Todays guest Herb Sargent was not always a man of faith. We look into his journey of entrepreneurship and how his values changed throughout his life, and even his company values. You can listen to today's episode at www.corymcarlson.com/podcast In this episode, you'll discover… Key trait to win at home and at work (1:45) Healthy conflict. (6:15) Keeping your company curious to grow (15:30) Why he hired a coach (19:45) Herb's Bio: My favorite part of the job is knowing that we are bringing value to not only our employee-owners but also our customers. I also really enjoy the fact that, due to our employee ownership plan, I'm working for and serving our employee-owners. We need to brush off the stigma that the construction industry is just some dead-end job when in actuality, it's not a dead-end job at all. It's one thing if you go to college and then work in construction, but there's a lot of stigma in our society associated with not going to college and working in construction. In reality, there are ample opportunities in this industry — and you might even say equivalent opportunities — whether you go to college or not. There are so many opportunities for advancement, and we need to do a better job of highlighting that. I like to spend my free time with my family — I'm married to Tristine and I have two adult children, James and Savannah, and a step-son, Colby. I love to be on the water. It doesn't need to be a big yacht or anything like that. Just get me in a boat on the water and I'm happy. I also like to cook. I'm all over the place in the kitchen. I have a pizza oven, so I like to do fire-roasted pizzas. I also enjoy smoking meat. Getting together and making a meal with friends and family is always fun for me. Learn more here What's Next? Today I sat down with Derek Welborn, and we dove straight into his story of faith during a health scare. This episode is also a reminder of how important it is to find community. And how it can change the trajectory of your life when you allow yourself to rely on them. You can listen to today's episode at www.corymcarlson.com/podcast In this episode, you'll discover… Derek's story (2:10) How community helped make this dream bigger (12:23) How God made Derek's goal come true (21:00) How the Lord's timing works (25:50) Derek's Bio: In 2020, Derek Welborn was diagnosed with severe alopecia—an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss. It was a hard season, wrestling with questions of identity and confidence, and in that struggle, hats became a daily companion. One day, staring at the hat he had worn for a year, Derek asked himself: "Could I make these?" The answer was yes. From a kitchen table in Austin, Texas, he began shaping fur felt into something more than an accessory. Hat making became a way of creating beauty out of challenge—turning raw materials into something unique and lasting. That spark grew into Saints. While Derek is still at the bench, measuring, sewing, and distressing every custom hat, the story didn't stop with hair loss. Thanks to treatment, his hair eventually grew back — a reminder that no season lasts forever, and that the story you're in isn't finished yet. Saints has become more than one man's journey. We aren't built alone. Rooted in heritage, craft, and faith, this small business grows through community: every customer, every story, every well-born dream, and every well-worn ride that shapes the goods we send into the world.
