Welcome to Best of Redmond! Redmond's twice-weekly newsletter and podcast about all the amazing things happening in Redmond for the next seven days!📰 Redmond Is One of the Hottest Moving Spots in the Country Redmond’s 98052 zip code just ranked as the second most in-demand place for movers in the U.S. in February. A MovingPlace study looked at nearly 500,000 relocations and found 243 moves landed right here. A lot of that comes back to tech, with Microsoft and other companies continuing to pull people into the area. It’s not just a trickle either, it’s steady growth. If you’ve noticed more new faces around town lately… yeah, there’s a reason for that.🌿 Learn to Forage Right Here in Redmond There’s a hands-on class on Sunday, April 5 from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Redmond Library that dives into edible and medicinal plants found around the PNW. You’ll learn how to identify over 10 local plants, plus how to grow and use them at home. They’re even doing tastings and letting you build your own tea blend to take with you. It’s free and first come, first served. Show up a little early if you want a seat.🍻 Free Bingo Night at Flatstick Pub Flatstick Pub is running their weekly bingo night on Wednesday, April 8 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, and yeah, it’s free to play. They’re giving away gift cards, brewery swag, and other prizes throughout the night. It’s one of those easy midweek things where you can just show up, grab a drink, and hang out for a couple hours. If you’ve never been, it’s a pretty low-pressure way to check the place out.🎲 Late Night Board Games at Uncle’s Uncle’s Games is doing their open game night on Saturday, April 4 from 8:00 to 11:00 PM at Redmond Town Center. You can jump into their demo games or just bring your own and play with friends. It’s super casual, no sign-up or structure, just tables and people playing whatever they’re into. If you’ve been meaning to dust off a game at home, this is a good excuse to actually use it.🐾 Bark in the Park (Yes, There’s an Egg Hunt for Dogs) Bark in the Park is happening Friday, April 3 from 4:00 to 5:30 PM at Farrel-McWhirter Park, and it’s basically a spring event built for you and your dog. There’s a dog-friendly egg hunt, treat stations, sniff spots, and even a little Easter bonnet contest if you’re feeling ambitious. It’s free, but you do need to register ahead of time. Bring a leash and be ready for mud if it rains.🚲 Bicycle Bling Cycling season is ramping up, and there are a couple things worth knowing about. The 12-week Cascade Training Series kicks off April 11 if you’re thinking about longer endurance rides this year. And if you just want something social, there’s the Eastside Easter Eggstravaganza ride leaving Perrigo Park on April 5 for a group spin through the valley. If your bike’s been sitting all winter, this might be your sign.🕰️ Redmond History Minute Okay, it's time for the Redmond History Minute, where we share an interesting piece of history, trivia, or tidbit about life in and around Redmond.Everyone knows Microsoft is headquartered in Redmond. But which tech company actually got to Redmond FIRST?A) Microsoft B) Nintendo C) Amazon D) AtariAnswer revealed at the bottom of this newsletter.🔮 Redmond Rumor Mill So here’s one that keeps popping up in conversations… there’s apparently a Portland pie shop known for sweet and savory hand pies that’s been scouting the Eastside since early 2026. And the interesting part? Leary Way keeps getting mentioned as a possible landing spot. Now, we don’t know if they’ve signed anything, picked a location, or if this is just early scouting talk. But if it does happen… what spot do you think they’d take over?If you've got a guess or have heard something, head to our Facebook page at facebook.com/BestOfRedmond and drop it in the "Redmond Rumor Mill Guesses" post.🗳️ Your Picks: Best house painter in Redmond Alright, that's it for this week.Head on over to facebook.com/BestOfRedmond, find the post called "Your Picks," and drop your vote in the comments. We want to know who you think is the best house painter in Redmond.📻 Don't Miss the Podcast If you enjoyed this newsletter, you're gonna love the companion podcast. Find it at bestofredmond.com. We'll see you in the next one... or maybe before then, walking around Redmond.🎯 History Minute Answer The answer is B – NintendoNintendo of America moved from New York to Redmond in 1982. Microsoft didn’t relocate from Bellevue until 1986, four years later. So before Redmond became “Microsoft town,” it was actually home to the company behind Donkey Kong and Mario. Kind of flips the usual story people assume about the city.
Welcome to Best of Redmond! Redmond's twice-weekly newsletter and podcast about all the amazing things happening in Redmond for the next seven days!📰 Light Rail Now Crosses Lake Washington Okay, so this is a big one. As of last week, the Sound Transit 2 Line is officially running across Lake Washington, connecting Downtown Redmond to Seattle for the first time by rail. This is the first time anywhere in the world that light rail runs across a floating bridge, which is kind of wild when you think about it. It also means you can now bike to the Downtown Redmond station, hop on the train, and be in Seattle without dealing with traffic. If you're trying it out, grab coffee at Five Stones or River Trail Roasters right by the stops.🎧 90s Silent Disco at the Library There’s a 90s-themed silent disco happening Wednesday, April 1 from 6:00 to 7:30pm at the Redmond Library. They’re handing out wireless headphones so you can pick your music channel and dance… quietly… while everyone else is doing the same thing. It’s part of their adult reading program, but honestly this feels more like a throwback party with snacks and costumes encouraged. If you still have flannel or a denim jacket, now’s your moment.☕ Small Business Saturday at SoulFood Small Business Saturday is happening Saturday, April 4 from 9:00am to 12:00pm at SoulFood CoffeeHouse. They host this the first Saturday of every month, bringing in local vendors and small businesses right into the coffee shop space. You can grab your usual drink and browse everything from handmade goods to local services while you’re there. Go early if you want first pick before things start selling out.🎉 Old Fire House Teen Center Celebration There’s a community celebration happening Saturday, April 4 from 2:00 to 6:00pm at the Old Fire House Teen Center. They’re basically saying goodbye to the current building before it gets redeveloped, and they’re inviting the community to share memories, photos, and stories from over the years. If you grew up here, this place probably meant something to you. Might be worth stopping by just to see it one last time.👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Eggcellent at the Farm Eggcellent at the Farm is happening Saturday, April 4 from 10:00am to 12:00pm at Farrel-McWhirter Park. This one’s for kids ages 2 to 12, and they’re going all out with egg hunts, pony rides, crafts, and even a scavenger hunt through the forest. There’s also snacks and music, so it’s basically a full morning activity. Dress for mud… seriously.🐾 Dog Easter Egg Hunt at Petco There’s a dog-friendly Easter egg hunt happening Saturday, April 4 starting at 2:00pm at your local Petco. They’re hiding treat-filled eggs around the store and your dog gets to sniff them out, which honestly sounds like chaos in the best way. It’s while supplies last, so it’s more of a casual drop-in than a structured event. Bring a leash and maybe don’t show up right at peak crowd if your dog gets overwhelmed.🚴 Bike + Light Rail Just Became a Real Thing Hey Redmond riders… this is a big one. As of last week, the Sound Transit 2 Line is officially running across Lake Washington, which means you can now bike from Downtown Redmond straight onto light rail and get to Seattle without touching traffic. This is the first time light rail has ever crossed a floating bridge anywhere, and yeah, it’s as cool as it sounds. The Downtown Redmond and Marymoor stops make this super accessible if you’re riding in. If you're testing the route, hit Five Stones Coffee or River Trail Roasters right by the stations.🔮 Redmond Rumor Mill Okay, here’s what we’re hearing this week… a boutique pickleball club might be coming somewhere near the 164th Ave corridor. Not a big-box gym. More like private courts, a bar, monthly memberships… kind of a whole social scene built around pickleball. We don’t know the exact location yet, timing, or even what it’ll be called. But if this is real… where do you think it’s going? If you've got a guess or have heard something, head to our Facebook page at facebook.com/BestOfRedmond and drop it in the "Redmond Rumor Mill Guesses" post.🗳️ Your Picks: Best arborist/tree trimmer in Redmond Alright, that's it for this week. Welcome to Best of Redmond! Redmond's twice-weekly newsletter and podcast about all the amazing things happening in Redmond for the next seven days!📰 The Penny Problem… Solved (Finally Makes Cents)Okay, so starting mid-June, Washington is officially done pretending pennies matter. A new law signed March 23 lets retailers round cash purchases to the nearest nickel when making change. If your total ends in 1 or 2 cents, it rounds down. If it ends in 3 or 4, it rounds up… you get the idea. Cards aren’t affected, just cash. This is happening because pennies basically disappeared last year and stores were already improvising. It’s optional, but expect to see it more. Honestly… it kinda makes cents.🎵 Howard Brothers Live at SoulFoodThe Howard Brothers are playing live on Friday, March 27 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at SoulFood CoffeeHouse. These guys are identical twins doing this folk-Americana thing, but with a mix of jazz and classical backgrounds, so it’s not your typical acoustic set. It’s one of those shows where you can sit, sip something, and actually listen without yelling over a crowd. SoulFood keeps it super low-key, which is part of the appeal. Get there a little early if you want a good seat.📚 Meet the Author: ADHD Field Guide TalkThere’s an author event happening Thursday, March 26 at 6:30 PM at Brick & Mortar Books. Cate Osborn is coming in to talk about her new book, The ADHD Field Guide for Adults, and do a signing after. It’s free, but they do ask for an RSVP so they know how many people to expect. This is one of those smaller, more conversational events where you can actually ask questions and chat a bit. If you’ve ever wondered how people actually manage ADHD day-to-day, this could be worth your time.👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Kids Garden Science at the LibraryThere’s a kids science event on Saturday, March 28 from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Redmond Library. Master Gardener Maggie is leading a hands-on session about how plants grow, and kids get to take home their own activity kit after. It’s geared toward ages 5 to 12, and they only have materials for about 25 kids, so showing up early matters. No registration needed, just walk in. Good option if your kid likes getting their hands dirty and asking a million questions.🐾 Slatmill Fun Run for DogsThere’s a dog-focused workout event happening Tuesday morning from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Pickles Playland. It’s called a Slatmill Fun Run, which is basically a dog-powered treadmill where your pup controls the pace. The instructor, Brian, helps dogs learn how to use it safely, whether they’re brand new or already full of energy. It’s open to all dogs, and you can even book two at once if you’ve got a pair. Email ahead to reserve a spot so you’re not just showing up and waiting around.🎲 Strategy Board Game Meetup at Uncle’sThere’s a strategy-focused board game meetup on Saturday, March 28 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at Uncle’s Games in Redmond Town Center. It’s part of a group called “board game girlies,” open to women and non-binary folks in their 20s and 30s. They split into beginner, medium, and more intense strategy tables, so you don’t need to be a hardcore gamer to join. You can bring your own games or just jump into one. RSVP is required since they organize tables ahead of time.🚴 Bike Bling: Big Week for CyclistsAlright cyclists, here’s what’s going on right now. Registration for the Cascade Training Series closes Sunday, April 5, so this is your last real week to jump in if you’re thinking about it. Also, quick heads up… there are long-term detours on the Eastrail near NE 85th and Slater in Kirkland, so plan your routes accordingly. And one more thing… RAMROD, which is that big Ride Around Mount Rainier in One Day event, is officially not happening in 2026 due to permit issues. Yeah, kinda a bummer. If that ride’s your thing, you’re looking at 2027 now.🕰️ Redmond History MinuteOkay, it's time for the Redmond History Minute, where we share an interesting piece of history, trivia, or tidbit about life in and around Redmond. In 1916, Lake Washington was permanently lowered by how many feet when the Ship Canal opened?A) 3 feetB) 9 feetC) 15 feetD) They actually raised itAnswer revealed at the bottom of this newsletter.🔮 Redmond Rumor MillOkay, here’s one we’ve been hearing more and more lately… what if Redmond got a permanent food hall near the Saturday Market? The idea floating around is a year-round setup with 6 to 8 rotating local vendors all under one roof. Kind of like the market, but not just seasonal. Now, to be clear… nothing’s been officially announced, and we don’t know locations, timelines, or who would be involved. But if it did happen… where would you want it?If you've got a guess or have heard something, head to our Facebook page atfacebook.com/BestOfRedmond and drop it in the "Redmond Rumor Mill Guesses" post.🗳️ Your Picks: Best Handyman in RedmondAlright, that's it for this week.Head on over to facebook.com/BestOfRedmond, find the post called "Your Picks," and drop your vote in the comments. Find it at bestofredmond.com.We'll see you in the next one... or maybe before then, walking around Redmond.🎯 History Minute AnswerThe answer is B – 9 feetWhen the Ballard Locks opened in 1916, they lowered Lake Washington by 9 feet to match Lake Union's level. This dried up the Black River, wiped out the salmon run there, and exposed a ton of new shoreline. It also reshaped the Eastside completely. Fun fact… parts of Kirkland’s downtown were actually underwater before all that happened.
Welcome to Best of Redmond! Redmond's twice-weekly newsletter and podcast about all the amazing things happening inRedmond for the next seven days!📰 The Case of the Missing CrowsOkay, so something weird has been going on… the massive flock of crows that used to take over UW Bothell every night has completely vanished. For the first time in years, the wetlands are quiet, and nobody really knew where they went. Then people started spotting huge groups flying the wrong direction at dusk. Turns out, the “murder” didn’t disappear… it relocated. Thousands of crows are now roosting near Sixty Acres Park and Sammamish Valley in Redmond. If you want to see it for yourself, head toward Willows Road around sunset… it’s loud.🧠 Trivia Night at SoulFood CoffeeHouseTrivia Night is happening Wednesday, March 25 at 6:00 pm at SoulFood CoffeeHouse on Redmond Way. The lineup includes headliner Scott Losse with Mike Coletta and host Dani Marie. It’s a smaller wine lounge setup, so you’re close to the stage and it feels more like a live room than a big theater. Grab tickets ahead of time since these tend to sell out.📚 Author Event at Brick & Mortar BooksA live author event is happening Friday, March 27 at 6:30 pm at Brick & Mortar Books in Redmond Town Center. Lish McBride is launching her new YA thriller and will be in conversation with Marissa Meyer, who’s a #1 New York Times bestselling author. It leans a little spooky with murder mystery vibes, but it’s still accessible even if you’re not deep into YA. Seating is limited, so get there early.👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Beat the Bunny 5K & Kids DashBeat the Bunny is happening Saturday, March 28 starting at 9:30 am at the Redmond Senior & Community Center. Locals called it "the blacktop." It connected Kirkland to Redmond in 1912, before either city had much of anything. That road is now part of the street grid, but it was revolutionary at the time.
Welcome to Best of Redmond! Redmond's twice-weekly newsletter and podcast about all the amazing things happening in Redmond for the next seven days!📰 Blazing Bagels Shuts Down All Locations Blazing Bagels closed all its locations this week after filing for bankruptcy, and yeah, this one caught a lot of people off guard. They had spots across the Eastside including Redmond, and were a pretty reliable go-to for a quick breakfast sandwich or a dozen bagels for the office. The company hasn't said much publicly yet beyond the filing, so details are still thin. If you haven't already figured out your backup bagel spot, now's a good time to start thinking about it.🎵 Bach to Rock Live at NW Brewing Bach to Rock bands are playing live at NW Brewing this Thursday, March 19 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. These are student musicians doing everything from rock covers to newer stuff, and the vibe is pretty casual... a little loud, usually packed with proud parents and curious regulars. It's designed for adults 55 and older and you don't need any music background at all. Get there a little early since library programs tend to fill up fast.🚲 Bicycle Bling We got a message from a listener this week that said: "Hey guys, love the pod. I'm actually just recovering from a bit of a health scare and my doctor gave me the green light to start some light cardio. I'm a bit wobbly and looking for the absolute flattest, widest, and least intense spot to ride in Redmond. I'm not ready for the Lycra-clad speedsters on the main trails yet... where should I go?"First off, glad you're back on the saddle. If you want to avoid the Tour de France energy on the main Sammamish River Trail during peak hours, head over to Farrel-McWhirter Park. There's a connector trail that runs between Farrel-McWhirter and the Puget Power Trail, and it's remarkably flat... none of that hilly Redmond Ridge stuff where your heart rate spikes just looking at it. The vibe out there is more "people strolling around looking at farm animals" than serious cycling, so you won't feel any pressure to keep up with anyone. Park at the main Farrel-McWhirter lot, say hi to the goats for a little therapy, and then do an out-and-back toward Avondale. It's paved, it's wide, and it's usually way quieter than the Marymoor stretch.🎤 Cards & Karaoke at Marymoor Village Cards & Karaoke is this Saturday, March 21 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at the Redmond Community Center at Marymoor Village. It's part card games, part sing-along, and it's set up as a casual hang... no pressure to grab the mic if you don't want to. This one's 14 and up, spots are limited, and it'll run you $16 to $20 depending on when you register. Sign up ahead of time so you don't get shut out.🕰 Redmond History Minute Okay, it's time for the Redmond History Minute, where we share an interesting piece of history, trivia, or tidbit about life in and around Redmond.Video game company Valve, creator of Steam and Half-Life, was founded in which Eastside city?A) Redmond B) Bellevue C) Kirkland D) WoodinvilleAnswer revealed at the bottom of this newsletter.🔮 Redmond Rumor Mill So here's one we're hearing right now... there might be a Nashville hot chicken spot getting shopped around in downtown Redmond. The standalone hot chicken thing has been blowing up in suburban areas, and apparently the numbers are working well enough that someone local is seriously looking at it. What we don't know is who's behind it, where exactly it would go, or how far along the deal actually is. Do we finally get a legit hot chicken place here?If you've got a guess or have heard something, head to our Facebook page at facebook.com/BestOfRedmond and drop it in the "Redmond Rumor Mill Guesses" post.🗳 Your Picks: Best Oil Change in Redmond Alright, that's it for this week.Head on over to facebook.com/BestOfRedmond, find the post called "Your Picks," and drop your vote in the comments. Welcome to Best of Redmond! Redmond's twice-weekly newsletter and podcast about all the amazing things happening in Redmond for the next seven days!📰 Motley Zoo Needs Your Help — Tournament or NotMotley Zoo Animal Rescue just got knocked out of March Muttness, a national fundraising tournament for animal shelters. They lost their Second Chance bracket matchup against the Humane Society of El Paso, so they're out of the competition. But here's the thing — their donation page is still open and every dollar goes straight to the rescue. Motley Zoo is a legit 501(c)(3) based right here in the Redmond/Monroe area and they've placed thousands of animals in homes since 2009. If you want to throw them a few bucks, head to their page at app.tournaments.donorcharm.org/campaign/W5adr/total#about-bigamer-sec.👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Shrek Jr. Is Coming to Redmond and It Looks Like a BlastThe Redmond Academy of Theatre Arts is putting on Shrek The Musical Jr. starting this Friday, and it runs through the end of the month. If you've got kids, this is the one. It's got ogres, fairytale misfits, a wisecracking donkey, and the whole story about finding where you belong. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students and seniors. Shows run Friday through Sunday most weekends at 18001 NE 76th St, Suite 100. Barnes played for Reign FC from 2013 to 2025 before retiring. It's free, there are snacks, and they're doing prize drawings. The event runs 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Seattle Marriott Redmond, 7401 164th Avenue NE.🚲 Bicycle BlingThe Jerry Baker Memorial Velodrome at Marymoor Park is getting ready for its 2026 season, and if you've never been out there to watch — or ride — you're missing something genuinely weird and cool. It's the only velodrome in the entire state of Washington, which is a big part of why Redmond carries the title of Bicycle Capital. Track cycling has its own tight-knit community, its own physics, and honestly its own vocabulary. Keep an eye on the velodrome schedule as the season ramps up — it's free to watch and worth at least one visit if you've never seen what happens when a cyclist leans that hard into a banked turn.🎤 Karaoke Night at SoulFood CoffeeHouseSoulFood CoffeeHouse is doing karaoke this Friday, March 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. Come alone, bring friends, belt something embarrassing — all of it is welcome. It's at 15748 Redmond Way, which means you can walk over, do your thing, and be home by 8:30. No word on whether they judge you for picking a Celine Dion song, but our guess is they don't.🎨 Adult Art Club at the Redmond LibraryIf you've got a project you've been meaning to work on, the Redmond Library has a casual art club meeting on Sunday, March 22 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring whatever you're working on — painting, knitting, drawing, whatever counts as your thing — and just hang out with other people who are doing the same. No registration required, all arts and crafts welcome, adults only.🕰 Redmond History MinuteOkay, it's time for the Redmond History Minute, where we share an interesting piece of history, trivia, or tidbit about life in and around Redmond. In 2008, archaeologists discovered artifacts at the Bear Creek Site in Redmond dating back how far?A) 2,000 years B) 6,000 years C) 12,000 years D) Last TuesdayAnswer revealed at the bottom of this newsletter.🔮 Redmond Rumor MillSo we've been hearing something interesting floating around about downtown Redmond. Word is there's a high-end board game café concept — think private rooms, craft beer on tap, 500-plus games on the shelf — that's been eyeing a downtown location. Places like this have done really well in Capitol Hill, and if someone's actually looking at Redmond for this, that would be a pretty big deal for the downtown scene. Nothing confirmed yet. No lease signed, no name, no address. But it's being talked about. So here's our question: would you actually go? What kind of games would you want on the shelf? If you've got a guess or have heard something, head to our Facebook page at facebook.com/BestOfRedmond and drop it in the "Redmond Rumor Mill Guesses" post.🗳 Your Picks: Best Auto Shop in RedmondAlright, that's it for this week.Head on over to facebook.com/BestOfRedmond, find the post called "Your Picks," and drop your vote in the comments. Welcome to Best of Redmond! Redmond's twice-weekly newsletter and podcast about all the amazing things happening in Redmond for the next seven days!🚌 Redmond Just Launched a Free Electric Shuttle – And It's Already RunningSo Redmond has a new free shuttle service and it launched this week. It's called RedLink, and it covers downtown, Education Hill, and the southeast part of the city. You request a ride through the Circuit app – same company that runs Bellevue's BellHop, which people actually use.
