Description

The Redscroll Podcast is a show that works as a companion to what we do at Redscroll Records in Wallingford, CT USA. We are a record store that has a heavy emphasis on the left of center / underground music of the world. Whether it be underappreciated or just has a niche audience, marginalized or just off the radar it's all of interest to us. With the show we'll generally have a localized focus. We'll discuss upcoming releases and what is in our personal rotation at the moment. We'll talk about upcoming area musical activities. We'll talk to guests who have to do with all of the above. And we'll talk about specific dealings with the store. If you have input you're welcome to contact us through email (redscroll @ gmail). More information about our store as well as updates and general blog posts can be found at www.redscrollrecords.com

Gun to God's Head is a fairly new local metalcore band. Members who joined us on the podcast this month are Del (frontwoman/vocalist), Kane (also notably a member of current very active band Vomit Forth), and Brandon (who plays in so many bands he can't name them off the top of his head, ha! We might've put him on the spot in this episode). Kane, Del & Brandon This episode could very much serve as a primer to metalcore (and shoegaze and some other off-shoot inspirations) through the filter of 3 members of Gun to God's Head. I felt that so much that I announced during the show that I would make a playlist. So I did. Here it is. Definitely listen to the show and then skim through this playlist and take in the stuff that may be new to you or you want to check out more deeply. Lots of bands mentioned in this show. Check the show out. It's a fun one! We open, as usual, with what we're listening to and move on to how The Cellar on Treadwell became a thing and the struggles of opening just before a pandemic hit and now striving with a fairly full schedule full of local and touring acts. Jay Holmes and Kyle Holmes are brothers and 2 out of 3 of the owner/operators of Ritual Pizza Co. in Cheshire, CT (operating out of the Counter Weight Brewing space).  Ken (the other owner/operator) couldn't make it for fatherly reasons. We talk about what we're listening to. We talk about how deeply ingrained the music they listen to is to their business and how it informs what they do from the visual design aspects to just how they vibe while cooking and how they want to incorporate what they do into events at the brewery and beyond that. We talk about the beginnings of the operation doing pop ups and now recently moving from Manchester to Cheshire. We're looking forward to having them there for our next record fair (in October)! Redscroll & Friends Favorites of 2024 We have our (Rick & Josh's) favorites of the year as usual. We have the Redscroll employee favorites also as usual. We've expanded beyond that even! Favorites from some folks in bands on our record label and folks we closely associate and collaborate on the regular! Friends! Most of those folks have recorded their own list and introduced themselves plus there's a few that have submitted a list that we've creatively included. You can go on the web post to peruse their lists (redscroll records dot com) as well. They've all but a couple (yet) been on the podcast too so we'll include their respective episode links on the site as well. Happy New Year!   Redscroll Records Label Releases for 2024 We generally feel too close to them ourselves (Josh & Rick) to include the Redscroll releases as favorites, but of course they are. We wouldn't release them otherwise! So, firstly, here's a quick round up of what we've released this past year (and it's been a good amount of great stuff)! In chronological order:February 2nd: Intercourse "Egyptian Democracy / Bum Wine" 12" February 2nd: Doom Beach / Chop Chop Chop Chop Chop Chop Chop (split) 12" April 5th: The Knife Kickers "Nameless" LP April 8th: Dirt Devil "Desert Moon" CS (SOLD OUT) March 1st: Tongue Depressor & Austin Larkin "Landau Bar" LP June 18th: Intercourse "Bag Fumblers Incorporated 2021-2024" CD July 5th: Trance Macabre "Trance Macabre" LP August 2nd: Dissolve "Burnt" CS/LP October 29th / December 6th: Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean "Sisyphean Cruelty" CD/CS/LP We've got a couple slated for next year already so we're not slowing down! Stay tuned for announcements on those! A couple more we were associate with with exclusive colors this year too! Kidnapped "Disgust" (DAZE) – would absolutely work with again, Lumpy is great. Kidnapped is great. Craven Faults "Bounds" (Leaf) Electronic experimental ambient act out of the Yorkshire, UK. We were contacted by Leaf about splitting a color (Lime Kiln Grey) with Norman Records in the UK and to have a unique OBI strip and it came out great. The record is really a great record and we're happy to be associated with it and it's our first overseas collaboration of any kind so that's pretty exciting and we're absolutely chuffed with how it turned out. FAVORITES LISTS! We've got our lists first. Staff picks follow. Then the rest will be in no particular order other than I will try to mix it up in the edit and put different ends of the spectrum back to back to keep y'all on your toes and hopefully interested in it all! Like I said before you'll be able to check them all out on our web post. Links, pictures, etc. up on the site. I'll assemble a playlist as well to publish with this so you can check all these things in more depth in your own time. Nick & Tim helm a relatively new project called Disfigure. So far, they have just one tape release though they are working on more. Nick worked on many of the songs in relative isolation while living in New Hampshire and then recorded them with Tim once back in CT.  We start as usual talking about what we're listening to.  We recorded in October which lent itself to some opening talk about horror movies and bake off.  We quickly veer into how the band started and what inspired it to happen; how they were inspired by Godflesh, d-beat and black metal to create their sound. Conversation continues down that path and veers off until we finally trail off talking about the first Redscroll release after becoming a store, Hostage Calm's Lens - a record Tim is on and a band Nick later joined and also a band that bares little other connection to this current project sound-wise other than the people who made it.  Anyway! We are joined by a man, Byron Coley, who has more stories than we could fit into every past episode of our podcast and we surely packed as much as we could into a single sit down. We start off with some talk about what we're listening to as usual and we move on to record fair talk (don't forget about our Record Fair at Counter Weight Brewing Co. on October 13th featuring Byron selling upstairs!). Byron tells tales of driving John Fahey around looking for classical records, his process for listening to 10 new records everyday, writing for weekly publications and magazines like the Wire, Forced Exposure, Spin and on and on.  We talk about the label and store he runs with his friend Ted in Florence, Western Massachusetts. We go back to his start writing a tour diary with Devo, but this is yet a scratch on the surface and this podcast is our longest yet for good reason! Check it out! We'll discuss upcoming releases and what is in our personal rotation at the moment. We'll talk about upcoming area musical activities. We'll talk to guests who have to do with all of the above. And we'll talk about specific dealings with the store. If you have input you're welcome to contact us through email (redscroll@gmail.com).
