St. Peter’s church is in the centre of the Village of St. Peter’s, Broadstairs. It is largely of the Norman period in construction and is linked to St. John’s Church, Margate and St. Lawrence Church, Ramsgate. These three churches were chapels of ease to the mother church of St. Mary’s, Minster. There is no definite date for the original construction of St Peter’s but 1050 is quoted for St. John’s and 1062 for St. Lawrence therefore it is likely that between these dates St. Peter’s Chapel was constructed. The South aisle was the first chapel at St Peters, standing alone, but the church was enlarged to the north in 1180-1185.The present building has a late Norman nave and an Early English Chancel. The battlemented tower and the south porch are in the Perpendicular architectural style from the 15th Century. The tower is a prominent feature and, for long the highest point in Thanet, it was used as a Naval signalling station in Napoleonic times and still claims the right to fly the White Ensign.https://stpeterinthanet.org.uk
Recorded live in Morelli's whilst customers enjoyed Coffee, tea and of course Ice Cream.Joe tells us about the history of Morelli's and where it is now and how the ice cream is made and about the staff who make it happen. The first Morelli's Ice Cream Parlour in the UK was opened by Mario on the Broadstairs seafront above the picturesque Viking Bay in Kent. Morelli’s in Broadstairs has, under the guidance of the Morelli family become a Mecca for gelato in the UK - set off by it’s iconic 1950’s flying canopy, Soda Fountain, original Lloyd Loom chairs and pink leatherette parlour seating.Mario’s son Joe was the first to serve 18 flavours of ice cream following the Parlour upgrade and expansion in 1959, followed by Marino who continued in his footsteps and made Morelli's what it is today..Every morning since 1907, in a tradition continued to this day, the ice cream at Morelli's is made fresh in every store.https://www.morellisgelato.comMORELLI'S 14 VICTORIA PARADE BROADSTAIRS, KENT UNITED KINGDOM CT10 1QS

We are all volunteers who choose to work together for the good of our town. Why we started back in 2012We came together to do positive things, where we can see ways we can help, to make our town even better than we already know it is. We love Broadstairs. We know that most of the people who live here do too and that visitors often fall in love with it from the moment they arrive. It's a great place. What we doSome projects are quite simple to bring to life, some take more planning and organisation and some things we choose not to take on, because we are all volunteers, we can only do what we can do. If you'd like to give an hour, share your skills to support any of our activities we'd be delighted. Why we need help from volunteers of all kindsThere are some very specific skills you may use in your every day life that we always need more of, if you're a whizz at social media, design, artwork, project management or sourcing and applying for funding - and you'd like to put those skills to good use to support your community - we'd love to chat!We also rely on the generosity of time and skills donated to all the projects we manage by local people. There is an extraordinary willingness to volunteer in Broadstairs, not just for Town Team, but for the many other volunteer run community groups that make things happen. You can read more about our friends who support us here.We love to collaborate. We also put interested parties together within and for our community, to help make things happen for our town.https://www.broadstairstownteam.org.uk

Martin Cheek Mosaics

Martin Cheek Mosaics

2026-02-1321:41

Martin Cheek is a versatile mosaic artist who initially founded the technique of incorporating glass fusions into his mosaics. In so doing, he essentially transformed the art and added unique textural interest to his work. The intricately detailed glass fusions, all made by Martin in his workshop, take his mosaics to another dimension, adding varying degrees of reflectivity and energy, something not easily obtained using traditional mosaic materials.Visit Martins website www.shopmartincheek.com Youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/@TheMartincheekMartin is originally from Birmingham, England, and was educated at Exeter College of Art and Design. He made award-winning films as a student, worked on several puppet animation projects including The Wind in the Willows, Paddington Bear, Noddy in Toyland and Portland Bill, before setting up his own production company, Cheeky Films, Ltd. He also served for many years as a part-time lecturer at the Royal College of Art and was an art critic for The Daily Express.

Today we talk with the Mayor of Broadstairs Mike GarnerAbout The Mayor – Cllr Mike Garner Cllr Garner was the first ever Green Party councillor elected in 2019 onto both the Town and District councils representing the people in the ward of St Peter’s, a role he has thoroughly enjoyed. In 2020 he became leader of the Green Party at Thanet District Council. He is now particularly pleased to be the first Green Party councillor to have been elected as a Mayor in Thanet but acknowledges that it is not a party-political role. Instead, he recognises it as an opportunity to work with all councillors, council officers, and residents to make the town a place to be proud to live in and one which visitors want to stay and come back to.
