In this packed and wide-ranging episode of Brews & Battle Stories, hosts George Rice and Sean Downey sit down with veteran, contractor, and humanitarian Tim Lynch, whose decades-long path through military service and private security offers one of the most colorful narratives the show has featured.
Tim begins by recounting his unexpected entry into the Navy in 1979 – originally aiming to become a SEAL before a color vision issue redirected him into medical work. This twist set the stage for deployments that included supporting operations off the coast of Beirut following the 1983 Marine barracks bombing. After leaving the Navy, Tim earned a commission in the Marine Corps, serving in infantry roles, completing multiple WestPac deployments, and witnessing geopolitical flashpoints from Grenada to Panama and the Philippines.
The episode explores Tim’s transition from Marine officer to private contractor, including time in Baghdad and Kabul, starting his own security company, and eventually working as what he jokingly calls a “heavily armed humanitarian.” His work took him deep into Afghanistan’s remote provinces, where he lived among locals, learned Dari, conducted development projects, and gathered intelligence – sometimes while running an improvised moonshine-and-beer smuggling network that became legendary among contractors.
Throughout the conversation, the trio dives into modern military tech, drone innovation, procurement reforms, and evolving doctrines of precision warfare. They reflect on the impact of Iranian-made EFPs, shifting rules of engagement, and how today’s cost-effective drone systems are reshaping combat.
Amid the heavier moments, the episode is filled with humor: Afghan bar escapades, wild checkpoint misunderstandings, NATO camp shenanigans, rocket attack mishaps, and unforgettable personalities encountered throughout deployments.
Tim’s stories balance grit, absurdity, tragedy, and camaraderie – embodying exactly what Brews & Battle Stories aims to capture: the human side of war, told over a good drink.
Welcome to the debut episode of Brews & Battle Stories, hosted by lifelong friends Sean Downey and George Rice - two South Texas natives, veterans, and entrepreneurs whose lives have been intertwined since childhood. In this kickoff episode, Sean and George crack open a couple of cold ones and dive into the origins of their friendship, the wild early days of dreaming up a brewery, and the twists and turns that took them from Mission to McAllen, from civilian life to military service, and back again.
They revisit the beginnings of 5x5 Brewing Co., born out of a half-joking, half-inspired drunken brainstorm almost a decade ago. Sean shares the role he played in shaping the brewery’s branding from the ground up, while George recalls the chaos, creativity, and camaraderie that fueled the early years.
From there, the guys shift into what listeners can expect from the podcast: whiskey, beer, veteran storytelling, candid conversations with community leaders, plenty of humor, and the kind of unfiltered honesty that only comes from two people who have known each other since diapers. Whether it's Marine vs. Army banter, reflections on service from the 90s through the War on Terror era, or the ever-evolving military culture, Sean and George bring their signature mix of insight, irreverence, and authenticity.
Buckle up, grab a brew, and get ready—because if there’s one thing these two promise, it’s that they’ll have fun, they’ll speak freely, and they might just screw it up in spectacular fashion.
