Description
The Creative Impostor provides expert insight on podcasting as a sustainable, independent media ecosystem for creative leaders—focusing on audience trust, ethical storytelling, and long-term impact over growth metrics.
We explore the intersection of identity and creativity -- who we are and why we make what we make. Host Andrea Klunder has inhabited many creative roles: singer, actor, writer, filmmaker, yoga teacher, bodyworker, meditator, educator, entrepreneur, podcaster, teacher, media producer, strategist, speaker… She'll take you inside her own head and the minds of other creative professionals to see what drives us despite the voices of self-doubt that threaten to stop us in our tracks -- with a little sprinkling of how we create the life and work we imagine.

How do creative leaders build capacity in a sociopolitical Hellscape? In this episode of The Creative Impostor (Creativity and Media as Resistance), Andrea Klunder talks with small business coach Leigh Cambre about building leadership capacity during a difficult sociopolitical moment. Leigh defines resistance as supporting the frontline through boundaries, balance, and structurally designed self-care, especially scheduling "two slots of blob time" each week for judgment-free spontaneity. The conversation uses the Enneagram as a practical tool for identifying over-coping patterns that replicate into business leadership, reframes "follow your passion" advice with a more sustainable "money supports choices" sequence, and explores how compassion and self-knowledge reduce "us vs. them" thinking. Is culture losing color? Are we becoming more neutral? More beige? More white? Why does it matter? Recently PANTONE® released it's pick for 2026 Color of the Year -- Cloud Dancer, a lovely shade of... white? It left a lot of the internet feeling everything from flat to pure outrage. Why? In this conversation with art therapist and ethnographer Isabelle Rizo, we're jumping into the commentary and taking it deeper into cultural resonance, end-of-life art making and choosing your OWN color of the year. Have you ever had an experience of working with someone at the top of their game that pushes you, artistically (in a good way), to be and do more than you have in the past? A project that streeeetches your skills in a way that is at times uncomfortable and exhausting, but in the end you see (or in this case hear) what you've created and say, "Wow! That really is good."? And then suddenly, you find yourself in new rooms, having new conversations, with new people, about even more inspiring topics? Okay… well if you haven't yet had that experience, go ahead and live vicariously through me for the next hour and maybe you'll get a taste of what I mean. Let me introduce you to the Del Sol Quartet, currently composed of Charlton Lee on viola, Hyeyung Sol Yoon and Ben Keith on violins, and Kathryn Bates on cello. And if you've been paying attention, you may know that I've been having the pleasure to collaborate with Del Sol on the first season of their podcast Sounds Current, which was a 2024 official selection at the Tribeca Audio Storytelling Festival and won a Sold Signal Award for Artists & Designers Shaping Culture. But awards aside… This episode isn't just about creating a podcast, though we do talk a little bit about Sounds Current in the second half. It's about the joys and tension of being part of a group of artists (rather than a solo creator), pushing yourself to do something new in order to move society, and making art that means something valuable even when, and especially if, it doesn't make sense economically. There are some shows, some podcasters, who embody the spark that first drew me to podcasting's flame in the depths of entrepreneurial burnout. Becky Kilmnick and Diana Doty of Homespun Haints are those podcasters. Over the years, they have become masters in the craft of independent digital storytelling and community building through their horror comedy podcast of true ghost stories. Ever the experimental entrepreneurs, Becky and Diana have recently launched a NEW project for the indie business minded creative searching for a better path. And no, this one isn't haunted… probably. Podcasting, paranormal investigations, entrepreneurial success (and failure), cats in space… all this and more lie ahead should you choose to continue down this road. YOUR VOICE... What do you use if for? Have you ever thought of it like an instrument? Do you consider yourself to be a voice professional? Do you feel confident in your voice? Do you even LIKE the sound of it? Well… if you speak, perform, podcast, teach, lead meetings, create content for YouTube or other social media channels, you ARE probably a voice professional and your voice is an invaluable asset. Or at least it CAN be with a little guidance. And that's a pursuit worthwhile to both Mary Chan and me. And it's what we are exploring in the first half of this episode. Mary is a Podcast Strategist, Voice Coach, & Voice-Over Artist. She launches and edits podcasts for business professionals. She's the founder of Organized Sound Productions, and producer and host of The Podcaster's Guide to a Visible Voice. Mary and I are also sharing: insights on whether your current voice is authentically yours (why or why not), the intangible benefits of podcasting, whether podcasts need to be video, the challenging parts of entrepreneurship (ahem… sales), and she'll even give you a quick guide to writing love notes to YOUR voice. Have you ever heard someone tell you, "You have to show your work!" If that brings you back to high school math class... SAME. Well this episode isn't about math, unless you count "podcast value math!" Megan Dougherty is show the work for me on what I've known for a while but couldn't quite put into words... there is NOT one podcast strategy to rule them all! In fact, she wrote the book on it. And I can't stop talking about it. Now whether you're a podcaster, a creative business owner, a content marketer... really anyone putting your creative work out into the world through media, this conversation is for you. What it comes down to? How do you know if what you're doing is working and what does "working" even mean? (Hint: It's not about the downloads!) Podcasting, writing a book, getting comfortable with discomfort, and navigating existential crises... all with DATA on your side! Here we go... LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU! Email me andrea@thecreativeimpostor.com. Let me know who you are, how you're connected to podcasting (fan, creator, dreaming of being a creator, etc.) and your thoughts around monetization, purpose, changes in the industry, etc. And if you REALLY want to get my attention, how has data influenced your creative business or podcast? Hey. I've been away from this podcast for about 2 years and I'm feeling kinda awkward about it. But, either you're still here or you've just found me, and that makes me super happy because I've been recently inspired to return to producing The Creative Impostor, amidst all of the other shows I'm producing for clients. I've been noticing, however, that some things are changing in the podcast space, and with creators more broadly. Some of it is awesome, and some not so much! So what do you do when some sort of transformation seems imminent? You stare bravely into the void, try to let go of expectations, and start asking questions.
