Settle in, open your heart, and let's spend some time together in God's Word. TODAY'S DEVOTION: The law will turn you in on yourself if you're looking for it to save you. The law misapplied will cause you to keep your focus on you—either how well you are doing, or how miserably you are failing. The focus is the same. In the end, it's all you. Paul knew all about the law. He was an expert in the law. But what Paul discovered was the Gospel. And the Gospel turns our eyes off of ourselves, redirecting our focus on to Jesus—not what we have done or haven't done, but on Jesus, what He has done and what we have become in Him. Not I, but Christ, says Paul. Because that's what the Gospel does. It turns us outward to God, into the world as the new creatures that we are. Paul says, "I am crucified with Christ, and the life I now live, I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me." Paul has discovered that his real life is in Christ, not in obedience to the law. And this was his message. And he would not let anyone distort or change that message—not even Peter. So when Peter began to insist on Gentiles obeying the law of circumcision, he rebuked him publicly. Where are you looking? Inward, onto yourself? Are you looking to your own piety to get you in the good graces of God? Or are you looking outward, away from yourself and onto Jesus—the One who loves you and who is with you, the One who has made you and reclaimed you? Look to Him. Keep your eyes focused on Him, and don't let the law or anyone move your gaze anywhere else. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. He didn't feel like a mighty warrior. He felt like he was the least of the least. That's what he told the angel of the Lord: I come from the least of the tribes of Israel, and I am the least within my own family. That's not what God called him. God didn't call him the least of the least. He called him a mighty warrior. Regardless of how you feel, you are who God says you are. You might be beaten up, exhausted, and hiding like Gideon was, but like Gideon, God will come and find you. He comes looking for people just like that, so that he might prove himself strong through us. He delights in making the least the greatest. And he ultimately will win the victory for us, just as he did for the 300 trumpet-blowing Israelites. It was God who won that victory. It was God who was showing himself strong among the least. In the end, it is God who says who we are. If he chooses to call you mighty warrior, then that, my friend, is who you are. Have you heard him call you daughter, son, friend? Well, that's who you are. You are who God says you are. So listen and receive the blessing of the name that he has given you. There's going to be a time coming when we stand before God— in Revelation, we're told that there's a gift for those who overcome: it is a white stone, and on it will be written a name that no one understands but the one who receives it. You are who God says you are. So live in the light of that. Receive the blessing of it and rise up into what he's calling you to do. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Love delivers us from a meaningless life. In our reading in Psalm 39 today, we hear these words: "We are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing ends in nothing. We heap up wealth, not knowing who will spend it. And so, Lord, where do I put my hope?" 16:27 These sobering words echo Shakespeare's lines: "Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow creeps in this petty pace from day to day… Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." 17:09 Whether it is the pursuit of the arts, power, prestige, pleasures, or making a name for yourself, all of it in and of itself is laden with nihilism 17:54; it all renders down to nothing apart from this—apart from love 17:59. Paul tells us here very clearly that love is what animates our days with meaning 18:11. Love imbues every gesture in life with the eternal 18:20. And love's kind was revealed to us in the flesh—in the life of Jesus 18:27. So we look to him, friends. We look to him as the model of our life in love 18:38. It is a self-giving life, a radically forgiving life, a co-suffering life—a life that is patient and kind [18:51](/timestamps/1131]. Not jealous, not boastful, not proud, nor rude [18:54](/timestamps/1134]. It doesn't demand its own way. It's not irritable and it keeps no record of wrongs [19:03](/timestamps/1143]. It doesn't rejoice about injustice, but rejoices when the truth wins out. It never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through everything [19:07](/timestamps/1147]. So by his grace, dear friends, let us be reminded today that love can deliver us from a meaningless life and that God Himself has gifted us with his love [19:22](/timestamps/1162]. That's the prayer I have for my own soul. That's the prayer I have for my family, for my wife, for my daughters, for my son. And that's the prayer I have for you [19:44](/timestamps/1184]. Let's open our hearts and step into the day together—because as Hunter says, you are loved. TODAY'S DEVOTION: You have a part to play. You have your own note to add to God's great symphony. You get to add your unique sound to the magnificent masterpiece that God is composing in and through his people. The very word "personality" comes from the Latin word "persona," literally meaning your sound. God has created you to offer your sound, your life, your presence, to his great song. Ephesians 2:10 tells us that we are God's masterpiece. That word in the Greek is poema; it means poem. God has expertly crafted you to be exactly who you are, right where you are. To learn to play our part in the music of God's kingdom, we must begin by accepting our own humanity—because God has. He has accepted your humanity; he has even embraced all of humanity. He became one of us. He knows every secret, every weakness. As the prophet says, he remembers that we are but dust. And yet, in Christ, you have become a partaker of the divine nature—God's very life now dwells in you. You are deeply valued and cherished by God. Part of our Christian journey is learning to discover what it means to partake in the life of God. This does not make us God, but it does mean we've been welcomed into his family, his purposes, his symphony. So as we learn to play our part, we must remember both our humanity and our participation in God's divine life. When that is lived out, it looks like giving of oneself—being radically forgiving, learning to suffer alongside those who are in pain, offering self-giving, radically forgiving, co-suffering love. This is what it looks like to live as the masterpiece you truly are. That is a prayer I have for my own soul. That is a prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that is a prayer I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: We hear the cry of the flesh: "I will do it." That was Israel's confident response to Joshua—"We will serve the Lord"—but Joshua challenged them, saying, "No, you will not." Israel insisted, "We will do it." And how often do we echo that same refrain? Our hearts, like Peter's, boldly declare things like "I will never disown you," only to discover the weakness of our resolve when the moment of testing comes. Before the rooster crowed, Peter had denied the Lord three times. That is the story of the flesh—full of promises, full of self-assurance, but destined to betray both ourselves and God. What we need is not another promise from ourselves, but Someone who can do what we could never do, Someone who has done it. That Someone is Jesus. He is the One who was faithful when we were not. He undid what Adam—and all the sons and daughters of Adam—have continued to do. He kept the covenant. He served his Father in absolute obedience, all the way to the end. He did it. And after he had done it, he declared, "It is finished. It is done." So, as God's people, we need not rely on our own flesh. We need not say, "We will do it." Instead, let us proclaim, "It is done. He has done it." Let us live in the reality of Christ's victory—not our own striving, but his finished work. Because he did it, we can remain in the land. We can remain in him, in his promise and in life. Live in the One who has accomplished what we could never accomplish. That's the prayer for my soul; that's the prayer for my family—my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: We all experience temptation. In the wilderness, Israel struggled—many didn't believe, and it kept them from entering all that God had given them. They were meant to be God's special possession, delivered from slavery into freedom, given their own land. Yet, unbelief kept them from realizing who they truly were and how they were meant to live. But for us, it's different. Paul reminds us that our struggle with temptation isn't the normal or final story for those in Christ. The "normal" Christian life isn't one of simply wandering and failing, of our bones littered about the desert. Christ has come, and overwhelming victory has been won on the cross. Where Adam failed, Christ succeeded. As Paul writes, "For since death came through a human being, the resurrection of the dead has also come through a human being. For as all die in Adam, so all will be made alive in Christ Jesus." The victory of Christ on the cross has changed our very being. We are no longer slaves. We are God's own children. And this deliverance isn't just for a small tribe or nation—it's for all of humanity. In Christ, you have been drawn into God's very life. This is the truth of your being. And it is all a gift. Will you face challenges and temptations? Yes. But none of that can undo what God has done for you. The life of the Spirit in you now enables you to endure. As Peter declared, God has enabled you to share in his divine nature and escape the corruption of the world. Christ has made you a partaker in his divine life—his presence dwells in you. Still, only God can reveal God. So my prayer today is that God will reveal his truth to you—that you will see and believe that what Christ did on the cross has changed everything. You are his. You are forgiven, loved, and made new. You have freedom, and you have a new land—a new way of living that flows with his life. As the revelation of Christ breaks in, you'll find a new power to live—the way of faith, hope, and love: a self-giving life, a radically forgiving life, a co-suffering, cruciform life of Christ in you. That's my prayer for my own soul, for my family, and for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: The lesson of the ox. Sometimes in the Bible, we encounter strange, obscure laws like "Don't muzzle an ox while it's threshing grain," taken from Deuteronomy 25. At first, these sayings may seem puzzling or out of place for our everyday lives. But layered within them are implications that reach deep into the heart of God's wisdom. God is not only speaking to farmers about showing care to their animals—He's also painting a picture for us, showing how we should treat those who serve and work on our behalf, even those who work for the benefit of our souls. When we read through the Old Testament, so much of it can feel unrelated to our experience. How does muzzling an ox have anything to do with me, you might ask? Yet when we read these things, we shouldn't dismiss them or move quickly past them. Yes, the words are spoken to farmers, and yes, Joshua is speaking to the tribes of Israel—but God is speaking to us, too. It was written not just for them, but for us. God calls us to a deeper reading, sometimes an allegorical or analogous reading. Many church fathers felt that a spiritual engagement with Scripture—a creative, allegorical interpretation—was a higher form of connecting with the text. Maybe God would have you chart out what He's put in front of you. Maybe He'd have you sit and write out the boundaries of His blessings and gifts for you. Maybe, as was true for the Israelites, you'll find that there is unoccupied land and unrealized gifts in your life. God may be calling you to chart them, to seize them, to claim the inheritance that He has set before you. The lesson in the ox, and in all the pages we read, is that the Bible is for us. It's not just about ancient animals or ancient reports—it's about what God has done for us. This book is a revelation of Him, about the God who gave us His very life and about learning to seize and live in the reality of it. So maybe we can all chart out what God has already done for us—write it down, recognize it—and then go out and occupy it. Seize it. Live in the reality of who you are in Christ. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. They knew who they were—not outsiders or afterthoughts, but beloved children with a rightful share in God's promises. This is the gospel that meets us today, right where we are. Not because we have checked every box, or lived up to every standard, but because our identity is rooted in being His children. The inheritance is yours. The welcome is yours. The abundance of God's presence and provision is yours. Let this truth settle deep within: You are loved. You are included. The story of the Gibeonites reminds us that sometimes faith can look a whole lot like shrewdness. Much like Rahab, the Gibeonites saw what God was doing among his people. They recognized that the Lord, the God of Israel, was the God of deliverance. They didn't trust in their own power, alliances, or might. Instead, they sought to make peace with God—even using cunning and deception—because they feared him and believed his promises. Their shrewdness, though rooted in deceit, was ultimately an act of faith. It was their confidence in God's purposes that moved them to take action. The Gibeonites understood that deliverance did not come from holding tightly to their own ways or insisting on their own terms, but rather by aligning themselves with what God was doing. Even when their wisdom didn't look entirely "respectable," it led to their rescue and inclusion in the story of God's people. Jesus himself spoke of the value of shrewdness in the parable of the shrewd manager—commending the ability to let go, to give away, to not hold onto our own rights but instead to seek life and deliverance, even in unexpected ways. True faith often requires a willingness to let go and give up what we might otherwise cling to. Paul carries this same theme into his words for the Corinthians: Why not just accept the injustice and let yourself be cheated, rather than insist on your own way? Sometimes, faith means releasing our grip, letting go of our insistence, and making peace—in our relationships with God and with others. This is the way of faith—a faith that is wise, cunning, and obedient. It is a faith that doesn't always fit our expectations, but it always invests itself in relationship—relationship with God, with his people, and with the world. May we learn from the Gibeonites and from the words of Paul a shrewdness that leads us not to destruction, but to grace, deliverance, and life. That is the prayer I have for my own soul. That is the prayer I have for my family—for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that is the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. That's the old principle—the way of the law we just heard in Deuteronomy. If you do this, you'll receive that. If you keep these terms, the blessing is yours. But if you fail, the curse follows. It's a heavy reality—one that's sobering, even terrifying—because who among us can really live up to it? We're faced with a standard of holiness and faithfulness that's utterly beyond our reach. But, as we turn to Galatians, we're introduced to something entirely new. The old contract gives way to a new promise, a new principle. Not "this for that"—rather, it's what God has already done for us. On the cross, Jesus fulfills the impossible terms of the old agreement so that we can know its blessing. He takes on the whole weight—the demand for holiness, the full consequence of missing the mark—and he fulfills it. The cross is the final word. In Jesus, God doesn't just let prophets and scribes tell the story of who he is—he comes in person. We see what God is truly like. And Christ's sacrificial, self-giving, co-suffering love becomes the revelation of God's heart. It's not about keeping score. It's not about earning our way by "this for that." It's pure gift—love poured out for people who have nothing to give but their need and their trust. So, as you hear the strong warnings and conditional blessings and curses of Deuteronomy, let your heart look up and see the face of Jesus—the one who has achieved all the blessings for you, who has defeated death and sin, and who invites you to live as a new creation. Not by fear, not by your own exhausting efforts, but by the cruciform love of God. Let's breathe deep and live in the reality of grace. Let this new way shape us—with gratitude, love, and a transforming vision of who God is. God is like Jesus. The final word has come, and it is love. That's a prayer I have for my own soul. That's a prayer I have for my family, for my wife and daughters and son. And that's a prayer I have for you. May it be so. And yes, Paul lists those behaviors, those outward acts that are clearly not of God. But let's not miss something subtle yet significant: sometimes, our sinful nature shows up not in lawlessness—but in how we try to justify ourselves through religious law-keeping. The church in Galatia was tempted to trust their own obedience as the measure of their righteousness before God, to rely on their ability to check every religious box. But Paul's message is unequivocal: keeping the law cannot make us righteous, because none of us can fulfill it perfectly. We all fall short. Even the most devout and well-intentioned efforts cannot bridge the gap that separates us from God's holiness. Instead of pointing us to ourselves and our striving, Paul points us to Jesus. He reminds us that our righteousness is found in Christ and in Christ alone. By the Spirit, we are drawn into the very life of Jesus—the truly Righteous One. In his life, death, and resurrection, Christ has done for us what we cannot do for ourselves. As we yield to his Spirit, we begin to walk in newness of life, not striving by our own strength, but participating in the goodness of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—the fruit of the Spirit. We lay down both our rebelliousness AND our pious attempts to justify ourselves. Instead, we fix our eyes on what God has done in Christ: how we are included, embraced, and equipped to walk in his ways, not by might, but by the Spirit. The Christian life is not a ladder of perfection we climb, but a life we receive by grace, step by step, trusting the Spirit to bring forth God's purposes in us. Let us hold to this freedom and refuse every yoke of self-made righteousness. Let's stop striving to earn what Christ has already given. May our lives be expressions of faith working through love, freed from the trap of performance, anchored instead in the love of God that claims us—full stop. This is the prayer for my soul. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Set Free Many of us have not been free, and many of us have been sentimental legalists. You know, we flatter ourselves and think that we are better and more righteous than we really are. And that's why Paul says in verse 21, "Tell me, you who want to live under the law, do you know what the law actually says?" And the answer to that question would be no. The demands of the Law are impossible. It is downright hard to read sometimes. Breaking the Law warrants death. And if you want to get sobered up to the demands of the Law and the judgment due us because of it, you do not have to go much further than our reading in Deuteronomy today. So, let us do our best to ditch that sentimental, self-righteous fantasy that we are somehow able to pull this thing off, because we're not. Holiness is so far out of reach of my flesh that I'd sooner turn into a unicorn than a saint if it were up to my effort to be holy. But thanks be to God, the right standing that I couldn't achieve has been achieved and purchased for me. By the one and only man, Christ Jesus himself. He did achieve this spotless life. His sacrifice of death for people like you and me has not only set us free from the penalty of sin, but he has given us his Spirit so that we can live this life now in him. He has made us his children. We've been adopted. This whole glorious transaction creates a new desire within us and a new cry within us that says, "Abba, Father! Father, you, not I." There is new life and there is real freedom. But don't be fooled into sentimental, legalistic, powerless living. Instead, embrace your sonship. Wake up to the power that now resides in you, the Holy Spirit. Rejoice daily that you are forgiven, that you've been made holy. There's nothing that you've done to achieve that. Allow your eyes to be drawn to the glorious grace that has been given to you in Christ. There's only one glorious man who lived the righteous life, and he lived it for all of us in order that we all might be found in him. The Christian life is impossible apart from Christ, but in Christ, all things are possible. So let's live free today. Let's live in him today, because that is where we are. And the prayer of my own heart is that I will see it. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Is there anything in all Scripture as disturbing as what we've read today in the book of Deuteronomy? I'm not sure there is. In these passages, we see the curse of sin and the depths of darkness that our world has plunged into by our rebellion against God. Yet in Galatians, we see that in that darkness, God has come to us. There is a picture, a shadow of the promise, and that shadow is of a tree—a tree of cursing, a tree where the guilty are executed, a tree where Christ hangs vicariously for the whole human race. There he absorbs the sins of the world in order to free us from the dominion of sin. He breaks its power. He sets captives free. The brokenness we see in Deuteronomy—the war, the idolatry, the slaughter, the slavery—this in no way reflects the heart of God. This is a reflection of the heart of man. God concedes to the reality of the darkness of the human heart. God was in fact conspiring to bring an end to this evil by offering Christ as the atoning sacrifice for the sins of the world, for my sin, for the darkness in my own heart. Christ was hung on Calvary's tree so that I might never be. And Paul's admonition to those who trust in Christ is to keep trusting and never foolishly believe that somehow we can justify ourselves by going back to an old system that was only about concession and the hardness of our heart. It was never about making that heart new. It never had the power to make the world new, let alone my own heart. Paul reminds us that there was never forgiveness in the old path. There was never new life in that old tragic system. There was never the promise of peace on earth. Paul wants us to hold tightly to the cross of the gospel. It is offered to us not on the basis of the law, but on the basis of God's grace and his love, as seen clearly on the cross and seen clearly in the face of Jesus himself. In him, friends, we see the heart, the love, the grace, the mercy offered to the whole world and sinners like you and me. In Jesus, we see God reconciling the world to himself so that we might be set free, the whole world to himself. May we never be foolish enough to think that somehow it can be done in any other way, that somehow in our heart there is a way to be made right with God. The way of new life is not found in our heart. It's found in his, and that is a gift, and it's given to all. This is the truth of your being. You have a new heart. Now let us live in the way of our new being, with faith, hope, and love. That is the prayer that I have for my wife, for my daughters and my son. And that is the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.   And now Lord,  make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.  Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope.  Where there is darkness, light.  And where there is sadness,  Joy.  Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.  For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life.  Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. The law instructs us. It teaches us our need for God's grace. That is its purpose. It was never meant to save us. Peter would lose sight of this. He was swayed by James' friends. They were people who trafficked in fear and legalism, control. Peter was generous-hearted toward these new Gentile believers in Antioch. He was eating with them. Sharing his life with them until this group shows up. They tapped into the fear-based brain that tries to pacify God with piety and performance by pretending. They conjured up a storm of fear that grabbed a hold of Peter's heart and spread out into Barnabas's heart. Thankfully, Paul is relentless with the gospel, and he verbally slapped some grace into Peter. Even though this was no doubt an embarrassing rebuke for Peter, I'm sure in the end he was glad for it. Living in fear is no way to live. Fear is infectious. It's like a virus. It spreads. And in this case, it spread even to Barnabas, who is known as the son of encouragement. But God's grace is infectious too, and this is an infection we don't want to cure. We need to recognize our need to be renewed in the message of the gospel all the time. If Peter and Barnabas needed to be renewed in the message of God's grace, how much more do you and I need to be renewed in it? That old religion of fear shows up all the time in our lives, so we need to be ready with the gospel, ready to remind ourselves that the gospel is not about fear, condemnation, performance. It's not about any of that. Galatians 2:20 tells us what the gospel is: My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me. See, there's grace, and there is the gospel. The Son of God loves us and gives himself for us, and not just us, but for the whole world. Christ undid what Adam had done. He assumed humanity on his shoulders on the cross, and there we find ourselves in him. Because of the vicarious life of Christ, Paul says we are in him on the cross. He says it plainly here: I have been crucified with Christ. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all shall be made alive. Paul holds to this gospel truth. In Christ, Paul sees the completed work of God on behalf of all. And that, my friend, is such good news. It is the antidote to fear-based religion. It is the pathway to freedom, generosity, and love. So let's live in that truth today. What Christ has done for you, what he's done for Gentiles and Jews, what he's done for the world. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul today, that I will see the immense magnitude of the love of God for all, that I'll rest in that, and that I will know its joy. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son, and that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. Paul was a slave, and he didn't even know it. And God came and set Paul free—not by offering a doctrinal formula for him to learn, or by giving him some new insight into scripture even after all his deep studying. No, Paul says, "I received my message from no human source. No one taught me. Instead, I received it by direct revelation from Jesus Christ." It was God revealing God to Paul. And, friend, that's how it is for all of us. Maybe you did hear a message, maybe you read a book or found yourself opening up to the gospel over time. Those things do happen. But underneath it all, whenever there is true awakening, it is God himself revealing himself—opening eyes, removing the scales, freeing us to see who he is and who we are in him. Chains break, and lies fall away. We begin to see that we were blind—not because of lack of effort or knowledge, but because only Christ can truly open our eyes. Paul's story reminds us: before his encounter with Christ, his vision of God was shaped by lies and misconceptions. He believed in a God obsessed with theological purity, one who would even commission people to kill in His name. But that vision wasn't true; God is not like that. The real God, revealed in Jesus, is the God who values and loves people. He is full of grace and truth and so much grander than our categories or our obsessions with being right. Like Paul, it is only when Jesus reveals himself to us—breaking through our blindness—that we can come to know the God of love and grace who lays down his life for us. This revelation sets us free to live a new kind of life—a life where the chains of deception and shame fall away, and we begin to walk in the light and love of God. The journey of faith is about seeing more of who Jesus really is, and as we do, we are made new. That is my prayer: that my eyes would be opened more and more to the glorious love of our Lord Jesus. That's the prayer I have for myself, for my family, and for you. May your eyes see the true God revealed in Christ, and may that vision change everything. May it be so.
