A series of unmissable podcasts reflecting the music, musicians and musical communities of Wandsworth over the last 50 years. We’re Featuring some standout musical highlights from Wandsworth's year as London borough of Culture: a world of East Asian sounds from the Celadon Club at Wandsworth Arts Fringe Festival, some classic cuts from Wandsworth Music at the Royal Albert Hall with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, working on a programme devised by students with disabilities. Presenter: Max Reinhardt A story of Folk music in the borough over the last five decades, told by one of the UK’s most outstanding performers and songwriters, Lisa Knapp. Lisa was born and brought up in Balham and Tooting, where she learned to play and where her love of folk music evolved. Along the way, there’s a few words and a little music from the late and legendary Bert Jansch who lived in Putney in the ’70’s, song extracts from Anne Briggs, Shirley Collins, A.L. Presenter : Rita Ray Rita visits a number of Creative Health and Wellbeing projects in the borough, a key focus of Wandsworth’s London Borough of Culture year. Sensory theatremaker, Arti Prahsar, talks about her work and the way music is part of her practice, with excerpts from her contribution to the Culture Box archive, a sensory resource for use at home, produced by the London Health and Arts research project. Interviews, music and poetry from staff and members of unique music and art centre, Sound Minds, who work with people with lived experience of mental health problems.  South Korean virtuoso musician Hyelim Kim tells us the origin story of the traditional Daegeum flute, her research highlighting its role as an instrument bringing healing and peace, followed by an excerpt of her playing. Hear from internationally celebrated young people’s theatre company, Oily Cart, Tooting based pioneers of Sensory Theatre, with contributions from Artistic Director Ellie Griffiths talking about their interactive sensory productions and how music is a totally essential element to enhance and communicate the experience for neurodivergent audiences. Featuring performances from neurodiverse creator/musicians Kyllah Dyer on cello  (The World Beneath Us 2024), Lucy Bowen on guitar (InsideWays (2025)) and by Maya Youssef on qanun & cast (The Bounce 2014). Choir Leader, Cecelia Wickham Anderson and members of the Community Gospel Choir at Saint Michael’s Wandsworth Common talk about the transformative experiences that the choir and the music have given them and the community and share a live performance. Presenter: Max Reinhardt Cymande are a British band from Balham, originally active in the early 1970s. With a membership deriving from several Caribbean nations, Cymande were noted for their unique eclectic mix of music they called "nyah-rock" (Funk, soul, reggae, rock, African , Guyanan, and Jazz). The two founder members lived in the same street in Balham, Byrne Road, discovered a mutual love of music and created a band that has adoring intergenerational fans. They formed in 1971 ,released three albums before disbanding in 1974, completing USA stadium tours with soul and funk stars like the reverend Al Green. After gaining newfound popularity when their music was sampled by premiere league rap artists, including the Fugees, De La Soul and MC Solaar, they reformed in the 2010’s and have toured worldwide ever since. Their most recent album Renascence was released in January 2025. The band’s remarkable story is told by founder members Steve Scipio and Patrick Patterson. Presenters: Rita Ray & Anabel Provansal Two schools in Wandsworth are responsible for nurturing a remarkable number of musicians and bands, Spencer Park in Battersea and Elliot School in Roehampton, now Ark Academy Putney. Spencer Park ex-pupils Dennis Bovell and Julian Joseph share tales of the inspiring musical culture of the school; along with Noel McKoy, celebrated soul singer (1961-2022); and Chris Johnson, Head of Music in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s. The story of Elliot School’s phenomenal list of students who went on to be well known musicians in the world of pop and rock is told by two of them, drummer Ed Spevcock (1960/70’s ) & Emma Smith (1990 into the noughties). A look at the history of Irish music in the borough over that time with long time Irish resident Jean Rathbone. Featuring contributions from celebrated Irish record producer and instrumentalist Gerry Diver who played in the borough in the 90’s into noughties plus and Lisa Knapp, a folk artist who has also been very active in Irish Music, locally and further afield. There’s also a visit to the Ramble Inn in Tooting. Presenter: Anabel Provansal An exploration of the Polish and Ukrainian communities and their music in Wandsworth and how life and music has been developing, especially in recent decades. Featuring an interview with Ksenia Kazintseva, an artist based in the borough who supports and writes about Eastern European Artists and gives an overview of the music from Eastern European countries and where it can be heard in Wandsworth, a nearby visit to a warm up and rehearsal session of the Orleta Polish Folk Song & Dance Group in Balham. Plus the exquisite singing of Inna Husieva, an opera singer from Ukraine, now settled in Wandsworth.
