Description
For over 25 years I have challenged the norms of horse care - blending science, data and compassion to create real welfare change. "Talk Horse To Me" is my journey as the founder of Forageplus, where we disrupt tradition, question marketing myths, and explore how evidenced-based horse care will build a better life for every horse. Join me because, when we talk horse we can do better for true whole horse welfare - Sarah Braithwaite

This episode explores the second domain of the Five Domains of Animal Welfare: Environment and why where a horse lives has a profound impact on how they feel, behave, and cope with the world.
In Episode One, we introduced the Five Domains framework and explained why nutrition forms the foundation of welfare.
In this episode, we move outward into the physical and social world the horse lives within, the air they breathe, the space they move through, the surfaces they stand on, the company they keep, and the choices they are allowed to make.
The environment domain is not just about turnout or housing. It shapes stress levels, freedom of expression, physical comfort, and ultimately the horse’s mental state.
Many modern horse environments prioritise human convenience over species-appropriate living, often without us realising the welfare cost. Using real-world examples, research insights, and practical experience, this episode examines how stables, small paddocks, isolation, and restricted choice influence behaviour, health, and emotional well-being - and why many so-called “behaviour problems” are actually environmental welfare signals.
This episode also draws important lessons from modern zoos, where species-appropriate environments transformed animal health and mental resilience, and asks why the horse world has been slower to make the same shift.
What this covers:
• What the Environment Domain includes
• How environment shapes physical comfort, behaviour, and mental state
• Why many traditional stables and small paddocks act as “indoor and outdoor cages”
• The hidden welfare costs of confinement, isolation, and restricted movement
• What modern zoos teach us about species-appropriate environments
• Why stress, anxiety, and “bad behaviour” are often environmental signals
• How movement, social contact, choice, and control reduce stress
• Practical ways to improve your horse’s environment — even on a livery yard
• How micro-environment factors like air quality, footing, noise, and light affect welfare
• Why small, thoughtful changes can create meaningful welfare gains
The core question: If a horse’s mental state is shaped by the space they live in, the company they keep, the air they breathe, and the choices they are allowed to make, are we supporting welfare, or simply managing stress? And if the environment directly shapes mental well-being, what responsibility do we have to question traditional horse keeping? This episode challenges us to see the horse’s world through their eyes, and shows why improving welfare doesn’t require perfection, just awareness, honesty, and small species-appropriate changes.

In this episode, Sarah Braithwaite, founder of Forageplus and advocate for equine welfare, launches a short podcast series exploring horse welfare through the Five Domains framework, showing how nutrition, environment, health, behavioural interactions and mental state combine to shape a horse's life.
In the first episode we focus on nutrition: why analysing forage matters, how traditional feeds can miss key needs, and how a forage-led approach supports better horse health, behaviour and wellbeing. Next time we’ll cover the environment and how living spaces influence comfort and safety.
