost everyone has heard of the wildly popular book Atomic Habits by now. It's referenced a lot in productivity and business circles, but there are definitely some fantastic takeaways we can apply to the whole potty learning journey. Make sure you tune in to this week's episode if you want to hear how we can build a system for doing EC that sets us up for success.  Get full show notes and add your comments or questions here: https://godiaperfree.com/73 Get my free easy start guide for EC https://godiaperfree.com/start Start EC with your baby today with my popular book, Go Diaper Free: https://godiaperfree.com/thebook
If you know anything about Montessori, you know it's all about preparing the child's environment to facilitate learning. This applies to toys and mealtime and other routines, but it applies to pottying too! Today's episode gives you action steps that you can take right now to make toilet learning a seamless and easy task for everyone in your home.  Get full show notes and add your comments or questions here: https://godiaperfree.com/72 Get my free easy start guide for EC https://godiaperfree.com/start Start EC with your baby today with my popular book, Go Diaper Free: https://godiaperfree.com/thebook
Guess what? Montessori educator Merry Hadden called any potty training after age 2 "REMEDIAL". Even I wouldn't have the guts to put that on my website. What it really means is that children who have exclusively been in diapers have missed out on so much of the developmental picture. All is not lost. Listen to hear how parents can help "restore" their child's natural propensity for good hygiene, cleanliness, and order.  Get full show notes and add your comments or questions here: https://godiaperfree.com/71 Get my free easy start guide for EC https://godiaperfree.com/start Start EC with your baby today with my popular book, Go Diaper Free: https://godiaperfree.com/thebook

I agree that doing EC that is good for the environment and that the study based on which the industry developed is faulty. However, here it is argued that the study was not scientific enough and then it is stated that behavioral issues in kids are likely generated by diapers, and this is stated with absolutely no evidence (not scientific, not even anecdotal). Consistency is needed.
