Description

World in a Frame is a video/podcast where we discuss movies.
We did not know each other, we come from different countries and are of different ages. We just shared an interest in cinema and wanted to see if our differences effected the way we understand and interpret movies. There are many other good podcasts around about movies, but participants are usually same age and/or same country. We wanted to try something different.

We watched this lebanese movie by Nadine Labaki, and it certainly gave rise to some discussion - and friendly banter - because we did not agree on some aspects of this movie. Can you make a comedy about such serious matters as the conflict in Lebanon, and how well does this movie succeed? In many ways this is meant as a mainstream movie targeted for general audience, and that may also contribue in how we perceive it?It was a fun discussion about a serious topic, and just shows that we care because movies matter!
Thomas picked this movie for us to watch, and we had a rather intereseting discussion about morality, japanese culture and other stuff. Please be warned, that we very quickly goes into spoiler mode, so if you want to watch the movie without knowing the plot, its best to listen to the episode after watching the movie.
This time Julia chose a real cinematic masterpiece, Metropolis by Fritz Lang. For some of us it was a first watch and for some of us has seen it several times. This of course made for an interesting discussion, and as some may know it is Thomas' favourite movie, so of course he could also provide with some extra insight behind this monumental film.If you are listening to the podcast version, the full version can be found here: https://youtu.be/L4RZpYHwwuM
Filipp once again directed us towards some lesser known contemporary russian director, and wanted us to discuss two movies made by him, both connected by the fact that they were shot on the same trip to India. This made for an interesting discussion also about photography and the use of symbols in movies. And we are happy to introduce a new member to our little discussion group, Julia!
This is the audio version of the episode. For video version go here: Olympia video versionApril 6th. 2026 is 130 years since the first Olympic Games. 40 years after the first games this sport event moved to Germany and became the most famous - or infamous - in the history of The Olympics. Not only was this to be a big propaganda event for the horrible oppressive ideology and regime that few years later would set the world on fire, but it was also captured on film by Leni Riefenstahl, an enigmatic figure that on one hand was a visionary artist but on the other hand helped promote the nazi regime. This made for quite an interesting discussion about sports and fascism, the banality of evil, art and politics and much more.
