Description
The UnSunday Show asks honest questions about the origin and validity of institutional church rules, traditions, and practices. These religious rules and practices lead us away from the simplicity of the gospel and into an exhausting performance-based experience that is designed to perpetuate itself by placing ever increasing demands on its people and are of no value in Christ. If you're exhausted from trying to keep all the religious rules that have been placed on you, listen in to these conversations as we rediscover the freedom we've been given, apart from religion and empty religious obligation.

Today I am introducing you to a group of shorter episodes that I’m going to start dropping in between the regular longer episodes that I do. I’m calling these shorter episodes Take Five. In this first Take Five, Let's talk about what it means that Christ is the end of the law for all who believe. This episode is available in video on the UnSunday YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/bFNtpuVi5Mg Mike Kapler joins me today as we talk about the Sermon on the Mount. Were Jesus' words in Matthew 5–7 directed to believers today as behavior goals — or were they intended for Old Covenant Jews still living under the law? Before the cross, before the church existed, before the New Covenant was established — who was Jesus addressing, and why? In this conversation, we explore the covenant setting...
Is Hebrews 10:25 about modern church attendance or membership? Does it mean I need to be involved in church and conforming to church rules and expectations or is it referencing something else? Is it a call to belong to a religious organization or is it a call to leave religion and find true freedom in Jesus in this New Covenant? Let's put it in context and see what we can glean from it. This episode was originally recorded as a video. You can find it here: https://youtu.be/hTbHHH1Nxs4?si=cukv...
In this episode I take a look at the Lord's Prayer in response to a listener's question about the forgiveness of sins. Do we have to forgive others in order to be forgiven? And how does that fit in to what I said in a previous video about 1 John 1:9 and the forgiveness of sins? Let's put the Lord's Prayer and the Sermon on the Mount in context and see what we can conclude. This episode was recorded as a video. What is the New Covenant? What is the Old Covenant? Why does it matter? In this episode I take a high-level overview of the Old and New Covenants and why knowing the difference between the two is important when we read the Bible. This is a topic that I'm going to weave into future videos in much more detail as I answer questions that have come up in many of your comments. Understanding the Old Covenant/New Covenant distinction is essential to understanding much of what is written in our...
Age doesn’t diminish faith or make it less relevant—it clarifies it. This is the gospel after decades of life experiences, needing to be right, letting go, listening, and learning that the only thing that matters is faith expressing itself in love. Joel Brueseke joins me as we talk about tithing. What is tithing? Where did it come from? Are we supposed to tithe? Is it a sin not to tithe? Does God want us to tithe to the local church? Hint: You can keep your money. Let's talk. Do you feel the constant pressure put on you by religion to be confessing all of your sins while at the same time, filled with anxiety and seldom experiencing peace? What if I told you 1 John 1:9 has nothing to do with believers recounting all of their sins to stay forgiven? Let's talk. Are local assemblies supposed to be centered around one person or a small group of people, or has that emphasis forced the gifts of the Spirit and the full expression of Christ into obscurity? Jon Zens joins me today for an open discussion about church. Is the institutional church model that is all around us an accurate reflection of the mind of Christ for his people, or have we settled for something far less than what we see in the pages of the New Testament? This episode is available in video format here: https://youtu.be/vHH8tYyzNIE Maybe the reason you don't fit in church… is because you were never meant to. In Part 1: Church and Ekklesia, I talk about the core reason there is tension between institutional religion and the living, breathing community Jesus called ekklesia. If you've ever wondered why church isn't a good fit for you anymore, and you find yourself not fitting in, this conversation will hit home. This isn't about walking awa...

When church leaders ascended and became prominent in the assembly, the body of Christ suffered and continues to suffer. This episode takes a look at how institutional leadership reshaped gatherings that were once spontaneous, relational, and Spirit-led. Amber Stephens joins me in this episode of The UnSunday Show as we ask the question, "Is the gospel enough?" Does the gospel need our help? Why do we think it does and why do we add things to it that actually diminish it? Additionally, why do we get sidetracked from it become preoccupied with pet doctrines and teachings that have nothing to do with it? Let's explore that in this episode. No titles, no pulpits, no sermons—just real talk about what it means to live in the finished work of Christ. We talk about: Grace apart from works The difference between the Old and New Covenants How churches occasionally preach grace but expect performance What it real...
Is signing a formal church membership contract a necessary expression of loyalty? Has the institutional church traded the freedom of life in Christ for institutional control? In this episode I explore how formal membership contracts — often loaded with behavioral clauses, doctrinal checkpoints, and institutional loyalty — distort the gospel of grace and reduce free flowing community to a legal transaction with rewards for compliance and punishments for non-compliance. Jesus brought us into a ...
What happens when church becomes a breeding ground for control, fear, and manipulation? This episode of The UnSunday Show exposes the patterns of church bullying, from toxic leadership to spiritual abuse that often occurs when the institutional church abandons the New Covenant gospel of grace in favor of a mixed-covenant version of a gospel of their own making. This mixed covenant gospel is no gospel at all. I'm excited to have Jeremiah Ryan join me as we explore the topic of chur...
I'm continuing the topic of women in the church and how historically, the church's view of woman has been harmful and abusive. It's not a good track record. This is the fourth of four episodes that I brought over from our Grace Cafe podcast to share with you here. In this episode we talk about headship and submission. We use 1 Corinthians 11 and Ephesians 5 as the backdrop for our conversation and why we believe Paul's use of the word "head" (κεφαλὴ) wouldn't have meant authority or leader to...
