Why I'm Ditching Instagram and What I'm Doing Instead to Grow My Podcast On social media burnout, solopreneur strategy, and finally paying attention to my gut. In this episode, I'm thinking out loud about something that's been shifting for me in a big way: social media. I recently deleted Facebook, I'm walking away from my business Instagram, and I'm done pretending that being everywhere online is the path to building something meaningful. Spoiler: it's not, at least not for me. I share what I learned from podcaster Jan Ditchfield about how much time solopreneurs are actually spending on Instagram content versus what they're getting back in return, and why SEO-driven content like podcasts and blogs is where I'm putting my energy instead. I also talk about the one platform I'm actually enjoying right now, and why it fits this podcast perfectly. And I get honest about this podcast itself. There's something about it that I can't let go of, and I'm finally paying attention to that feeling instead of getting in my own way.Lindsay Smith Creative: CLICK HERE Jan Ditchfield Podcast: CLICK HERE
It has been eight months since I started using a GLP-1 as part of my overall health and wellness and I wanted to give you a real, honest update on how it's going. In this episode I'm sharing my full experience with Ozempic, from why I started it, what the first few months felt like, where I am now, and why I refuse to feel shame about any of it. I cover: What the first three to four months actually felt like, including the food noise and alcohol noise going completely quiet Side effects I experienced including hair thinning and hormonal shifts Why I stayed at the minimum dose and what that decision has meant for me How I'm combining this with workouts, protein targets, and HRT Why so many women are keeping this a secret and why I think that needs to stop What my doctor said when I finally told her everything This is my story only. It is not medical advice. But if you are in perimenopause, frustrated, doing all the things and seeing no results, I want you to know this conversation exists. In this episode, I’m sharing something very real and very current. This morning, I sat down to delete old podcast episodes dating all the way back to 2016. As I moved through them one by one, I realized I wasn’t just cleaning up content. I was looking at past versions of myself. Different belief systems. Different seasons. Different motivations. From my network marketing era, to business coaching, to personal development and mindset culture, this episode is a candid reflection on growth, scarcity, hustle, and what success actually means to me now. This isn’t about regret or shame. It’s about perspective. And letting go of what no longer fits. In this episode, I talk about: Why some of my earliest podcast episodes make me cringe now How fast money and success can be driven by fear and scarcity The pressure to hustle, perform, and prove worth How personal development culture became just another hamster wheel Losing my house, my confidence, and the illusion of “having it all” How perimenopause forced me to slow down and reassess everything What success means to me at 50 Why deleting old episodes feels like shedding skin Making space for what’s next, even when you don’t know exactly what that is yet If you’re feeling stuck in hustle mode, questioning the version of success you’re chasing, or sensing that something in your life needs to be released, this episode is for you. Sometimes growth doesn’t look like more.Sometimes it looks like less, with more clarity. Reflection question for you: What are you holding onto that no longer reflects who you are? And what might be possible if you let it go?   Thank you all so much for listening! It genuinely means a lot to know that my journey, and what I’m learning along the way, helps you too. I just finished watching Members Only: Palm Beach on Netflix, and I didn’t expect it to hit me the way it did. At first glance, the show looks like over-the-top wealth, social rules, and Palm Beach society drama. And yes, some of it is ridiculous. But underneath all of that, there’s a much deeper message about identity, conformity, and what happens when people believe they need to change who they are to belong. In this episode, I talk about Ro Mina storyline and why it made me so uncomfortable and, at the same time, so fired up. Watching her be coached, corrected, and pressured to fit the “Palm Beach way” made one thing very clear to me: any environment that requires you to erase parts of yourself in order to be accepted will eventually cost you your confidence. I share how this theme shows up far beyond reality TV. It shows up in business, social media, friendships, family dynamics, and especially in the constant self-questioning so many of us live with: Should I say this? Should I post that? What will people think? What if they misunderstand me? I also talk honestly about my own experience with trying to be palatable online, how that led to burnout, and why I’ve stopped performing for approval. One of the biggest takeaways from this episode is something I deeply believe: fake is an energy, and people feel it. Even when they can’t explain why, they feel it. This episode is about why being yourself is not reckless, dramatic, or risky. It’s efficient. It simplifies your life. It attracts the right people. And it makes success feel lighter instead of like a constant uphill push. I wrap up by sharing three practical steps you can take to start being more yourself, even if it feels uncomfortable at first: 1. Recognizing when fear is stopping you and acting anyway 2. Starting small instead of trying to change everything at once 3. Detaching from outcomes and letting go of controlling perception If you’ve ever felt exhausted from trying to fit into someone else’s version of who you should be, this conversation is for you. Thank you all so much for listening! It genuinely means a lot to know that my journey, and what I’m learning along the way, helps you too. Have you ever felt like you don’t recognize yourself anymore? In this episode, I’m talking honestly about a season I know a lot of women experience in midlife, when everything feels disjointed. Work feels harder. Social plans feel draining. Relationships shift. And you don’t quite know how to explain what’s wrong, even to yourself. Instead of focusing on physical symptoms, I’m sharing what this transition has been like for me mentally and emotionally as I’ve moved through perimenopause toward menopause. The fog. The need to pull back. The guilt around saying no. And the quiet grief that can come with changing friendships, priorities, and capacity. I talk about pulling back socially and professionally, prioritizing sleep, stepping away from a business that no longer fit, and giving myself time to stabilize instead of forcing clarity. This episode is my reminder to you, and to myself, that pulling back doesn’t mean you’re failing or quitting. It means your capacity has changed. And giving yourself space may be exactly what helps you find your footing again. In this episode, I talk about: 🎤 Why pulling back socially was one of the first signs something was shifting for me 🎤 The pressure to keep showing up when you don’t feel like yourself 🎤 How alcohol, sleep, and energy started to affect me differently 🎤 Friendship changes and the grief that can come with them 🎤 Why stabilizing myself mattered more than pushing forward 🎤 Letting go of goals that belonged to an earlier version of me 🎤 What it feels like to slowly start coming back online in a more grounded way   If you’re in a season where your life feels quieter, slower, or smaller than it used to, I want you to know you’re not broken and you’re not behind. You’re moving through a transition that asks for rest, honesty, and a lot more self-compassion than we’re used to giving ourselves. If you know a woman who’s in this phase and might feel less alone hearing this, please share the episode with her. Thank you all so much for listening! It genuinely means a lot to know that my journey, and what I’m learning along the way, helps you too.  Hey friends!  Today I'm back sharing about what’s changed over the past few months, including bringing a new puppy into our lives, starting a GLP-1 (Ozempic) and what's changed since we last talked.  I share what surprised me most about starting a GLP-1, especially how quieting food noise and alcohol cravings gave me back mental space I didn’t realize I’d lost. I also share about the judgment that comes with this medication, how I navigated talking to my doctor, what my bloodwork showed, and why I see GLP-1s as a tool, not a shortcut. I end this episode with a shift that has affected my energy, focus, and how I’m thinking about my business and this podcast heading into 2026. This episode is my personal experience, not medical advice. If anything here resonates, talk to your healthcare provider and do what feels right for you. If you’re a midlife woman juggling hormones, a business, family, and trying to feel like yourself again, this one’s for you.Links & resources mentioned: Goose on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goose_the_minibernadoodle DOOU (Canadian online health service): https://doou.ca Chalene Johnson: https://www.chalenejohnson.com   Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched!Start for FREEDisclaimer: This post contains affiliate links.   Yup. I said it. I’m officially sleeping in a different room than my husband—and I’ve never felt better. In this unfiltered episode, I share why we made the decision, how it’s improved everything from my hormones to our relationship, and why you might want to rethink the “you must share a bed” rule too. If you’re exhausted, moody, snappy, and one more night of snoring might send you over the edge… this one’s for you. ✅ What You’ll Hear in This Episode How one head cold turned into the best sleep decision ever Why I hate the term “sleep divorce” (and what we call it instead) How perimenopause made me hypersensitive to sound, temperature, and breathing noises What happened when I asked my husband for my own room How we stay connected and intimate without sleeping in the same bed The sleep + mood connection you’re probably underestimating Why this isn’t “giving up on marriage”—it’s actually saving our sanity Note: This episode was recorded earlier for a previous project I’ve since closed. I’m talking about the part of parenthood no one really prepares you for — when your kids grow up, move out, and start their own lives… and you’re left holding all the feelings. Yes, there’s freedom. Yes, there’s excitement. But there’s also grief — and if you’re going through it too, you’re not crazy. It’s a lot, especially when it hits during perimenopause (hello, identity crisis on top of it all 🙃). In this episode: Why it feels like they disappear overnight The guilt, joy, and sadness that all coexist How I’m navigating this new chapter And why those “goodnight mom ❤️” texts mean more than ever If you're in this stage too, I see you. And if you’re not there yet, this is your gentle reminder to soak up the messy, loud, chaotic now — because one day, you’ll miss it. Thank you all so much for listening!  This one’s hard to record — but it needed to be said. Our family dog of 9 years, Ozzy passed away this week, and this episode is me walking through the grief, the story of what happened, and everything I wish more people talked about when it comes to losing a pet. If you’ve ever had to say goodbye to a dog (or any pet) you loved, this episode is for you. It’s about the quiet after the bark, the guilt, the firsts that break your heart — and the little things you wish you could do just one more time. This episode is personal. And it’s real.  Oh hey there — today’s episode of Walking and Talking with Me is a bit of a catch-up after a little break. I’m finally back out walking, and we’ve got some nice weather for once. I’m out here without my dog today (which is rare!) and just wanted to have a real conversation with you about what’s been going on. First, a quick update on something new I’ve been loving: my weighted vest. It’s a 16-pound vest from Zelus (LINK) l that I found through my Amazon shop. I’ve been using it during my walks and it’s been a game-changer.  Then, I dive into what’s really been front and center for me lately — my super fun journey through perimenopause. I give you my updates on hormone therapy experience — the ups, the adjustments — from progesterone and estrogen to recently adding in a small dose of testosterone. I share what it’s felt like, what’s been working, and what I’m still figuring out. One thing I want to really stress today: finding the right healthcare providers makes all the difference. It takes persistence. It can be frustrating. But advocating for yourself is critical, and I walk you through some of my own experiences with that too. We also get into something that’s not talked about enough — the loss of oxytocin during perimenopause — and how that can affect us emotionally. It's real, and it’s another reminder why self-compassion is so important right now. And before we wrap up, I talk about something that’s been hitting me lately: aging really is a privilege. It’s easy to get caught up in the struggles and changes, but there's beauty in this season of life too. Thanks for walking and talking with me today. I’d love to hear your thoughts or your own experiences — send me a DM on Instagram! And stay tuned — I’ll have more updates and conversations coming your way soon.Quick reminder before we dive in — I am not a doctor. This is just me sharing my personal experience with perimenopause and what’s worked for me. Please don’t take anything here as medical advice. Always, always talk to a qualified healthcare provider about your own health needs. In this episode, I dive into the real, unfiltered truth about starting an online business in 2025. Things have changed drastically from the early days of online business, and I’m breaking down the biggest misconceptions, mistakes, and the strategies you actually need to succeed. Key Takeaways: ✔️ It’s Not as Easy as It Used to Be – Gone are the days of throwing up a website and making money overnight. The industry is more saturated than ever, which means strategy and consistency are non-negotiable. ✔️ Social Media Won’t Do the Work for You – Just posting a few times isn’t enough. You need a plan, engaging content, and a long-term commitment to building trust with your audience. ✔️ Branding and Website Matter More Than Ever – A poorly designed website and DIY branding will turn potential customers away. Professional, cohesive branding is key in 2025. ✔️ You Must Be Hands-On in Your Business – You can hire help, but no one will care about your business as much as you do. If you’re not actively involved, it will show. ✔️ Passion and Longevity Matter – If you’re just in this for the money, you’ll struggle. Building a business takes time, and you need a genuine passion to push through the ups and downs. I also share my personal journey—how I transitioned from network marketing to coaching to my done-for-you services today. My biggest lesson? Alignment and intention are EVERYTHING when it comes to long-term success. 🎧 Listen now and get the real scoop on what it takes to start and grow an online business today. 💬 Got thoughts? Hey friends, welcome back to How It’s Really Going. Today, I’m walking and talking through a snowy morning here in southern Ontario (wish you could see it—it’s gorgeous!) and sharing my unfiltered thoughts about a topic that’s been weighing on me: alcohol. From my “Fun Shana” days in my 20s to where I stand now in my mid-40s, I’m opening up about how my relationship with alcohol has changed, the shame spirals I sometimes experience, and the impact it has on my health, sleep, and overall well-being. This isn’t about judgment—of myself or anyone else—but about reflection. I’m trying to figure out what role alcohol plays in my life, especially now that the Surgeon General has now stated there are no safe amounts and whether it’s time for a change. If you’ve ever questioned your own relationship with alcohol, this episode is for you. Let’s talk about the societal pressures, the way our bodies change with age, and the balance between enjoying a glass of wine and feeling good about our choices. I also touch on: How alcohol affects my ADHD brain (spoiler: it’s complicated). The trade-offs between relaxation and those dreaded hangovers. Setting an example for my kids when it comes to drinking. Why I’m experimenting with reducing alcohol, and what alternatives I’ve been trying (mocktails and Diet Coke, anyone?). I’d love to hear from you—what’s your relationship with alcohol like? Are you in the “never again” camp, somewhere in the middle, or just trying to figure it out like me? Let’s keep the conversation going. In this episode, I’m trying something new and taking the podcast on the go—literally! Inspired by my friend and fellow podcaster Chalene Johnson, I decided to combine my love for walking with sharing my thoughts in a more casual and authentic way. Like many of you, I’ve struggled to find time to sit down and record. This new format feels like a win-win: getting fresh air and movement while connecting with you. I dive into what it’s like navigating life as a midlife entrepreneur, sharing my own journey and some advice for content creation. I share my advice to my friend Sarah Baldwin you can find her HERE I know how hard it can be to stay patient when building an audience, so I talk about what’s worked for me. I also touch on the never-ending balancing act between work and personal life, the importance of taking breaks, and my goals for the new year. Of course, there are a few off-the-cuff moments too! I share a little rant about dog-walking etiquette, chat about wearing a weighted vest to maintain bone health, and how I’m trying to stay grounded amid societal pressures about fitness. Plus, I reflect on holiday plans and the lessons I’ve learned as an entrepreneur this year. Here’s a quick breakdown of what I cover: 00:00 Introduction and the challenges I’ve faced with podcasting 01:14 The inspiration I got from Chalene Johnson 02:11 How I’m experimenting with walking and talking 04:18 My advice for aspiring influencers and entrepreneurs 08:06 Balancing work and personal life (hint: it’s not easy, but it’s doable!) 10:26 A mini rant about dog-walking etiquette 12:48 Holiday plans and reflecting on my entrepreneurial journey 20:16 Health and fitness goals, including why I wear a weighted vest 25:48 Wrapping up with thoughts on the future This episode is a little different, a little raw, but that’s what makes it fun. Hey there, and welcome back to How It’s Really Going! After a long break, I’m here to share what’s been on my mind and what’s next for this podcast. If you’ve been around since the early days, you’ll know this space has evolved over the years—from Girlfriend’s Guide to Network Marketing to Keeping It Real with Shana Recker, and now to this version: a mix of life, business, and everything in between. The Journey So Far I started podcasting back in 2016, aiming to share honest and vulnerable conversations about business, life, and personal growth. It’s been a rollercoaster. Over the years, I’ve shifted from network marketing to online business coaching, to doing done-for-you services in graphic design and Kajabi, which has been my primary focus for the past year and a half. It’s been refreshing to work behind the scenes, supporting amazing clients without the constant pressure of social media. Why I’m Back Even when I’ve stepped away, I couldn’t stop thinking about this podcast. It’s like therapy for me—a way to connect, share, and help others feel less alone in their journeys. I’m feeling more stable and ready to commit, even if it’s just once or twice a month. This podcast is going to be a space for real talk: about business, entrepreneurship, life as a midlife woman navigating hormones, parenting adult kids, and even the ups and downs of creativity. Hey everyone! Welcome back! In this episode, I get super real about the ups and downs of friendships. After listening to a Simon Sinek podcast, I felt inspired to share my own struggles with making and keeping friends, especially during perimenopause and menopause. ADHD has definitely turned up the volume on my fear of rejection too. I talk about how important community is and how the lack of close friendships has really hit me. You'll hear about my overthinking and why I sometimes pull back from social interactions, even though I know how awesome it feels to connect. This episode is all about being aware, putting in the effort, and pushing past fears to keep those important friendships alive.  Let's get real about how tricky friendships can be and figure out how to keep those connections strong. Today I share how I'm learning (emphases on the ING) how by letting go of trying to control everything and embracing change actually makes life easier. I'd say it's one of the benefits of aging for sure. The older we get the less we care so much about shit.In this episode I talk about ditching overthinking and trusting your instincts more, about opening up to outcomes outside of your expectations. Join me for a real, no-bs conversation about  surrendering to life's flow. Thank you all so much for listening! It takes a lot of effort to do an online business. I, for example, am not quite sure that I would be ready for such a thing. However, a friend of mine has experience in this business. I used to work for him and help him with the paperwork. Can you imagine, he didn't know there was this website for working with pdf documents. How he used to do document management is unclear.
