How It's Really Going at 50 with Shana Recker

Heads up: this episode talks about sexual assault and has strong language. Everything I say about stories in the news is alleged and my opinion. This one was hard to record. The other day I was walking my dog and a man stopped me to ask what kind of dog I have. Nothing happened. And my brain still went to: this person is trying to kidnap me. That's the problem, and that's what this episode is about. I talk about the "be nice" voice that kept me standing there, what my husband said when I told him, and how I know I'm not just being super sensitive. I get into what's all over the news right now, the people in power who are getting away with it, and what I think the good guys need to start doing. I don't have a tidy answer. We're tired. We're angry. We don't want to be afraid anymore. This is my rant. This is my rage. This is my message today. Somewhere around 48, I went quiet. I closed a business, got off social media, and just went inward. And for a while it felt like that was how I'd be forever. Two things happened to me in the last couple weeks. One made my body go into full panic mode over a client I never should have said yes to. The other was a concert that made me feel more alive than I have in months. Turns out they're the same lesson. I'm talking about learning to tell the difference between a real gut-level no and just plain fear dressed up as one, because I almost missed out on something great by confusing the two.
