Purpose isn’t always born in comfort. Sometimes it’s shaped in the margins. In today’s episode, I share my own story: growing up in a low‑income, culturally diverse neighborhood in Toronto, navigating the culture shock of leaving it, and how those early experiences — along with the grounding force of faith — shaped my understanding of people, empathy, belonging, and ultimately my leadership style.
We explore five key themes:
Poverty as a teacherCulture shock as a catalystReinvention through disruptionFaith as an anchor for purpose Leadership style as a function of one’s upbringing
If you’ve ever felt like your beginnings were too humble, too chaotic, or too complicated to produce greatness, this episode is for you.Like today's episode? Parenting is a journey of constant evolution. Today’s episode is for parents and adult children navigating one of the most meaningful transitions in life: moving from a protector child relationship into a friendship built on empathy, listening, and mutual respect.
In this episode, we explore three key ideas that shape this transition:
• How attachment theory influences the way we let go — and why secure bonds make separation both beautiful and difficult.
• How parenting must recalibrate at every milestone — from elementary to junior high, junior high to senior high, and senior high to college or university.
• How parents shift from authority to partnership — learning when to lead, when to listen, and when to let friendship emerge naturally.
If you’re a parent learning to let go, or an adult child hoping your parent will see you differently, this episode is for you.

Every parent dreams of the day their child steps confidently into the world — and yet that same day can quietly horrify them. It’s every hope and aspiration wrapped in a single goodbye. It’s the mission you feel you were put on Earth to do… and the moment you wonder if you actually did it right.
In this episode of The Coach’s Corner, I share the journey of sending my only daughter, Makayla, off to university — a moment that brought back memories of our car rides together, listening to the Jackson 5’s “Never Can Say Goodbye.” It was our ritual. Our soundtrack. Our reminder that even when life moves forward, love doesn’t let go.
And woven through this story is our faith as parents — because we almost lost her before she was born. We held onto God, believing He would bring her here, believing she had purpose, believing she would make a difference in the world. Her name, Makayla, means “Who is like Yahweh.”
Now she’s here — or rather, not here with us anymore — as she steps into her own life at university. The same faith that carried her into this world is the faith we lean on as she walks into the world of her future.
This episode is about how parents — not only as leaders of their children, but as the ones who must eventually send them into the world — learn to say not goodbye, but see you later.

In a world where companies chase efficiency, automation, and profit at all costs, it’s easy to forget the human side of leadership.
This episode of The Coach’s Corner features a powerful conversation with Vincent Forese, a pioneering leader in education technology who has consistently put people, principles, and performance in proper order—even when it costs him.
If you’re a leader, manager, founder, or executive wrestling with tough choices, team loyalty, organizational culture, or the tension between doing what’s profitable and doing what’s right, this episode will give you a real world look at principled leadership under pressure.About Vincent FloreseVincent Forese is one of the original education technology executives, pioneering the use of the internet for education in the mid-1990s, when the Internet was still in its infancy. An accounting degree, and a career in business development had enable him to grow and sell several businesses over his career. He is most proud of the fact that many of his largest customers over the years consider him a partner and a friend. A listener asked a powerful question:
“How do you measure your relationships in corporate America — in the context of what does it get you?”
It’s a question about influence. It’s a question about access. It’s a question about trust. It’s a question about career mobility.
And it’s a question most people never think to ask.
Today on The Coach’s Corner, we’re introducing a simple, powerful framework that answers that question directly:
Respect → Like → Trust → Love
A relationship ladder that shows you:how relationships formhow they deepenhow they breakhow they healand what each rung gets you
This is The Relationship Ladder — and once you see it, you’ll never unsee it. Let’s go and climb it.
